Came on a weekend afternoon and it was pretty open so we got seated quickly. The space is super cute and comfortable with a big booth. We all got the sushi platter which came with 6 chef nigiri, a spicy tuna roll and either miso soup, salad or rice. They were kind enough to swap out the spicy tuna for eel for the kids. I wish I had too because the spicy tuna was suuuuper spicy. The fish was ok... I was surprised both kids didn't like their tuna because they LOVE tuna. I tried a bit and realized why - it was bland and odd like it was frozen - I didn't finish theirs either because i didn't care for it either. It was pretty busy around the time we went but we were seated pretty quickly. Our server was attentive in the first half our meal but kind of disappeared toward the end. My husband and I have been eating here more than a few times now because we live very close in the area and to be honest, Eastlake doesn't offer much in terms of a nice sit down restaurant, especially sushi. So each time we want to stay local, get quick service, and crave some quality sushi - we can rely on Ika! Our rolls always come out fresh, immaculate and fast. And we never had to complain about flavor or freshness. We always order our staples or order something new we haven't tried. Able to get a table right away and the service with the staff was incredible. Forgot our server's name but she was very attentive to make sure we are okay and if we needed anything. Got a few things on the menu: house salad, miso soup, pork gyoza was well fried, baked mussels was okay I felt that there was a lot of imitation crab, udon soup, lemon cilantro roll was very good love the freshness of the roll with the slice of lemon, and cherry blossom was amazing too with the topping of scallops. Very disappointing customer service. I called before driving over and specifically asked if there were seats available at the sushi bar. Gabriel answered the phone and told me there were six seats available. I arrived just a few minutes later and could clearly see two empty seats at the bar, but I was told there was no space. When I mentioned that I had just called and was told there were seats available, Gabriel responded that those seats were "about to be taken." That's not the same as being unavailable. If the seats were being held or reserved, that should have been explained over the phone instead of telling me they were available. I wasted my time driving there based on inaccurate information. A little honesty and better communication would have made all the difference. Unfortunately, this was a very poor first impression, and I hope the restaurant improves its customer service. read more

Pork Gyozas looked burnt and tasted burnt, which tasted very lack luster. I think most of the rolls tasted not as good compared to my other 2 other separate times where the food was excellent at the time. Out of everything, their pizza roll were really good and recommend getting this if you're here, but everything else was pretty disappointing. When we walked in, the waitress seated us right away! The server let us get settled in and we had gotten our drinks right away. He often checked on us as well. We stopped by on a Wednesday afternoon and I was shocked to see how busy it was. We got lucky we got the last table ! This place was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint . Second time coming to Ika Sushi and it was still just as awesome! I got my food so quick!! Rolls were delicious! All the servers were really nice and attentive. I opened my straw and had the wrapper on the table and the very next server who passed by asked if they could get the wrapper out of my way and cleared it. I've been here several times, and this visit once again confirmed why I keep coming back. The service was exceptional as always--friendly, welcoming, and professional. The restaurant was clean, the ambiance was comfortable, and the overall vibe was consistent with previous visits. If you enjoy Suke, I highly recommend trying the Peach Suki--it's one of the most flavorful ones out there. We definitely went through a few bottles with the group! Everyone ordered different dishes, and once again, the food quality was excellent--fresh, delicious, and well-prepared. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in what they serve. The only downside this time was the inconsistency in how the food came out. Some guests got both their first and second dishes before others even received their first. It was a bit awkward for those who had to wait significantly longer. I did notice a few new staff members, so this could be part of the growing pains with new team members getting up to speed. Suggestion: For larger groups, it might be helpful to hold back the first few dishes and bring them out together so everyone can enjoy their meal at the same time. For smaller groups, it's totally fine to stagger the sushi, since sharing is part of the fun. Despite the minor hiccup, I'll definitely be back. I go to Ika Sushi probably once every 2 months. I love going here for the protein roll (no rice) because it has so much flavor and protein. They always give exceptional sushi and service! The price shows that the quality of sushi is quite delicious. I still have yet to try more items on the menu! The ambiance is very casual, and they even expanded their restaurant from their old location which was just 2 stores down. This place would be great for groups of 6 or less. However if you want to seat more, you might be separated. Restrooms are always clean too, which is a plus for me! read more

2.5 stars for this particular visit. The food, honestly, is 4/5 but the service in the beginning was just so odd I feel the need to knock it down. Odd experience 1: I get there at 8:10, the hostess tells me "you might not get seated as the kitchen closes at 8:30" like, what? The restaurant closes at 9pm... I've never heard of a Japanese restaurant closing early when it's busy, literally we live in Japantown and we would never be greeted with that type of behavior. Odd experience 2: I asked about the MP prices for their specials and if it was nigiri / sashimi price, and she had to double check if that's what that was? I imagine if you work at a restaurant, you would know what's on the menu. I understand maybe those specials aren't that popular but at least be aware. Odd experience 3: Feeling rushed to order like we're inconveniencing them. First of all, you walk in and the GM greets you! You don't find that in many restaurants, usually you're only greeted by an hostess/host. If the GM is present that means something good is happening here!!! The food is amazing, the ambience is outstanding and the freaking chefs behind the bar a second to none. Chef Johnny, funny thing is, he's a Boricua, since when do you have a Boricua doing Sushi?! And Chef Oscar, well Chef Oscar pretends to be French but he's American Mexican, or is Mexican-American. This is now my favorite sushi spot in Chula Vista. The first time I tried it was two weeks ago when my sister ordered chicken/shrimp hibachi and a salmon teriyaki bowl through UberEats. Ever since then, we have had two more food deliveries from them, and I even dined at the restaurant this past week. To my surprise, when I went on a Monday night around 7:15pm, almost every single table was occupied. Luckily, my group of three was able to be seated within minutes. Everything that I have tried from Ika has been a 10/10, with the exception of the chicken/shrimp hibachi. The fried rice and shrimp were flavorful, but the chicken was on the dry side. Aside from that, amazing! The salmon teriyaki bowl is a fan favorite in my household. The salmon is always cooked to perfection and the sauce that it's cooked with (and used on the vegetables and rice) is perfect and not too sweet like other places. I think their ahi tuna tostadas are my favorite dish they have. It has a little bit of heat to it, and they really pack on the tuna. I feel like I got more tuna when I ordered via UberEats versus in person, but I think it is the restaurant being generous for their online orders. Their steak teriyaki bowl, gyoza, sashimi/nigiri and sushi rolls I have tried have all been a hit. I have no complaints when it comes to the quality of the food. When I dined in, the sushi took a little while to get to the table, likely because it was pretty packed. Our waitress was really sweet, but towards the end (since it was later in the evening), I think she was focused more on cleaning because my friends ran out of water and we were waiting a good minute for the bill. This has to be one of my favorite sushi spots I've tried lately! The baja hand roll is usually my go-to but I decided this time to try it as a full roll and it did not disappoint. I also ordered shrimp tempura and a California roll maki style. I love when rolls have the seaweed on the outside. Everything was delicious! The restaurant is like any other restaurant honestly, I'd feel comfortable to come here dressed however as thigh place isn't "high end" but it also does not give off "hole in the wall" vibes at all. Service: so we dined here once and honestly ...never again. The service was so bad. Other people that were seated way after us got their food before us. We never got refills despite asking for them multiple times and we were never checked on. We literally had to go to the front to just pay and leave. So of course we did NOT leave a tip. From then on we have just been ordering to go by calling in. I wish it would've been a different experience.
