My son's tattoo artist was Javier and his piece is truly amazing. I, on a whim, got a small fine line tattoo, while waiting for my son, done by Vanessa. I visited the shop as a walk in and left regretting it. A few years back I had a piece done on my ditch that came out beautifully and with such good line work and shading. It took about 45 minutes and I paid 145$ for it and I was over the moon about it especially with it being a cover up. So I decided to come back to the same shop for another cover up because I was so satisfied with the first one. This time around was truly something else. First off, I wasn't able to do a full cover up because the scar I have needs to heal but I got the base done which was only a few dark lines around my arm ( 4 to be exact) I was expecting it to be somewhat expensive maybe 200$ total at most but 500$ for some lines around my arm is actually ABSURD and I feel robbed of my money. They charge 200$ per hour and the artist I had I feel as though dragged out the time just to make me pay for two hours when this tattoo should've easily taken an hour or less. Not to mention the time she spent chit chatting with other customers that somehow still counted as my time? She went over the lines SO many times that I bled more than any other tattoo I've ever had and I'm still currently in pain from it and it's been almost a week since I had it done. The best part of the whole experience? The lines I got done are uneven... what a waste of time and money. What happened to the old management and the good artists that used to be there. Will not be returning and I don't recommend this shop to anyone unless you want to be robbed and leave disappointed. read more

When I arrived I met my artist Marco, who went over final details and made some suggestions based on what my end goal was for my tattoo. Marco was awesome and it was obvious very passionate about his art and giving every customer the same time and attention. I enjoyed our conversation during the tattoo and feel like I made a friend. I love this place. I got my first tattoo there and my two most recent ones. I'm so happy with the quality of them. They look incredible and I've had people stop me because of how amazing the one on my arm looks. My artist was/ is Amado and he is amazing. He is incredibly talented and super nice. He did my shark and only had the outside line and center line and did the rest from a photo. The koi fish on my calf isn't finished yet and I am so excited to back and get it finished. I am a real deep thinker when it comes to my tattoos, having said that, I highly recommend this place to get that really meaningful piece of art. I have been following a lot of different shops on Instagram, but I would just keep seeing these stunning pieces coming out of Ocho Placas. I would work and see such variety of different pieces, sure enough Ocho Placas. Javier, the owner, does some really incredible black work. Pooka, is the Miami flower girl for sure, she does the most true to form nature tatts. The artist I ultimately chose was Jerry Blades, he does the sickest Japanese style tatts. They also have a walk in studio, where you can get your piece designed and put on same day, which is cool. In my case though, It took me only like 13 years to commit, and when you are getting a significant piece, you want to get the best quality that you can. I was back and forth with Jerry and I am so proud and blessed to have chosen Ocho Placas for my tattoo. The piece took a few sessions to complete and it came out spectacular. The professionalism of the shop is on point. They are not cheap, but they are certainly worth the price of admission. You are certainly investing in a quality piece of art, and one that you will be carrying with you your whole life. I absolutely recommend this shop. read more

This place is the best! Honestly I was a little nervous going in because the only other tattoo I have didn't come out as planed so coming into a new shop and working with new artists scared me a bit (was hoping not to make a repeat) but instantly i knew I made a right decision. After walking into the coffee shop and being stared down by a scary looking barista. I was greeted with a friendly hello by Justin, after talking to him about a consultation I had set up he went back and talked to the artist. I was pleasantly surprised that Amado took his time to look over the area I wanted and then talked me through some ideas and made my idea even better! He even had a sketch drawn up for me to look at. I was incredibly impressed with all the hard work he put into it. He also gave me a ball park range of pricing with was super helpful. After booking my appointment and waiting for the day, not only was my tattoo fast but Amado was a super funny and fun loving guy who you can tell loves what he does. I was shopping around for an artist around this same time last year to start my sleeve up when my girlfriend tagged me in a post. Her Instagram name read "Pooka" and I was instantly intrigued. We exchanged a few emails and made an appointment to meet. The day comes and upon meeting her aura just flooded the air. I can't even properly explain how happy this made me. Just makes you feel good and confident about what you're about to do. I mean, cmon' tattoos are for life and if you're artist isn't dishing good juju, something ain't right. The best description I could give you of Pooka was like a fresh rosebud on a summer day. Freshly picked mint for your mojito. She's just the coolest sailor scout on this side of Calle Ocho. We spoke for a bit, no rush at all even though she had a few people waiting on her. She made me feel like I was important to her. She listened, we exchanged ideas. She told me about her life and her interest. Her passion really shines. She was honest about what would work and what wouldn't, but most importantly she respected my vision. That's something to respect in an artist. Most places in Miami will give you shotty work for a $100 shop minimum and call it day. I've never felt that vibe here, the pieces that come out of this place are masterpieces. I mean this is a quality tattoo place that puts the bullshit aside and outputs some great shit man. Needless to say, I booked my appointment and anything this woman has put on my body has only made it that much better. Ive been wanting these two tattoos for quite a while. Im glad i went with my gut feeling. I have a small tiny heart tattoo on my wrist that was done by a good friend of mine a while ago. But i was ready for the tough stuff, the real deal, the feeling of actually getting it done in an actual shop. I did hunting around the beach and the prices were ridiculous although i know id have to pay good money to get a good job on me, thats on my skin forever. Michael St. Vincent is awesome! He did an amazing job and made me feel at home. I chose him because I saw his great work on the website. I met with him to talk about the design of the tattoo and he drew up a great design for me. We made a few adjustments and I scheduled a time to do the tattoo. I started off my research for my newest tattoo idea online. Googling "Miami tattoo shop" will bring up LOTS of options. I spent about an hour looking at different artist's portfolios and decided that Javier from Ocho Placas was perfect for what I wanted. I called them up and made an appointment. I've had to wait multiple months before just to talk to an artist, so I was expecting the worse. But I had an appointment the next week. I told him what I was looking for and he took my ideas and a basic drawing and drew up the stencil right there. His appointment for that night was a no-show and offered to do it right there! I was so tempted, but I hadn't planned for that kind of speed so I made an appointment two weeks later. My tattoo came out amazingly detailed (more than I even thought it could). And as far as the feel of the shop goes, the places I've been to usually have really good, nice people working there, but it seemed like the guys here are above and beyond awesome. Everyone says hi or wants to admire your new tattoo, they're easy to talk to, and easy to spend time with. The shop itself is very small. I think this leads to a very intimate area and the culture shows that. Unique artwork adorns the walls and gives a very indie feel. *Preface we have never been before we wanted a tattoo and called before hand before driving all the way down in that area as we are on the beach. On the phone the woman at the front with long hair answered and let us know the prices start at $60 so we had made our way down. When we arrived her tone was completely rude and uninterested and she couldn't wait to cut us off. We wanted simple small tattoos which anywhere else would have cost us less than what we quoted and if that had been set ahead of time would have never come down. Two artists interviewed and quoted completely bogus prices to rip us off for the work for a simple quote and a palm tree upwards of 300 for nothing. All ahead trying to say he had to check with his other artist that if he would charge more he would be doing the same. Not only is this absolutely insane but a terrible experience. No help or options provided me and my two friends turned around and left and will never return. The work alone looks sub par but the attitudes of the people in that building should be the first thing to turn you away. TREAD LIGHTLY BEFORE BOOKING WITH THIS PLACE. When I say this is a rip-off that's being nice. Julio I believe was the artist and there was another woman. Such a shame and a waste of time. As for the shop manager, hello Effie. Thanks for responding to the comment and we were told to wait for the other man to come back while he was getting food before they could validate. I moved here not knowing a soul and didn't know where to go to get a good tattoo done other than the oh so famous Miami Ink. I scoured the internet and Yelp of course and came across Ocho Placas and found my guy - Javier Betancourt. I saw his online portfolio and soon went in for my consultation. The first tattoo Javier did for me was a cover-up and he did a great job. You can't even see my old tattoo anymore. The style I wanted it done in was unique and a little non-traditional and he was able to translate my idea really well. I got another large piece done with him soon after and now we're working our way up my back. It's a great little shop off the beaten path and all the guys in there are really nice and just great to shoot the shit with. Saw the glowing reviews and didn't hesitate to make an appointment for a local friend, celebrating her 1 year anniversary in Miami. I sent the artist the drawing she had drafted, to which only a few small modifications needed to be made (to clean it up), and heard back quickly. My friend then spoke to him on the phone to confirm a few details and the communication seemed great. The night before our appointment, we were told the artist was triple booked and that we were being bumped back four hours. That was all well and good until we showed up to be told we were bumped back another hour, and shown something not only completely different than her design and what was discussed, but pretty cheap looking to boot. The shop looked nothing like it was portrayed on the website, and although I'm sure these guys are talented, the sheduling was bogus and it appeared the artist tossed out the original artwork and forgot the entire conversation. I wish that we had the experience we read about from other posters - maybe it was just a busy week. Thankfully we found another place quickly (which was also much cleaner abd professional). read more
