Came here a long time ago bc I heard how good their sushi sets are. If you are a sushi lover and want something homey you will definitely like Okonomi. It's nonfussy, and although not the cheapest sushi, it's definitely not super expensive/omakase level. It's a small space with a giant bar for seating and maybe a few tables - the owners are definitely passionate about Japanese cuisine and you can definitely feel that as you chat with them a bit. The menu is small, but dedicated to quality, and you will make your choice quite quickly. All the fish was fresh, large pieces, and really really clean tasting. I want to start this off with how I loved how laid back this spot is. It only seats about 15 people. Music was on very low. Was able to speak to my wife softly (love a restaurant that's quiet!) The server & cook were great. The waiter was kind and check on us in a timely manner. The food was amazing. Was able to snag a last minute reservation at the Williamsburg Okonomi location. They specialize in Japanese breakfast (their other location does ramen) (the breakfast is also the only thing in the menu). It comes with rice, a fish of choice which for when I came was a kimchi mackerel or miso salmon, miso soup, an egg custard, and an assortment of vegetables. The sashimi plate was such a star for me. The fish was high quality and it was a refreshing way to start the meal. I enjoyed the Japanese breakfast components. The egg custard was my biggest highlight, slightly sweet and the texture was fun. The vegetables were all cooked well with the squash being a standout for me. My fish was a little overcooked, but my friend told me she's been before and it was perfect. The rice also had I think fish flakes and nori on it which made it a perfect addition for the fish. I loved the vibe of this spot. It's a small place that's super easy to miss. This cute little hole on the wall was a perfect savory breakfast! I stopped by on a friday morning and called to see if they had any availability for a walk in, to which they did! Seating is limited with a couple tables and some bar seating, so would try and book a Resy unless you are going solo and don't mind sitting at the bar. We came for brunch and ordered the Ichiju Sansai set which comes with your choice of one of the two roasted fish of the day, rice, miso soup, tamagoyaki, tsukemono, and veggies. It may not look like a lot at first, but it's very filling. Both my friend and I were full by the end, and I barely finished my set. I love tea, so I really enjoyed the way they serve it: beautiful (I think ceramic) cups, each with a unique pattern, and tea steeped right at the table. This breakfast set was exactly what I was looking for recently after having a weekend of really heavy sweets and American food. The breakfast set at 9pm (around $30+) really is all about restraint, moderation, and just-right proportions of everything in balance. Fish was nicely roasted; egg was perfectly custardy; and the honey-mustard-y sauce on the side was a stand out pungent flavor on that plate. Service was excellent; we weren't able to get a reservation and called last-minute and they were able to squeeze us in for the last meal, but did not feel rushed in any way. Really appreciative of the staff for contributing to a positive experience. About a 1-1.5: Unfortunately, our most recent experience with Okonomi was disappointing. My sister and I came here for their ichiju sansai, which is a traditional style of a Japanese set meal. It comes with a bowl of seven-grain rice served with miso soup, a piece of roasted fish (your choice of of the fish prepared in shio yaki (salt-roasted), saikyo miso (sweet miso), sake kasu (sake lees), or kombu jime (dry kelp cured)), fresh stack of sliced veggies, blanched broccolini leaves with a tiny scoop of shira-ae (mashed tofu pureed with dashi, topped with sesame seeds), and a cube of an omelet egg (made with soy milk, dashi, white soy, and some sugar, baked until a little yellow on top). You can also add an onsen egg, which is a floating egg in a sauce of sake and soy, topped with some shichimi togarashi. We opted for the saikyo miso for the fish, but this was extremely fish in its odor and taste, so we knew it just was not fresh. It was pretty inedible. The miso soup seemed a bit watered down. Rice could have been better prepared, as it was more in a 'wet' state; one of my biggest pet peeves is when rice is not cooked properly! In addition, the anticipated onsen egg, which I really enjoyed previously, was disappointing, as it was not flavorful at all. Staff were fine, but I feel that the previous team was better in terms of creating a delicious meal. Note that before, gratuity is not accepted, but they do now. My only minor qualm was the fish was a bit small in size, but aside from that everything was great. Restaurant is very small and intimate. Definitely not good for bigger groups. There are only 2 workers, including the cooks (to give a sense of just how small the place is). Food wise, I got the Large Set with salmon (they had two fish options that I think change depending on the day). Large set was the perfect size, so if you're hungry definitely get this. We were lucky enough to get seats at 1pm without any reservation on Saturday. Any later by 10 minutes we would have been turned away. I didn't realize it was only one set menu, so we both had the standard set for $30. The difference between the standard and the upgraded one is an $8 difference for two extra veggie options. We also ordered the ikura and poached egg add ons. They were both reasonably priced at $5 and $2.50 extra. There was complimentary loose leaf tea already pre assembled at the table and you can steep to your liking. Overall the food was perfectly balanced. Not overwhelming with flavor but had just the right amount of seasoning. The fish we had was the mackerel - surprisingly done very well that there was barely any fishy taste. Food - if you like heavy Asian breakfasts- rice, egg, soup, vegetables, white fish and all, it truly cannot get any better than this. The umami of all the flavors combined leave you satisfied. It feels like I transported to Japan. The balance of all of it is perfect. Ambiance - it's super tiny with only 10 patrons allowed at a time I believe. i've been to okonomi's sister location (lorimer) in kyoto, japan so i came in with high expectations of a beautiful and hearty breakfast set experience -- okonomi definitely meets this standard! while lorimer has a two floor venue, okonomi is very small and initimate with a row of bar seats and two tables. the two-person staff is very kind and welcoming, with the server being very patient and willing to walk through any questions regarding the fish selection, seasonal vegetables, recommendations -- really anything of the menu. i came on a monday morning at 10:30 am with a reservation for 1, which i'd recommend. sometimes the place has many empty seats for walk-in like when i went this time around, other days you'd be surprised by the occupancy and the wait time even for a solo diner. i ordered the smaller set with the mackerel as my fish of choice. the food doesn't look like a lot but it is very filling, even with the small set. while of course the price here is more expensive compared to its counterpart in japan, okonomi is definitely worth the visit if you want to skip the plane ticket and experience this cozy breakfast set right in nyc. read more

I came for lunch on Saturday for their breakfast menu and I got the larger set (there are only two options) which comes with two extra vegetables, which I thought was worth it if you are deciding between that and the standard. Today, the fish options were swordfish and mackerel - I would recommend the latter if those are your options since the swordfish was too dense for me. The vegetables were all delicious - I had what seemed like brocollini in a wasabi miso sauce, pickled radish and apples in a yuzu marinade, a squash with some soy/sesame paste, and egg tart-like side, and miso soup. Would recommend getting the onsen egg addition to add to your rice as well. The food was delicious, the staff was super nice, and the space was so intimate and cute. Found this place on social media and needed to give it a try! I was attracted to the clean and fresh look of the dishes. This craving came suddenly so I just walked in without a reservation, and was seated with 15 minutes! I think I got lucky coming in on a Wednesday afternoon during lunch time haha. LOVED my experience at Okonomi!! I made a reservation around a week and a half in advance and was super excited for the Japanese breakfast. The restaurant is very intimate and cozy. There are four bar-style seats in front of the open kitchen and two additional tables for four. Our meals were perfect, and the presentation was also superb. They were sold out of the fish collar option (our reservation was at 1:30pm), so if you're hoping to try that, you would need to snag an earlier reservation. I'm not normally a tea person, but the hojicha they provide was so fragrant and wonderful with the meal. The fish of the day was a miso-glazed swordfish-- it was AMAZING!! The fish was very buttery, yet didn't feel overly heavy. We had pickled radish, cucumber, and a tamagoyaki for our sides. The tamagoyaki was PERFECT. It was so smooth and custardy. We had the onsen egg and ikura add-ons as well, and they paired perfectly with the rice. One qualm I had was that the rice was a bit soggy, but it was still enjoyable. The miso soup was great as well! I felt like the three-side set (Sansai) was the perfect light breakfast. Service was also a 10/10. It's such a small space that it can be hard to get in sometimes. I've never had such a beautifully plated set menu offering. It comes with whatever fish is on special that day, rice, egg, some veggies and soup. I just loved every bit of it, delectaly laid together and lightly delicious. Fantastic spot. I first learned about Okonomi when walking around the neighborhood and stopping inside to ask about the place. You must get a reservation well in advance, as the restaurant only seats a few tables at a time!! The menu changes but some items remain the same throughout the year. The tunakotsu was a first for me, as I have never had fish-based ramen. The texture of the tuna was almost identical to chasu pork, and I was also impressed with the flavor of the broth. I highly recommend making a reservation beforehand because it is a pretty small place and a table will probably not open up any time soon as it takes time to dine here. For brunch, there is only the same set, but just standard and large sets. The large set contains 3 additional seasonal veggies while the standard set only has one extra. We were given hot tea (they give refills if you want more) while we waited for our food. When the food came out, I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful plating! The portions look small but you do get full from it, if you eat everything. I highly recommend ordering one of the add-ons because it could really enhance your meal. The fish was one of the best that I ate, and I loved every bite of it. I got the large set but wasn't a fan of most of the side dishes, so I probably could have gone with the Standard Set and been satisfied. The miso soup was a little different from what I've had in the past, but after couple bites it balances the flavors of the side dishes, fish, and rice, so it worked out. First visit: lunch- Very americanized inside (lofi/r&b music to set the chill mood) and just overall vibe. Although everything was absolutely delicious my fish option, tuna belly, was not to my liking. It was quite tough and I could have sworn it was swordfish. This time it was trance (or whatever people call that now). Again not complaining at all since I like the music. The starters were the best part of the meal, in my opinion. I could have just eating a few more starters and I would have been satisfied. My uni mazemen, although decadent and clearly the best alternative to a heavy carbonara, was just ok. The uni was fresh but didn't pack that drool inducing punch that they normally do. But with the help of the miso it made quite a lovely dish (could have used less vinegar in the pickled carrots). My partner liked their ramen but didn't love it as they left their broth nearly untouched (they are the kind to slurp it all down) and only ate the noodles and fixings. I didn't care for the fish that accompanied the ramen, which I can't recall the name of, as it was a bit dry (similar to an over cooked piece of beef, in flavor and texture). Overall I can't wait to make this my (ir)regular brekkie spot (it's hard to get reservations for days/time slots you might want and it's pricy). The meal brought me straight back to Japan, I really missed having miso soup, roasted fish and veggies for breakfast. The complimentary matcha tea is so good, warmed my soul. I enjoyed sitting at the bar seating so that you can see the chefs working. Overall, imo the presentation and authenticity was worth the price of $30 (to add 2 vegetables the price is now $38 not $35 as listed on the website). Personally, I didn't really feel the $8 is worth the 2 vegetables - but one of us ordered each so we were able to try all of it. They also offered 2 different fish so we opted to try one of each - both were roasted well with flaking fish and the other tasted buttery, reminded me of chilean sea bass. I enjoyed my experience, but I probably wouldn't come back unless I was really craving a trip back to Japan without going to Japan - it's only the price point was a bit high for us, but we get it- New York!
