Sushi is fine, basically at the level of a typical mid tier Canadian place. some of the pieces of fish we were served were still partly frozen!. My main issue is how brutally slow the meal is. If you come here be prepared to spend 3-4 hours waiting for all your food. We were served approximately 1 or 2 rolls every 30 minutes. We have now been here close to 3 hours and are still hungry. Oka san is a great sushi chef. Sushi quality is Michilen one star plus. Restuarant is tidy and has 10 seats only. It opens 5 days a week from 6pm to 10pm. That is a total of 20 restaurant hours for 10 seats per week. We are lucky to get two seats because someone cancel or do not show up. We tried large sashimi combo, sushi (tuna, salmon, sweet shrimp, squid, 3 toro, scallop, yellow tail), mimi Oka roll. We like sushi the best. We stayed at Fairmont Jasper for several nights and were able to get my son and daughter to enjoy Oka san's sushi by keep stopping by to check after 9pm. read more

The best artistic presentation of sushi as well as being the best sushi I've had. A one man operation in a 12 seat sushi bar (10 seats at the bar, 1 2 top table). Oka-San will take special orders but the best option is the 24 and 48 piece sashimi is the best bet for tasty sushi in a lovely but simplistic presentation. The mini and full Oka Special roll is the perfect combination of umami, spicy and mouth fullness. Bonus number one is if Oka-San has in the albacore toro, get a piece or two, it is melt in your mouth goodness. This is a very delayed review of Oka sushi. We visited Oka early last year when we were in Jasper celebrating our anniversary. Seeing the high rating and the rave reviews of Oka Sushi, I thought that I had found a hidden gem of a place. We grew up with sushi in Vancouver but have been living in Alberta the last few years and so our expectations were somewhere in between. We made a reservation months in advance and were happy that they had a spot left for the night that we wanted, as it seems reservations are hard to come by. Once seated at the restaurant, the experience soon began plummeting like a never-ending one directional rollercoaster. Oka is a small restaurant. Aside from us, there was only one other group of about 5 people sitting at the bar seats. We ordered about three quarters of the menu items including the deluxe sashimi (it was a small menu) quite promptly after sitting down, and our first dish came out after about half an hour to 40 minutes of waiting. At this point, we were starving, and quickly went to town on the California roll. Now normally, I would never consider ordering a California roll, because let's face it, it's not really authentic Japanese. However in this case, due to the limited menu and also due to the fact that the Cali roll was overpriced enough, I had believed it might be real Dungeness crab. I was wrong, it wasn't. It was imitation crab. But whatever, no one ever made a bad California roll. Except this day... What really threw me off and sealed the deal with Oka sushi was not the price nor the wait. It was the horrid quality of the rice. I would have otherwise been willing to wait for all our other dishes to come out, and given them another chance. Oka's menu consists mainly of sashimi, rolls or nigiri, where the sushi rice can make or break the sushi as much as the quality of the fish. The rice in the California roll we got was undercooked and mushy. I glanced over and saw the large rice cooker and knew at once that even if the fish is of the highest quality, all of our remaining dishes would have the same sushi rice. That is absolutely unacceptable for us, especially after waiting for so long and having somewhat reasonable expectations for a well made meal given that it was our anniversary, given Oka sushi's high ratings, and given all the fantastic reviews. This may have been an off night for Oka sushi, and I felt so bad given Oka's age that I didn't post a review until now. However I think that consistency is important for a sushi restaurant, and the night of our visit it was disappointing. This was the first ever Japanese restaurant where I paid the bill after the first dish, canceled the rest of the orders, and walked out. I've never done that in my life, I felt terrible, but I couldn't afford to waste any more of my time on waiting around to be more disappointed in a meal. read more

Situated in the Jasper Park Lodge, this Is my most favourite sushi place I have ever been too. I mean, I will (and have) drive all the way to Jasper from Edmonton just to eat here. The fish is incredibly fresh as it comes from Vancouver several times a week. Oka, the sushi chef, is very proud of his food to the point he doesn't do take out as he cannot guarantee the quality of the food after it walks out the door. Unfortunately, the place is tiny which can make it difficult to get in. They only do one round of reservation at either 6 or 6:30. If you can't get a reservation, you might just have to swing by and peer in the windows and hope someone feels pity on you and leaves. Seriously though, I've had good luck showing up around 8pm. Every year I eat at oka and every year it gets better. This man is a genius. I have never had better sushi anywhere else in Canada. His toro is simply perfection, all his fish are fresh and he is more than willing to help out a novice sushi eater. This place will always be a 5/5 stars in my book. read more

Rude and Terrible Customer Service: So we had called in and booked reservation a day ahead but when we walked in, the first thing the waitress said was "we are full"... She didn't even ask us anything and went straight to denying us service and pretty much telling us to go away. We tried to explain but she continued to defend herself with a very stubborn attitude and tone that there was no way she could've taken our reservation down due to a fully booked reservation that evening. On top of that, she claims that she would have remembered our name (for the reservation) if we had called in and placed one, because she's the only one who picks up the phone. According to her we "must have called the wrong restaurant ". (There's only one sushi restaurant there! And we used the phone number from google maps.) In addition, the chef rudely told me that the restaurant's policy is that they only take reservations months ahead. He passive aggressively pointed to the general customers who are dining in that they all had made their reservations months ahead, and told me to go read the restaurant's policy. Like wtf?? Who does that? That's not how you treat your patrons and passerby's. Lastly, as we were driving away, the lady called us and told us that we did in fact made a reservation (under our name), but it was booked on the day after. She even got the guts to ask if we want to keep or cancel the reservation lol! (Yeah sure! See you at 6:30 tomorrow, can't wait to taste your fish and experience great customer service! Wait, what about the restuarant policy? What a joke!) Maybe the sushi is amazing (but doesn't seem like it from the pics and other reviews), this place will not last, and I hope it does not. The chef is very meticulous and attentive to details, he makes sure your sushi is well done and nicely decorated. This place had some of the best sushi I've ever eaten. Strongly recommended, but you should reserve prior to coming because it can get packed fairly quickly. read more

We were craving for sushi after 10 days of Rocky Mountain road trip and we found this place on yelp. It was located in Fairmont Jasper which I wanted to stay so badly but couldn't as fully booked. The restaurant itself was very tiny and only one chef and one server were working. We didn't make a reservation but we were able to put our name on the waiting list and we got finally seated on the table after 45 min or so of wait. After we waited for so long, we were starving and wanted to start eating just anything. However, the service was very very slow as only one chef was making all the sushi and he seemed to be taking more time to chat with customers seating at the sushi bar than making sushi. After we waited over half an hour without getting any food to start, we got finally irritated and wanted to just leave but we decided to just stay as we didn't want to waste our wait which was over an hour. We hoped at least food is good but to make it worse, nothing we ate there was good and we regretted our choice so much. I don't understand how this place has so good reviews on yelp, it was actually one of the worst sushi we've ever had. I really can't recommend this place to anyone based on our experience, especially if you have dined at authentic sushi places in the past as you'll get seriously disappointed. read more

You get your order one item at a time because he takes turns with everyone in restaurant, so make sure you have a lot of time to stay and relax and you like the people you go with! Wow. I hate to reiterate what everyone is saying but damn this is the best sushi I've ever had and I've eaten ALOT of sushi! Oka is such a friendly man and the fish that he gets shipped in is the freshest I have ever eaten. Toro is to die for. My boyfriend and I were super lucky to get two seats around the bar (this place seats only 11 people) right at 7. We had literally just got into town from Edmonton. There is only a certain amount of each item on the menu and when it's sold out, it's sold out. We tried unsuccessfully to eat here, and felt that both the restaurant and the Fairmont lied about the restaurant's walk-in policy. We called twice on different days, and each time were told that the restaurant's two seatings (both early in the evening) were booked, but that we could try to walk in later in the evening. So we went to the Fairmont to try to get on the waitlist. The hostess at the restaurant immediately told us that we couldn't be seated at any time that night, because the restaurant really only does one seating that lasts two hours. The restaurant's failure to be honest about its seating policy was rude and inconvenient - and appeared to be calculated to lure us into the Fairmont ecosystem so that we would eat at one of the other restaurants at the hotel. I have never been to Japan, but I would imagine that Oka Sushi is about as close as you could get! I have never tasted fresher fish, which is expertly prepared by Oka himself. We ordered a couple different rolls, the assorted sushi plate and asked him to prepare some Sashimi platters for us. The Sashimi melts in your mouth, and the Nigiri and rolls are so perfectly put together that all it takes a small dab of soy sauce. Pretty much heaven. Oka has a high standard for his meals, and so does not buy ingredients that aren't perfect. When we went, there were no Eel, Yellowtail or Red Snapper, as the fish wasn't fresh enough and too pricey. It's nice to eat somewhere that the Chef has so much pride in the food that he is serving. I found the prices reasonable, certainly compared to lesser restaurants in Calgary. (e.g.: 6 piece rolls starting at $4.75 - $5.75) As the place only seats 14, defintely make a reservation for 6 pm, get a seat at the bar, enjoy some Sake or Asahi and watch the master work! This is definitely not an experience for people in a rush. We would strongly consider driving out from Calgary again JUST for Oka Sushi. read more

This place is straight up awesome. It's super small and there is one sushi chef who makes everything fresh with fish flown in from Vancouver. It only seats 14, is a bit pricy but it's super worth it. He is super cool and the sushi is lights out good. Be sure to ask him to check out postcards of his home mountain town in Japan. The setup is super cool and he has good tunes playing. BEST SUSHI AROUND!!!! Oka (the owner and chef) is a wonderful sushi chef who takes pride in every roll and the ingredients are so fresh you would swear that you were on the coast. He also has 60 little lockers that customers can rent out to keep their own personal chop sticks in for the year and he donates all of the proceeds from them to different charities in Jasper - TOO CUTE!! read more
