This place (which has moved and expanded over the years) was once easily the best restaurant in Newtown. Now (oddly enough, with so many new eateries opening and in the process of being built), it is just OK. It's always been very noisy inside, with a wait on weekend nights, so often we get takeout. Takeout was never a great deal - the portions have always been smaller than in the restaurant. But the real problem lately is the quality of the ingredients. I don't eat sushi, so I don't know how that is. But the beef they used was high quality back in the day. Now, when we get the Combo Pad Thai (with beef, shrimp, and chicken), the beef is inedible. Pure gristle! They include a small side salad, which is great in the restaurant but unbelievably tiny with takeout. The dressing in the restaurant is the perfect amount. With the takeout salad, they give you the stingiest little amount - not enough. They only fill the container with about a tablespoon of it. Same with the tempura. A tablespoon of the dipping sauce. Which is also much more diluted with water than it used to be. I think they're starting to charge for extra sauce, too. Really?!!! The cost of the sauce is hurting their bottom line? It pains me to write this review. It really does. But I want the old Oishi back. They need to step up their game, or all of the new restaurants in Newtown will be claiming their once-loyal and satisfied customers. read more

I am sure the locals really appreciate that this restaurant is staying open for take out. BUT these guys have to get their act together on the pickup process. Did take out from Oishi last night. there were too many people waiting in the restaurant and not enough distance between everyone. Let's get with the program. Some People, one their own, don't always adhear to the social distancing directive. all Take out restaurants need to consider this when providing their services right now in order to keep all of us safe. Oishi by far has the absolute best Sushi on the planet. I have tried Sushi in many of the finer places in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia and nothing compares to the taste or quality. The owner is one of the sushi chefs and is usually on-site. I highly reccomend Oishi... it's worth the trip. read more

I cannot understand the positive reviews here. Either most people haven't experienced good sushi and Japanese to be able to know a standard to compare what good rolls and traditional appetizers or entrees are or they have no idea what they are missing elsewhere. To say I was extremely disappointed is being kind. If the portion size were small but the food was good I could live with that. But, the portions were extremely small and out of the nine rolls, 3 hot appetizers, two kinds of soup and one hot entree, only the soup was good. I was with five other people. We all felt the same way. Rock shrimp tempura is a staple dish at many places. The shrimp was very low quality, taste was ok and the portion was maybe a half cup. Chicken skewers came four to an order, taste was not good and it was the size of two chicken tenders divided between four skewers. The rolls were below average and small. I'd rather pay a little more and go to Nobu, get portions twice the size and pay 25% more or hit one of the 50% off joints any day. I'll never go back. read more

The Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll is AMAZING! As in, never have I ever had a Spicy Tuna Roll that tasted better. The Cucumber Hand Roll is another favorite of mine. I recommend making a reservation so you don't have to wait. The service is always friendly. No complaints here! read more

I've long been a fan of Oishi to their origins of a much smaller sushi restaurant. I prefer Oishi over their sister restaurant KO. KO is good..and I will write a review on them soon. Oishi is not Sushi Yasuda. Never has been and never will be. That said Oishi is a decent local that does the trick in regards for noshing. They're best products seem to come out on Thursday. Friday and Saturday they seem so busy that they have a hard time keeping quality up. The rest of the week they are slower and thus the product declines in quality. Thursday somehow seems to be the best of days for this restaurant. My thing there is sushi. That's what I get the most. I get the steam vegetables with peanut sauce as a side rather often as well. The Dynamite Alaska is my favorite cooked sushi roll. The salads are pretty good and different than your usual salads. I think it would be unfair to try to compare them against a place like Sushi Yasuda. Morimotos should be compared against Sushi Yasuda..but not Oishi. Oishi is just a suburban local that produces sushi better than the grocery store variety; I think they are probably the second best in Newtown. The best sushi producing spot is oddly from the Farmers Market. It is absurd I know. All this said it's a decent enough spot that I keep coming back. Recommendations; would be kind of cool if they'd tried to get some uni in. Maybe sport delivery or push that on their sister restaurant. Later hours would be decent as well. read more

After hearing people rave about this place decided to finally give it a try. Everything about this place was great. The interior is well decorated and clean. Servers were attentive and kind. This is seriously my favorite sushi place ever. The décor is amazing and the staff is very friendly. They're a little pricey for dinner, but definitely worth it and they're BYOB. This would be a 5 star, but due to service, I had to deduct points. When we arrived, they told us it was a 15-20 minute wait. They were pretty true to their word. Once the waitress came over we ordered drinks. A few minutes later she came back with the salads we ordered and wine glasses, but no tea.The waitress takes our order right then and there. I asked her about my tea for the second time,no answer. Finally, my dad interjected. She answered him, and after she took the order, she came back with the wrong tea. It was okay though because I liked the tea she brought us. She was not friendly, and took our food away from us before we were finished. She also brought my dish 5-10 minutes after the rest of the table..... I was not impressed. As for the food, the sushi is amazing!!!Dad ordered the chicken,beef and shrimp pad tai.It was amazing. My only critique might be that the dish wasn't spicy as anticipated. My mom ordered the chicken bulgolgi, it was fabulous. I decided to try the bento box with teryaki salmon, veggie tempura and avocado with miso.It was great!! A keeper dish. The avocado was the best part. Highly reccomended. Food was good, service was not so good. Place was empty when we walked in when they opened for dinner service. We called ahead to make reservations and good thing we did because the place filled up around 5:45. Waitress took order and appetizers came out very promptly. Rolls and main course was a different story. There was about 45 minute wait between the time they took away empty appetizers plates and the time the main courses and rolls were brought to our table. It seemed that no one from management was on the floor checking on things and relaying the information to sushi chefs and kitchen. The waitresses did not seem very professional and were running around unsupervised. It's a shame because the food was good. It is also BYOB. read more

Want to love this place but sadly I don't. Terrible service (Tues nite, half full), 4 small sashimi pieces to a Chef Sae special (which the server told me was sushi but it was sashimi - I left hungry) :( Better Korean in central Jersey and Fairless Hills, PA. Would rather have driven 30 mins to Chalfont for that Korean buffet with selection if 10+sushi! Ordered the Chicken Satay - the chicken pieces were so tiny, the skewers were half size. Ordered the tofu/veg udon - again, small portion. But the broth was very good. The Chef Sae special #2 (tuna, salmon, yellowtail) wrapped in vinegar radish - was fresh (thus the 2 stars) but no rice which makes it sashimi. And it was 4 small pieces. The server smiled broadly but we had to seek her out and go back to the wait station for her twice, she "forgot" one of our orders saying the kitchen was backed up but obviously she had forgotten to put in the order. Bottom line - I find their slow service, their small portions for fairly high prices does warrant any more than 2 stars... read more

i live in newtown, so i've been here many times. the food does not disappoint. i love sushi, and this place definitely does it well. i love the korean flavors they use. spicy crunchy tuna roll is a staple, and the cucumber hand roll is delicious, but a bit steep ($8 each) they have a lot of non-sushi items too, and the things i've tried have always been good. make reservations because this place is usually very busy. read more

This restaurant is a jack of all Asian cuisine and master of none. Additionally, the service left tons to be desired. The only explanation for this restaurant's popularity and good reviews is that Newtown is a captive audience and apparently the residence haven't experienced good Asian food. Seriously, cooked chicken and sweet potato in a sushi roll? Coming from Los Angeles and SF, I have experienced some of the best Sushi, Thai and Korean restaurants in the country. I wasn't expecting this restaurant to hold a candle, but wasn't expecting it to be as bad as it was. My feedback for improvement is as follows: 1. When your guest has a reservation and you are running behind, apologize and tell your guest approximately how long it will be until the table is ready. 2. Have a separate area designated for to go orders. Wading through teenagers in work out clothes and other to go patrons to check in made me feel like I was in a cheap Chinese take out dive. 3. When collecting the guests to take them to their table, don't gesture to them from across room through all of the people waiting for their take out orders. 4. Teach your wait staff the menu. 6. Get a liqueur license. Sushi without sake is a sin. 7. Offer your BYOB patrons glasses and bottle openers. 8. Ensure glasses are clean. 9. Create spicy dishes without the use of sriracha sauce. 10. Work on your ginger salad dressing. It has the consistency of paste and needs salt. The one redeeming quality was that my salmon sushi wasn't horrible. read more

Whoa, I can't believe I didn't review this place yet. I was introduced to it by a friend about 7 years ago. Mind you, we live in S Jersey so it's like a 45 min drive. So as a much needed mom's night out, we went 7 years ago and I was no longer a crunchy cucumber hand roll virgin. Best experience ever. It's spicy tuna with a korean flare... with a nice crunch and wrapped in a sweet pickled something (radish?) although as I'm typing this, I'm not sure where the cucumbers come in... so maybe it's wrapped in cucumber. Anyway, I digress... I love that roll and honestly think of it often. Their speciality rolls are all good. I also love their rock shrimp. We went back last weekend and I was shocked at how busy this place was at 830pm in Newtown. It didn't FEEL like we were in Newtown because the place was happening with a lot of people waiting. A reservation is a must but it's also a given that if you go on a weekend evening, you'll still have a wait a bit with the reservation. A nice Asian fusion restaurant in the burbs mainly consisting of Thai, Korean, and Japanese food. The Oishi Gopdol is awesome. Its a sizzling bowl of rice, veggies, a fried egg, and either seafood, chicken, or beef. I have had the seafood and chicken and they are both great. Also comes with sriracha sauce which spices up the meal. I wouldn't recommend the ht and sour soup as it was more Thai lemongrass then what I consider traditional hot and sour soup. read more

Got the pretty good lunch deal with different rolls, which were okay but not authentic. The thing that really disturbed me was that in one of the spicy rolls, they added Sriracha chili sauce, which made the whole thing soggy. I guess I should have expected that since they bill themselves as a Japanese-Thai-Korean restaurant. And I was a bit perturbed by the fact that they charged for the tea, which did come in a nice pot they left at the table, but wasn't even anything beyond ordinary tea. What kind of place serving Asian cuisine charges for tea? I guess this could pass off if you were desperate for sushi, but I'm not going to go out of my way to come back here. read more

This is honestly my all time favorite sushi restaurant. Their spicy tuna and spicy salmon hand rolls wrapped in cucumber are beyond incredible and the sushi rolls made with the Oishi spicy sauce and crunch are to die for. I live in New York City and I wish we had a place like this here. If I drove, I would DRIVE here to get my sushi fix. Came here in on a Friday night and it was completely packed. Really good atmosphere and its a BYOB. We really enjoyed the Korean Pot (gopdol) with vegetables, rice and beef along with the sashimi platter. Ive has sushi here in the past and I didnt think that it was the best. Im not a fan of anything tempura (fancy word for deep fried) and they had way too many of those options. I've been a loyal customer at Oishi for years, but they have really gone downhill in the past year. Took a friend there for lunch recently. Service was inattentive, despite the restaurant not being all that busy. I ordered the "New Age Roll" for $16, and what showed up was about a half a roll, cut into four small pieces. I should have sent it back, because the smell was off. Spent the rest of the afternoon paying for it, with a bellyache. Oishi is now off my list. read more
