Soup & entree selection changes daily....seems like a good variety!
    Trish N.

Omg, why has no one ever Yelp'd this place before?? My guess is it's just a hidden gem that their patrons have been keeping to themselves, hehehe. ;D. I happened to be looking at the website for Abilities Unlimited (a local non-profit) & saw that one of the training grounds for their clients is this cute little "cafe" on the 5th floor of DOH (just outside of downtown, across from Queens Hospital). There was no other info anywhere online, so I just HAD to check this out for myself...& it's open to the public! Just sign in with the guard downstairs & he'll let you up the elevator. Ooh, love the little "secret" location! Now, keep in mind that nothing here could be called "fancy" by any means, but everything's clean, staff is super nice, prices are CHEAP, & most importantly, the food is YUMMY, fresh & clearly made from scratch!! Seems the sandwich & salad selection are always the same, but the soup & entree changes daily. Today's soup was Toscana, so of course I had to try...& it was great!! Creamy, tasty, and very filling, loaded with sausage, potatoes, onions & spinach (I'm used to kale, but the spinach worked just fine)...I could've just had a large soup ($3.75) & been totally full, but I couldn't bear to only try one thing... Unfortunately they were out of fried rice for the day, but this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, bc I tried the Bacon Avocado sandwich instead (on the recommendation of the cashier)...and WOW!! I know, I know, it's just a sandwich--and I'm not even a big fan of sandwiches--but this was an exception. O:-) Smooth & tasty avocado, UBER-CRISPY bacon, & beautiful fresh cucumber, lettuce, sprouts & tomatoes (I don't usually eat sprouts either)...seriously, $5 is a bargain...& I had to stuff myself just to finish half of that, along with half the soup! Overall, the ambiance here is probably 2-3 stars (kind of an old school cafeteria/diner-look)...but that really doesn't matter when the food, staff & prices were a solid 5 stars. Throw in the fact that it's helping people to get back on their feet & learn important job skills...well, I'll definitely be back. Maybe for lunch tomorrow?! ;D

    Meatloaf winner!!

Plantoem offers a relaxing ambiance upon entrance. Navigate the jungle of plants to access the cafe counter. I requested the Yerba Mate which is only available for in-house. A container with filtered straw was provided alongside a thermal carafe...there was enough hot water for 2.5 servings. The barista was a bit bemused when I ( humorously ) mentioned I swallowed some sediment from the straw...not being used to drinking yerba mate in this traditional way. I felt a little less of a gringo after that beverage. The main dining area is to the left. A nook to the back of the counter is a laptop/device free zone...and I sat in that hideaway...perused a book on interior design ( a few books are available) ...and enjoyed the yerba mate. I was staying in Waikiki and Kona Coffee Purveyors was just a short walk away in the International Marketplace shopping center. As I came up to the shopping center shortly after 7am, I noticed a long line, and thought to myself, this couldn't possibly be for Kona Coffee Purveyors, right?? But unfortunately for me, it was. I didn't see how long the line extended, but I knew I didn't have time to wait, so I ended up getting coffee elsewhere. A few hours later, around 11:30am, I was back in the Waikiki area and happened to be walking past Kona Coffee Purveyors. I saw there were maybe a handful of people in line, so I decided to drop in. I ended up getting a latte, black sesame kouign amann, and pandan coconut tapioca pudding. My favorite was the pandan coconut tapioca pudding which was delightfully light and not too sweet dessert. Black sesame kouign amann: A twist on the classic kouign amann. A beautiful blend of crunchy and soft. The black sesame filling adds a nice flavor. Pandan coconut tapioca pudding: Pandan pudding, coconut tapioca, topped with coconut macaroon. This seems to be a seasonal/limited item. Their desserts are from b patisserie, and they all looked soo enticing and pretty! It was a nice place to sit and leisurely enjoy coffee and pastries. I would say this place is not worth it right when they open, only because the line is soo long and it's very hectic with people fighting for seating and getting their orders in. I would recommend going later in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid the morning craze.

Sunday street parking is free so we parked in one of the metered stalls on Sheridan Street. Free parking This place is located on the 3rd floor. We opted to take the stairs to get our steps in but there is also an elevator available. The shop is very tidy and for seating, inside there is a communal table for up to 6 and a table for 2. Outside there are tables on the lanai area. The menu is limited but has both sweet and savory options as well as a good selection of coffees and teas. Today we tried the Guava with cream cheese and Black Sesame with cream cheese. The bread made made both yummy! Both were not too sweet and served in a lovely presentation. Prices were pushing the wallet for the serving size however, I can understand it because of the time and effort that it takes to make the toast presentation make you do a double take. Overall, the service was good and we did not feel rushed at all. We were able to slow down our typical pace and just enjoy each other's company. This definitely a place I would love to share a mommy-daughter breakfast excursion.

It's a bit hard to find though. Located on the top floor of a complex with other food options. You take the elevator up. I'd recommend parking in the Walmart structure across the street because otherwise parking is also hard to find. I got a seasonal drink (white sesame kinako latte with a shot of matcha) and at $11 it was maybe the priciest cup of caffeine I've ever had haha. But it was interesting and tasty and got me refreshed, so worth savoring as a special treat. My husband got a maple cocoa cold foam coffee and it was also delicious! We also got a couple of baked items, which took a while (barista did thank us for waiting) to come out but the tuna melt toast especially hit the spot. The dashi tamago sando was just alright. They also have dessert treats which looked delicious.

Every morning, without fail, people gathered outside waiting patiently for pastries. No flashy signs. No gimmicks. Just quiet consistency. That alone intrigued me. By the second day, my mind was made up. I'm an early riser, so the plan was simple: go on my usual morning run and arrive before the rush. Japanese culture and craftsmanship have long fascinated me. Through close friends with family roots tracing back to Japan, I've developed a deep appreciation for the culture -- the discipline, the rituals, the precision, and the respect for process. There's a beauty in the intentional pace at which things are done. Nothing rushed. Nothing careless. This bakery embodied that philosophy perfectly. The space itself was small, modest, and aromatic. No overdesigned interiors. No influencer bait. Just the comforting smell of fresh bread and butter hanging in the air. Some bakeries hide behind elaborate architecture and presentation, but this place understood something more important: when the product is exceptional, the product becomes the attraction. The pastries ranged from playful and charming to elegant and refined. The Salt & Butter bread was an instant staple -- savory, warm, and impossibly light. The dough practically dissolved like air. Thankfully, nothing felt overly heavy, because I completely lost control of my ordering strategy. The Kobo Kuma -- a soft bear-shaped bun filled with homemade vanilla bean custard -- was perfection. Equal parts cute and comforting. The Cinnamon Roll was solid, but the Haupia pastry completely stole the show. For those unfamiliar, Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian coconut pudding found throughout Polynesia. The flavor here was subtle yet lingering, delicate without disappearing. The kind of flavor that quietly stays with you long after the last bite. Then came the Blueberry Danish -- beautiful, buttery, and perfectly sweet. I didn't even make it to the savory options this time, which honestly just gives me another reason to return. And I absolutely will -- whether back here in Hawaii or perhaps at one of their mainland locations in Los Angeles. Some places become popular because of hype. Others because of quality. This bakery earned its line.
