I found Octopus Bar by accident. I was on my way to another location one evening and I called to make sure their kitchen was open and it was already closed and that establishment recommended Octopus Bar. When I arrived, I didn't realize that valet parking was mandatory. I didn't realize I should have made a reservation and there was no seating available at the bar. The place was definitely a hot spot in the city. It's a hookah bar with a nice vibe. The crowd was a little young for me, but I was still able to eat, enjoy the vibe and leave with a nothing but positive things to say about the Octopus Bar. I ordered the lamb chops and had them served with sautéed spinach and asparagus. They also was served with a side of a sauce for the lamb which was OMG delicious. Always a treat. This time I also had the fried eggplant with garlic and peppers. Really tasty. I always try to get there when they 1st open so the service is always attentive. Delicious food and great late night vibe for friends catching up! The service was top notch. Celebrating a friend's birthday, we stopped here to get a late night bite and were more than pleasantly surprised. The waitress explained that the menu changes daily. We shared tasty Salt and Pepper Shrimp, an amazing Wagyu Brisket Sandwich (recommended by the waitress), and delicious bulgogi. This was the best meal and dining experience I've had in a while. Super fun and tasty. The concept itself was a selling point! A restaurant closes and reopens as a secret restaurant at 10PM. Who doesn't want to try that? It makes you feel like a spy. The service was quick and thoughtful. The menu was enticing delicious. The oysters were probably my favorite standout because I wasn't expecting to like them. I am a stickler for crackers hot sauce horse radish and cocktail sauce. They don't have any of that. At first it's a bit daunting to eat a raw oyster with lemon, but these were actually some of the best oysters I've ever had. Top notch on quality and taste across the board. Everyone knows that good ramen is in the quality of the broth. Y'all, I swear all they used was some basic soy sauce and water based "broth". I was so disappointed but hungry so I ate it anyways. The bamboo shoots were also mysteriously super spicy. It made me question if the bamboo shoots were reused from another dish. They still get three stars solely for their lobster roll alone bc it's freaking delicious. If I can get my hands on that recipe, I would never come back here again. Let me just say another hidden "gem". This place was the perfect late night spot for unique bites.Please don't think this place is a five star restaurant. I would say the customer service was definitely five star, as staff and customers were friendly and made you feel welcome. So I had tried a variety of dishes . First I had the oysters. Yes! Oysters on a half shell. Oysters were locally caught right here in Georgia! Second dish was the miso soup, not the greatest but not the worse I've had better. The salt&pepper shrimp was pretty tasty, includes jalapeños. Heads on shrimp so be aware lol! My favorite dish was the fried eggplant with chili pepper sauce. This venue opens up later than all traditional restaurants. 10:30p - 2a. When U walk in, U'll notice the all the fans R on & it's almost like a backyard covered dining concept. They have a bar further into the dining area & the lighting is very intimate; two small tea light candles. It's not white table cloth dining but the Salt&Pepper Shrimp is IT. They fry the entire shrimp & I didn't eat shrimp w/ skin, but I did this entree. It was fried and battered lightly that it was crispy enough to enjoy w/o pealing. They lay it in a bed of fresh chili pprs, grilled onions & jalapeños, I took them off w/ the exception of the onions. Had to order a bowl of rice & it became the best late night snack ever. They have fresh oysters @ $3.00/ea. I had a dozen & they were small in size but tasty. Only thing is that the other bar that's connected may allow their guests to smoke so U can smell it while U eat. So, all in all- I do recommend this spot for late night hunger pangs for fried Salt&PPr Shrimp. U may be wondering Y I gave it only 3*, the server wasn't that pleasant & I the wait for her return seemed like eternity...but the food to me was worth the wait;-) read more

I checked out Octopus Bar late Saturday night/early Sunday morning (http://www.yelp.com/events/atlanta-uye-late-night-the-octopus-bar). Octopus Bar opened Fall 2011 inside So Ba Vietnamese Restaurant in East Atlanta Village. It's a small restaurant/bar that offers an eclectic seasonal menu of farm-fresh foods at relatively affordable prices. The menu is a collaboration between So Ba's chef Nhan Le and ex-Miller Union chef Angus Brown. Octopus Bar is open late night only, beginning nightly at 10pm and closing around 3-3:30am. Not really my ideal dinner time, but it's definitely nice to have a late night option like this. Where else are you going to find oysters, caviar, sea urchin, and lobster rolls after midnight in Atlanta? When you walk into So Ba, make a left to get to Octopus Bar. The first thing you'll notice is it's dark, very dark. And loud, from both the music blaring over the speakers and the patrons trying to talk over one another. The restaurant fits the mold of the neighborhood (EAV): alternative style, grungy, and hipster-ish. Creative, original, and colorful art covers almost every wall, most notably the one behind the bar: it's an intimidating painting of a giant reddish-purple octopus. The place was packed during our visit. The atmosphere was lively and casual. The space isn't terribly big. There are approximately a dozen or so tables of varying sizes. I'd guess tables + bar space could comfortably accommodate 50 people max. Maybe less. There are a couple candle-lit tables outside too. The number of people coupled with the open windows and humid weather didn't create the most ideal dining conditions. I don't know if the building has air conditioning, but quite frankly, it got hot and stuffy inside. The rickety and wobbly ceiling fans didn't help much. As previously noted, it was dark -- so dark that some of my tablemates had to use the flashlight apps on their phones to even read the menu and see their food. I definitely had to step into a more well-lighted area to read the menu. Suffice it to say, I wasn't crazy about the eating environment. It's certainly unique, though. The small menu is a mixture of Asian and American foods and changes periodically. This past weekend's menu had 16 different items, most priced at $10 or less, a good value considering the offerings. Some examples: Shigoku, Beausoleil and Bras D'Or oysters - $2.50 each Bras D'Or sea urchin with quail egg and ponzu sauce - $10 Farro, peaches, squash, basil, and mint - $7 Hamachi kama (Japanese yellowtail collar) - $10 Bo la lot - Vietnamese grape leaf rolls with beef - $7 Salt and pepper shrimp with chili, sweet onion, and jalapeno - $9 The lobster roll ($14) seemed pretty popular. The more expensive items looked the most appealing, though -- pasta with sea urchin ($16), 8-oz ribeye with roasted okra, ham, sweet corn, green tomatoes, and shallots ($25), and daeji bulgogi (spicy Korean pork) with kimchi and pickled radishes ($24). Despite a busy night and our large group, service was very good. Friendly too. Octopus Bar doesn't have a parking lot, so street parking on Gresham and surrounding neighborhood streets is your only option. read more

Tim and Austin were totally great bartenders from the get-go. Friendly, inviting and stylish, this bar boats not only masterful mixologists, but stunning graffiti end unbeatable ambience. The crispy pork ears were fireworks in my mouth, cracking with a splash of rich fat. Their fried zucchini is to die for, slightly sweet with the sting of pepper and chili. I only experienced two gorgeous dishes, and the rare Last Word cocktail, but I'm hungry for what comes next. read more

Rating: 3.5 Stars I do believe that the restaurant could use some signage. We walked around in circles 4 about 15-20 minutes before someone was willing to walk us to the restaurant. We had seen it several times but it appears that it was closed and it did not have sinage that stated Octopus Bar. If it did, I didn't notice it. Upon entering someone met us in the lobby area and told us to go through the left hand side which appeared to be a patio. It is definitely some type of add on to the main building. Is very dark in the inside which is kind of cool and there is quite a bit of graffiti on the wall which was also very cool. All the tables had candles and the place seemed very clean. When we arrive at 10:30 there were very few customers. Within 20 minutes the place was packed. I noticed a lot of people ordering the ramen but we selected the lobster roll, a salad, and the Cobia cheek and fin.The lobster roll ($22) is pretty good but the Cobia cheek and fin was only so-soamd very fatty. I noticed several people order the ramen but many of the people were at the bar. I gave it 3 stars because the location is hard to find. People are allowed to smoke in there and it's a small not well ventilated space. I did enjoy the fun atmosphere and the lobster roll was really good. Do be prepared to have a changing menu that don't have your typical dishes which is exciting. Also there is not much parking. read more

I just left octopus bar, and as I was leaving, I told my friends out loud that the service was dog sh*t. Pretty sure a waitress heard me. I admit I'm partly leaving this review because I feel bad. Food: wow, was exceptional. Had whole fried shrimp, nice and crispy and full of flavor. Ate them whole. Then we had mussel toast, which was fantastic. Then we had a plate of dry fried eggplant, and it was cooked wonderfully and perfectly seasoned. It was so good it inspired me to make the dish at home, or as best I could anyway. The food drove the 4th star, and it was fun to share with friends. Service: They opened late (10:30PM on Friday night) which is strange. Once inside, it seemed busy and they were having a hard time keeping up. Friendly none the less. Atmosphere: kind of a dive bar/back porch feel to it. Not large. Strange and so unique. I have to give this place 1 star. Not for the food which was amazing but for the service. My waitress who "claims" she's the manager was unbelievable. Not only did I have to go to the bar and get my own drinks but I also had to go to the kitchen and check on my food and go to the service station and get my own plates. Strangely none of the white people here had the same issues. All the while she was making out with her boyfriend in the lobby right through the glass doors in front of me while claiming she was "super busy". When I asked to speak to a manager she told me it was her. She came armed with the bartender I guess dealing with black women requires a man to back you up. She then dismissed my grievances again and stomped off. The bartender stayed and listened, but then was super sarcastic apologizing. Apparently he shares his co-workers views. Octopus Bar used to be one of my favorite places to take my out of town friends when they visited me in Atlanta. I think they've gone through a few changes, and recently, I haven't enjoyed the menu as much. The menu changes daily, and they used to have some very unique dishes using great locally sourced ingredients. However, lately, they've had some very questionable items that are just not up to par of what they used to be. On my most recent visit, they were serving a very plain sesame chicken dish and average tacos, which surprised me. My favorites -- the salt and pepper shrimp -- was still great, but I'm not sure about the quality of the shrimp. Finally, the pork belly congee I had was fantastic; the pork belly was cooked perfectly and really complimented the congee. While it's still a step above the rest of the bar scene's food, it used to be a true culinary experience. read more

I can't remember how I'd heard about Octopus Bar. I remember being intrigued about an establishment that only opened after most places closed, and still sometimes had a line out the door. I immediately fell in love with it. Octopus Bar is "housed" within the Vietnamese pho house So Ba. Owner Nhan Le allegedly set out to do something special for his fellow restaurant industry peers, and Octopus Bar just knocks it right out of the park. Of course, the public now knows of Octopus Bar's greatness and you may or may not be surrounded by industry professionals. I was really pleasantly surprised on a number of different levels. I was expecting pretense. I found none. It wasn't overrun with hipsters. The crowd was really diverse on several dimensions. The atmosphere was paradoxically charged and laid back all at the same time. It felt good to be there. It's going to feel really good to go back. The menu (which changes daily) is an amazing collection of crowd-pleasers, international comestibles, and the occasional culinary mashup. This menu is all about high-quality flavor. If chefs had a playground, this menu would be it. I think the menu is primarily designed for snacking and sharing, though there are meal-sized entrees on deck. And I'm told there are secret items that aren't printed on the menu. I'll certainly be asking more about that next time I go. We shared: The Lobster Roll - Delicious. I can see why it gets some hype. Big, meaty pieces of sweet Maine lobster. This is one of things that needs slow savoring, even though the temptation is there to go all cookie-monster on it and make it disappear. The Ramen - A giant bowl of a fantastic, savory broth with all sorts of ramen goodness in it. REAL ramen. Good for the soul. The Beets. Oh, man. Whatever cheese was on those beets was very, very nice. I'm a huge fan of beets. The current menu seems to change the beets up a bit. I'm just glad beets remain on the menu. Everything we had totally hit the spot. Staff took care of our every desire. I wanted to stay late and continue to sample more things, but that will have to wait for another day. The price point was quite decent for what we had. Overall, I love this place. My friend's only criticism: the napkins we got seemed a bit chintzy next to all the greatness they were serving that night. I'm looking forward to my next trip there. Located in the same building that houses SoBa, Octopus Bar is only open after 10:30. The menu changes daily and is based on the freshest ingredients the chef can get his hands on. Popular dishes include the ramen and the lobster roll. I would stay away from the ramen just because it's extremely salty and heavy. The lobster roll is quite pricey, but prepared very well. Some of my favorites include the salt and pepper shrimp as well as the herring when available. However, if you are uncomfortable with eating the shells on the shrimp, you lose a lot of the flavor. When you are craving more than bar food for late night eats, Octopus Bar fits the bill. There is nothing fancy about the space but there is about the food. The sweet corn ravioli with ricotta and basil was scrumptious. I really wanted the lobster roll but I was told that is always on the menu but the sweet corn ravioli is temporary, thus my pick. At 1a, this dish and a glass of Prosecco was a perfect finish to a great night out. The service was less than stellar, the atmosphere is less than stellar but the food - stellar! read more

The service is super slow on weekends but if you're here to chill and not eat, it won't really matter. Apparently you're suppose to eat the salt and pepper shrimp with the shell and head o. So buyer beware. Update: I got the lobster roll on my second visit. It was cold and flavorless and tiny. Totally disappointing. I have yet to have anything I like to eat here so have to bump it down. Best! Ramen! I consider myself a true Roman fan girl, I even make it from scratch at home, and the Roman at this bar is by far the side of the Pacific. Just post far only preparers 20 balls are from in each night, so make sure that you get there early enough to get some, especially if it's a Friday or Saturday. You do not want to miss out on this awesomeness! The Ramen was piled high with chewy noodles, and the ratio between noodles and broth was so perfect that we finished both at almost the same time. The chashu was the best I've ever had in a restaurant. Not mushy, but with bite and texture. The soft boiled, seasoned egg was done perfectly. (I don't know why so many restaurants hard boil their eggs or have trouble soft boiling them.) The yolk was still runny and the white had been marinated and was cooked. This is how it's supposed to be done, folks. We devoured the bowl and wish that we had ordered another. If the other things we got at Octopus Bar were not as tasty as the Ramen, but they were interesting. We had a salad involving white anchovies, mandarin oranges, cucumber, coriander, and cilantro. That combination of flavors wasn't particularly my thing, but I knew when I ordered it that it would be an adventure. I also got a fish dish called ca kho that was tasty enough but too spicy for me to enjoy it fully. It had catfish, caramel, fish sauce, bacon, black pepper, and red jalapeño over rice. I was so excited to try out Octopus Bar. I really liked the appeal of a late night option that wasn't Waffle House. We stopped in on a Saturday; it took us a while to realize that it's a pop up in the restaurant So Ba. Once inside we were seated right away. My main beef with Octopus Bar was this- me and my companion ordered the salt and pepper shrimp and the waitress failed to mention that the shrimp still has the head on and was fried with the shell on. Now I'm an adventurous eater but I would think a dish that is prepared like that the waitress would warn you prior to ordering. When it came out- I tried to eat it but the texture just threw me off too much with the shells. They were cool about switching it out for something else( I got the pork belly and green beans which was good). The other downside is that dishes come out slow here so I was left starving. Good addition to EAV, maybe just more explanation on the menu. read more
