So here's a milestone -- I just got named an Elite Reviewer on Yelp for my food reviews. Makes sense, I guess, since I've spent a lifetime cooking. If I have an amazing dish out somewhere, I can usually carry it home in my head and come up with a knockoff that's not half bad. Christmas Eve was always my big night -- also my birthday -- when I hosted the Feast of the Seven Fishes. At one point, over 30 people would pack in to share it. For 30 years straight, the fish came from one place only: Peter's Seafood in Midland Park. But tonight, what's on my mind isn't Yelp or fish markets. It's my neighbor Pete. He was my best friend here -- a guy who could spin stories about New York in the 1950s like he was giving you a private tour. Sometimes he'd get a "Woolley" (that's Italian for craving) for lobster or clams. I'd drive north to Peter's, haul it back to Monroe, and we'd make a night of it: good food, better conversation. If you are a seafood lover and in the northern New Jersey area this place is a must try. A lot of the local restaurants get their seafood from them and it's always delicious. If you go to the actual store, I suggest going earlier in the morning as it does get busy. They have the best salmon and tuna in the area. They also have some premade seasonings that are absolutely delicious . Highly recommend trying them. read more

I was turned onto this place by a friend who is a chef at one of the local country clubs. Their fish is so fresh, as an amateur sushi chef I will always try to get salmon from Peters even before going to Hmart, Mitsuwa, or the other Japanese markets. My first trip here was a recon. Came to browse and ask questions. As I was leaving, a jovial and fit gentleman with great teeth and winning smile came out after me -- curious about my questioning his staff. He then offered me a personal tour of his entire operation with a narrated history. Peters has been a local fishmonger and purveyor for more than 30 years. The restaurants in the region all know him because he supplies most of them. He built this facility in the past year from the ground up to house a serious wholesale operation with a loading dock, huge freezer facility, processing and break down area and of course, an upscale retail store. Peter even showed off his employee lounge, shower and bathrooms -- all impeccably clean. The seafood in the retail store is immaculately displayed and smells as fresh as the ocean. He stocks various sizes and grades of lobster, clams, oysters, crab meat and dozens of varieties of fish -- from salmon to fresh sardines, to everything in between. All the accouterments to a great seafood dinner are on hand as well -- from lemons to sauces. I returned for some fish and scallops recently with Sweetie in tow. The Lemon sole was like butter -- which I simply seasoned and broiled over lemon slices. The scallops were huge and dry -- not like the ones you often find commercially -- floating in a milky exudate, and the inedible tough muscle that just about every other seller leaves on the scallops to make weight -- was cleaned from these puppies. I minimally seasoned and oiled these and grilled them quickly. Our first meal with Peter's seafood was simple but spectacular. The fish and scallops were so sweet and tender. Can't remember eating fresher seafood at home at any price. Peter's is pricier than some supermarket chains I frequent (H-mart comes to mind) but no one can touch his quality. Having witnessed how much attention Peter invests in the smallest details of this operation shows up in the flavor of his seafood. The best quality seafood around at any price -- hands down. This IS the best place for fish -- many of the finer restaurants use them as well. No foreign junk here all the good stuff and super fresh. Not inexpensive but well worth it unless you like to settle for tue pre frozen factory fish at groceries. Cash only but there an ATM in the store. read more

Peter's is now a large free-standing building and gives a nice presentation with ample parking. It's a far cry from the store front they'd had prior for many years. Spacious, spotless retail space that's quite impressive with the fishes of course displayed on ice behind glass. Also some prepared fishes, which I've never tried as I love to cook. I always choose domestic caught fish to support American fisherman, so this can sometimes be a challenge here. The prices are high and yes it's cash or check only. Been coming here for years and have only had one problem with cod. It was wormy. Apparently this is common for cod, however I don't wish to eat it this way! Some places candle their cod so they can see if it's wormy- I'd have to think this is not a process they do here. I returned it and they refunded my money but it's not close to home so that was an annoyance & now nothing for dinner since I was unaware until I was preparing dinner. I purchased a whole, frozen octopus. When I got it home I was shocked to see that it was from China. I called the store & was told it was caught in the US, but shipped to China to be packaged?! Seriously- I think not. That's absurd. The last thing I want is any food product from China. I went back & got a refund. I like to go to fish stores that label the fish showing where they were caught. Peter's doesn't do that. I had to specifically ask where it was from. I prefer Wegmans, Whole Foods or the Market Basket where everything is labeled. I've never had a problem at either of these places, unlike here. To recap, I've never received fish that wasn't fresh but I like knowing what waters the fish was caught in and Peter's is also quite expensive and do my takes cash or check. 2nd year in a row this place screwed us over. Ordered oysters last year Christmas Eve. This year for 12/23, yesterday. Have received NEITHER of these orders. They take orders & say they'll call you to get in line to p/u. Last year my husband waited for their call which never came. He went there & got in line & was yelled at because he was in line without getting called. Told he would have to wait over an hour. This was already late in the day. He had to leave. One drawback is they are cash only. If you are like me it is a rare day that you have cash with you. You can't beat this place. They were always great, but the new location is even better. They have a new process for ordering on Christmas day. Instead of standing outside, they set you up with a day and approximate time. When it's ready they text you. There is a drive through going around back. You give them the order number they send in the text and they get the fish for you and bring it to the car. You pay them there and you're on your way!! The past few times I went in , I was the first in line and the employee s behind the counter asked the person behind me if they needed help. Today the man behind the counter first said he didn't see me then he said he did not hear me because of my mask with a sarcastic tone. I speak to people at a 10 ft distance at work all day long & everyone hears me. I called the manager who said my perception was impossible & that no one would be biased against me because I was wearing a mask. All the employees serving today were maskless. I am immunocompromised . Because i was completely dismissed I will not return. no one sees me no one hears me no one will see my money but others will hear my yelp. My wife and I spent too long disliking our supermarket seafood purchases and eventually had to stop buying seafood for our family. Since patronizing Peter's, seafood has again become a treat. This past Saturday I bought branzino and shrimps. The fish was very fresh.. but I was really surprised when they charged me $2.00 more a pound to have the fish cleaned. I buy my fish all the time at the Whole Foods market in Ridgewood on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. They never charge me anything to get fish cleaned. My husband ordered 1 1/2 pounds of salmon, they gave him about 3/4 of a pound and charged him $21. They didn't even take the time to remove the scales. They are shady characters and we will never go there again. They should be grateful that people are giving them business during a time when many small businesses are losing money, but instead they make up for their losses by cheating customers! First of all if I could put ZERO stars, I would. This place doesn't deserve a star. So I walk in at about 3:45 pm on a Monday; place wasn't even busy. There were two people behind the counter (one was the owner, I remember from a pic on the wall of their old store) he was having a conversation with some guy - the other guy was finishing up an order for the SAME guy the owner was talking to. So I waited (no one else there yet). I was checking out the tuna and shrimp pasta salad to see if they had enough. I was moving around so I wasn't completely invisible. The owner continues his conversation and the other guy filling up pasta salad with his ungloved hand INSIDE the container. About 5 minutes standing there, still no one acknowledged to help me. No one even looked at me. The owner continued his conversation. The other guy moved on to do something else with his ungloved hand. Another customer walks in and without acknowledging that I was waiting, the owner asks this lady if he could help her. And without skipping a beat this lady tells him what she wants and she gets served. I guess I was invisible. I didn't say anything and walked out. I will not give Peter's Fish the pleasure of taking my money and will never go there again. Very very poor customer service. read more

Was recently introduced to Peter's Fish Market and I have to say, from what I had it is top notch... Same Class as Anchor Seafood in Montvale and JR Lobster in Suffern, NY. Diver Scallops: Grade A flavor and a perfect sear. Took out the grill pan for these after they sat in Olive Oil, Sea salt, Pepper and Garlic for 30-45 minutes. These were Cape Cod off the dock quality! Sashimi Grade Tuna: Ace of Diamonds!! Stunning Piece of Fish that when done in Soy, olive oil, sea salt and cracked pepper is that of the highest end restaurant you've been to. Cooked 30 seconds each side on a 700 degree Weber!! Went in to order a few days before pickup -- big order. The place looked amazingly clean and when you can't smell fish in a fish market, you know it must be good. Never seen a lobster tank so clean ... says a lot. Nice staff, friendly, busy but respectful and not nasty. Went to pick it up, wasn't told it would be a long wait. We're talking 85 minutes, thankfully it was freakishly warm out on Dec 23rd in NJ. Line outside with a "take a number". Dunkin Donuts next door with a fun memorabilia store attached to it. That killed some time. This is the only reason for the .5 star. The wait wasn't awful but would have planned my day better knowing this in advance. Also, when ordering they should have mentioned the cash only or check. Luckily I had plenty of time to go tot he bank while waiting on pickup day. The taste: Amazing, Fresh, among the best I've ever eaten. To take it a step further, when we were cooking it all day (frying, lobster sauce, baking), the house did not smell like fish! Everyone who walked in the door was shocked. Again, fresh fish shouldn't smell or taste fishy. The price: Didn't think it was that expensive and was expecting to pay so much more. Very rude!!! Called for an order at 1 pm. Told them i would pick up 4:30ish. They told me it would be ready. Gave them my name & phone number. Went to pick up...nothing was done. No apologies, very nasty. Was told it they could do it now but it would take 2 hours. They never called to say order would be delayed. I feel they just forgot to do it. I was treated like crap.
