Definitely needs more options for vegetarians but my friends loved the non veg food here!

I really like the fact they have an outdoor seating area in the middle of downtown. Thats rare! The service is also friendly, which is a plus. But, I've noticed that, although their menu changes during the week, which is also a plus to me, it's usually switched out with different kinds of fried food and more fried food. So if fried food is your thing, then this is your place! I'll still be coming back here if I feel like fried food though! read more

Work right upstairs so it's extremely convenient to not have to go far for great food. Excellent little eatery that specializes in healthy, Japanese influenced cuisine. Run by a husband and wife team from New York (via Japan) who both came here to open Morimoto's. It can get busy during the downtown lunch rush, but the orders come out fairly quickly. The chef worked at some top Japanese restaurants in New York before moving to Hawaii last year so the food is impeccable in quality of ingredients, flavor, and presentation. You are essentially getting a meal prepared by a top class chef for the price of a plate lunch! What a bargain. There are usually about 3 to 4 lunch items that change periodically. Unless you don't like a certain type of food on the menu, you can't go wrong with your selection. The chef's wife works the registar. She speaks excellent English and you get top-notch Japanese service. This is a gem in downtown. Nothing else comes close in quality and service for $10 for lunch. The pork ginger is to die for. They also have vegetarian cold noodles which can be enjoyed by carnivores and vegans alike. read more

This place is a Hidden Treasure. Next to the HGEA building on Merchant St., it is hard to see from the road. But the food, great. They have a changing menu that always has delicious items. I have not had anything bad or mediocre. Today, had the Chicken Katsu Curry and it was great as usual. I had been debating over that and the Meatloaf, both looked great. But the smell of the Curry won me over. I still want to try their meatloaf. I think the serving size is perfect. I walk away feeling great, not stuffed and not still hungry. I have tried OEC Cafe a couple times. The first time I had a cold noodle with veggies. That was pretty good however the noodles were just okay. I think they might use Sun Noodles, and I really don't think Sun makes good noodles at all. The second time I had their beef stew and that was OEC (oishii). Not sure how exactly they make their beef stew but it tasted buttery. I also like that they put mushrooms in their stew. If you get there around 11, it's a good time the place is totally empty! read more

Went here on a Friday. Decided to go there since I heard positive comments. Trying to eat heather and this place has daily selections and the regular menu items.I had the spinach soba with kabocha (pumpkin) fresh broccoli, and small musubi. I was pleasantly surprised with the sesame sauce. A little spicy but very tasty. Everything was fresh and tasted great. A worthwhile vegetarian meal. I work across the street and never knew this place was here. Very small restaurant with Japanese style menu. Lots of outdoor seating. They are open for breakfast, from 7 am. The menu is light with random sandwich, and pasta options. I spent $10 for a panini and a small udon. Very delicious meal, I will come again to try the other options. read more

ran across this new place, it's set back a little so it's not very visible as you stroll by limited menu, with some ready made sandwiches, pastries, and stuff, and 3-4 lunch menu items. the lunch menu changes weekly, according to the cashier tried the tan tan noodles for $7. broth was pretty good, noodles good, but wish there was a little bit more as I was still hungry. there was a little cup of high quality rice with corn mixed in, that was a little odd, but appreciated the high quality grains i may stop by in the near future for a no crust sandwich, which looks much better than the ones in the convenience store nearby me guess it's time for me to grab some dessert since I'm still hungry, maybe now I don't mind having a little space left in my tummy read more

This Japanese couple used to be chefs in NYC. Best pork tonkatsu on island. Whole grain fresh Udon and spinach noodles. Love this place

The area is a bit small and while I probably would take my meal to go typically, there is an area where one can eat but probably no room to chat with one's friends, unless you go outside (not entirely sure if that seating area belongs to the cafe or not). The person in the front was very friendly and helpful letting my co-worker and I know what was in the dish or how the chicken was made. They're in a pretty good location, being behind the post-office. I didn't have one of the hot lunches they offered but instead had a BLT sandwich which was rather refreshing and delicious. The plus was there was no crust (if you like the crusts... oh well). It made me think "Japanese". BLT is an easy sandwich to get but it is always easy to mess up and it was just made exactly right without too much mayo and the right proportion of bacon, lettuce, and tomato. I would need to go back there and try more things. read more

I love love love this place! It's a little hidden, and a little far from the core of downtown eateries, but definitely worth the extra 5 minute walk. I always get the Vegan Cold Soba with sesame dipping sauce (usually the spinach noodle, but the whole grain udon is just as yummy). Each plate comes with 2 sides, a vegetable like kabocha and a mini mixed rice musubi. Be sure to check them out on Facebook as well, they post weekly specials and pop-ups. The shop is very clean and even has outdoor seating under some trees. It's a great spot to eat and get fresh air at the same time. I'm positive I've been going to OEC at least once or twice a month since I started working downtown about 2 years ago. read more

I come here for lunch about once a week. They are more of a Japanese style plate lunch place. They usually have a fee entrees for the week, my favorite being the green thai curry, so delicious! Their playe lunches come with either brown or white rice, potato salad and green salad. Portions are good, I never finish and have leftovers for the next day. They also have sandwiches and salads, smoothies, muffins. Their cheese cakes are the best, petite but so good and only $2. read more

Found this little gem of a cafe, and gave the Vegan Cold Spinach Noodles a try. It was a refreshing meal that included noodles, sushi, kabocha, and carrots. The shoyu sauce was delicious as was each individual component. read more

Absolutely love this place! Omg, everything is so delicious! My favorite menus are chicken with white creamy sauce, chicken with Korean spicy sauce and pumpkin pudding! This unassuming cafe serves up some seriously great food! You have to check their Facebook page for weekly and daily pop-up specials. Their mabo tofu monchong is exquisite. The monchong is delicately fried, and it's neatly bathed in a sauce of finely diced tofu in a perfectly spiced sauce. All the entrees come with rice (brown or white), a mixed green salad, and a potato salad that is inexplicably fluffy and light. I left with my monchong in hand, and a stranger stopped me on the street to ask me if OEC Cafe was good. I think I must have had a huge smile on my face as I was leaving with my food. Anyhow, I started raving to him about the food for what must have been five minutes or so. I'm a huge fan of this place. Sometimes lunch is the hardest decision of the day. After I've wandered fruitlessly across the Bishop Street desert, I find myself happily ending up here for a lunch that has never disappointed me yet! read more
