We made a reservation for five at Okayama steakhouse. We only had to wait a few minutes to sit down after we arrived. The hostess was very friendly and we had a good view of the chef. I don't think you could have a really bad view anyway. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. This was the first time my grandson went to a Teppanyaki restaurant. He loved it and it brought joy to our faces to see how much fun he had. The expression of joy, and also how the chef interacted with him, left us laughing. The chef was very entertaining and landed all the tricks. We had so much food we were busting at the seams. I personally had a filet mignon dinner. The steak was done at a perfect medium. The salad was as expected. The noodles, the vegetables and the fried rice were delicious. They were two things I didn't really like that we were given. One was the hibachi soup and the second was the Tokoyaki. The soup tasted like steak seasoning to me and the Takoyaki was too mushy. The only thing us adults were really bummed about was there was no bar there. They did have Japanese beer, sake and wine, but they were mostly bottled or canned. I wasn't in the mood after that for the alcohol so I just chose a Japanese creamy soda that was melon flavored. It was OK. I didn't really care for it too much as well. I expected a more stronger melon taste. For appetizers, we got the crispy calamari. It was done to a light crisp, which made it enjoyable to eat. My grandson got the french fries which was a huge basket for a little kid. He loved it. We had a fun time together as a family, laughing and enjoying each other's company I would definitely go back again, even though they didn't have a bar. read more

What a great alternative to ShoGun and Benihana for South Bay residents! They don't have to leave their Eastlake/Chula Vista bubble for some Teppanyaki. The place is quite small, but they made the most of it. They do have stand alone tables if you'd like to just dine in without the show, but why not get a show with your dinner. The chef was cool as well as our server. He was attentive and nice. The food itself was really tasty, definitely rivals Benihana/ShoGun. Okayama's standard entrees came with all the fixins the other guys have PLUS a small portion of noodles! That was a pleasant surprise. If you're not familiar a dinner set comes with miso soup, veggies & a couple of pieces shrimp (along with your choice of protein of course & rice). Pricing is competitive for what you get, the place is super clean & the parking lot is big. We didn't make a reservation for a weeknight dinner, but I can see this place filling up. We'll definitely be back as it is a block away from my family's house. read more

my first hibachi experience and it was excellent! perfect way to celebrate any occasion with a bigger group of people. as soon as we entered the place, we were greeted and seated at our table that was reserved beforehand. every single person working was friendly and warm, including the chefs of course. the food was delicious and the portions were generous! Came here with my guy's family and it was such a fun show! Our chef was funny and gave such a great performance! Service was top notch for sure! Everyone (kids, parents, adults, etc) at my table was smiling, laughing, and enjoying their time. I got the chicken and shrimp with fried rice. My fried rice was good but had a very strong garlic flavor that was nearly too much. I really liked the veggies, noodles, and my chicken, but my shrimp tasted like chicken due to the order of it being cooked. My guy got the steak, and it was cooked a perfect medium rare as requested! I've only had hibachi at Benihana before and this was soo much better. On the pricier side for the amount you get, but it does include a show. I hope they work on improving the flavors a bit so that everything doesn't taste similarly to one another. read more

10/10 experience. It was my first time at a Hibachi type restaurant. There wasn't a lot of people when I went so I was seated right away. Servers were amazing, cook was amazing, funny and entertaining. There isn't a negative thing to say about the food. Everything was amazing and well priced. Located in the Eastlake/Otay area near Walmart. Nice little place. They cook the food right in front of you giving a show. Place was clean. Got there when it opened and the place filled up pretty quickly. The service was great. The prices are good, not overpriced compared to similar Japanese restaurants. To top it off, the food was very good. The chef at our table accommodated some of our food requests without question. I would definitely come back. First of all, I am very excited about this new spot in Chula Vista. Parking is not a problem. When we walked in, we were immediately met with hospitality despite my party not entirely present. The interior was clean and very intimate. As we sat, you almost feel like you were preparing for an upcoming show. The chef arrived and I was already at the edge of my seat with excitement. now I've been to many Teppanyaki restaurants in my time so my mind was already expecting the basic tricks in their performance. Boy was I in for a surprise. I don't want to spoil your experience, but our chef was very interactive and entertaining. The food was very delicious. I am craving the fried rice as I type this review. Took the family here for dinner on a busy Saturday night. They just soft-opened, so they are still figuring some things out. Ordered the Filet and Shrimp, which were delicious. The owners (who are super kind) used to own the nearby Okama, where they served the Hibachi steak but didn't cook it in front of you. Prices are a little high for the area, but they have a children's menu for 12 and under. Ambiance is simple, but well lit and well ventilated. We love having a new Teppanyaki place nearby! The food was delicious and filling because they serve noodles with our hibachi steak order, in addition to the miso soup, salad, veggies and rice. First, this place should have a higher star review. The only one star it has is because some clown that didn't even go there didn't like that they couldn't find a menu. Don't be like that person. Your incompetence as a human being shouldn't be taken out on someone else. As for this place... fantastic. For two people my wife and my bill came to about $132. This was after a 25% tip because I thought our server Norman and the chef were both excellent and deserved it. I know that might still seem a little steep, lemme explain. For that price we both got soup, a really good size and tastey salad (I usually hate salads but liked this), a large portion of noodles, a larger portion of fried rice (enough to take a ton home), fried vegetables (lil corn, mushrooms, zuchinni, carrots, onions), filet mignon perfectly cooked, shrimp that my wife loved (I hate all seafood), chicken that was wonderful, creamy mango japanese drink for me and a soda for her, mochi ice cream for desert. This isn't a small amount of food. If you get the feast for two you will get more than you get at the vast majority of places and have enough to eat the day after. I feel like anywhere else in this area, the price would be over 132 before tip so great job Okayama! Additionally, the chef does all kinds of cool chef tricks with the spatula, egg, fire, food, everything. There was a birthday party there and as cool as I thought it was as an adult, it seems pretty awesome for kids too. So if I have to choose between spending $132 here, or $132 for some subpar food at cheesecake factory, this place wins every single time. It's where Rubios used to be, and even though I used to enjoy Rubios... this place is way better. So yeah, go here. Your stomach will thank you. read more

Kevin was our server, very friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, quick service. Our chef was Mickey and also very friendly as well as Kim, I guess she is the manager or owner. We chose to try the Okayama Special Dinner for 2- $67.70 - chicken, New York steak and Shrimp, sautéed mix veggies, noodles; plus all the sides like soup, rice, and veggie salad. I love how it's so close to where i live. Practically ten minutes and i don't have to travel 30 minutes to eat Hibachi! Food was great. I ordered the Hibachi combo Chicken and Steak. My hubby ordered Filet Mignon and Lobster. Request your Hibachi Chef to lay off on the sauce because it was a little bit salty. The Ambiance needs a little work. Maybe a Terra Cotta here and there. I don't think this restaurant is Japanese authentic. It's probably owned by Chinese or Vietnamies. Just because they are Asians, it doesn't mean that they can cook Japanese food right. There are many Japanese restaurants that are not owned by the Japanese. Be careful eating Sushi at non Japanese restaurants. If they don't know how to process uncooked sushi fish right, you can get sick. read more

The first time we visited this place, it was absolutely wonderful. This past time, was not so great. The rice was undercooked (I ordered extra because the first experience was so good), the service was rushed, and the chef dumped extra sauce on the plate when asked not to (I find the teriyaki sauce to be too sweet)... the rest was still good, but the experience was overall lacking compared to the first visit. As for hibachi places, definitely worth a try, but hopefully the consistency improves. read more

I love teppanyaki and I was so excited for this place to open up. I was skeptical at first thinking that the restaurant would be too small because in my mind the previous business Rubios seemed a bit tight but I was pleasantly surprised. I think they had 5 or 6 grills that each sat 10 people so I definitely think they could do well business wise if they stay popular. I will say that the only negative thing is the decor. It's very plain and they even left a lot of the Rubios decor which is a bit culturally confusing as you can imagine. But the food tasted great and our chef was amazing, skilled, and super funny! Did a few things I haven't seen at any other teppanyaki. Let's just say I'm not good at catching food thrown at me with my mouth and look out if you're in the splash zone But me and my family loved it overall and will definitely be regular customers as we live just across the street.
