This place is very difficult to get into during happy hour times, and hard to get on the phone. It's best to just show up early and wait for a table. Parking is limited and difficult, but that was the least of the issues. The prices are very affordable, but unfortunately the quality matches the price. I ordered the sushi platter (over 20 pieces) and the agedashi tofu. The tofu had decent flavor and came out hot and freshly fried, but the heavy coating left a chalky, dry taste on my tongue that was hard to get past. The sushi platter was very disappointing. The rice was cold, gummy, and overwhelming compared to the fish. The fish itself tasted gummy, mushy, and not fresh, with some pieces giving off that unpleasant "fishy" flavor. To make matters worse, I ended up with diarrhea afterward, which sealed the experience for me. The one positive was the service. The staff were kind, attentive, and welcoming. Getting the seat closest to the kitchen, I was able to observe how the staff worked together like a well oiled machine and I appreciated that. I started off with the agedashi tofu since the menu was big and I needed some time to figure out my choices. Being close to the kitchen didn't help because I wanted everything that passed by me! I ended up with the Calamari, and three rolls, rock'n roll, smoked salmon, and the Houston maki (recommended by the server). The tofu was fried perfectly into little bites with dancing bonito flakes and the calamari you could tell was fresh, the tempura batter some of the tastiest I've had in Houston. I realized I had ordered too much when my rolls arrived but I made an honest effort to finish as much as I could. My favorite was the Houston roll which was tempura fried, and my least favorite was the smoked salmon but all very tasty and fresh. You really can't beat the prices here especially for the quality of food. This last time I dined here for dinner and got the miso soup, yellow tail roll, and RM Roll. All of it was fresh and delicious. The RM roll pieces are large so a bit challenging to eat. It's a shrimp tempura and avocado roll topped with salmon, chopped scallops and habanero masago. We were able to place our orders before getting seated, so they could start working on our orders which saved time. Although it still took 15 minutes to get out our sushi order after we were seated. Overall, it's good value. The beef don was surprisingly large for the $8.50. The sushi pieces were around $1.50-2.50 aside from Toro, Otoro, chutoro, uni. It's not the freshest sushi and the rice is too mushy/sticky. But it will satisfy your craving for sushi for a low price. The parking is pretty limited. read more

This was the second time we tried Oishii. The first time, we got delivery and did not like the quality of the the fish and found the rice to be dry/crunchy and it had this strange sweet taste to it. We decided to give it another try, figuring that maybe they were having an off night and maybe we would have a better experience at the restaurant itself. We went there for lunch on a weekday. First thing you should know is that parking is very limited, and many of the spots in the lot out front are reserved for other retailers. We went during the lunch rush, so it was pretty packed but they managed to find us a seat immediately, which I appreciated. The food took a while to come out, but again it was crowded so I don't blame the restaurant for that and I'm sure they were trying their best. We ordered off the lunch special menu that had several dishes including udon soup, teriyaki entrees, tempura and sushi specials. Each special came with a choice of miso soup or salad with ginger dressing and most dishes were under $20. The shrimp tempura lunch special came with 4 pieces of shrimp tempura and 4 pieces of vegetable tempura with a bowl of white rice. It was fine, nothing special. It came out hot but was kind of small so if you're hungry, it's really not enough food for lunch and was more like an appetizer. We also tried 9 piece nigiri lunch special. Honestly, it was terrible. The rice had that same sweet taste that I remembered from when we ordered delivery. The fish was very thin and bad quality, with a few pieces that tasted sour. I couldn't finish it because it was so bad. The restaurant itself is also not that clean and it's insanely loud during the lunch rush. All in all, I would never come back here. There are so many great sushi spots in Houston, and yes most of these places are more expensive than Oishii, but the quality of their dishes is so much higher that it's worth it to me. I understand the appeal of cheap sushi, but you're better off getting grocery store sushi than getting sushi at Oishii. Even though their dishes were inexpensive, I feel like I wasted money and time trying this place out again because it was so bad. Next time I'm craving sushi for lunch, I'm going to HEB. Although there seemed to be plenty of staff standing around, it took 30 minutes to take our order and about that long to get our check. The food itself didn't take too long. Maybe they were going through some things. The happy hour menu is reasonable - the prices really can't be beat. But the quality of the food reflects it. Since it is a value place, the sushi isn't the best quality but some of the cuts were pretty good. They don't skimp on the slices either. If you go during happy hour, they have discounts on drinks as well as bogo appetizers for $5. We got 2 spicy salmon rolls, edamame, and a kani salad. The spicy salmon roll was pretty solid, the edamame is actually a lot, and the kani salad was decent but it was really small. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement. So called "regulars" were offered special treatment including the ability to disregard the liquor license law and take alcohol off the premises of the restaurant. Our server did not even do the absolute bare minimum and we did not receive plates with our appetizer. Our server was short and impolite however, her attitude pivoted an absolute 180 with the "regulars" seated adjacent to us. They received plates and fast and friendly service. Oh, and they were doing soju shots with the waitress on the side as we were waiting for the check and for our piled up plates to be cleared. My mother who was accompanying me on this business trip brought her complaints up with the employee at the front of the restaurant before making our exit. When confronted with this information, he laughed as if it was not a legitimate complaint. Nevertheless, I believe my 38 cent tip was loud enough to voice my displeasure aside from this lengthy review. Parking is tight; I was barely able to secure a spot in front of the restaurant which is a small, shared lot, but was told later that the lot next door is also for Oishii. During happy hour, they have discounted drinks and BOGO appetizers which include some sushi rolls like salmon roll, dynamite, and cucumber avocado. We also enjoyed $4.50 hot sake. For our entrees, we split some sushi rolls and sashimi. I especially enjoyed the James roll (shrimp, avocado, real crab, Japanese mayo) and the unagi sashimi.
