They are OK, although you have to really compare as items at Home Depot we're not too far off from here. Specialty items are available here, or I do not see elsewhere such as grains and cereals are available here. I go here for my solar decorative lighting because it is cheap. You gotta love a place that sells "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Global Warming" for $3.99 or a universal remote the size of a toy poodle I will give to my elderly mom for $5.99. I actually came here because I was told they have a good selection of Bob's Red Mill grains at better than retail, which they do, but I ended up filling the trunk of my car with folding chairs, Wii accessories, artisanal pasta shapes and a variety of stocking stuffers. Like other outlet stores, they slip some non-distressed goods into the mix and you are supposed to be so excited that you think a crockpot or tube of toothpaste at full retail is a bargain. Fortunately, none of the prices are out of line. And there is very little true, made-for-outlet-store junk here. Shop 'n save, folks. If you can invent a need for it, you really can't go wrong here. Value of Bob's durum wheat flour (aka semolina flour) which was the purpose of my visit: $3.99. Value of total purchase including a $5 donation to the local food bank, matched by OSJL: $140. I was in there the other day about a half hour before close and one of the sweet young ladies at the register asked to use the bathroom. There I believe manger told them no rudely because, "they had an half hour left". I could feel the young lady embarrassment and fear. How awful this place treats there workers! read more

I love Ocean State. I consistently find the best stuff here for the cheapest prices. My favorite discontinued hair product was $1.50 (from $8~$10). I recently purchased a wet suit top [for kayaking] for $10. I'm also very impressed with their food selection. There's a surprisingly wide variety of vegan choices (cookies, boxed meals, cake mixes, etc.) Of course, the caveat here is to check the expiration date, but I've never come across anything that was past its' date. read more

Best if you look at their circular and you're going in for specific items that you think are bargain priced. You have to be very selective. One thing I find hilarious is that the conveyer belts in the check-out line do not work, and haven't worked for as long as I can remember. You have to manually slide your stuff down to the cashier. Can't understand why they never fixed these. One important tip: Do not buy toys here. Ever. They will disintegrate in 24 hours. read more

I'm not usually a huge fan of closeout type discount stores, mainly because they reel you in with promises of cheap stuff and typically end up proffering lots of junk. Like any of those, this place certainly has it's share of junk. I'd suggest skipping the clothing and housewares sections. Head straight for the kitchenwares and food sections. I found a selection of Yogi teas for $2.50, when they normally are more like 4 or 5 dollars. I found large bottles of E.V.O.O. for around $5, some organic coffee sodas at $1 a four-pack and a large selection of Bob's Red Mill products at a much lower price than the grocery stores. There's also lots of rice, pasta, sauces, spices, flavorings and other dry goods at a decent price. I happened to be driving home from Kinderhook back to Albany when I passed this place and stopped in. It's definitely not worth a special trip, but if you happen to be nearby, you should stop in. read more

This is a nice local store with a good variety of items. Went in today and purchased nice heavyweight Made in USA socks. Also purchased a bath mat made in USA. It's refreshing to see a selection of USA made items. Also found a Ralph Lauren shower curtain for $10.00. This would sell at Macys for well over $40.00. This was made in India. Stock changes frequently. Also have a great selection of organic food, and food from various countries. I like the fact you can find USA made in Valatie, Columbia County, NY. read more

This was my first visit to this store since I moved up here from Long Island. This one is pretty large in comparison. We were looking for something pretty specific...a 6X8 or 6X9 area rug with a geometric pattern in black or gray. We were ready to give up when a customer in a nearby carpet store tipped us off to this place, and that they have a pretty healthy inventory of area rugs. Well, they did, and had a rug that pretty much fit the bill, for only $40.00. Then on top of that, we got another 20% civil service discount! Say what you want about this business. If you have the time to haunt the place you might find a good bargain. Otherwise you need to decide if the prices are good enough to stand in line for 10-15 minutes regardless of the crowd as the check out people and/or their check out equipment work at a frustratingly slow pace. On the upside, they usually undercharge when they make mistakes! read more

Oh gosh. This was my first time stepping into an Ocean State Job Lot location, and, by the looks of things in here, this will have been my last! They may have had a ton of items to select from, but everything from no employees to serve the customers to ripped-up floors, to broken handicapped/motorized chairs that look like they spent their time serving the military of World War 2, to a lot of other things, this will have been my last time. My mom, there for a while used to take pride in visiting Ocean State Job Lots, but with this visit, she changed here viewpoint too, and is no longer making the visit to Ocean State Job Lots, it's that grotesque. read more

This place is awesome! I love how they rent out (or buy) old stores instead of new ones. They used the Old Grand union for this one. I noticed that they also re-use everything they can from the old store, like shopping carts, baskets, some of the old shelves, and the old registers. Instead of wasting money making their own shopping bags, they buy other stores'! Such a great way to recycle! If I had a business like this, that is exactly how I would run it. So here's a review from a previous employee ... I met some of the best people working here . It's not a job to get if ur looking to pay ur bills , they start u out at minum wage and there's raises are a joke ... This past summer the air conditioner broke and us employees had to work in sweatshop conditions many of us would go upstairs WHERE there was ac and just chill for 20 mins ... The dress code was crazy only carries that went midcalf even boys could not wear there version of capris... Even customers would complain about they heat , I guess corporate didn't give a crap ...they will never give you more then 29 hours a week which is crazy partime in New York is 35 hours ... There very stingie about there cash tills , if ur missing 4 dollars or more u get called in the office , where they make u get on webcam conference with another manager from another store for proof ... That's insane , to get a promotion is like pulling teeth , and me having a 5 dollar difference from months Prior I wasn't even a thought to be considered , even though I worked customer service for a year and I had experince ... And they only let you have water on the sales floor many people don't run on water just saying ..... And if u get sucked into it they will have you work f3 which is from 6 am til 1pm and again no extra pay for this .... This is a job temp job but considering all the bad reviews I read when I got hired I shoulda listened ... No disrespect but I'm stating the truth read more
