We decided to come here to celebrate a family member's recent fitness competition record setting and winning. We did not have a wait at all for our party of 5. We were immediately seated. It was nice because we saw an old family friend and her daughter dining next to us. What a great visit we had as well with them. We ordered 1 Sushi 60 piece boat, 2 Teriyaki Beef and Chicken plates, several other sushi servings, tempura fried vegetables, and all of the entrees came with miso soup or salad. Our food was delicious and the customer service is wonderful here. Our whole family had a wonderful experience. We did not that this is no longer "Hanaoka" but "Hanamichi" is the new name. NO more Hanaoka restaurant! This is the restaurant my family has been going to for as long as I can still recall getting the children's meals at Hanaoka. The quality of the food still tastes the same, which is especially great for my family! :) Our family always notices their excellent customer service. Plus having our orders are usually ordered correctly all the time. The only drawback is that I only wish there were a few more servers to make the orders go in faster. I always appreciate the attentive and friendly waitstaff! The ambiance is practically the same as Hanaoka had before! It's a cool, relaxed vibe throughout the entire restaurant. I think U.S. cities are already saturated with sushi now, but there are other Japanese food that are still harder to find. So I came here because I saw that their menu is slightly more extended, not for sushi. I got the spicy shoyu ramen and a oyakodon. They're both just okay. For the ramen, the noodles are good and the broth is spicier than I expected, which is good. However, I found the umami to be somewhat lacking. The consistency and contents feels thin, like they're afraid to add more seasoning/herbs to it that Americans will complain about. Can't taste any garlic, no scallions, no leaks, no cilantro, no kombu, no seeds, no menma, no egg, pretty much just flavored liquid with a dash of soy sauce and chili. It's got the textbook kamaboko, which seems to me more common in American-Japanese ramen than actual Japanese ramen. The meat is a bit too tough and lean. Similarly, for the oyakodon, the chicken is drier, tougher, and leaner than any oyakodon I would get in Japan. I want to say it's intentionally overcooked because Americans are paranoid about salmonella, so we think any chicken that's not overcooked is undercooked. The egg at least is fluffy enough, and the rice is pretty good, although I think it's also a tad dry, and makes me want some more donburi sauce of some kind. They do have sriracha, and it doesn't seem as watered down as some other joints in this area, but it's not the same as a rice bowl sauce. This joint is sort of a jack of all trades of Japanese food with the variety on their menu. It's not really possible to make this many different things at high quality and make a profit. I'd much prefer restaurants that specialize in one thing and try to make it better than everyone else. This probably reads like a very negative review, but I do want to like this place. The staff is actually Japanese, and the food and setup is more authentically Japanese compared to a lot of other places. Plus, their portions are pretty big for everything other than sushi. read more

A hidden gem in National City that's been here for years & one of my fav Sushi spots in the SouthBay. I use to come here in the 90's to eat Teriyaki Chicken, Yakisoba & Chicken Katsu meals which till this day is still very good. I haven't been here in about 15 years but my daughters have gone recently & told me I have to go especially because it's in my City & I love supporting my National City businesses. Well I went & I'm glad I did. The food I ate before is still very good & now I eat Sushi so I ordered Sushi & wow I was impressed, not only is it good but the rolls are fat. Portions here are big & affordable. I get one of the 3 Sushi Roll Specials that comes with Miso Soup which is also very good. You get to pick your 3 rolls & my fav is the Chula Vista Roll & Bonita Roll, I felt like a traitor that I liked those more then the National City Roll haha but I have to be honest tho the NC Roll was good too. Only a couple Cons, one the Sriracha Sauce they use is the Tabasco brand which I'm not a big fan of but it does the job, me & most people love & are use to the Tuong OT brand with the Rooster. Also the Garlic Edamame is ok, can use more garlic but other than that food here is very good. And I really love the customer service, from the guy calling us in to the waitress & the staff, they were all good, fast & friendly. My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place after going golfing across the street. I'm glad we stopped by to try it out for the first time. The customer service is amazing! The workers are so hard working and check in on you often! We got the lunch special bento box and 4 little sushi which is awesome to see! The lunch bento was so good with the different variety of meats and your choice of sashimi or fried fish! I like how you can order 4 pieces of sushi instead of the whole roll! The sushi is very overpriced but the portions of everything are large. Underwhelming food and decent customer service. We needed a booth and they immediately started clearing a booth table. The waitress was there as we were seated. We ordered both types of 'Boats' they offer, some spicy tuna which turned out to be to much for Karen so she ate some mild stuff off of my boat. I ordered a cold bottle of sake. It was very tasty. The sushi is very fresh and the employees are always friendly and fast! I've ate in and had take out as well and have never had any issues. This place has been a staple in National City for years and I just rediscovered it again and it brought back memories. I used to remember they used to have an area where you can actually take your shoes off and sit on the floor and have your meal that way. Their sushi boats are still epic here and I think worth the money and the amount of food that comes with it. The several times I've been here, they are always pretty busy. Some days, there is a line outside to get in. Please note that they do close from 3pm-5pm to prepare for the dinner menu. My favorite here is their teriyaki chicken, I think it's part nostalgia and also because it's just good. It is not too sweet and the chicken is cooked well. I also recently tried their stuffed jalapeno and it is bigger than other japanese places and stuffed with a lot of crab meat. SOOOO good! They have roll combos which has four rolls each of three different sushi rolls and my favorite is Combo F, which has Bonita, Chula Vista and Crunchy rolls. Perfect selection for me.
