One of the latest poke places on Bellaire. Located in Chinatown near Sinh Sinh. Spacious parking and usually this place isn't too packed except maybe around lunch time. The inside isn't too big with a good amount of tables to sit. There are two sizes to pick from, 3 scoops or 5 scoops of proteins. The 5 scoops size can be equivalent to two meals for me so 3 scoops should be sufficient. The base includes salad, white rice, or brown rice. You can also choose the half and half for the base. My go-to proteins are the octopus, salmon, and unagi. I especially like their octopus because it has a crunchy taste, different from what I had before. In addition, they also have your usual poke toppings, a lot of variety you can choose from. With your order also come with a bowl of miso soup. I'm not a fan of the miso soup because the broth has a bit of a watery taste. This place is self-served. You can get your utensils and water on the right side of the cashier and the miso soup will be given to you once you're seated. Overall, friendly service from the staff. Not much can be said since it's a self-served place. Nice atmosphere since it is usually not crowded. A good lunch spot to grab poke if you're in the area. I wanted sushi but the others in my group didn't, so I surrendered, but I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that eating poke is pretty much like eating a decomposed sushi roll. The regular option is 3 scoops of your base for $10.99, and you can mix & match the bases and proteins. The toppings are unlimited, as well. I ordered a bowl with a sushi rice base, & I selected crab meat as the protein. With that I ordered cucumber, avocado, green onion, kimchi, carrots, and spicy mayo sauce. He suggested also throwing in their house spicy soy sauce as it's a popular choice with spicy mayo, so I said go for it! All of the aforementioned still came out to $10.99 which I thought was awesome. On top of that, I sat down and they delivered miso soup to us, which was when we found out that it's complimentary. I have been dying to try Okome Don, but since is the "Year of Take Out", I put trying it out on hold since I always believed raw fish should be eaten fresh. Indeed, I am glad I waited until this moment. First off, I have to say that I am happy to see that poke restaurants are so on trend. Back in 2010, when I traveled to Hawaii, I remember going to one of their famous poke spots and wishing that poke was in Houston. Now you can't escape poke! Okome Don is set up just like most poke spots in city. The restaurant is clean and more minimalistic but contemporary. It's a Chipotle style concept where you get in line and load up your bowl as you please. For approximately $14, you get 5 scoops of fish. I chose fresh tuna, albacore tuna, salmon, unagi, and yellowtail on a bed of spring mix and brown rice. I was then able to add in all sorts of veggies. Thank goodness they don't charge extra for avocado here! That's a huge plus! I load my bowl with avocado, green onion, red onion, edamame, carrots, cucumbers, seaweed salad, and fried onion. It was tossed with spicy mayo and soy sauce. As I sat down, a waiter came to my table and offered me complimentary miso soup. It was a nice gesture on this cold day. As I took my first bite, so many warm and pleasant memories of my time in Hawaii came rushing back. The fish and veggies were incredibly fresh! I have been wanting to try this place and finally made it! They do not have pre-created options here and everyone has to make their own bowl. I like the set up and how simple it is, if you don't get it from the numbered steps on the wall in front of you, the stations transition simply and similar to that of a chipotle. I opted for a half and half brown and Sushi rice which was a different type of brown rice than I was used to but still really good. I was almost confused that I had only received Sushi rice. The fish was fresh and the portions a pretty decent size. The staff is friendly and accommodating and we got complimentary miso soup. The miso soup to me was a bit bland and could have used more miso. We also got musubi which was ok. The only issue I have is that I wish the tobiko and masago was transferred to the add ons station rather than considered a protein and at the protein station. I also wish they had more spicy options like jalapeños or made their spicy sauces a bit spicier since I got spicy mayo and spicy ponzu and neither one brought a kick. They do not have as many add on options as pokii eatery or diced poke but they have avocado at no extra charge as well as tofu and tamago add ins which I do not normally see. If Okome Don weren't miles away in Asiatown, I would probably eat there until I OD'ed on OD. By my estimation, probably the best poke in Houston, scoring highly in terms of both quality and value. For evidence of its supremacy among peers, look no further than its unreal protein selection: albacore, shrimp, salmon, scallop, red snapper, octopus, tuna, yellowtail, tobiko, crab meat, eel, surf clams. Okome Don is basically a poke joint with the heart of a sushi restaurant. I ordered a large bowl (5 scoops!) with hamachi, salmon, scallop, tuna, and unagi over spring mix salad, with a bunch of fixings including avocado, seaweed salad, pickled ginger, tofu, and tamago (sweet egg). For sauce, I went with house recommendation, which was a creamy, sweet, and savory mix with a hint of spice. I loved that it was flavorful but not overpowering. The yellowtail was by far my favorite, luscious and flavorful, with the salmon and fresh-and-potent scallops slotting in next. The eel had great taste but was surprisingly chewy and springy in terms of mouthfeel. The spring mix salad was acceptable, although I could have done without the fibrous stalks of kale. I hate kale with a vengeance. Rice is probably the move. In terms of value, you won't find a better bowl of poke in town. Less than $14 for 5 whopping scoops and FREE avocado - need I say more? Delicious poke option when you're in Chinatown and craving poke or sushi. I had the regular bowl half and half(sushi rice and salad) with tuna, salmon, and eel. Compared to other poke places, I thought the protein options were kind of limited. I wish they had a spicy tuna option. However, my protein picks were fresh and delicious, so I didn't deduct any points for that. The vegetable choices were awesome. No upcharge for avocado is what made the difference between this place being a 4 star or 5 star. You also get a free miso. It didn't have much in it, but it was free and tasty so I'm not complaining. The guy at the counter who made my bowl was super nice and explained every step thoroughly. I definitely appreciated that. The regular sized bowl was like $11ish, pricier than most other places but hey offer 3 scoops of protein instead of the normal 2 scoops like others. The downside is the minuscule scooping...I got two scoops of salmon and one scoop of unagi which I was most excited about. Most other places don't offer unagi. The avocado is also not an extra $1 which every other places does. The workers were nice and the atmosphere is very modern. The salmon was good and the unagi is very good. My only complaint is that the scoops were so small. If I'm paying $11 for just a regular sized bowl I'd take two big scoops over three small scoops any day. read more
