One of my friends told me about Off the Waffle (OTW) and it was his go-to breakfast place whenever he visited Eugene. I am proud to say that, after several years of hearing about this place, I finally got to experience it for myself during my first trip to Eugene. OTW is a quaint eatery and I loved this café's atmosphere. At 8:30 a.m. on a Monday, it wasn't crowded, which was great for our group of four that ended up staying there for several hours for a breakfast meeting. There were numerous tables available and everyone working there was very cheerful and pleasant. I had studied the eatery's menu beforehand and was torn among several items, but my breakfast choice for that day ultimately depended on my mood ... and I was in the mood for something sweet. You just take one of the menus by the counter and step up to the counter to order, and then you grab a table and your food is bussed out to you. We all got coffee and could help ourselves to the drinks, as well as napkins and utensils, and we enjoyed the pleasant sunshine from our window booth. Our breakfast came out in no time and we were all pleased with the taste and presentation. I know there are other OTW locations, but I'm just glad I finally got to visit one. If I'm ever in Eugene again, I know I'll definitely be back to this breakfast joint. Here's what we got during this visit: "The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy": One of the ladies in our group ordered this waffle because it was balanced and she liked the fact that it came with one egg (not two, as did the "Goat in Headlights"). It featured one sunny side up egg with oozing yolk, bacon and real maple syrup. I actually almost ordered this waffle myself, but at the last minute, my craving for something sweet won out. She really enjoyed the blend of bacon and the sweeter maple syrup, and the egg soaked the waffle with that yolky goodness. If I ordered this waffle, I would have added Havarti cheese because I love Havarti. If I'm ever in the mood for a more savory waffle--but don't want TOO many ingredients--this is the one I would choose. "Goat in Headlights": Two of the guys in our group ordered this waffle, and I have to admit, it looked stellar and I wanted one as well! It featured a fresh waffle topped with Chevre, avocado, fresh basil, two sunny side up eggs, smoked paprika, fresh coriander and an olive oil drizzle. Talk about pulling out all the stops! I definitely want to try this savory entrée one day because I do love basil, sunny side up eggs and olive oil. I'm curious to see what Chevre tastes like, because I don't think I've had it on anything before. But the waffle dish looked truly tantalizing and I just might have to make an exception to my "sweets for breakfast" norm to sample this dish. I would just order this waffle sans the avocado. "The Beloved Bully": This was the sweet waffle that I got, and I made sure to ask for the strawberries on the side because, let's face it -- I was sold on this waffle because of that dark chocolate. This crispy waffle came topped with Belgian chocolate chips, fresh strawberries and a swirl of housemade dark chocolate sauce. That dark chocolate sauce was light yet decadent at the same time. I'm a huge fan of dark chocolate, so I was pleased to see that the waffle was topped with a good amount of the chocolate sauce, without the proportion being overwhelming. I loved the waffles from OTW because the exterior is perfectly crispy without being too hard, and the interior is moist, soft and spongy (without being soggy ... unless, of course, your waffle has egg yolk on it). I enjoyed my sweet breakfast treat and would definitely order this waffle again. "Caprese": If I were to choose a different waffle from the above three to try, I would have gone with this Caprese because I actually really do like Caprese sandwiches. This waffle comes with fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, avocado, tomato, a dash of sea salt, fresh ground black peppercorn and an olive oil drizzle. I would just order this entrée sans the avocado and tomato, but I really look forward to trying that fresh mozzarella and sea salt topping one day. "The H-Bomb": When it comes to sweets, I normally don't like fruits in the mix (whether it's pie, cupcakes or cakes, I like my fruits to stay separate from my dessert), but for this sweet waffle, I may have to make an exception. It includes sliced apples, melted Havarti cheese, cinnamon sugar and maple syrup. If I got this waffle, I would probably ask for the maple syrup on the side, but I really am curious to experience the blend of that Havarti cheese, cinnamon sugar and sweet sliced apples. read more

Yeah! 5 stars for sure. It's called off the waffle, for a damn good reason too, it's their specialty and they do it well. Im not giving 5 stars based on atmosphere and all that, but simply because they advertise having some of the best waffles, and they really do. These aren't like any other waffles you can get some where else. These are sweet, almost chewy waffles. First waffles I've ate that require no butter or syrup. I ordered an original liege along with the H-bomb (havarti cheese, slices of apple and cinnamon) my wife had the shmooli ( cheese, pear sauce and crushed walnuts) and the boy had a banana chocolate chip waffle. I took around 15 min to make, which is no problem. The service was great, the guy taking our order high fived michael (our son) and played and made silly faces at our 17 month old baby. It was nice to see them be warm towards kids. The price was good, 2.75 for the original about $5 for the signature waffles. My only complaint would be lack of seating, but on the other hand, we got it to go so we were ok with it all. I have a few go to spots when it comes to food, as for waffles? Great food, had the Trust Us waffles with strawberry etc and it was pretty good. Rest of the family enjoyed theirs as well. Now, the lower rating (rather than a 4 star) is because they're just not geared for the busy times. Today there was a mother's day crowd at breakfast and the wait was about an hour from order time to first bite of deliciousness . They were out of coffee when needed, running out of coffee mugs etc.. I can understand why they would not want to staff up too much as a small restaurant, but they need to find a solution to prepping ahead of time for busy times and staffing up at those times with temps to bus the food, rather than have the cashier run around. I returned to my beloved Off the Waffle yesterday, and if it is possible, I love them even more. I am bewildered by the multiple bad reviews I have read. Maybe it's because I am blinded by how amazingly delicious the waffles are. First of all, I noticed several improvements to the joint since the last time I was there. They have installed booths and a seating area for people waiting for tables. They also have a huge stack of menus and have expanded their menu. And I'm not sure if I was imagining it, but when I received my waffle I swear it was a bigger portion than it used to be. I ordered my favorite, The self fulfilling prophecy (Sunny side up egg, bacon and maple syrup), only this time I added goat cheese - yum! So, so good. Now, to address some of the complaints that I have read - I have always found the service here to be fine. The people working here are friendly enough, bring you your food when it's ready, refill the coffee urn when it is empty. I guess it isn't above and beyond, knock your socks off service, but it's good. Also, the prices - this isn't fast food. These are really high quality ingredients, and you do get what you pay for. The same goes for the charging for maple syrup. As another reviewer pointed out, real maple syrup is expensive. Not only that, but these waffles don't even need syrup. They are quite sweet on their own. They are not your standard dry waffle that you would get at IHOP. Unless your waffle comes with syrup on it already (like several of the combos on the menu do) - just try it without and see what you think. For a truly unique, delicious, high quality liege waffle experience, go to Off the Waffle. If waiting for a table bothers you, go later in the day. I always go around noon and have never had to wait for a table. Also, on a side note, I couldn't disagree more with the people who think Waffle Window in Portland is better. I really like WW, but their ingredients and atmosphere are in no way better than OTW. read more

It's been a little while since I've gone. When I have gone previously, some of the food was a bit expensive. I.e. if you're lower income, don't expect to be able to fill yourself up. This was more of a "treat yourself" sort of experience, something to look forward to after, say, finals week. However, the food was delicious. Really tasty waffles. Not your 'typical' Belgium waffle. Way more crispy and inherently sweet. I would give this place a 5, but more than 1/2 the menu items did not sound appetizing to me, especially under the 'sweet' options. I don't like Nutella or bananas, and the owners apparently do. First off the food and the service here is great, but the restaurant definitely has a hipster vibe and live music. It's great for those who are really into that sort of thing, but if you're looking for a waffle/breakfast place that is quieter and/or more family friendly, this is not the place to go. Also, while the live music is definitely an interesting twist for a breakfast place, the place, in my opinion, is not designed for it. Liège waffles, yeast-based dough, are thick, crispy and sweet -- I like the caramelized texture. Waffles are $3 for the original, no fillings. The various toppings includes chocolate-chip, various berries, nuts and cheeses; which are available for additional cost ranging from $1 - $2. The porch is nice to enjoy your waffles especially on sunny days. The interior is decorated with costumer decorated paper sack (which waffles come in as a to-go street food style) and other abstract canvas paintings. Exterior... it's a house! Supposedly, behind the red curtains starts the "living room"! What I didn't understand was that some orders come out much, much quicker than others. My friends ordered before me and my strawberry-almond filled waffle came out in less than five-minutes and they waited a long, long time for theirs. Oh heck yeah! This is the kind of restaurant I love to eat at! The food is divine. Waffles are crispy and delicious, the bacon is thick and amazing... Just everything we had was salivatingly good. And they have gluten-free waffles!!! We had the self-fulfilling prophecy with eggs and bacon atop a waffle with maple syrup and the Be Brie-peared- scrumptious Brie and Asian pear on a waffle. I added the bacon and never before was bacon so deserving of the extra charge. Just do it, let them take your money. It's worth it. So worth it. Gluten free, vegan, organic, fresh delicious, even have agave and stevia for your coffee or loose leaf tea. Heard a big hoopla about this place and decided to go. Glad I did. The setting was great, although parking in that complex is sometimes a nightmare and parking spots sometimes are scarce. The staff were pleasant and friendly. I had the a Cyclops the Greek and the flavors were good. The taziki sauce was great. However the olives were a bit overpowering for me. But overall it was very good. Couple of downsides here are: 1. The price is a bit much for what you get and to me wasn't filling enough for the price. 2. Ice for water would be nice. 3. My Cyclops the Greek could have used some hot sauce and none was available. Otherwise this place was good! read more

Finally decided to try this place and am so happy I did!!! Everyone says don't even bother trying to go for breakfast on a weekend day and that's mainly the reason I havent wanted to try it. I have been to OTW three times now and all have been around noon on a week day for a late brunch. The waffles are Worth It!!! I can't get away from ordering the Goat in Headlights from the savory section of waffles. My husband had the BVB (I think that's what it's called) and my son always get a custom waffle with strawberries, bananas, and chocolate drizzle. They are all fantastic. Parking is street-only and frequently busy, since the location is right downtown. There was also a line that went right out the door, which often causes my husband to run in the opposite direction. We lucked out on finding a table immediately, although any space between the tables was a pretty tight squeeze. The lighting around the back dining area is super dim, but whatever--that's not a huge deal. I ordered the Goat in the Headlights: chèvre, avocado, fresh basil, two sunny side up eggs with smoked paprika, served on a liège waffle. My husband ordered the special, which came with bananas, chocolate chips, coconut, chocolate sauce and house made almond butter. On the savory waffle, I anticipated a more savory-type waffle, but it was a traditional liège waffle, which was perfectly sweet and crisp. I remember the first time I ate at Off the Waffle. It was in a funky little house on Van Buren Street and was run by two brothers and their dad was there to help, too. While I'm thrilled with their success, I still miss my visits to that little house! These guys deserve all the success they've had. They clearly work hard, take care when hiring staff and know how to keep the quality consistent despite their growth. One thing you won't find at Off the Waffle is attitude. Everyone really is welcome and their staff treat people with respect and friendliness. When your whole business is based on one thing - their Liege waffles - it had better be good. Well, here, it's better than good. The Original, all by itself, is a huge treat. Crisp from the delicious pearl sugar, buttery, soft on the inside... they are delicious. In fact, despite the many options, this remains my absolute favorite. So popular are they with my family, we usually buy a couple of bags of frozen waffles to have on hand for Christmas morning breakfast. Finally, the value. Off the Waffle remains totally affordable. One of my kids' favorite treats is an Off the Waffle. Not only is the price right, but I feel like I'm giving them something of higher quality. Several of my kids also routinely buy each other OTW gift cards for birthdays and holidays. They're among the most popular gifts. I love Off the Waffle. They represent all that's good about Eugene. Our overall dining experience is a 3-star rating largely due to a 40 minute wait for our food with no apologies at all. We saw one table that came in behind us get their food before us. And another table that came in after us get their food within about 10 minutes. The place was maybe half full too. Best waffle I've ever had. They use Liège waffles that are richer and sweeter than Belgian waffles. Chunks of pearl sugar are folded into the dough and melt during the rising process to form a crispy caramelized exterior when baked in the waffle press. We got the self fulfilling prophecy - sunny side up egg (oozing yolk*), bacon, real maple syrup; the H-bomb - sliced apple, with melted havarti cheese lightly dusted with cinnamon and drizzled with maple syrup; and the if else then omelette - three-egg omelet with spinach, bacon, monterey jack and cheddar cheese topped with chopped tomato and basil with a waffle on the side. I've already said that the waffles are amazing, but the bacon is insane too. The bacon is so thick and has a maple taste that just can't be beat. The self fulfilling prophecy had a perfect egg. The H-bomb's apple and havarti went so well with the waffle I couldn't even believe it. The omelette was to die for. The inside was cooked to perfection and the basil on top took it to the next level. If this place wasn't so far away I'd be going there every day. They also have amazing coffee!! This place used to be so good it was mind-blowing. Fresh ingredients and wonderful combinations of things you would never think to try on your own... It's unfortunately changed. Went for lunch at 11:30 thinking it was OK if I had an hour wait, I actually had the day off and wanted to treat myself (usually the lunch crowd is ridiculously long). Went in, there was hardly anyone there. That should've been my first clue. The portion size was about half or less than what it used to be, only got one square of waffle and it didn't cover a quarter of my plate, then when I took my first bite I knew I had been served something that was obviously reheated. It wasn't light, fluffy and perfect like before. I'm wondering if they are serving the same waffles they're selling at the front counter as "to go" now to save time??? Flavor combination was still good, the ingredient toppings were still fresh, but the base waffle was such a disappointment it really detracted from everything else. We paid over $30 dollars for two of us, and received a quarter square of a waffle ea., one egg, one glass of OJ and a coffee. It wasn't worth it. We were still both hungry when we left. What a sad decline of a business I used to love. It may have been a "bad day" for them, I am willing to give it a shot although I'm sure it' will be a long time out... If that was my first experience I certainly wouldn't. Apparently I'm not the only one having a similar experience, IT WAS ALMOST EMPTY BETWEEN 11:30 and 1:00 when it used to be slammed at lunch.... If you aren't familiar with liege waffles, their advice on these is great - try it plain first. I am sure it tastes good with stuff on it, but the beauty of this style of waffle is the depth of flavor. I wonder if toppings mask all that deliciousness.
