Thanks to this store I was able to fix something that has been annoying my wife for many months. One cabinet door below the sink that my wife uses was always open a few inches because one of the hinges got weaker over time. Every time I would walk by, it would give me a vertically-oriented mocking smile. I finally had enough. You would think it would be an easy thing to simply pick out a replacement hinge and install it, but HAH--clearly you have not done much cabinet work before... I brought I picture of my hinge to this store and the exact hinge is no longer made. And I need to take into consideration the hinge overlay (what?!) along with the size of the body of the hinge. Well the bottom line is that after 4 trips to this store trying different hinges I finally installed one that worked. And the guys at this store were extremely helpful and patient--particularly for a part that is only about $7. They definitely helped me do this a lot quicker than I had tried it one my own, and proved the value of buying local. read more

Love this place. I've been in the past to buy tools but this time, I took one of the class to learn about the basics. Ed, my instructor was phenomenal. He's is super knowledgeable and patient. He took the time to explain each machine, their purposes and how to use them. We made a box which at first sound simple but making a perfect box is a lot harder. I'm working on a friends memorial cabinet and ran into a problem with some of my pieces. I called Woodcraft and they said come on in and we'll take a look. This was amazing because I called 3 other places that turned me away. When I arrived they greeted me right away, even while helping other customers. Being a business owner my self, I was impressed with the customer service right off the bat. They evaluated my situation and took the incentive to help me resolve my problem right there and then. The only issue I have with woodcraft is that it is very dangerous to step into the store. I totally came in for a couple pieces of rare wood that should cost less than $30 and end up walking out with a $200+ worth of purchase. I see there are reports of inattentive and condescending staff. I didn't get any attention from the staff but I don't expect any until I ask for help. I like to browse at my own time and pace. And the interaction I had during check out was very friendly, a staff even complemented on the wood I got and showed me his own ongoing project. If there are indeed attitude problems with staff I hope management will be looking it. read more

I'm a big fan of the store and the individual locations in San Carlos and Sacramento. I'd have to give the prize to Sacramento based on a couple factors. 1. Hours - 9am to 5pm doesn't allow people working to use the store. Whether DIY, or in my case a professional. 2. Inventory of larger tools. Dust collectors, jointers, planers, and Festool equipment is on the floor. Even now with the pandemic Sacramento has a full suite of products. Rockler even had better hours than San Carlos! 3. I'm tired of hearing how Woodcraft Online is your competitor. If you feel that way, then carry more inventory! You don't get to make me wait, and still expect me to go through the hoops of showing up and paying in person. 4. You carry very little product outside your own brand. Where's Staerett and Woodpecker? I can put up with a lot, and here I'm trying to share how you can own more of my wallet. But closing at 5pm, is not workable! That's putting the desires of your retail workers (who chose to work in retail) ahead of your customers. read more

He realized I was a novice and I didn't know what I needed. 10 minutes later I had the right materials and step by step instructions on how to do the project. This place has a helluva fine line to walk. There are three types of people walking in their door: 1. People who do world-class, bespoke woodworking every day of their lives, and who know exactly what they need and want sales staff out of their hair. 2. Folks like me who have some idea what they're doing, but who like to think they're on par with the first group and don't want to be embarrassed into revealing their ignorance, but also do in fact need some help. 3. People who aren't woodworkers at all and are either looking to get into the hobby/career, or are buying for a friend or partner, and need intense hand-holding. Each of these categories requires a markedly different level and type of interaction, and I think, reading through these reviews, you can start to get a sense of how hard it must be to pull this balancing act off. That's even before you consider that the pro might want some advice, or the partner-shopper might have received exact instructions on what to buy. The reality is that the store is well-stocked and (nearly always) staffed by folks who spend all day helping other selecting woodworking tools, and then go home and spend their nights and weekends doing beautiful woodwork of their own. Woodworkers as a rule are a bit like techies; we aren't necessarily the most people-y sorts of people, if you catch my drift. But the enthusiasm for, and talent with, wood is evident throughout the store and its staff, and they have the tools to enable you to achieve some fraction of what they have, themselves. To top it off, they'll listen to your dumb woodworking stories, or pretend to admire your crappy woodworking pictures, and maybe even throw in a suggestion or two on what might make them a smidge less crappy next time. If that's not reason enough to shop here, perhaps you're better off ordering on the Internet and praying the equipment is genuine and arrives intact. But they've earned, and will keep, my business. read more

Looking for the store hours on a Sunday, I stumble upon on the reviews page. And realized I never left a review. And I've been to this store for years now. I read them reviews. I read a lot of them. It's all true. Even read through the 1-star reviews-because let me tell you about the 1-star reviews. Imagine your grandpa working in retail. Imagine people asking your grandpa the same questions over and over again all day. Imagine grandkids moving grandpas stuff all over the place and touching everything. Im 40 Yo and I hate people already. I can't imagine how I'll be at that age. Probably not so pleasant. Their not all old, but their seasoned woodcraftsman. They may not be all smiles and happy all the time. And they might have condescending answers, but their answers. Their right answers. I use to think, "gosh that guy has an attitude" but really, their just a bunch of grandpas working at wood shop with stupid ignorant and naïve people walking around Messing up their organized tools. and I love it. This day in age, people want to be pampered, people want to be greated and noticed, people want pretty people to look at when they walk in any kind of establishment. Not here, they might not be smiling all the time. They may even look annoyed, but pick their brain, they know what's up. Look through their grumpy attitudes and love it. Take it. Walk out with all the answers you were looking for. You won't regret it. I recommend this store to everyone I know that has a wood project in mind and they need some answers. You got questions about tools and stain? They got it. They have specialized tools no other store has. I live in Newark, and I will drive 30 mins out of my way to get the right answers. I was amazed with the amount selection of these small blocks used for all types of wood crafting projects. Granted this is my first time in a store like this but wow! I am not handy. My husband, "the weekend warrior" is, so I went in and did some reconnaissance at this beautiful, newly relocated shop. Store Manager Eric greeted me with warmth and enthusiasm and showed me around Woodcraft. They've got everything a carpenter/woodworker would want, from materials, to tools, to books, to classes on Shop Safety, Table Saw 101, Installing Crown Molding, to Making Boxes and more. They even have a section where my 4-year-old could be entertained with Lincoln Logs, a rocking horse, kids' books, and other toys. This is a spacious store with old-fashioned customer service that has a great feel to it. Eric's passion for woodworking is so infectious that I almost want to pick up a hammer. Maybe I'll just pick it up and hand it over to Mr. L. We could use some crown molding. read more

Only the best tools are available here. Quality unlimited. They have a great selection of hard and exotic woods. I recently purchased some scrap sized exotic woods to make a phone and tablet stand for.my desk at work. They usually have some zebra wood scrap for 4.99 a pound. Perfect for small desk projects. They have classes at this shop, 18 and over but they will do classes for younger crowds with a parent. They have a wonderful selection of Japanese hand saws. If you need the best in woodworking this is the place to start. read more

I got my husband a membership to Tech Shop in Redwood City for our anniversary, and since September he has taken a few woodworking classes. We've always passed by Woodcraft while traveling down El Camino, but it wasn't until he took his woodworking classes that we realized that we could pop in here. I've been here twice, and each time I've been greeted and treated kindly. I clearly don't look like I know about thing about wood, but they still are non-judmental. I also like that they aren't pushing. When my husband said, "No, I'm just looking," they let him look. No one followed us. No one pestered us. We just got to look in peace. While I was here though, I was reminded about how my husband feels when I take him to Nordstrom and I'm shopping for shoes--bored. After five minutes, I found some nice tables near the back and sat there while he shopped for about 30 minutes. I came in on 11/04 to purchase a gift card for my husband's birthday, and the sales guy was so kind. I've had two great experiences here, and I only hope your experience(s) is as good as mine. read more

They keep transferring me to someone else to talk to and then tell me to call back the next day and they don't know why I haven't been refunded the money. Enough said. I went to four different places today. I've never been so amazed by the intolerant disregard for what I needed. Finally somebody said go to WoodCraft on El Camino and San Carlos. I did. And I was not only met with people who were willing to help me out and willing to help me solve a problem but they were friendly and they were fun and they tolerated my crying because no one else was willing to take the step to just help solve this myself because my contractor screwed it up. Go there even if they don't have it go there because maybe somebody will help you through the process. Gold stars for all the staff this day. read more

There is just something plain wrong with the staff at this place. I've had several experiences similar to the other reviewer here that gave them one star. Staff that are just weird, and who seem to prattle on about stuff and not provide help. Today I rushed in to grab some sharpening supplies, knew exactly what I wanted. Walked it to the register, the guy there is on the phone going on and on about Delta power tools with somebody, clearly not a sale. Now other folks line up as well, guy still on the damn phone, no acknowledgement, no apparent concept he has customers waiting. Woman wanders out, think she would run the register? Nope she goes off to talk to another customer. Does this place not get the concept of selling stuff? I just walked out and went and purchased what I needed elsewhere. And good luck if you really have deep questions about stuff, from past experiences shopping here for finishing supplies the staff here don't seem to know an awful lot. Don't compare this place to Home Depot, that is such a useless low bar. There are lots of better places. Ordering online from Lie-Nielsen or Lee Valley, shopping at Tooland in San Carlos, K119 Tools in San Bruno, CB Tool Group in San Jose, are all much better experience than shopping here. And forget their limited supply of crazy expensive wood, go shop at MacBeath Hardwood or Southern Lumber or other lumber suppliers. read more

Woodcraft is receiving 1 star for the sole fact that they had what I was looking for. Planning a little wood carving project for a gift. I have 0 experience when it comes to wood carving. I went to Michaels to find some beginner tools for woodcarving. Michaels has very little wood carving items. I was happy to find a specialty shop for exactly what I was looking for at Woodcraft. The first mistake was on me. I walked in to Woodcraft right after work. I work in an office, so I have slacks, dress shoes, and a button up. As soon as I walked in, I noticed that the staff noticed me and they immediately scoffed at this person who did not belong in the store. I noticed this because the cashier looked me up and down and ignored me when I made eye contact. I was un-phased by this small interaction. I found what I was looking for - I then asked for help because I had a few questions about the product. Every question was really basic, but every answer I received was very condescending and demeaning. The cashier continuously rolled his eyes at me upon every question I had like if I was offending him for not having an immense knowledge of the wood works world. I'm not the type who write bad reviews - but this experience should be a wake up call. I don't think specialty stores get enough love from people, so they need to step up their customer service game so they could make up for not having a huge shiny store. If they could tell I was new, they should do everything possible to gain me as a customer and take an extra step to make sure they make me feel comfortable so I can recommend to others and have me return. I will not return. Advice: go to the store wearing work boots. Maybe you can get away with making them think that you're like them. Step up your customer service game Woodcraft. read more

I am a complete neophyte when it comes to woodworking, but need a table with dimensions and features I won't get any other way except to build it myself. To get started, I took the "Introduction to Woodworking" class at Woodcraft of San Carlos last Saturday. I had my doubts about whether I would even like woodworking, but it turns out I do! The class was great! The instructor, Claude, had significant depth of knowledge and experience in woodworking and was also an excellent instructor. His demonstrations were clear and his feedback on each step of the project ensured that you got good results. The project, a well designed 5" x 7" lidded box, was carefully planned to be completed in one day (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) Making this small object provided experience on a jointer, planer, table saw, band saw, drill press and router, plus some hand tools including a hand plane, chisel -- and don't forget the sanding block! Woodcraft's "Shop Safety" class, an additional 3 hours, is a prerequisite. While being primarily about safety, that class, also taught by Claude, included a lot of "value-added" information about the properties of wood, how equipment is designed, set up and used, what to look for in tools and equipment, etc. You can probably find less expensive ways to get an intro to woodworking, but, for me, this was a worthwhile investment. I came away from it feeling more than successful, with a cool little poplar box I made with my own two hands, a rather intimidated feeling about how much more there is to know, but confidence that I will likely enjoy learning it. Bottom line: Highly recommend this class. read more

For a new wood worker this place is paradise. I found it through a recommendation and love it. I took two classes from Claude who is an excellent teacher, and I learned a lot. I have returned as s retail customer to buy beautiful hardwoods and tools, and have been very impressed by the knowledgable staff. I'm so glad Woodcraft exists. All of the staff are great, but Bena is particularly helpful and friendly, with a warm outgoing personality. read more

I'm a woodworker and this place is my go to for anything related to accessories, jigs items, hardware and damn near anything I could need is there. Woodcraft normally has a lot of good sales, and I go there to liberate them from all manner of sanding papers, screws and other hardware on a regular basis. If you're a new woodworker, the staff at this place will set you right. Everyone is super friendly, and will point you in the right direction. Example, I was trying to build a jig for cutting angles consistently and safely for making lots of picture frames. I was brought into the woodshop they teach at and shown the jig they use. I got all the parts for replicating that jig, and now I cut any angle safely and can batch them like crazy. Lots of good hints and tips are sitting in those guys heads, you just have to ask. Go in there with what you want to do, talk about your project and you'll be sorted. Great place to go, and I'll probably be liberating a festool sander sometime this year from them too ;) read more

Milk Paint is what brought me here but I stayed to ogle all of the cool possible projects and tools. The store is a good size. I tinker and probably don't really know what I'm doing but I'm guessing their selection is enough to make any level of hobbiest squeal like a little girl. Found this store online when I was looking for gel stain and decided to make a visit. I love specialty stores because they all kinds of neat things you would not find in your normal lumber store. Customer service was great, I was having difficulty deciding on how to save my project, but the staff member there was helpful, and I am almost certain his recommendations will save me thousands. I'm rating this place 5 stars for 2 reasons: I bought a wood finishing product at another well-known brand store and it didn't even last one winter! I did some research on-line, found a product I might like better, and that I could buy it at Woodcraft. When I went in, the gentleman who helped me was very knowledgeable and helpful, and I'm very happy with the product he sold me. It's had 2 winters now and is going strong! I went back for some interior finish and again was thrilled with the product recommended. My son is taking wood shop in high school - and the people here are so generous with their time, and very helpful to this kid who's just discovering how fun woodworking is. I really appreciate their patience with him. A note on prices - They sell the foam brushes here for just a bit more than you'd pay at OSH. However, the ones the sell here are made in America, and *much* better made! The others are from China, and the interior plastic bit which gives the foam stability is horrendous. It cut through the foam, the foam shredded, got floppy and was just useless! So much better to spend a few cents more and get a tool that does the job. Simple cheap tool - but the ones here were sooooo much better! My only complaint - and it's with the parent company, not this location - is that they put their own part numbers on Bessey clamps, with no easy way to cross reference them. It was frustrating to try to buy for someone else, when I had the Bessey number, and no other info. Bottom line - Great place! Great people, great product, fair pricing, even great parking! read more

Having searched all over the Bay Area for some hard woods (i.e. anything other than Douglas Fir and Redwood), I found Woodcraft. They were polite and courteous on the phone. I told them I was just doing a small project, and I was looking for a 2x4 piece of hard wood. They said they had a variety and can mill just about anything I needed. It sounded all too good to be true seeing as I'd called around to so many places. They must be lying to me. However, I was desperate for the wood, so I loaded my children in the car and off we went. The gentleman was so helpful and efficient. He showed me all the different types of wood and explained he could cut basically any size I needed. I didn't need much - a piece of 2x4 around 24 inches long. I selected my wood, and then I asked if I would have to come back to pick it up later once it had been cut to my specifications. He said he could do it right away. He asked to give him 5 minutes. My kids and I waited in their kid friendly waiting area, and voila, he cut my wood in no time. The wood is higher priced than what you are buying at Home Depot, but you are paying for a higher quality wood so you should be anticipating paying more. Also, the gentleman that helped me out said if I wanted to order several pieces the size I needed, then they would charge me for the time to cut the wood, however, because my cut was so small he wasn't going to charge me for cutting.
