Something Else Steakhouse is quite the warm charming restaurant in downtown Jasper, AB. We've been there before a couple of years ago to have take out. This time we ate at the restaurant - we shared Ouzo shrimps and a large Greek salad; I had the blackened chicken breast with spaghetti and meat sauce, and my partner the blackened chicken with potatoes and vegetables. I ordered a 12oz rib eye rare-med rare and it was okay - great flavor that came from the cut itself, much less the prep and cook. For sides, I chose Caesar salad (in a cup) which I thought had a nice dressing and rice pilaf. Everything is cafeteria-quality, meaning you'll curb hunger, but it's nothing to dream about. Here's where it gets weird. Baked spaghetti seems like an attempt to modify Baked Ziti and it just doesn't work. Too much cheese, not enough pasta. It just doesn't fit. Next is the veggie side - three limp asparagus stalks laid over an out of season corn on the cob. I don't think we went beyond a single bite. This should be an easy fix for management. We randomly found this Greek restaurant while exploring the town of Jasper, which is smaller than Banff. It was nearly empty with three other customers and were seated right away. We love Greek food and was shock that they have Saganaki, baked sheep milk cheese for those not familiar with Greek food. Everything we had was excellent! We've order a bunch of appetizers to share. The dip sampler came with tzatziki, kopanisti, and humus with warm pita bread 4/5. Honey Garlic Chicken Wings 4/5. Flaming Sakanagi 5/5 with cool presentations. The Chicken and Lamb Souvlaki (kebab) marinated in herbs was delicious with fresh large portion of Greek salad, rice, pita and homemade tzatziki sauce 5/5. We came into the town around 3pm, most restaurants were closed. This is the one we just saw and opened, so we walked in, ordered steak, shrimp and calamari Calamari is the best one I have ever had. Something else in Jasper, Alberta? It started raining on Labor Day weekend, so we ducked into the nearest restaurant, which happened to be Something Else Restaurant. Very clean, spacious, modern looking restaurant, with only a few booths filled with people. We were shown a booth, and the menu, with water served promptly. Decided to order a $20 Canadian 9" Hawaiian pizza for the two of us, along with a coke. Meanwhile the restaurant is so large that a crying baby on the opposite side of the restaurant didn't bother us. They put families with small kids far away from those groups of adults only - a good sign. Took about 15 minutes for the pizza to be ready. Four large 4" round slices of Canadian ham, on top of a pineapple laced cheese pizza. Wife and I could barely finish the pizza, it was so filling. Would have liked more ham, as half the pizza was just cheese. Something else? Good service, good ambiance, but very ordinary food. We arrived late into Jasper from Vancouver and made the mistake to stop at the first restaurant we found open. Not sure why we didn't look at the menu first before sitting. Everything on the menu is overpriced and they're having a food identity crisis. There was steak, Italian, Greek and every other kind of food you could think of on there. We decided to just order the Jambalaya and share it since it was already late. It came out looking like pasta. My bad for not reading the menu carefully - it said penne in a cajun white wine sauce. Still not sure where the Jambalaya comes into play...but ok. Taste wise, it was worse than microwave TV dinners. 1 Star only for our server being so pleasant and the bartender recommending a decent sour. The menu here jumps a few different places but I highly suggest sticking to their Greek offerings. I got the donair and it was absolutely amazing. The meat was so flavorful and not dripping in grease like I was worried it might be. The Tzatziki sauce is apparently made in house and it was just delicious. So much so I wish they sold it in containers because I would have loved to have some to bring back to the room for snacking with some Nan bread or something of that sorts. Yes it's a little dated but the servers were nice and on the ball with looking after us so I don't think I could have asked for much more. We will definitely be back next time we roll through on vacation. read more

I was recommended to come to this place by friends of family, but my dining experience was underwhelming. Firstly, the hours on the website show 10pm closing. We showed up at 8:45pm only to be told the kitchen was soon closing and we were pressured to order. The waitress told us that it was "winter hours" and the actual closing was at 9pm instead. I ordered the lamb souvlaki, which I thought was pretty good. My date's blackened chicken was however disappointing. The chicken was okay, but the vegetable medley was overcooked and mushy. We came here based on recommendations from 2 of our friends. It was 9pm on a Tuesday night and the place was pretty empty. There's a smallish bar that had a few people gathered around. We were sat in a booth that could have fit a small army. As our friends suggested, we started with the Saganaki, which is pan-seared Greek cheese torched tableside. A spritz of lemon on top and some pita bread and you're good to go. It was tasty, but not as amazing as I'd hoped. The cheese was not as soft as I had imagined. I wanted it to spread onto the pita bread, but it was more like a soft taffy consistency. We also had friend calamari, which came with tentacles (yum) and body. An average dish.The dipping sauce nothing special. For an entree, we split the chicken creole pasta which was nice and homey, especially since we were craving warmth after climbing on a glacier a few hours beforehand. Add a few Kokanees (my favorite mass-produced Canadian beer), and we had a pretty good time on our first night in Jasper. read more

I enjoyed this restaurant very much. It was very comfortable inside. Not flashy or a fashion statement, but the place you would sit and relax after a day of skiing. My family felt really comfortable there, and I enjoyed bringing our children. Our server was friendly and helpful. My husband and I had the deal of the day which was Donair: sliced beef with tzatziki, onion, parsley and pita; with salad. We also started with a lentil soup. My one daughter had a child's spaghetti, and my other daughter had the Penne Creole au Fromage - basically pasta baked with cheese with a spicy sauce. All items came out hot and good. We really enjoyed our soups and the donair meat was delicious. The salad was okay but a little sloppy on how it was made. Both girls loved their pasta. The penne looked particularly delicious....I wasn't allowed to sample. If you want a tasty, reasonably priced meal in a comfortable setting try this! Food was decent but the service lacking. This restaurant is an interesting choice of food while experiencing Jasper. It is listed as a steak house on a few websites but that is definitely not all it is limited to. There is a wide variety of pretty tasty Greek food. The Greek entrees are all accompanied by generous sides, but the entrees themselves seem to be dwarfed by the rest of the meal. I had the spanakopita (delicious), my girlfriend had the lamb souvlaki ( tasty) and our friend visiting from Hawaii had the steak (it was her first time tasting AAA Alberta beef.....but unfortunately she wasn't wowed). Not sure about the usual dinning experience but our server was not diligent. It was clear this was only a job to him. He only visited our table 4 times- to take our orders, drop off the drinks, drop off the food and to drop off the bill......and the rest of the time he stood at the bar and talked with his co-workers. Im really torn on this place. Location was great, in downtown center. Food was probably 2.5 stars. We got the Jimbayala starter, penne and ribs. The food was not awful but it was no better than a microwave meal. I do not think the chef has tried a jimbalaya before because we got a couple cups of microwave rice, dried pita bread and 5 pieces of cooked shrimp. It was really plain and tasted worse than a microwave dinner. The BBQ sauce and the meat on the ribs were worse than Costco oven baked ribs - I honestly suggest they stock up on frozen Costco ribs and serve those instead - it was really not good. The penne was very plain as well and definitely not worth the $20+ price tag with no meat. The beer was great though. All in all the food was not awful; probably a 2.5. But it was so overpriced I can't give the experience more than a 1. The people who rave about eating the best food ever here are either rigged reviews or have not eaten out of Jasper before. Our Greek meal at Kamloops was same price but magnitudes better than this place. read more

Super juicy and tender 12 oz Ribeye. I've had the Filet in the Saltlik in Calgary, and it's nothing compared to this restaurant's steak. Best steak I've had in Canada so far. Glad they're open in the off-season right now, some of the other restaurants in Jasper are closed until Summer tourist season. read more

Located just off the Main Street, Something Different has a casual atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome. The decor won't win any awards but the food more than makes up for that. The place itself is clean and spacious, and the staff is friendly but not really attentive. We went when it wasn't busy either, so not getting refills or checked in on to make sure everything was alright was unexpected and not appreciated. You wouldn't know by the name, but this is an American/Greek type restaurant. We stopped in for lunch on Sunday of a long weekend and there were surprisingly only 3 - 4 other tables of diners during that time. I think the outside is a little confusing and doesn't do a great job of pulling people in. Or maybe we caught it on an unusually un-busy time. Anyway.... we were greeted by 3 staff when we entered and quickly shown to our table. It was chilly outside and we were were hoping to be able to warm up - that wasn't the case. Service was fast and friendly and we both ordered a burger. Although tasty, it was incredibly greasy. So much so that we had to eat them with a fork and knife, otherwise it was just completely falling apart. I found it very strange that they bring four squeeze bottles of condiments to your table (like... the heinz squeeze bottles that you buy at the grocery store) instead of just dressing the burger in the kitchen. Or at least, if you're going to bring condiments to the table, try to dress them up a bit. Prices also seemed very high for the quality and quantity that you receive. This restaurant is definitely SOMETHING ELSE. Jasper has this line up of restaurants in the main centre and pretty much all of them have an identity crisis. Most of them are Greek restaurants... but surprisingly also specialize in "cajun stirfries", pizzas, pasta, steaks, and everything you can think of. ADVICE: Please stick to greek food and be good at it because they're not bad! They can be improved but you don't have to have EVERY cuisine covered to lure people in. I ate here impulsively one day for lunch. I ordered their LAMB SOUVLAKI which came along with rice, pita bread, and a side of greek salad. I also ordered their SAGANAKI (I loveee). I was quite pleased with the food, but it was really really really greasy especially the souvlaki. I took some of my food home as there were too much but as soon as I got home, the paper bag they've used to wrap the food was covered in grease....... I'm okay with greasy food but not to that extent. Their portions are really HUGE which is why I took some of my food home. My bill came to almost $45 but with how the portions were, I was okay with that. I could've gotten the same food and a bit better quality at Stepho's in Vancouver for half the amount though, but we're in Jasper.... it's expensive here. Service was good too and quite attentive. Will I go back? Definitely not. It's really pricey for what it is. read more
