You don't often see a place that makes genuine Vietnamese iced coffees. Talk about labor of love watching the barista make our coffees. Super rich, flavorful and packs a punch. Kudos to the staff for great service and a fun environment. If I'm ever in Kyoto I'll have to add this to my list of places to go to.
Met up our friends here in the morning to grab coffee/matcha before starting the freedom trail and sightseeing in Boston. Cute little Kyoto inspired cafe with huge windows and places to sit inside. It was a hot summer day so didn't opt for any hot drinks to get any cute latte art but we just got iced coffees, hojicha, and matcha lattes. It was good and refreshing to start the day, it was busy and service was great. Hard to find parking in this area as it's busy but there is some street parking if you're lucky. It took about 15 minutes for us to get our drinks.
This was a great popular stop that was on our way to the Freedom Trail. The service was quick despite the long lines, and I love that they take their time to make latte art despite the crowd and while having ordered to go. The drinks were delicious and I asked for extra hot, which was actually hot (this seldom happens at coffee shops). The ambiance is nice and it's a great stop for a morning coffee!
4.5/5 A really good matcha! Definitely on the pricier side coming in at more than $10 with tax and tip. Minus points because I didn't realize it was sweetened when I ordered and wasn't given a choice between sweetened or unsweetened.
I didn't love paying almost $10 for a hojicha latte, but I still have to give Ogawa credit where credit is due - that was one of the better hojicha lattes I've had! Nutty, rich, and just a little sweet, with a smooth taste from start to finish. Can't ask for much better. Like the menu, this location is quirky, with all sorts of seating arrangements, ranging from stadium seating benches to an elevated table near the front window. I opted for a regular stool at a regular table, and I was the odd cafe goer. But seriously, great drinks here, worth a splurge if you're looking for hojicha.
I do like this place. They make great hot drinks, and the food is always good too (pricy, but they are not cheap on the avocado, which is telling!). I went with a weird hojicama (or something like that) drink, and actually did not like it. But the avocado toast was lovely.
This place has been on my list for a while because I've heard many good things, so I was glad to have the opportunity to try one of their drinks. I got the Houjicha latte with oat milk, and although the smallest size was over $10, the flavors were impeccable, earthy and not too sweet at all which is exactly what I was looking for. If it weren't for the cost, I'd be a regular, but it's worth the occasional splurge.
We tried this unique coffee shop from Kyoto, Japan last year and couldn't wait to return! Return we did, making it to the spot 5 minutes before close on the last day of our visit! Last year, I could quickly double park right outside and run it but the logistics changed... This time I parked across the street in a tow away zone. All good! The staff were very gracious in making two lattes for my wonderful wife. I ordered one smoked maple like last year plus a new salted caramel pumpkin! She liked them both! Alicia helped secure the drinks to ensure I could carry them both across the store without spilling a drop! The latte art was exquisite so we got a nice picture before covering the drinks for the journey. Thank you Alicia for your kind, friendly and professional service! We look forward to returning next time we are within an hour or two of Boston! Life is good with excellent unique coffee!
Came here early in the morning for a nice cup of coffee. I am very impressed with their lattes! I got the seasonal speciality - peppermint mocha latte I believe it was called. It was super delicious and smooth. The latte art is so pretty. It was very calm and peaceful in the morning. Not crowded at all. Service was good.
Very cute coffee shop with very nice staff! Interior is very cozy and there is a good amount of space as well! The matcha is definitelyyyyy worth getting and I got the cheddar croissant randomly, but it was SO good (obviously get it warmed!). Also love how they only play jazz or classical music, so if you're a book reader like me, it's perfect ambience noise! Very cute place and will be coming again to try something else from here soon :)
Waited in line for about 15 minutes at Ogawa Coffee, and honestly it was completely worth it. This was the best coffee I've had in a while. I got an iced americano and a hojicha latte, and both were excellent. The americano was smooth, bold, and not bitter at all, but the real surprise was the hojicha latte! The hojicha flavor actually came through, which never happens at most coffee shops. It was toasty, earthy, and so comforting without being overly sweet. If you don't mind a short wait and want really high-quality drinks, this spot is absolutely worth a stop. It's worth the 5 stars.
I got the iced smoked maple latte which was so delicious. It has the perfect balance between sweetness and smokiness. The inside is cutely decorated, perfect for coffee+reading, and staff is kind. Quick service for how busy they were!! I'm just visiting Boston but I would come back the next I'm here.

We came to Boston for a girls' trip filled with food, coffee, and history, and this spot was the perfect start. The vibe gave off a clean, minimal coffee shop feel something I really appreciate and that reminds me of Japanese culture. Service was excellent, and our drinks came out quickly. I tried the Hojicha latte for the first time, and it was fantastic nutty, smooth, not too sweet, and topped with some cute latte art. I also sipped the iced lavender latte, which leaned a bit milky for me, but the lavender aftertaste was spot on. My friends enjoyed the pumpkin and salted caramel lattes, and for food, we shared the salmon bagel and the sriracha bagel sandwich both were delicious and worth ordering. To finish, we had the Hojicha sponge cake with ice cream and coffee jelly, which was the perfect treat to kick off our day in Boston. read more

I ordered a breakfast sandwich with a hot chai latte! The chai latte was perfect for the chilly day, and I loved that they top the latte with cinnamon. The egg was also cooked perfectly in the sandwich. The cafe itself is a smaller space, but there's ample seating with the more informal space they have in the back where the seating looks like large steps. One of the cutest cafe experiences I've ever had... The cafe was truly packed with people but it had a lot of fun seating (communal tables, two-tops and tiered seating!!) and a really gorgeous menu of Japanese lattes, brunch food and sweets/pastries!!!! The hojicha latte had so much body and depth I was almost reminded of black sesame. The latte art was really gorgeous as well. I really liked it! The latte paired incredibly well with the houjicha cake slice, which came with strawberry, coffee jelly, a raspberry syrup and vanilla ice cream. The cake slice was the ideal level of mildly sweet, which was enhanced by all of the added components -- the fruity sweetness of the raspberry syrup, the creaminess of the vanilla, the tartness of the strawberry and the bitterness of the jelly. The matcha here has been consistently recommended to me, and I'm impressed to admit that it was really good! It wasn't too watery, which I feel like is common for iced matcha lattes. The service was also extremely quick, and there was enough open seating on a weekday afternoon for folks to sit and chat, if they wanted to. The only downside is that it was really expensive - after tax, the small 16 oz size was $9.10, which I unfortunately can't justify on a regular basis at all. read more
Ogawa Coffee is a coffee roaster founded in Kyoto. I've been looking forward to visit their Boston location for their matcha latte and hojicha latte. We arrived when they just opened at 9 on a Saturday but the cafe was already half full. After the taste test, I prefer their hojicha over matcha. I will try their coffee next time as this is what they're actually known for. ＊Hojicha Latte $6.75 It is so difficult to find a high-quality hojicha latte in the US. My bf has never had hojicha latte and he described it as a "melted hojicha ice cream". As the tea was roasted, it didn't carry the grassy flavor like matcha. It had an almost cocoa-like deep and intense flavor. ＊Matcha Latte $6.75 The matcha latte was good but didn't really impress me to be honest. Not sure which type of matcha powder did they use. I thought it was ceremonial grade but not the finer or finest one. Just a note that I saw their barista whisked the matcha and hojicha in a paper cup(?). This whisking method was questionable to me, but I didn't find any clumps on the bottom of my lattes so perhaps it was fine. ＊BLTE Sandwich $12.50 ＊Chive & Cheddar Scone $4.50 We tried their breakfast food but it was a miss unfortunately. The BLTE was fresh and delicious, but quite overpriced imo. The chive and cheddar scone tasted bland and stale. I gave up after a few bites. read more
Stopped by for a quick little afternoon pick me up and enjoyed my hojicha latte! It had really nice roasted notes. Not only did the foam had strong hojicha flavors, but also the latte itself. The drip coffee was also solid. The space itself is pretty cute! Besides the regular tables there was also an area with 3 giant staircases that you can freely sit on with blocks to serve as side tables. Staff were polite and drinks came out at a reasonable time. No issues with the guest wifi. Pastries looked yummy too but didn't get a chance to try. Don't forget to bus your dishes! read more

Stopped by on Saturday for a matcha latte. The reasons why I wont be returning: 1) over priced matcha $9.10 2) they forgot my order 3) the drink had matcha chunks which isn't very pleasant while drinking 4) the space can use some tidy up, it was very busy, but a worker can make sure the space is clean. read more
Pretty full and lively when we stopped by around 11am on a Friday. There is some limited seating. There was no line, but it did take a while for the coffee to come out. I got a hazelnut latte with oat milk and this was really good!. The latte art was pretty. I would come back again for another cup of coffee! read more

I've never been to a place that was so busy and quiet at the same time but I loved how chill it was. We had a mocha, a dirty chai, and a Bacon, Egg, and Avocado bagel. Everything was delicious, came out quick, and the staff was friendly. Seating is minimal and all communal so be aware, but it wasn't an issue for us as we found a seat easily as it's a largely transient crowd. I want to come back and try some of the coffee straight up and definitely want another one of those bagels... read more
Got the iced matcha latte here and it was great. Very strong matcha flavor and the oatmilk didn't overpower it (which can happen in lattes). The area to place and pick up your order gets really cramped and crowded so it's best to sit on the bleacher seats against the wall to be out the way. read more

Not much to say. The matcha latte was bitter, likely due to low quality matcha. The matcha cake roll was interesting, I appreciate the creativity. The sauce on the plate is art fully executed and the gelatin cubes are made with coffee/espresso. But the ice cream is just hood brand and very average. The pourover was atrocious. Tasted of nothing but roasty coffee. No flavor notes, no fruits, no citrus, no silk finish. Honestly a waste of $9 for a pourover. If I could get my money back I would. Thankfully now I know and I won't come back when I'm looking for a nice cup of coffee. They are better off just serving drip brew and they won't have to spend the time on doing pourover since it has none of the good qualities that come along with it anyways. Overall, it's a cool cafe, it's a fun little spot but it's over priced, not very high quality food/drink and I would prefer to spend my money elsewhere. read more

On my last visit to Boston I needed my caffeine fix before leaving for the airport so I took my partner to Ogawa, where I had my first matcha latte in the city maybe five or six years ago. First impressions- still just as popular as I expected, especially with young people and college students doing work on their laptops. Seating is limited... few tables and the tiered wooden bleacher-like seating which I think they might want to consider redoing. When I sat down after getting my drinks I noticed the whole structure wobbled whenever someone got up, walked up or down the levels. I ordered a lavender latte and my partner got hojicha. We were visiting from San Francisco and were pretty shocked by the high price of our drinks ($8-9) since we can get quality matcha/hojicha lattes back home for less than that, in what we thought would be a more expensive city. I'm chalking this up to there being fewer options for matcha in Boston, and maybe the location. Both drinks were creamy and the perfect warm treat on a chilly day. read more

Delicious drinks, cozy atmosphere, definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately the matcha was out when I visited but the hojicha latte was a great substitute! I've never had such a rich, decadent hojicha latte before. The place itself is spacious but it does fill up fast. There is a communal table and a big staircase on one of the walls where you can sit on the steps (super common layout in Japan). Service was friendly and drinks didn't take too long to come out. What a lovely and interesting coffee shop! We stopped here for some morning coffee and breakfast, and we were pleasantly surprised by the great service and friendly staff! Our coffee was delicious and such a treat! The bagel sandwich was interesting with a balance of a subtle spice and slight sweetness. Best matcha in Boston. Don't come here if you're expecting a super sweet starbucks type matcha, this one is THICC and you definitely taste more matcha than milk. It's actually a popular branch in Japan, and this is the only US location. The downside is it's pretty expensive for the size, it came out to be like $10. Seating is also scarce because its packed, there was a line when i came in. I'll be back though, other matcha lattes dont taste the same to me after trying it read more
Came back again and it was even busier than usual! Although all their tables are usually full, if you stand around for about 10min, you can usually snag a spot somewhere. I always order their ham egg and cheese with sweet chili sauce because it really is the best bagel sandwich I've (probably) ever tried! I constantly crave it due to how light but filling it is, not leaving me feeling too heavy afterwards. I also enjoy their matcha, hojicha, and Vietnamese coffees, all made super well and all being fairly strong drinks! Their matcha especially keeps me awake for a long time, more than others I've tried. Overall, I love this little cafe and plan to try more of their food and drinks every time I go, they are a great find in the bustling downtown! read more
We came here this morning for breakfast and drinks. The drinks were good basic chai and coffee. It was nice the cashier asked us what type of milk we wanted. However, the bagel sandwiches were awful. We ordered egg and cheese on wheat everything bagel and They looked good and freshly made, with over hard eggs. But the wheat everything bagel had no flavor and sandwiches were drenched in oil and tasted like oil. There was actually oil dripping off of the sandwich. It was actually the worst bagel sandwich I've had, made me feel sick, and we couldn't even finish half of our sandwiches. For $40 for the two drinks and sandwiches (including tip), I was not impressed. Not sure I would return for food, but the drinks were fine. There are large bleachers to sit down and a few small tables throughout. There is also one gender-neutral bathroom. read more

#12 in my NEW ENGLAND & NY COFFEE SHOP SERIES Was super excited to try this place because of the reviews! Plus it's been on my Yelp list for a long time. However, pretty disappointing:( My friends and I would all consider ourselves daily coffee drinkers and we were all disappointed in our vanilla lattes (both iced and hot). The iced vanilla latte tasted really watered down. And the drinks are expensive! There are a lot of communal tables and seats. It's a great place to study if you can do lots of noise and busyness. Very cute a cozy cafe in the downtown Boston area! It's a Kyoto based coffee chain, and this is the only location in America as far as I know. Can get very crowded, but on a weekday late morning there was still plenty of seating. They only have a few tables, some bar seating, and a three tiered large stair (which has the most availability). Could be more comfortable if they added some cushions. It's pretty bright inside with classical music playing in the background. Matcha latte 9/10: It's definitely on the pricier end but unfortunately I'm starting to get used to $8/9 drinks. I really like their matcha, they make it super creamy and it's sweetened just a little but not too much. To me, it has a strong tea taste without being too bitter or grassy. Avocado toast 7/10: The avocado toast is good, but nothing super special and not worth the price of around $12-13 for something I could make at home. Although that's on me since thats pretty expected anytime you order avocado toast at a cafe or restaurant. It comes with a side salad which is also fine, but the tomatoes were pretty bland. Lastly, maybe the not so good, service: The barista taking my order was just not kind. Hoping it was an off day, but I do believe when you're working in customer service being friendly is a required part of the job. I don't really care at all for small talk but at least a smile would be nice. When I walked up to order I initiated by saying hi, and she did not say hi or smile back. After ordering, all she said was "name?" extremely flatly and then the cost of my items. I'm pretty sure that's all she said to me, even after I said thanks. I was thinking of making my review 3 stars based on that interaction, but will give the benefit of the doubt and the other baristas who made my drink and handed me the food did smile plus I do enjoy the matcha so keeping at 4. read more
Ogawa's actually from Japan and this is the only US location! Got the classic hojicha to go (they do matcha and hojicha best!) and the staff here are also so sweet and funny! Got an almond croissant to go with it :) They have a sit down roll cake menu, so I wanna come back next time in Boston! Best variety of seating indoors, and good study space too imo. read more

After coming back from Japan, I was craving a hojicha latte so I saw that this cafe is literally a branch from Japan!! So I had high expectations that their lattes would taste great. It was a rainy day and surprisingly, the cafe was quite busy around 8:30am. I ordered the following: Avocado Toast: I thought this was ok. Great for a quick breakfast since I came out with an empty stomach. I would rate it 7/10 since it was very basic. Came with a small salad, a spicy mayo on top of avocado and a toasted slice of bread. Definitely will look to try a different dish next time! Warm Hojicha Latte (I wanted that latte art that they're known for): THIS was amazing!! I rate it 10/10! Super creamy and lightly sweet, perfect for my taste. It made me miss Japan a lot so I was glad there was a cafe serving Hojicha latte locally AND with latte art!! The art is such a dopamine boost, not all cafes do this either. I'm also usually an iced latte girly, but the warm hojicha latte kept me warm since that day was cold. Definitely recommend this cafe to everyone! read more

My partner and I got a matcha rose latte and iced hojicha latte - TASTE: 4/5 - slightly bitter matcha paired w sweet rose syrup in my latte. The hojicha was satisfying too, though maybe could've used more powder for a stronger taste TEXTURE: 4/5 - the matcha latte was creamy and the rose petals were a nice touch PRICE: 4/5 - subtotal came to $17; the matcha rose latte was pricier at $10 SERVICE: 4/5 - walked in at 2:30pm on a Friday, and the space was mostly full. Got our order less than 10min later ATMOSPHERE: 4/5 - narrow space with lovely, tall ceilings. Pros: The bagels and coffee are both great! The matcha latte, in particular, is quite unique. It happened to be my birthday that day, and a lovely lady made a beautiful latte art for me! They don't do this every time--it completely depends on how busy they are. Cons: There's no parking nearby, making it very inconvenient unless you're willing to spend $30 for nearby parking garage, which is not worth it. I recommend taking Uber or walking. The café is quite small, with lots of customers, making it feel crowded. There's no online ordering--you have to line up to order in person, which can be time-consuming. read more

The cafe is situated in a quaint building with tall windows welcoming guests from the entrance. There are tables of different seating counts inside. In the back, there is a large bleacher seating area. In total, I visited Ogawa Coffee twice in the short vacation time. In the first visit, we focused on having an early breakfast and enjoy a hot cup of coffee. There was a line but it went by fast, and there were more guests ordering a cup and head on their way rather than sit. I ordered a cup of latte, the pour-over coffee with one of the coffee blends; we chose the Kyoto blend, and the matcha rose latte (this is a special/seasonal menu). Food, we ordered two bagel sandwiches with different fillings and one egg salad sandwich. When the food or the coffee is ready, a name is called, so I was being careful of listening for it. Once the staff confirmed our sitting location, they brought the food dishes all at once. The drinks were called earlier and these were in different orders. The fastest was the latte, then the matcha rose latte, and finally the house pour-over. This one arrived in a tray with a siphon like pitcher and a beautiful little cup (black with momiji leaves). It was a elegant presentation. The two bagel sandwiches didn't come with a side salad, but the egg salad sandwich did with a dressing poured over in advance. The bagel sandwiches were not toasted, so overall the sandwich texture was soft. Even the egg salad sandwich was lightly or barely toasted, despite the toast marks. I enjoyed the egg salad sandwich flavor, and I also loved how there was a mix of lettuce and tomato for a equal ratio of vegetable and the egg. The pour-over coffee was a delight. Despite it being a purely black coffee, there was no hint of sourness, very easy to drink. It was also an extra nice touch that there were seconds. The latte was delicious as well, more coffee flavor over the milk. The least sparkle was the matcha rose latte. The appearance is very pretty and photogenic, but when I drank it, the rose flavor overwhelm and hid the matcha. On the second visit, the weather was hotter, so we chose cold drinks. I asked for an iced coffee and the iced hojicha latte. I have seen a couple of guests walk out with the hojicha latte, so I decided to give that one a try. My first impression of the iced coffee is that I should have asked for an iced latte. It arrived as a cold coffee with no sugar added, so while it wasn't sour or bitter it was closer to an iced tea. The iced hojicha tea latte was an odd one I'll say. There was a powdery aftertaste on each sip, as though the hojicha wasn't dissolved well. I didn't get much of the tea flavor either. Overall, if I want to visit Ogawa Coffee once more, I'll skip the tea and the cold drinks and choose hot drinks. I'll also explore the lunch menu further. read more
Super cute spot right in down town, unfortunately parking is always a pain haha. If you have a friend or partner with you we usually just double park with hazards on and the other runs in. They have super cute coffee art but today we. Decided on a couple matcha latte's i def could taste the matcha it was refreshing and flavorful. They are slammed mid day when we went so it took a bit to get the drinks but that just means others enjoy this spot like we do. This is such a good coffee shop to go to if you're looking for a little bit higher quality tea or coffee than some other places in the area. It is a bit pricey at around 8-9 dollars per drink but you do get what you pay for! This place does get really busy with people studying, working or just hanging out. So, if you're looking for a quiet coffee shop this would not be the place to go. read more
Not a coffee person so take this with a grain of salt BUT the hojicha latte here is the best coffee drink I've ever had. Perfectly nutty and roasted, nicely balanced with almond milk (which tends to be polarizing), topped off with some beautiful latte art. If you love coffee drinks, definitely worth a stop if you're in the downtown area. Lots of seating, including the stadium-style seats near the back, but be careful scaling those steps while balancing a hot drink in your hands. The few drawbacks: 1. The specialty coffee drinks are not cheap. My latte came out to about $9. Ouch. Definitely can't do this every day. 2. The drinks do take a while to come out, so maybe not so good if you're in a rush. That said, everything I saw was made with care and attention. The people working here are super nice.
