As a frequent flyer of Sushia .. I was extremely disappointed with my recent experience at this restaurant. Not only was our food significantly delayed for a pick up, but when it finally arrived, all three of the premium rolls we ordered were incorrect. Considering the higher price point of these specialty rolls, and past experience, I expected more of a "quality control" feature. What made the situation even more frustrating was that the manager, Julie, clearly acknowledged there was a problem with our order. However, the only response we received was a brief, "I'm sorry." While an apology is appreciated, it did little to address the inconvenience of waiting an extra 40 minutes for the food that wasn't even what we ordered. There was no meaningful effort to make things right, no explanation for the mistakes, other than "we are working on that internally" and no attempt to compensate for the poor experience. Mistakes can happen at any restaurant, but customer service is what separates a good establishment from a bad one. Based on the totality of circumstances from the delay of the food being ready when stated and then the order being incorrect, I had expected a bit more. Unfortunately, the lack of urgency and accountability shown by management, Julie, left a very negative impression. Between the excessive wait time, incorrect order, and inadequate response from management, this was not an experience I would recommend, and I will be hesitant to return, which is very unfortunate because we are frequent flyers and seeing quite a bit of new faces today makes me wonder if more is going on internally. Adding, as a frequent flyer, there are times that our food is incorrect with our customizations, but because we are so appreciative of the one server when they are short staffed and the quality of the food, we generally don't say anything, the reason for this review is more of the lack of customer service experience firsthand by the manager, Julie. read more

If you're in East Lake area and haven't tried Sushiya, you gotta go. On the weekdays they have a lunch specials that are so good and reasonably priced. My go to is always the bulgogi beef. It comes with a salad with ginger dressing, tempera vegetables, California roll and miso soup (if you're dining in) and your protein of choice. This lunch special has good sized portions and is always good. There's also sushi rolls you can order along with many other Asian choices. If you haven't tried it, you need to. Came here late Thursday night, and it was a very slow night as we were one of the couple tables they had. I forgot my servers name but she was friendly, and quick. I've been coming here for maybe 8 years now and The food was absolutely delicious as always! I loved my crunchy roll and the gyoza was so amazing I could literally eat like 3 plates of gyoza alone. I haven't eaten at this spot in a very long time - like probably over 10-14 years at this point, and really only because I was barely in this area again until recently and truly, so many other sushi spots have opened up and this spot just ended up getting pushed further down the list of options... With all of that being said, my family and I were pleasantly surprised. They have a great lunch bento combo that comes with a bunch. Their kids meals are quite filling, and their sushi was standard and really great. We loved their katsu since it was panko breaded and deliciously crispy. I had a yummy snow krab roll, agedashi tofu, garlic edamame, and Hubby had a crunchy roll and baked salmon roll. The rest of our family had various menu items as well and they all really enjoyed it. The prices are also pretty affordable and we were happy to spend our New Year's day lunch here after a late morning hike. They even brought out cute chopsticks assistance devices for the kids that make the chopsticks easier to use, and we loved that they had cute plates for them as well. My boys were slightly rowdy but calmed down after their cool plates were set down in front of them. Its the little things. Lol. Lunch special was great. Always yummy and filling. On the table was was a lunch special menu M-Th 11-4 pm. And so we ordered California rolls but planned to take them to go. When we got the bill, they said the California rolls were charged regular price and not the advertised price because the special is not for to-gos. That was a disappointment. There was nothing on the signs that it was only for dine-in. They should be explicit. We ended up cancelling the order because it would of cost approximately $20 but we were charged $40+. I saw that there were specials on the table listed so I ordered the salmon with avocado roll 5 pc, snow crab with crunch 5 pc, & spicy tuna roll 5 pc. It was an inch wide. The smallest tuna roll pieces I've seen. Ironically, not much flavor to them unless I used soy sauce. You're better off ordering the full roll off the menu for ones with better flavor. I was still hungry after those 3 mini rolls that I ordered another full roll off the menu. Unfortunately, after going here for 10+ years, the quality of this place has gone downhill. The quality of their food is just not the same, especially their sushi rolls. Whoever is now making them never puts enough rice and fully roll them and the rolls ALWAYS fall apart. I think they still do the "50%" off rolls for dine in, but they are now more around $10 which isn't much cheaper than other spots. The fish is still fresh but the rice almost has a hard feeling. They also give smaller meat portions for their bentos. They still seem popular, it was a 45 minute wait at 2 pm on a weekday which was surprising to me. Last time I walked into this place the girl at the front told me that they didn't have a sushi bar, which they did - so it might've still been post-pandemic time late 2022. I used to reside in Carmel Valley and recall there was a Sushiya there - good but pricey. I was alone for the evening so thought I would give this place another try. Where do I begin? Ambience - there is none. It almost felt like being in a supermarket. When sitting at the sushi bar, your back is to the rest of the patrons so you can't people watch. There are TVs at the sushi bar, but your seat is so far down you literally have to crack your neck to look up. The sushi guy has to look down at you. One waiter after another pulls up right next to you while you're trying to enjoy your meal - no one spot where they go to for pickups. Music playing had no appeal, I gathered it was country of some sort. Onto the food: house salad was fine, then ordered an unagi (fresh eel). I've been dining sushi for 30 years, and this might be the first time I've ever had cold unagi. I guess I'm used to when they bring out the flame and heat up the top, but there was none of that. I then waited quite a while for my meal, a baked salmon dish - and the waitress brings my bill. What..? My meal finally came, and yet another disappointment. The idea of 'baked' is that it should be cooked even if a little, and I didn't see a hint of that. The inside had that crab you can get at Vons for $3. Cold unagi, cold baked salmon.. at this point I just wanted to head home. The one plus is that the workers seemed pleasant enough, but you can tell they would prefer to be busier. Some marketing and dining overhaul would do this place a lot of good because location isn't that bad and Otay Ranch is hurting for quality dining spots. read more

Only rating 4/5 because it felt like something was missing to the taste, but nevertheless I wouldn't mind coming here again. I feel like that's not an option anymore unless you call a restaurant so I really like that I could do that. It seemed pretty busy inside on a Friday night. I went to eat with my husband and the hostess did not greet us. I asked if we could be seated for two people but we had our 2 month old with us. She looked down at the baby and asked with a disgusted face "and the baby?" I said "yes, but he doesn't eat food yet" so she just walked away to look for a place to seat us. She was away for a while and said "unfortunately we don't have a place to accommodate seating you guys with the baby, you can try the bar if you want?" This has been my go-to place for many many years. The service has always been great for me and the sushi is always delicious. Plenty of televisions inside incase you want to catch the game while you chow down. The interior is very spacious I feel and relaxing which is always a plus when eating. You won't have trouble finding something to eat here as they have plenty of choices. My go to menu items are the Alaskan Roll, Hawaiian Roll, Spanish Roll, and Albacore special Roll. I get these every time. Now for the customers that have been going here for a long time, but haven't been for a while....they no longer do 50% rolls when you dine in. I was saddened to learn this tonight. For so long that was a big plus. Being able to spend $50 and get 7 to 8 rolls for the table. It was something you just couldn't really get anywhere else. The food is legit. I'm usually happy with whatever I order. Today I tried to call in an order, and this is the second time that this has happened when I have been on hold for an extensive period of time. Today, all I wanted to order was a roll for my daughter and some edamame for me. So, today placed my order. I stayed on hold for over seven minutes and was already on my way to the spot and when I got to the location, there was no one there, and the girl who finally saw me when I was upfront, said oh yeah, you've been on hold for a really long time. Last time, it was over 15 minutes. They have got to come up with a better system instead of just answering the phone and putting people on hold.
