This company deserves way more than 5 stars. Let's be honest: I'm a clueless girl who doesn't know her way around a lumber yard. I walked in to OK lumber company with a DIY project in mind and the store associate walked me though the yard and showed me all the options explaining the difference. Once we figured out I needed a small cut, he directed me to the scraps and found me a perfect piece. They cut it to the exact size I needed and charged me basically pennies for it. How have I missed this place? So close to Home Depot but worlds apart. They stock everything, and I mean everything. Huge yard, good prices, friendly service. Check hours as they close at 4. Quality products. I had to match an exterior panel, they were the only folks in Bay Area that had it. Also note they do not do custom cutting. I would give 100 stars if possible. I had a DIY project this long weekend to shorten the legs on a coffee table. Tried it with a saw we had in the garage, did not work out. On a whim I drove in to OK lumber and was hoping for find someone who I could hire to cut the legs down. Frank came right up to me to ask about my doggie, Dandy. He then took my wooden legs from the table and cut them right then and there. The nicest man on the planet. He would not take any money. I am so grateful and can't wait to go back. We needed redwood to build raised garden beds for my son's middle school, and the guys we worked with at OK lumber went out of their way to help us out. Because it was for the kids and the school had a very limited budget, they worked with us to give us a great price that made it possible to get all the wood we needed. Visiting Home Depot is good for the male soul. Go in, browse, choose the stuff you think you need, bring most of it back later. Nobody looking down on you or making you feel anything but the near professional contractor you know you are. Lumber yards are different. They know you are an ignoramus as soon as you walk in the door and often seem to sneer at that ignorance. They're intimidating! But OK Lumber is different - REALLY friendly people will give you the advice you need without making you feel small and help you to buy what you need for your project. He shows me a pile of strips that had been shaved off of larger pieces before they were sold. "Perfect", I said. "Take whatever you need". Great service still exists! I had the fortunate experience of working with Alberto who is mentioned in other reviews here. The service provided by him was absolutely incredible. I decided to build a small raised deck for our dog, not a large project at all, about 2' by 2' about a foot off the ground with a ramp so definitely not a large revenue job for them but he went way beyond what I expected. I had sketched a picture of the project and he took the time to go over the best type of wood, the dimensions of each piece and the total amount of lumber needed. We then proceeded to the lumberyard area to look at a couple of types of wood at various price points and the differences in quality. Once I picked the wood, we went back to the sales office to detail the exact cost and he also helped me pick out the right screws for the job. On top of that Alberto even cut the wood to the specifications I needed - saved me some work and sawdust at home. I'm just a regular DIY guy, no contractors license but he gave us a small discount anyways. I must say I cannot recall a better experience anywhere in recent memory. Alberto spent about 30 mins. in all with me for a small project that costed $69 - still can't believe he spent all that time with me - TOO GOOD! read more

If I could give 2.5 stars, I would, but rounding up to 3 in the spirit of generosity or perhaps I caught them on a bad day? My project: 5 raised Redwood garden beds. Dimensions: (3@ 8'x31") (2@ 4'x4') Cost: ~$1150 in wood from okay lumber I didn't know that much about quality, so I googled how Redwood is rated. I assumed that the high cost was then for a better grade of wood. Compared to the basic redwood of the same dimensions at Lowe's, for example, the cost was ~2-3x higher. I arranged to have the wood delivered and assumed that I would receive uniform high quality boards. Unfortunately, the quality was extremely varied, up to the point of the basic dimensions not even being met. (Some of the 2x12's weren't even the full 8' long) I had this wood delivered, since I didn't have a vehicle to accommodate it. So, based on their name, some of it I guess was "okay lumber." Some of it was definitely subpar.. It was conclusively not a good value. It's hard to make something (even as non cosmetically sensitive as a garden bed) when the thickness and quality between boards is so drastically varied. I had tried to call into the shop a few times to mention this experience, but I was left waiting on hold for a longer time than I had available. Some in the store are courteous and some are the opposite, but the overall business leaves me wishing I had gone elsewhere. I just have a penchant for wanting to support local businesses, but in this case I wish I hadn't. So, in summary, I got some "okay lumber" and some not okay lumber, at a price that would typically demand some high quality lumber. read more

Bought 36 6x8x8ft beams and 200 stakes for landscaping stairs. Ken's team delivered on time. Unfortunately a few were unusable, unseen, in side the stack. Ken replaced, no questions asked. The name says it all. Overall it's OK because their lumber is good but their prices are the worst on the peninsula. Example 1" x 4" x 20' all red stick of Redwood is nearly $60!? The retail price should be $30 average. That's a 100% mark up over retail! Imagine the cost they're actually paying for their wood. Ok lumber has always been expensive but recently the price hikes are just a joke. I go elsewhere now. read more

Frankly, all the people that are giving OK lumber 5 stars are not doing their homework. While they have a decent selection and will hold your hand as you walk around the yard, there are many other lumber yards in the vicinity with the same quality wood that sell for 30-40% less than OK (and I'm NOT talking Home Depot). I recently priced up $2100 of select heart redwood fencing material at ok lumber, which I can get for $1300 just up the road in Belmont. Same grade/same lengths, everything the same! Please do your research before yelping in your post coital fog- all the good reviews made me visit this place first, and I was shocked at the prices. Thanks! read more

This place is amazing. Customer service is off the charts. First, my wife and I went in with just an idea of what we wanted to build. Alberto had the patience to not only listen and answer our dumb questions, but also to help design exactly what we wanted to build. He made sure we understood everything without being patronizing or having that weird "overly friendly" vibe. When I asked "do I need to buy a power saw for this?", he said "Yeah, but you can just borrow mine." (His, not the company's: he repeated this offer later!) As he was working up an estimate, some have senile guy rammed into our car. Another employer stopped the guy from running off and then ran in to find out whose care it was. I went to check it out and a minute later Alberto was out taking pictures of everything and documenting the crash. When he left the scene he went in to call the San Carlos police for us. After we finished the whole insurance bit, we went inside and Alberto not only had our estimate ready, but also a hand-written report of what he saw, so that we can use it with the insurance company. I don't know how OK lumber compares to others in terms of prices, but I'll probably never find out - I'm a loyal customer from here on out. read more

I think the most telling compliment I can give OK lumber is that I live in Sunnyvale and I drive to OK Lumber in San Carlos whenever I'm doing a 'major' home improvement project. They carry everything you need to do a project. While their tools, material, etc. are professional grade (many of the contractors I know do purchase here) they are always more than willing to help out a 'lowly' DIY-er like myself. read more

Was blown away by the level of customer service, pricing and quality of products that OK Lumber offers. These guys care about their reputation and it shows--the friendliest lumber yard on the Peninsula. (Heck friendliness business of any kind on the Peninsula). I am a home owner and was putting in a red wood pergola and called literally 9 different lumber yards and found OK Lumber to have the best quality, pricing and customer service. The lumber quality was top notch. During my initial visit, I was given a tour of the yard to view the materials I would be using. I was surprised to find that all lumber is covered to minimize sun exposure to ensure you get the best looking lumber. Other lumber yards I visited didn't bother covering their lumber. To be fair, i didn't visit all 9 lumber yards as some of the initial phone conversations and pricing steered me away from these yards so I can't speak to how they care for their product. I made a mistake on my order and was able to swap out for the item I needed without hassle. This is a business I enjoy spending my hard earned money at cause I totally support what OK Lumber stands for and how they conduct their business. Its how I would want my business to be ran if I own a business. For my order, I was assisted with Tim T. the rock star of customer service reps at OK Lumber. He's right there with the best of Nordstroms customer service/cashiers reps. Definitely a lumber yard for your lumber and construction hardware needs. Jon P. is right on. Home Depot is good if you don't have any questions or you want poor quality lumber. But if you want a knowledgable staff and a great product OK Lumber is the place for you. They load up your order into your truck on site. If you need delivery they also deliver for free for orders over $500. My only issue is that their lumber is a little pricey, but the service totaly makes up for it. read more
