The tables are crammed together very closely, so this is not a place for intimate conversations. Noise level is looooud, especially on the main floor. If you want a bit more quiet, ask to be seated in the basement area, which feels isolated, but at least your ears will thank you. Food was okay. Nothing stood out to us and we tried over ten menu items. Most dishes are spicy, so clarify how much spice you can handle, because I burned my mouth on practically every dish we got. Taiwanese Pork Jowl was the best dish out of everything we ordered--this I would get again. Recommend. Handmade Chili Oil Wontons were just okay. Sacha Hot Honey Popcorn Chicken was too spicy and the breading was hard as a rock. Too much breading, too little chicken. Pickled Cucumber Salad was a let down. Skip. Peashoots w/ Tofu Skin was dissapointing and watered down. No taste. FenZheng Pork--Spare Ribs, Kabocha Squash, Tianmianjiang was the worst dish we've ever had at a restaurant. I was able to walk-in right away and get seated. SM in the chicken dish stands for soy milk and it was definitely something I was able to taste. The portion size was pretty decent but I did had two issues with the dish. The dish was more of a Sichuan/Mala type of seasoning rather than something you expect to see from Taiwanese fried chicken. I did wish they use that kind of seasoning instead. With such a big portion of chicken, I also wish they had more of a variety of dark and white meat, as I had mostly white. I also ordered their minced pork over rice and their beef noodle soups - two classic Taiwanese dishes. I actually ended up enjoying Wenwen's take on the two dishes more than the chicken! Came here during a snowstorm because I was so confident in loving it! However, the BDSM Chicken Sandwich + Tater Tots was unfortunately overpriced and underwhelming. To be fair, the food isn't bad at all. The chicken is fried well, crispy on the outside while tender inside. The tater tots are also crunchy like a tater tot should be. But for $24 price tag, there's nothing special here at all. The chicken sandwich itself is very small (literally about the size of my palm). It has a savory popcorn-chicken style seasoning, but it's not bold enough at all. It also has "spicy sauce" on it but it pretty much tastes like Kewpie and is not spicy in the slightest. Worst part is that the rest of the plate (about 2/3 of it!) is just plain tater tots with regular ketchup. There was no seasoning, no special sauce, no twist; just standard tots. Overall, it's fine food, it's just not worth the price nor trekking out during a snowstorm for (though the latter point may just be me). At that price point, I expected something more filling, flavorful, or memorable. Service was knowledgeable and friendly and they played nice old school Chinese songs. This being said, I've eaten food at Shanghai You Garden, Nan Xiang, Din Tai Fung, New World Mall Food Court, Noode Village, 1915 Lanzhou Noodles, etc... and they were delicious, but sometimes some of these places felt like they were being mass produced at fast speeds or food was sloppily put together - no love and care behind each individual dish if that makes sense. The sauce it comes with is also delicious. Savory soy milk - this is like a fresh soft tofu soup with chili oil, pickled veg, and fried you tiao. It's one of the relatively subtler, comforting dishes. The you tiao added a nice crunch to cut through all the soft textures, and also were like little flavor explosions as they absorbed the soup. Tater tot dan bing - nice and hearty, with crispy tater tots, eggs, and cheese. The dipping sauce is sweet, sour, and spicy.
