My Mom was the one who told me about this place, and it's amazing! Their Liege style of waffles are so good that I couldn't help myself and had to order a second one. The place is nice and funky, with drawings from former customers covering the walls. They even have a joke basket and a barter wall. When I think waffle I think light fluffy and crisp. Today I ate at Off The Waffle I had there regular waffle. The interior is very quaint and quiet like a cafe. It has a warm family friendly atmosphere. The Waffle looks like a croissant almost but it is sweet and a little doughy. I so rarely leave bad reviews, but I was really disappointed with my experience here. We've tried coming a few times, it's never been a favorite of the adults, but our kid likes it so we give it another try every once in awhile. We've had poor experiences a few times before (being closed when they are supposed to be open with no sign on the door or anything, orders wrong, orders taking 20+ minutes when there was only one other table, etc). The only thing I've been able to find to eat was either the strawberries and cream or the fruit plate, but the whipped cream always left me feeling kind of gross. So today I ordered a plain waffle and a side of strawberries. The waffle was so dry and tasted like straight baking soda. Apparently it needs to be drowned in cheese or whipped cream to be palatable. So I went to ask for syrup and was told it would be $1.50 for some! $1.50 for syrup in a waffle shop? So we're done trying with this place. read more

I give this 6 out of 5 stars because Zane's service is mind blowing. I've been to an Off The Waffle every time I make a trip to Eugene. This is my first time at this location. Today is the day before thanksgiving, this place is packed. And there is only one person working today, but that is fine he is superhuman. That person is Zane; he is energetic and friendly and swift. He informed us he is the only person working today. And that wait times will be a little longer. And that it won't be 10 minutes. He was right. It was only 15 minutes, though from the time we placed our order to when we received our food. The food was amazing. His recommendations were spot on. I worked in the food service industry for a dozen or so years. Zane does it right. Zane needs a raise, or a shrine erected in his honor. Waited 25 minutes for a single waffle; there were only 3 other people in the restaurant. Ended up having to ask the cook whom was bringing out the other group's food what the hold up was (the host with glasses wasn't in the front for a solid 15 minutes, I'm assuming she probably was just avoiding me....) and he told me there was no ticket.... Only took a couple minutes for them to bring it out, but the annoyance is still there. The cook was kind and sorry about the whole ordeal, not so sure about the unapologetic host, as she said nothing to us about it... Food was good, although $8.50 for a half waffle is pretty steep. This place keeps getting worse. Didn't you guys pretty recently make a big deal about hiring more staff? I was there on Friday at about 6:30pm with two other people. We came in and the place was completely empty. I thought, "great, it'll be nice and quick!" Three Forks, next door, and Metropol, on the other side, were both full and buzzing. I should have taken the hint. Our order was not complicated. Three waffles, with basically the same toppings: two BMPs (bacon, basil, cheese, syrup) and one Self-Fulfilling Prophesy (egg, bacon, syrup). ** It took OVER 45 minutes. ** Seriously, how does it take 45 minutes to make a waffle and some bacon?? Was she grinding the flour, slaughtering the pig, tapping the maple tree, and gathering the eggs from the hen? No, there was no rush that came in after we did. One couple came in. Even with just one person working it should not have taken nearly so long. One star for the food. The eggs were over-cooked (no runny yolk, as promised) and the basil was almost non-existent. I know that there is fresh basil available right now. What's with the dinky little post-frozen shreds instead of leaves? OTW, it's time to grow up. You're a bigger business now, you need to adjust your practices. Clearly you can't rely only on bartering anymore-- it used to be charming when you were a smaller operation, now it comes across as cheap. These are good waffles, but they are surprisingly small (and surprisingly non-organic) for how expensive they are. In this economy, these high-priced waffles, eaten in the quantity needed to feel that one either had a meal, satisfying snack, or dessert, can only be afforded by people with lots of extra spending money in their pocket, i.e. the upper middle class. This reality doesn't really jibe with the image they try to project that they are "of and for the people." Why should it, when in reality, it is just another capitalist venture with a penchant for marketing gimmicks and a lot of hot air. If the owners wanted to begin to actually BE socially and politically conscious, they might want to consider switching to cage-free eggs and organic dairy products as a starter. And using as many local and organic products as possible. Since they're such big fans of bartering, supposedly, maybe they could make some sort of a deal with one or more of the area's organic farmers, local free-range egg farms, or small and humane dairy farmers. And if the owners made the basic waffle base completely vegan and limited the animal products to just the fillings or toppings, it would help to take much of the cruelty, not to mention the cholesterol, out of their waffles and make the expensive waffles a little more appealing to vegetarians and vegans alike. I'm also disturbed by the comments regarding the mistreatment of employees, which I hope are not true. No. That is my answer if anyone asks me if they should take a trip or vacation detour to visit Off the Waffle. What I liked: -The waffles were pretty good. The topping selection, both savory and sweet was fairly diverse and creative, though not executed in a way that warranted the over the top praise of Eugene press. What I didn't like or was repulsed by: -Location - A ton of tiny tables and cheap chairs in a badly lit square dining room lined with dirty napkin art work located in a strip mall. I actually thought I was in the wrong place. -Cleanliness or lack off: Filthy floor and the absolute worse bathroom I have ever entered into (worse than any porto potty and rest stop-seriously someone was very creative with their disgusting leavings). -Sloooow motion service. So many people lacking jobs these days. . . -And the final annoyance - I was lured here by the website which touts their "bartering board" policy and a waffle video game. Sounds neat, but both the board and game were blocked by many crappy little tables, with people sitting in them. Ummmmmm why are you obscuring the only interesting things about your establishments? When we finally asked a polite diner to move tables, so we could play the waffle themed video game we traveled through Eugene to see - it ate our money. I've heard so many good things about this place and I was so excited to try it out. A friend and I went there for breakfast. I wouldn't recommend it. First off, it was super packed and there was only one person taking orders at the counter. To give her credit, she moved pretty fast for being the only person up there. I ordered the daily special scramble with was goat cheese and kalamata with one of their leige waffles for 8 bucks and a coffee. That's the other bummer about this place, it's $1.50 for a coffee refill. I've never heard of a breakfast joint making people pay for coffee refills, especially for that high of a price. Our scrambles and waffles came and the first thing I noticed was that there was no syrup brought with the waffle. My friend went in to find it and ended up having to pay an extra dollar for syrup on the side...wha...? He ordered it and they said they would bring it to us and it NEVER came. We were done with our food and leaving and it still never came. Ok, so the food. The waffle was really very good, even without the syrup, even though I would have liked syrup. I saw what other people ordered and was wishing I had ordered something different. The sweet waffles looked really amazing. I was surprised at how small they are though. I'm a big eater, especially for breakfast and I would need two waffles to fill me up. At 6 dollars a pop, that's an expensive breakfast. The scramble I ordered was not great. It was very bland and there were THREE kalamata olives in it. I don't think there was any salt at all in it and I was afraid to ask for salt because I thought they might charge me for it. How is a waffle house going to charge EXTRA for SYRUP?! I mean, this is a joke, right? You're a WAFFLE HOUSE. I must say, the young girl at the counter was pleasant, but the same cannot be said for her co-worker busing tables. Off The Waffle, why do you antagonize me so?? First of all, why were you playing some kind of bizarre funeral music? I enjoy good classical music, but really? This? As if the dark, rainy day wasn't depressing enough, I had to spent 20 minutes listening to funeral music. As my previous review states, I would not have come back, but I was next door at Metropol and found myself curious about where they got their hibiscus tea, and whether it's the same as at Metropol (It is! Comes from Mountain Rose, a local place, for which I do commend OTW). Wanting to be fair, I decided to go in, ask them for the company name, and buy a cup of tea in return. Oh how I regret my decision. The girl behind the counter was very friendly, that wasn't the problem, but dear god is she unsuitable for her job. She kept walking to the back for extended periods of time (she wasn't making the food, she was talking to someone there, about orders perhaps) and made no effort to greet the next customer, or say "be right back". So when our turn was up, she walked straight back without acknowledging us, and left us standing there for several minutes waiting to see when/if she'd come back. So then I ordered the tea, and somewhat to my alarm, she rang us up and then proceeded to help the people behind us. Without getting my tea started. But hey, I figured she must have some ultra-efficient plan, right? No, not right. We ended up spending 15 (!) minutes just standing by the cash register, on the side, right in front of her, staring at her, as she helped other customers. Every time a new customer would walk up, they would ask: "Are you in line?" And we would say, right in front of the cash register girl: "No, we've ordered, we're just waiting for our tea." So 15 minutes go by and there's still no sign whatsoever that she's started my tea. Finally, after standing there for ages, repeating "we;re not in line, we're waiting for tea" several times within earshot, I decide to ask her. Her response? "Oh, what are you waiting for again?" "TEA. My TEA." And that's when she finally decided to start making my tea. TL:DR - I waited more than 20 minutes to get tea (and the place had customers but was not full by any means, four or five tables were taken). Oh, and she refused to ice my tea. Despite the fact that I got it iced last time, she said they didn't do that. Nevermind the fact that it's exactly the same process as hot tea, only you throw a few ice cubes in. Such amazing waffles and such horrible service. I'm addicted to these things, but the dirty, sticky conditions of the Willamette street restaurant had my bf refusing to eat there ever again. I had such high hopes for the new downtown location. It looked so clean and new! I even convinced bf to run down and grab some frozen waffles from the new spot so we could have breakfast at home. But after a 25 minute wait at the counter for frozen waffles, he'll never go back to this restaurant either. So amazingly yummy! Like waffle crack! I had one of these waffles at Oregon Country Fair. Let me tell you, I think waffles are the MOST overrated breakfast item of all time. I only bought it because I wanted my toddler to get something in her gut that wasn't ice cream, a sno cone, etc. My god. Hold the phone. This waffle was crunchy and slightly sweet, with the most glorious interior. It was like a yeast donut. Simply amazing. Never been to other OTW locations. Maybe the others are better. We came early Saturday evening. Some customers, but not busy. Usually a great time to try a new restaurant. The feel of the place is...odd. I was pleased that apparently just about all the food is organic and/or local, but that's where the pleasure stopped. There was a sign "be right back -- I'm making waffles" or something to that effect. When the cook/cashier eventually appeared, we ordered a Felony (Mango Sorbetto, coconut, banana, whipped cream, maple, sesame oil $7.50) to split over tea. What eventually came to us was a dry waffle with some sorbet and a lot(!) of whipped cream from a can, with slices of a banana that was so unripe that the peel must have been forest green. The cook had to have noticed this, and served it anyway. The waffle itself was OK, nothing to write home about. So we really just paid $7.50 for a scoop of sorbetto and some whipped cream. Plus $1.50 x 2 for tea, in little mugs. I had planned to do a little online work while I was there, but to add insult to the injury, when I asked about the password for the wifi (ssid: OffTheWaffle), the worker told me that the WiFi is only for his boss, not for customers. This is my favorite place in Eugene. The liege waffles are perfect. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you must drop everything you are doing right now, and go there. Liege waffles are like no waffle you have had before. They further expand the waffles' potential with toppings. The Self Fulfilling Prophecy is my favorite: Eggs, bacon, and maple syrup on top of a waffle. The waffles by themselves do not need syrup. They have that liege waffle caramelized pearl sugar shell around them that is a perfect kiss of sweetness. The dough is made with yeast, so it's like a fresh baked pastry in waffle form. The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 2 is because it is the only waffle restaurant in Eugene and it wasn't bad, so... The good news: Waffle was yummy. I had the fruit one (can't remember the name). Was mildly disappointed to see pears and apples, since that's all that's been in season for weeks and I would have loved some strawberries or mangoes or a more diverse variety of fruits. Whipped cream, delicious. Coffee...pretty good (see below, had to really look for a clean mug... food debris, fingerprints all over the mugs). The not-so-good news: the long line, with no guarantee you and your party will find a place to sit down once you've ordered. I was informed by a 'table cop' patron that I was not to sit down until I had placed my order..I understand the logic because you want to give others a chance to order, but with a larger party, this might cause people to be table-less with hot waffles in hand. Also, the silverware was filthy...I mean seriously, I had to really look for clean forks...I wondered if their dishwasher was broken...really gross. Everything felt grimy...not clean. And my last gripe: No splenda or sugar-free sweeteners for people on sugar restrictions. I thought that was sort of thoughtless. So I've been to this place twice and have had the same thoughts both times I ate there: --How is it possible that Off the Waffle is charging 6 dollars and over for ONE waffle? --How is it possible that a restaurant named Off the Waffle does not serve free syrup with their waffles? That's like selling someone a plane ticket and then charging them extra for the air they breathe during the flight (which I don't doubt will be a reality in the foreseeable future). --How is it possible that the booths to sit in are so cheaply constructed that if the person sitting in the booth behind you is at all heavier than you, as soon as they lean backwards they shove you forward? --How is it possible the employees could be less enthusiastic for your business, or that they could work as slowly as they do, or that they could be as unfriendly and unhelpful as they are? --How is it possible the toppings they've selected for their waffles -- from goat cheese to chocolate chips and ice cream -- could be as unhealthy and nausea inducing as they are? --How it is possible Off the Waffle is still in business? This place was awesome when they first opened. They would actually bake stuff *into* the waffle instead of putting it on top. Then they stopped doing that, because it killed their waffle irons... or something... They never fixed the issue, which I find extremely disappointing. The waffles used to taste better too, somehow. If I could give negative reviews I could. I waited an HOUR for WAFFLES. No one else in the restaurant had their food for the last hour either and all anyone can hear is the staff in the back room laughing, gossiping, cheering, clapping, playing their own loud music, screaming, saying things like "what are you doing?!? Omg!! Hahaha" It was pretty frustrating Should I even have stayed for my food? The waffles pretty were good to be honest. I loved the "in between" savory and sweet waffles. The food here is fantastic. They use quality ingredients in unique combinations and the result is an incredible explosion of flavor. The Goat in Headlights is my favorite waffle (the No Really Though is also very tasty). I took my whole office to the new downtown location last week and everybody raved about it. Unfortunately, the management of the restaurant is lacking. Getting a table on the weekends is a total chore. There is no waitlist and the owners do nothing to make sure people get seated. It really is a fend for yourself system, which means you have to constantly be scoping for an open spot and racing to get a table before someone else. And then when you are sitting there people hover and wait for you to be done. I've actually shared a table with a group once just because I felt bad that they had food but nowhere to sit. The food usually takes a while to be ready, which is surprising because it doesn't seem like it would be too time consuming to make. The owner is also a total jerk to his employees. Peer pressure finally brought me in to Off the Waffle this morning. I've heard so many people raving about this place that it seemed high time to see what all the fuss was about. We came in for breakfast, and there were open tables and no line, which was exciting. However, as other reviewers have noted, the layout is confusing for a first-timer. We weren't sure if we should sit or go to the counter to order. It took a while to find a menu, and I found the menu to be rather confusing. I was looking for something more savory than sweet, but couldn't really find what I wanted on the menu. I ended up with a waffle topped with whipped cream and covered in chocolate. (There was some banana hiding in there someplace.) The waffle was incredibly messy, and my kids ended up covered in chocolate. My breakfast companion asked for syrup, and was informed that it was sold separately, and given a lecture on the inherent sweetness of the waffles by themselves. I agree that the waffles are very sweet by themselves, but there is something less than appealing to me about eating a plain, dry waffle, no matter how sweet the batter. Prices were a bit high, in my opinion, for the size of the plates and the dining experience. Overall: I could be convinced to try this place again, but I think I'd go looking for a treat, rather than a hearty meal. read more

Be prepared for an EXTREMELY long wait for the food, but just bring a good bock, or go with good company and it'll sooo be worth the wait. If you've ever dipped your french fries in your milk shake, or wrapped cantaloupe melon in prosciutto ham, you know the joy that is salty and sweet combined. Off the Waffle takes breakfast to a whole new level with their sweet Liege style waffles covered in savory toppings. I'd never heard of a Liege waffle. With bits of carmalized sugar baked in, they're amazing. If you have a sweet tooth like me, you're in for a treat. My sister took me here during our foodie tour of Eugene and I was thoroughly impressed. She recommended the Goat in Headlights, which tops their deliciously sweet waffle with goat cheese, avocado, fresh basil, and 2 eggs sunny side up, sprinkled with smoked paprika, ground coriander, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. OMG YUM! I also tried the Self Fulfilling Prophecy, which is a decadent breakfast of waffle topped with bacon, eggs, and maple syrup. You can never go wrong with bacon and maple syrup. The breakfasts are fairly small, which is a blessing and a curse. I'd love to eat a huge mountain of this deliciousness, but I also know I shouldn't. From what i understand, the folks here are *really* good at making amazingly awesome waffles, but not so good at the other stuff. There was some confusion around the cash register and a Groupon deal. We were told that there was still some money left over from the deal and were offered an additional plain waffle. We accepted, but they couldn't ring us up. When she finally figured out that the groupon deal doesn't work that way, she actually charged us the $3 for the extra waffle. With some of the great reviews, I was expecting this place to be good. But after two attempts, I am sad to say that this place is awful!! My first visit was in south Eugene: The staff member who help me was very nice, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Goat In Headlights, which sounded good, but my waffle and egg were cold. And the waffle was very stale tasting! Such a tiny and inedible serving of food for $9.50! Not worth it. The seating area was VERY dirty too. I was a bit grossed out. My second (chance) visit was at the downtown location: I waited in line for a long time even though the place was dead. Once I got to the register, the cashier kept interrupting me to talk with the other staff. I asked the cashier if they could make a scrambled egg for my one-year-old. She said "No"...that "they can't make scrambled eggs". Okay, weird, but fine... "how about a plain omelette?" I asked. Then SHE WALKED AWAY FROM ME. Right in the middle of my order! I was still talking. I was so confused and frankly, a bit pissed off. Was she going to ask the "chef" something? Needed to sneeze? Take a break? So, I took my already fussy and hungry toddler to Starbucks next door. read more

I had heard how great this place was and wanted to try it. While the food was tasty and cheap by comparison to other restaurants, I found the experience a little confusing, and the service disappointing. You have to look for the menus, and no one working there offered to help orient us. The person behind the register also disappeared twice while we were trying to figure out what to do, and two other employees kept telling us someone would be right with us. I had the BMB, which was good, but could have used a little more syrup (and if you want more you pay for it). My mom had one with panna cotta and chocolate, but all the chocolate was on the edge of the plate, so her hands were covered with chocolate instead of the waffle. They are definitely saving money by not having to wait on tables and by having you bus your own, but the overall grungy feel and slow service will keep me from coming back a second time. read more

On our long drive up to Portland from LA we spent the night in Grants Pass jsut so we would end up in Eugene to eat at "Off the Waffle". This is all my wife had been talking about the whole drive up and the two days before we left. Not "honey, I am so happy to see you after 8 weeks" no dirty talk, just "I can't wait for waffles". After our less than stellar meal at Pho Sure in GP, we were a little worried. We rolled in around 9:15, figured out the menu and grabbed a table. I don't know if it was the vicodin or not, but the place is tiny. I felt like I was in a hippy doll house. That, is my only complaint. Our waffles were awesome. in fact double awesome. I love these waffles so much I just want to hug all the waffles. Hopefully I can find a reason to get back near Eugene to enjoy more tasty waffles. read more

Love the food. Hate the wait. As amazing as the waffles are, they take for bloody EVER to be served. I'm not going to give it 2 or 3 stars for the slow service, considering the glorious food, but I can't give it 5 stars. EDIT/UPDATE: I feel like it's only fair to say that the wait does not stop me from going, or make the food any less fantastic. You just need to plan ahead. I do know they are making some changes to improve times, and the staff is ALWAYS lovely... I just realized my review might have turned people off in a way I didn't intend. GO. EAT. LOVE. So these waffles aren't bad, but for upwards of $5 or $6 I expected them to be AWESOME. You pay for everything extra, even syrup. The flavor of the waffle is somewhat unique. Almost like caramelized sugar. This is what they pride themselves on -- the uniqueness of their recipe. Lots of creative combinations for toppings. But I have to say that at this price point I would rather make waffles at home. Prob wont go again unless I am with someone that is having a hankering for Off the Waffle. read more
