The positive - the samurai roll ($17) was tasty as was the gyoza. While the service was fine, the food didn't meet my expectations. The chirashi bowl ($18.50) was the smallest portion I've received compared to other sushi restaurants, and it didn't feel like a good value. The sashimi was sliced extremely thin, and unfortunately it didn't taste as fresh as I expected. The teriyaki chicken bento had a large portion of rice, the chicken not so much and lacked the flavor I would expect from a Japanese restaurant. Overall, I was hoping for higher-quality food and more generous portions. My previous visit here was last year with their AYCE menu which they no longer have. I am giving them 3 stars because our area need sushi places and I'm going to give this place a benefit of the doubt that it was just a bad day. read more

Another brisk Chula Vista evening. Another mini adventure looking for what to eat after a hard workout. The couple that exercises together...gets rather hungry post workout & needs protein immediately! At the behest of my better half, we went with sushi. Healthy, happy, hungry! This little hole in the wall (and I say it with all the sincerity of Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin) with its cozy booths was perfect. We started with the Monkey Balls, tasty appetizer if you like mounds of cream cheese & spicy tuna shoved into a mushroom fried deeper than Anakin on Mustafar! My GF suggested the salmon nigiri. Note to my peeps: NOT a fan of salmon, like ever in my life! She says "Try it raw, much different." I guess I like salmon now, but only raw, like a lion...who eats sushi. Am I Alex from Madagascar?! Stunned me like the low setting on a Federation phaser! She's the Trinity to my Neo. I ordered the Amazing Dragon roll, which was as Amazing as Peter Parker himself! (Side note: Andrew Garfield deserves far better praise for that role! Give him his 3rd film!!!) When I tell you this roll kicks, it'll knock you into next week and ask you "Who's the master?!" To which you immediately yell, "I AM!" and proceed to devour that roll! Sadly, no glow sans the one radiating from my lovely dinner companion. Tried to eat with my family for lunch on a Saturday. They weren't busy. Our 6 year old won't eat this type of food. We had just stopped by the nearby mall and brought a bag of Wetzel Bits, so we could still all eat together. We were barely seated when the server said we weren't allowed to bring "outside food", so we left. I'd understand if we brought in a lot of food from somewhere else, but it was a bag of pretzel bits for a child. We had every intention of ordering most of our food from this place. I have love this spot for affordable sushi, and good quality fish. Salmon, consistent, and so good however, the tuna is a little questionable. They have an all you can eat, options that I have not tried yet but eager to try soon. This has been my go to spot for quick sushi when I'm in the area. Do not order off the app, even if they never pick up the phone. Ordered thru the app thinking it would be fine, app says 23 min when I complete order. Open the app on the way and see that it is now an hour later from when I ordered. No biggie, get a beer while I'm waiting but start to see people show up and get seated, order their food, and have their food brought to table before my order. That's strange. No concern for the order that were placed well before. Had high hopes for this place, guess will find another spot. Update: after finally getting my order I checked the two edamame orders that were ready when I arrived. They let them sit there and get cold from the 40 min wait. We ordered the; samurai roll, Philadelphia roll, combination nigiri, and the beef plate for our one year old. We loved everything!! Our favorite roll was the samurai. The food was super tasty and better than I expected. One thing they can work on is putting less rice in the rolls. We felt like some of them had too much rice and less fresh fish. Sushi is fresh, and they have great customer service. We were greeted right away when we walked in. We were able to choose our spot to seat and we chose la booth next to the side door in the main dining room. Our host took our drink orders and answered any questions that we had about what beers they had. Nice and courteous host. Our server took our order and was very customer service oriented. We ordered Tongkatsu ramen with side of Salmon Maki roll, 2 Tempura Shrimp Crunchy Rolls, A Spanish Roll, and a California Roll with no cucumber (allergy). We were offered wasabi & ginger and it came to the table as a shared condiment. Sushi was VERY good. Fish was fresh and flavors were all great. The Spanish Roll was DELICIOUS! We moved to the area 3 yrs ago. We are not sushi fanatics but found this little place and for the price it was great. We've come 5 times so far this year and we've noticed that some things have changed. My wife gets the crunchy roll eveytime but recently they've replaced the panko bread crumbs with these rice crispy looking things. It's definitely not as good with this change. Today we came in and ordered the teriyaki beef bowl and to our surprise, it now came with sliced beef which did not look appealing at all. One negative, they really need to fix their bathroom. Their urinal has been broken for YEARS. I don't know how you can run a business that long and not fix it. I was hesitant to eat at Kaiyo due to the amount of negative reviews on Yelp. After 2 visits, I can say that the negative, low star reviews aren't an accurate representation of this location. I was initially intrigued by the menu. It's not often that I find ramen/sushi places that offer substantial veggie sushi and veggie ramen. The atmosphere is very casual, located in a shopping center next to a Happy Lemon and Los Panchos. It's clean inside and has a good amount of seating for dine in. The servers are attentive which I appreciate. I will also mention they are straight to the point in terms of hospitality. Not necessarily a negative, but maybe what some negative reviews are referencing? Between the two visits, I tried: the veggie tempura appetizer, the potato croquette appetizer, the atomic veggie ramen, a veggie tempura roll, an avocado roll, and inari. Overall, the food is good. The Tempura and croquettes came out hot and crispy. The Tempura sauce to me didn't have much taste, but my husband says otherwise. All the sushi had a good rice to filling ratio, which I feel tends to be off in vegetable rolls. The veggie ramen is served In a vegan Kombu broth with fried tofu. The tofu is fried then sliced vs the other way around. This causes it to fall apart a little in the ramen but the flavor is still there. The ramen is spicy for sure, and this is coming from someone who revels in spicy flavors. My husband had the miso ramen and the chashu bowl, both of which he enjoyed. I think that if you are in the area and don't want to drive to convoy or downtown, this place is definitely worth a shot! read more

I figured I would try another sushi spot this week having a sushi fix. I normally go to Suhshiya down the street. The downside of this place is it is by In N Out burgers. Expect that parking lot to be packed trying to get to this spot. I'd recommend parking further away and hiking it. You might save yourself a head ache. Speaking of...I ordered ahead on Uber Eats with an ETA of 25 minutes to pick up. I got here with 3 minutes to spare and the clock changed to another 15 minute wait. When I got the notification my order was ready for pick up the staff told me it would still be a few minutes. Overall after waiting about 25 minutes my order was ready. I don't know where the disconnect is with the app saying it's ready and the staff saying it wasn't. A bit disappointed with the wait time. Sushi was decent enough but I think I will stick to Sushiya. read more
