So here's a milestone -- I just got named an Elite Reviewer on Yelp for my food reviews. Makes…read moresense, I guess, since I've spent a lifetime cooking. If I have an amazing dish out somewhere, I can usually carry it home in my head and come up with a knockoff that's not half bad. Christmas Eve was always my big night -- also my birthday -- when I hosted the Feast of the Seven Fishes. At one point, over 30 people would pack in to share it. For 30 years straight, the fish came from one place only: Peter's Seafood in Midland Park. But tonight, what's on my mind isn't Yelp or fish markets. It's my neighbor Pete. He was my best friend here -- a guy who could spin stories about New York in the 1950s like he was giving you a private tour. Sometimes he'd get a "Woolley" (that's Italian for craving) for lobster or clams. I'd drive north to Peter's, haul it back to Monroe, and we'd make a night of it: good food, better conversation. Pete passed away this weekend. I know it comes with the territory of living in a senior village -- neighbors will pass on. But this is my first loss here, and it feels like a big one.Pete would laugh if I told him that I needed to add great ambience in my side yard to make this a complete Yelp review...

The prices are high, but about fit for the area. I tend to shop here only for specific items or to patronize their wine selection or liquor selection. The cashiers are generally on top of things and the store is very clean and organized. However, last night, I felt that the welcoming atmosphere was not there. My partner and I walked in at about 8:50 (being very aware of their closing time of 9 pm), and came to get one item quickly as they were the only store that carries it nearby. Almost immediately after walking in, a larger man in grey sweatpants walked over to the liquor counter and goes on the intercom, saying something to the effect of "the store is closing, get your stuff and go to the register because we want to go home". I can understand this feeling as I've worked customer service and retail and always disliked when people came in near closing. However, we were right behind the man using the intercom and were out the door in less than 2 minutes. I would have appreciated him coming to us and greeting us with the store closing information, rather than a gruff intercom grumble. We understood the need to move quickly without this. Maybe you need someone else to take the closing shift? Regardless, we were aware that we were there close to the wire, and we got our stuff and got out after a stare from the grumpy old man.

My careful purchases with the other coupons came up to $19.38. Oh dear. Never good at math! I contemplated buying something but there is no longer any chance of buying something for $1 and I was going to have to spend $3 to save two. Even with my bad math skills I knew that was crazy! The manager Randy saved the day. He asked what my problem was and I told him. He said let me buy a coffee to bring it up to $20. How nice is that?

This is by far the WORST grocery store to shop at in the Ridgewood, NJ area. I predict when Costco…read moreopens in Paramus this store will shut at doors within a year. Produce is consistently out of stock or rotten. Dairy products are consistently out of date. The store is dingy. The fresh meat range is lacking. The parking is awful. The half the staff is rude and unprofessional. There is obviously a staffing issue as products on the shelves are constantly unavailable and cashiers are few. There is a "service manager" there with long red hair and tattoos who works the front end. Her unprofessional demeanor is explosive. She has a terrible temper and her "RBF" is unmistakable. Avoid. This is a store that is union run (you can surely tell) and owned by Royal Ahold N.V. They head other chain stores in the US including Food Lion and Giant. With so many Stop & Shop stores in New Jersey on the chopping block as of late, this one is sure to follow suit to cut this one from their portfolio. Caveat Emptor

The flow of the parking lot is hazardous. The management slowly walks around with their mouths hanging open, looking like their in shock that people actually patronize this store. They avoid eye contact while simultaneously having conversations with other workers in the middle of the busy, narrow isles. The store is neat, but narrow and dated. They have an ok selection of products and their prices are decent. I would have given more stars, but this location lost them at check out. The cashier didn't greet us - she just started slamming our purchases against the scanner plate and tossing the items to the other end of the register. Soda, plastic cups, paper plates - all flung carelessly down for me to try to catch and put into my cart. Thank God I didn't buy eggs! We only came here because we were in the neighborhood and had to grab a few things. In the future, we'll just go out of our way to shop at a better store.
