I tried Soto's $25 HRW menu and really enjoyed it! The interior is modern, elegant, and intimate. The Brussels sprouts were crispy with a sweet yuzu soy flavor, although the goat cheese is strong if you're not a fan. The Kaiseki Bento was beautifully presented with thick cuts of sashimi. My favorites were the delicate olive flounder with truffle, Japanese white salmon, and crispy rock shrimp tempura. The lychee mocktail was refreshing with a nice sweet-and-sour balance. Great service, beautiful presentation, and very skilled chefs!

I went during Houston restaurant week for dinner ($55) I tried two 3 course meals. For the first course I tried the chili hamachi it had a spice to it and the ponzu sauce gave it a zesty flavor. The other one I tried was the medai dai and the mandarin oranges on top of it gave it a tangy flavor. For the second course I tried the sashimi. The king salmon was my favorite. The texture of it was buttery smooth and melted in my mouth. The sashimi also had medium fatty tuna and yellow tail. The third course I tried the mango maki which if you like mango or fruits in your sushi you will enjoy this. However, for me it does taste a bit weird when you mix in sweet and savory. The mango did taste refreshing. The Negi toro maki was a nice bite sized sushi roll. I actually preferred that one over the mango maki. The last courses I tried the beer cheeecake which reminded me of the flavoring from the top of the flan cake and coconut flavors. The other dessert was mango cheesecake and the mango tasted fresh. I tried two rolls that were not apart of the restaurant week special. The first roll I tried was the hamachi apple and the flavors would've been fine if the apple wasn't in there. The apples did give it a good crunch but the tartness from the apples I feel like did not mesh well with the rest of the roll. The second roll I tried was the white tiger with Yuki kombu. It had a thin wrapping on the outside and the inside reminded me of a spring roll except with tuna. The tobiko popped and gave it a little salty flavor to it. The atmosphere of the place was fine. It has a sushi bar, a drinking bar, and other small table around. You could tell the server was familiar with the menu and was knowledgeable on the dishes.

One of the best happy hours in Houston? Probably! The chef's choice 5 piece nigiri is outstanding. Each piece was a delight, with each nigiri bringing a new flavor. Really well crafted and inspired sushi, which isn't normally what you get during happy hour. My favorite piece was the salmon cheek nigiri topped with caviar and gold flakes. Made me feel like I was celebrating my birthday. We ordered 3 rounds of the chef's choice and were stuffed. 10/10, bring ya bae.

Great sushi spot. Been here twice in two weeks. Their rolls are amazing!!! Please get the mushroom risotto!! The service was great, explanations on anything you ask for! Great for date nights or chill girl dinners. Reservations maybe needed on weekends. Valet parking and free street parking available.

10/10 Experience -- We'll Definitely Be Back! We had such an amazing experience at Soto Houston! We sat at the bar, and Andre truly made our night. He was extremely helpful with his recommendations, and everything he suggested was absolutely on point and delicious. What impressed us even more was the level of service. Andre was attentive throughout the entire evening and took the time to explain every dish as it came out, which made the experience that much better. And somehow, he managed to do all of this while being the only bartender handling the entire restaurant on a busy Saturday night! You would never have known it from the service we received. The food was incredible, the service was exceptional, and Andre really made the experience memorable. 10/10 all around. We will absolutely be coming back!

5/5, had a great experience at Soto! Came in for the Houston Restaurant Week (HRW) lunch and had the Sunomono, 5-piece special nigiri, and Yellowtail maki. Pros: - Fresh, high-quality sushi - Excellent natural flavor of the fish and ingredients - Didn't rely on additional sauces - Friendly staff Cons: - Small parking lot with tight spaces - Only one bathroom stall That said, the cons were just minor details and not a big deal at all. Extremely satisfied!

Everything about this place is well executed, from the valet in to the last bite of sushi. I highly recommend the seared salmon roll, as well as any of the nigiri. We had a tuna flight, a salmon flight, and an assorted fish nigiri flight, all of which were amazing. We also tried multiple vegetarian rolls, which were tasty and thoughtful. Extra props to these folks for having a vegetarian menu with lots of options. The service as excellent, utilizing a team bussing strategy while having a single server taking orders. The ambiance was also lovely, the high ceilings make this place feel extremely spacious despite it being a relatively small space. Highly recommend coming here.

Soto has been on my list to try ever since I never got to try the original location in Austin. It has insanely good value with their daily happy hour menu from 5-6:30 pm. The ambiance is really nice with high ceilings and table lamps where you can change the setting with a tap (not on every table tho). Service is very attentive and quick in that your dirty dishes are cleared from the table instantly and your water is constantly filled but I personally don't feel like we saw a lot of our original waiter except to take the order and bring us the check. - We absolutely loved the chicken karaage - was perfectly fried on the outside and still so tender on the inside, and comes with a nice fish sauce dip. - The presentation of the soft shell crab tempura was gorgeous, it was perfectly crisp, and had a fried egg on top which really elevated it. - The meat on the hamachi kama was very tender and plentiful with some charred bits that were packed with flavor. This was one of my boyfriend's favorites. - The temaki handroll was entirely filled with the stuffing (we tried both the spicy salmon and the spicy toro) which is really rare and a nice surprise because usually at the bottom of the handroll is just rice. - Mini sushi tacos were a nice surprise - I really enjoyed the texture of the crispy nori shells and they did not skimp on the fillings. - All of the fish is extremely fresh and paired well with whatever sauce and finishings that come with it. The chili hamachi, madai crudo, salmon tiradito, and tuna w/ truffle are all stellar. The chef's choice includes 5 pieces of nigiri and we were given the tip to order it at different times throughout the meal because the second round will have 5 different types of fish than the first one. - I think the only disappointing dish was the pari hama maki - while we appreciated and were surprised by the starve size of the maki rolls, whatever greens were put inside overpowered the taste of the yellowtail. Really just tasted like a salad. Soto has easily become one of my favorite restaurants in Houston from just my first dining experience alone (I've been twice now since originally drafting this post) because you really cannot beat the value of their HH and the quality of the food. I've bragged about it to several people and will bring the rest of my family next. :)

My husband and I had such an amazing dinner experience at Soto to celebrate his birthday. The vibes are very intimate/romantic and dimly lit. They have a very small parking lot but valet is complimentary. Our waiter Alex was very friendly, funny, and knowledgeable when it comes to sake and Japanese cuisine. He made our visit there such a memorable experience. We decided to splurge on the premium omakase and it was SO worth it. Food presentation was beautiful and the food was fresh and delicious. There were so many dishes I can't even pick a favorite. We were so full by the end of dinner. We will definitely be coming back with our family and friends.

    Lunch special - nigiri

My absolute favorite sushi spot in Houston, and we also love the Austin location. I usually come for the lunch special, which is around $25-$28 and includes soup, salad, five piece nigiri, and maki. The restaurant is clean and inviting, with convenient parking along the side of the building. I always see the head chef working at the bar and creating beautifully presented dishes. It's easy to see why Soto earned a spot in the Houston Chronicle's top 100. The only thing to note is that during our last visit we asked for still water and were charged $9 for a glass bottle. I wasn't expecting that, and it would be nice if it were disclosed upfront. Nonetheless, I'll keep coming back. The staff is also incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and attentive. Highly recommend!

Absolutely phenomenal. I ended up going twice this week. I had to run it back. Everything was delicious! My absolute favorite was the smoked sake on the main menu. It comes in a box. (Not the presmoked salmon) it's to die for. The Masu, Sake & Chutoro were also delicious. I like soy sauce but this sushi is flavored so well, it can be a disservice.

Upon arrival, I was told that I could not sit at the sushi bar and eat. If I wanted to order I had to go sit in the common area of this dining hall. After this discussion, I said fine and asked for a menu. They then told me I had to get up and order at the register and view the menu glued to the counter. They took the order of a couple who sat down maybe 2 minutes before me in front of me. I will never come back to this place. They seem to be the last man standing in this dining hall, and with this kind of customer service, they won't last much longer. It's a shame because I love the food and I am a regular at handies and aiko as well. Won't be back to any of them.

The restaurant itself was pretty packed - there wasn't any parking (but they do have an overflow lot you can use). Inside the vibe was nice & upscale. It was surprisingly not intimate & was a little loud. The bathroom hallway was very cool (as the other reviews have said) I got the three course lunch w/ an added chutoro nigiri. The restaurant week lunch was fine, but the nigiri really stood out. I wish they would've had even just one nigiri on the restaurant week menu. The kombu salad was good & had nice flavor without being too overpowering. The hamachi crudo was awesome!! I'm a big crudo fan, but this one was above and beyond my expectations. All of the flavors played so well together & my yellowtail was so fresh and light and buttery. I loved the creaminess of the sauce & how it balanced the acidity of the tomatoes & onion so well. I savored every bite. Honestly the hand rolls left a lot to be desired. The kani hand role wasn't super great. The flavor was mid & the texture felt a bit off. I also thought sake hand roll was just ok.. My chutoro nigiri was also awesome. The cut was beautiful & the fish was super fresh and had an awesome texture. It just melted in my mouth. I'll definitely be back to try the lunch nigiri tasting menu. I'd recommend trying this place, just make sure to get the crudo or nigiri

GENERALIZED REVIEW:…read more Came here with a friend from theatre after a full run--he had this place recommended to him by another theatre friend, so we're just passing on the word. The plaza was a bit confusing to navigate, and I'm pretty sure if the place weren't full of Asian parents and their kids, it would've felt like the shadiest place ever because you have to enter from the back. Otherwise, the plaza had a lot of great-looking stores overall. My first go-to: I've loved drinking Kirin Light ever since I discovered it in Chicago. The flavor is literally so light, with a slight acidity that brightens up my meal. The sake here was frankly also delicious. I didn't order it, but my friend did, and they had it warmed. The flavor was soothing and subtle, almost like tea. It was exceptionally easy to drink, and the ocean-themed ceramicware was a beautiful touch. We ordered two rolls: the Shaggy Dog and the Truffalufagus (a fun tongue-twister). I personally chose the Truffalufagus (which is not fun to spell) because it seemed like the most unique dish on the menu, and I enjoyed it very much. What I liked most about it was that it was subtle yet impactful. I also loved the textures--from the internal crunch paired with the fresh jalapeño to the softness of the fish. I'm glad I gave this roll a shot, and I would be excited to try it again anytime. The Shaggy Dog was great, but it appealed less to my flavor profile. It was a little too rich and creamy for me. I recommended this place to my BF as a potential future date spot--I personally think he would like it... if he weren't the type to enjoy AYCE sushi so much. If they had more unique rolls, I would definitely come back just for those. I was tempted to order the Surf and Turf for this round, but I didn't want to seem like a glutton, hahaha.
