Ogawa Coffee is a coffee roaster founded in Kyoto. I've been looking forward to visit their Boston location for their matcha latte and hojicha latte. We arrived when they just opened at 9 on a Saturday but the cafe was already half full. After the taste test, I prefer their hojicha over matcha. I will try their coffee next time as this is what they're actually known for. ＊Hojicha Latte $6.75 It is so difficult to find a high-quality hojicha latte in the US. My bf has never had hojicha latte and he described it as a "melted hojicha ice cream". As the tea was roasted, it didn't carry the grassy flavor like matcha. It had an almost cocoa-like deep and intense flavor. ＊Matcha Latte $6.75 The matcha latte was good but didn't really impress me to be honest. Not sure which type of matcha powder did they use. I thought it was ceremonial grade but not the finer or finest one. Just a note that I saw their barista whisked the matcha and hojicha in a paper cup(?). This whisking method was questionable to me, but I didn't find any clumps on the bottom of my lattes so perhaps it was fine. ＊BLTE Sandwich $12.50 ＊Chive & Cheddar Scone $4.50 We tried their breakfast food but it was a miss unfortunately. Stopped by for a quick little afternoon pick me up and enjoyed my hojicha latte! It had really nice roasted notes. Not only did the foam had strong hojicha flavors, but also the latte itself. The drip coffee was also solid. The space itself is pretty cute! Besides the regular tables there was also an area with 3 giant staircases that you can freely sit on with blocks to serve as side tables. Staff were polite and drinks came out at a reasonable time. No issues with the guest wifi. Pastries looked yummy too but didn't get a chance to try. Don't forget to bus your dishes! read more

I've never been to a place that was so busy and quiet at the same time but I loved how chill it was. We had a mocha, a dirty chai, and a Bacon, Egg, and Avocado bagel. Everything was delicious, came out quick, and the staff was friendly. Seating is minimal and all communal so be aware, but it wasn't an issue for us as we found a seat easily as it's a largely transient crowd. This is my wife's favorite matcha spot, and we frequent this place when we both have the day off on the weekdays. The food is great but the drinks are to die for. The matcha is freshly made and poured precisely into your dairy of choice. Just slightly bitter like matcha should taste! The service is order first at the counter and then find a seat. Got the iced matcha latte here and it was great. Very strong matcha flavor and the oatmilk didn't overpower it (which can happen in lattes). The area to place and pick up your order gets really cramped and crowded so it's best to sit on the bleacher seats against the wall to be out the way. read more

Not much to say. The matcha latte was bitter, likely due to low quality matcha. The matcha cake roll was interesting, I appreciate the creativity. The sauce on the plate is art fully executed and the gelatin cubes are made with coffee/espresso. But the ice cream is just hood brand and very average. The pourover was atrocious. Tasted of nothing but roasty coffee. No flavor notes, no fruits, no citrus, no silk finish. Honestly a waste of $9 for a pourover. If I could get my money back I would. Thankfully now I know and I won't come back when I'm looking for a nice cup of coffee. They are better off just serving drip brew and they won't have to spend the time on doing pourover since it has none of the good qualities that come along with it anyways. On my last visit to Boston I needed my caffeine fix before leaving for the airport so I took my partner to Ogawa, where I had my first matcha latte in the city maybe five or six years ago. First impressions- still just as popular as I expected, especially with young people and college students doing work on their laptops. Seating is limited... few tables and the tiered wooden bleacher-like seating which I think they might want to consider redoing. When I sat down after getting my drinks I noticed the whole structure wobbled whenever someone got up, walked up or down the levels. I ordered a lavender latte and my partner got hojicha. We were visiting from San Francisco and were pretty shocked by the high price of our drinks ($8-9) since we can get quality matcha/hojicha lattes back home for less than that, in what we thought would be a more expensive city. I'm chalking this up to there being fewer options for matcha in Boston, and maybe the location. Both drinks were creamy and the perfect warm treat on a chilly day. read more

Delicious drinks, cozy atmosphere, definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately the matcha was out when I visited but the hojicha latte was a great substitute! Smoked maple latte was excellent - I had it both times I visited and didn't want to try anything else. I usually stick with lattes because most flavored lattes are too sweet and lose the taste and aroma of the espresso. The smoked maple is perfectly not sweet. If you have the room, then try the pastries. Almond croissant was flaky and tasty, and again, not too sweet. If you have time, have your coffee there in a mug and sit on the stair seating in the back or along the short bar across from it. read more

I've been here twice now because of my husband's love of the freedom trail! Solid matcha and 4.5 stars for hojicha lattes that I typically don't see on menus! I was genuinely excited to try Ogawa Coffee for the first time, especially given the hype and positive press. Unfortunately, my experience at 9:57 AM on 02/11/2026 left a deeply negative impression. I went in to treat a friend for his birthday. When I ordered a 16 oz hot chai latte, the cashier (listed as Chris on the receipt) stared at me without responding. There was no acknowledgment, confirmation, or engagement. Because she made no effort to communicate, I leaned forward and repeated my order clearly. There was still no reaction. When the drinks came out, my friend received a 12 oz instead of the 16 oz that I had clearly and repeatedly ordered. Beyond receiving the wrong drink, we left feeling othered, dismissed, and unwelcome. What made the situation more uncomfortable was the clear contrast in how other customers were treated. White and Asian patrons immediately before and after us received visible warmth, responsiveness, and clear communication. That level of engagement did not extend to my friend and me. I shared this experience via email immediately after the visit. It has now been a month and five days since I first reached out. The response I received acknowledged that I felt uncomfortable but largely framed the issue as a difference in communication style rather than addressing the observable disparity in treatment or the incorrect drink. While polite, it did not resolve the tangible or emotional impact of the visit. Intent aside, impact matters. A birthday treat turned into an alienating and disappointing experience. This was my first visit, and it will be my last. Best matcha in Boston. Don't come here if you're expecting a super sweet starbucks type matcha, this one is THICC and you definitely taste more matcha than milk. It's actually a popular branch in Japan, and this is the only US location. The downside is it's pretty expensive for the size, it came out to be like $10. Came back again and it was even busier than usual! Although all their tables are usually full, if you stand around for about 10min, you can usually snag a spot somewhere. I always order their ham egg and cheese with sweet chili sauce because it really is the best bagel sandwich I've (probably) ever tried! I constantly crave it due to how light but filling it is, not leaving me feeling too heavy afterwards. I also enjoy their matcha, hojicha, and Vietnamese coffees, all made super well and all being fairly strong drinks! Their matcha especially keeps me awake for a long time, more than others I've tried. Very cute a cozy cafe in the downtown Boston area! It's a Kyoto based coffee chain, and this is the only location in America as far as I know. Can get very crowded, but on a weekday late morning there was still plenty of seating. They only have a few tables, some bar seating, and a three tiered large stair (which has the most availability). Could be more comfortable if they added some cushions. It's pretty bright inside with classical music playing in the background. Matcha latte 9/10: It's definitely on the pricier end but unfortunately I'm starting to get used to $8/9 drinks. I really like their matcha, they make it super creamy and it's sweetened just a little but not too much. To me, it has a strong tea taste without being too bitter or grassy. Avocado toast 7/10: The avocado toast is good, but nothing super special and not worth the price of around $12-13 for something I could make at home. Although that's on me since thats pretty expected anytime you order avocado toast at a cafe or restaurant. It comes with a side salad which is also fine, but the tomatoes were pretty bland. Lastly, maybe the not so good, service: The barista taking my order was just not kind. Hoping it was an off day, but I do believe when you're working in customer service being friendly is a required part of the job. I don't really care at all for small talk but at least a smile would be nice. When I walked up to order I initiated by saying hi, and she did not say hi or smile back. After ordering, all she said was "name?" extremely flatly and then the cost of my items. I'm pretty sure that's all she said to me, even after I said thanks. The good - best matcha in Boston, the coffee is incredible. They spare no expense (money, time) on crafting an incredible latte. The bad - staff are kind of messy. They don't know what's going on and give you the look when you ask for something. Prices are super high (8.50 for a small latte!) and wait times are so long. They don't clarify the default matcha latte is sweetened (?!) and won't remake it for you after you paid 9 bucks. I'll come back because it's the best latte in Boston. After coming back from Japan, I was craving a hojicha latte so I saw that this cafe is literally a branch from Japan!! So I had high expectations that their lattes would taste great. It was a rainy day and surprisingly, the cafe was quite busy around 8:30am. I ordered the following: Avocado Toast: I thought this was ok. Great for a quick breakfast since I came out with an empty stomach. I would rate it 7/10 since it was very basic. Came with a small salad, a spicy mayo on top of avocado and a toasted slice of bread. Definitely will look to try a different dish next time! Warm Hojicha Latte (I wanted that latte art that they're known for): THIS was amazing!! I rate it 10/10! Super creamy and lightly sweet, perfect for my taste. It made me miss Japan a lot so I was glad there was a cafe serving Hojicha latte locally AND with latte art!! Ogawa's actually from Japan and this is the only US location! Got the classic hojicha to go (they do matcha and hojicha best!) and the staff here are also so sweet and funny! We came here this morning for breakfast and drinks. The drinks were good basic chai and coffee. It was nice the cashier asked us what type of milk we wanted. However, the bagel sandwiches were awful. We ordered egg and cheese on wheat everything bagel and They looked good and freshly made, with over hard eggs. But the wheat everything bagel had no flavor and sandwiches were drenched in oil and tasted like oil. There was actually oil dripping off of the sandwich. It was actually the worst bagel sandwich I've had, made me feel sick, and we couldn't even finish half of our sandwiches. For $40 for the two drinks and sandwiches (including tip), I was not impressed. Not sure I would return for food, but the drinks were fine. Pros: The bagels and coffee are both great! The matcha latte, in particular, is quite unique. It happened to be my birthday that day, and a lovely lady made a beautiful latte art for me! They don't do this every time--it completely depends on how busy they are. Cons: There's no parking nearby, making it very inconvenient unless you're willing to spend $30 for nearby parking garage, which is not worth it. I recommend taking Uber or walking. The café is quite small, with lots of customers, making it feel crowded. There's no online ordering--you have to line up to order in person, which can be time-consuming. read more

I want to like this place so bad, I go every other week in hopes that they're just having a bad day, but that isn't the case. There is always a long wait, 25% of the time they forget about my order. When the order comes, its a below average cup of coffee or latte, and charging $7 for a small latte is highway robbery. In the back, there is a large bleacher seating area. In total, I visited Ogawa Coffee twice in the short vacation time. In the first visit, we focused on having an early breakfast and enjoy a hot cup of coffee. There was a line but it went by fast, and there were more guests ordering a cup and head on their way rather than sit. I ordered a cup of latte, the pour-over coffee with one of the coffee blends; we chose the Kyoto blend, and the matcha rose latte (this is a special/seasonal menu). Food, we ordered two bagel sandwiches with different fillings and one egg salad sandwich. When the food or the coffee is ready, a name is called, so I was being careful of listening for it. Once the staff confirmed our sitting location, they brought the food dishes all at once. The drinks were called earlier and these were in different orders. The fastest was the latte, then the matcha rose latte, and finally the house pour-over. This one arrived in a tray with a siphon like pitcher and a beautiful little cup (black with momiji leaves). It was a elegant presentation. The two bagel sandwiches didn't come with a side salad, but the egg salad sandwich did with a dressing poured over in advance. The bagel sandwiches were not toasted, so overall the sandwich texture was soft. Even the egg salad sandwich was lightly or barely toasted, despite the toast marks. I enjoyed the egg salad sandwich flavor, and I also loved how there was a mix of lettuce and tomato for a equal ratio of vegetable and the egg. The pour-over coffee was a delight. Despite it being a purely black coffee, there was no hint of sourness, very easy to drink. It was also an extra nice touch that there were seconds. The latte was delicious as well, more coffee flavor over the milk. The least sparkle was the matcha rose latte. The appearance is very pretty and photogenic, but when I drank it, the rose flavor overwhelm and hid the matcha. On the second visit, the weather was hotter, so we chose cold drinks. I asked for an iced coffee and the iced hojicha latte. I have seen a couple of guests walk out with the hojicha latte, so I decided to give that one a try. My first impression of the iced coffee is that I should have asked for an iced latte. It arrived as a cold coffee with no sugar added, so while it wasn't sour or bitter it was closer to an iced tea. The iced hojicha tea latte was an odd one I'll say. There was a powdery aftertaste on each sip, as though the hojicha wasn't dissolved well. I didn't get much of the tea flavor either. Overall, if I want to visit Ogawa Coffee once more, I'll skip the tea and the cold drinks and choose hot drinks. I'll also explore the lunch menu further. read more

The drink was pretty rich but also bitter so make sure to ask for sweetener. For a place known for their matcha, I was disappointed to find large chunks of matcha at the bottom. Not a coffee person so take this with a grain of salt BUT the hojicha latte here is the best coffee drink I've ever had. Perfectly nutty and roasted, nicely balanced with almond milk (which tends to be polarizing), topped off with some beautiful latte art. If you love coffee drinks, definitely worth a stop if you're in the downtown area. Lots of seating, including the stadium-style seats near the back, but be careful scaling those steps while balancing a hot drink in your hands. The few drawbacks: 1. The specialty coffee drinks are not cheap. My latte came out to about $9. Ouch. Definitely can't do this every day. 2.
