Recently I stopped in to pick up a few items to bring home for my wedding tasting. I chose a variety of cupcakes along with the Hello Dollies. The Hello Dollies were absolutely delicious those were a definite highlight. Unfortunately, the cupcakes weren't what I was hoping for. I can't pinpoint exactly what was missing, but the flavors just didn't stand out to me the way I expected. I did try to ask a few questions about wedding tastings while I was there, but the worker helping me didn't seem very enthusiastic or willing to offer much guidance. Since this is such an important part of planning my wedding, that part of the experience felt a bit disappointing. Overall, while I was really rooting for this to be "the place" especially since it's a big and popular bakery I don't feel confident moving forward with them for my wedding desserts. This place is dangerous, and by that I mean big back playground. One thing that vexes my spirit is a sweet treat that wasn't worth the caloric intake. Ohlson's is worth it! From the mini cakes, custom cakes, and cupcakes, you can NOT go wrong. My go to is the killer chocolate cupcake. The ambiance is a cross between your grandma's living room and a neighborhood cafe. There's breads, coffees, specialty drinks, cakes, cookies, pastries, and to go cakes. The service ranges from stellar to ok. On average, pretty good. I've never been disappointed with my treats and I'm a bit of a bake good snob as I'm a home baker myself. I had my baby shower this weekend and I sent Eliza some pictures and a description of what I was toying with in my mind for a cake. She'd never seen the movie, Labyrinth, before. My mom touched base with her as well to wrap up details... OMG! The cake was so beautifully decorated. Just enough intricate detail but soft enough for a shower. The flavors were DELICIOUS!!!! Picked up a carrot cake for Easter and expressly asked the clerk if had cream cheese frosting as is usually traditional with carrot cakes. She assured me it did only to find when serving that it was frosted with a sickly sweet buttercream. Hardly anyone ate it, most went in the trash; very disappointing for a $45 cake! Cakes and cookies and pies, oh my! Ohlson's is a quintessential bakery in the northtowns, one that took me way too long to try on my own. My mother got my dad his most recent birthday cake here and picked up a few extra sweet treats for us to try -- and as a major dessert fiend, how could I say no! For his birthday cake, my dad chose the cassata cake, which I found really delicious and light, not overly sweet by any means. I've never had cassata cake before, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I know a good cake when I taste one, and this one was really good. We got an assortment of their specialty cupcakes as well, each were absolutely massive. I chose the wedding cake cupcake and it was very decadent -- way too much frosting for my taste, but the flavor captured that classic almond wedding cake essence. The cake wasn't too dense, thankfully, and I really enjoyed it! If I'm ever in the area, I'll definitely stop by Ohlson's again for a sweet treat. Love stopping here to grab a special treat but recently ordered our first custom cake from here. They blew us away with what we got. Our little girl turned for and wanted a "pink/purple cheetah" cake. Not only did they nail decorating the cake but the inside funfette with custard filling was sooo good. The only negative about this place it that is a little pricey for an everyday treat but it's so good we don't mind for special occasions. I stopped here a week and a half ago to get some sweet treats for myself and my friends for a friend's birthday. The birthday girl needed something gluten free, which this place had. I bought four cupcakes, two cookies, and one gluten-free cupcake. The order was just shy of $40!!! ‍ I was a bit taken aback, when the employee stated my total, but I was okay with it. The treats ended up being delicious and worth it. Because of the price, I can't come here often, but I won't mind returning. They have cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other things. I've always wanted to check this bakery out but never had the chance until this week! It's a small bakery located on the corner of Harris Hill and Sheridan. I came here with my friend after grabbing lunch. I certainly have a second stomach for dessert because I swear all the delicious baked goods and pastries were calling my name! One of my fave treats is a raspberry crumb bar. I knew I had to get the Raspberry Delite Bar. It was really good! The crumble was just perfect and I don't think it was too sweet. I ordered a Elmo cake that Ohlson's Bakery posted on their website as a cake they can make for kids. I specifically asked for the exact elmo cake on their website. Ohlson's quoted me 49.00. I said yes. When we picked up the cake today it was NOT what we ordered. I know some of you may think its not that big of a difference but... I did NOT get what I ordered. The elmo cake I received had buttercream frosting for eyes and his nose... In the image from their website the eyes and nose are made out of fondant and DON'T LOOK SLOPPY! Not my first time - but it's been a long while. Ordered a coconut cream pie for my BFF's birthday cake (and a Kringle too). Without getting to complicated - the customer service was heart warming. Ohlson's is one of the first bakeries I've gone to in Buffalo, and I think they're probably one of the best in town. The inside of the bakery is cozy and everyone that works here is SUPER friendly and helpful. They're really busy during the weekends (brunch line!) and sometimes there's a line even on weekdays. When I go here, I usually go and pick up the pastries or breads I want. I will say, some of the cupcakes are pretty sweet, but generally the pastries and savory breads are on point. I heard they had breakfast sandwiches. So I moseyed on in like Alanis Morrissette on LSD. And they recommended that I get my egg and sausage sandwich on a muffin. They must be fans of Aerosmith vs Run DMC. Because you ain't seen nothing til you're chowing down on a muffin. And sure enough, OMG! I have found my favourite breakfast sandwich in the entirety of the Kingdom of the Commonwealth of the County of Western M*****F******* New York biyatches. The muffin was absolutely delicious and soft and fresh. The sausage was succulent and big and juicy and filled me up completely. It actually hurt going in. I yelped. In pain. I should probably not try to swallow it whole in future. And the egg was delicious too, juicy and wet (mmhmm) and there was more than one egg on there, the eggs were either side of the sausage, so the sausage was completely covered in eggs, this sausage was definitely very lucky to enjoy this 2-on-1 egg action. Easily the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had in WNY. Although another one I tried recently does come close so I will review that later. It just occurred to me, the older folks that go to Ohlson's might read this. And what will they ever think? After all, we all know they are way pervier than younger folks. This is a super cute little bakery and cafe on the border of Clarence, Williamsville and Harris Hill. The employees are super nice and kind, the coffee is strong and the interior is very homey. There are outlets for those that want to get some work done. Fox told me they had the most amazing breakfast sandwiches here, so on a sunny beautiful morning I set out to try them and catch up with my friend. Lo' and behold, although the sandwich was over $5, it was very worth it. I got the egg, cheese and sausage on an English muffin. The bread was toasted perfectly, the egg was freshly cracked and very obviously made to order and the sausage had nice spices in it. It was a pretty large sandwich and you got your choice of what cheese you wanted on it (so they are definitely made to order). I asked for a side of hot sauce with mine, which was perfect! I highly recommend this place. Great coffee, great sandwiches and great people. What else could you want?! read more
