Kaew Jai Jorm is definitely one of the more elevated Thai dining experiences in Williamsburg. From what I understand, the menu is inspired by the kind of traditional cuisine once prepared for Thai royalty, and the entire experience--from the presentation to the tableware and décor--really leans into that. The ambiance is beautiful and genuinely makes you feel transported to Thailand. We started with the Royal Dumplings, which were almost too pretty to eat. They came in this gorgeous purple color and were delicious, although a little pricey considering you only get five and quite small. I honestly couldn't quite place everything in the filling, but I picked up something savory that reminded me of fish sauce along with a slightly nutty texture. The pomelo salad was another highlight--very fresh, beautifully presented, and refreshing. We also ordered the unripe green mango with fish sauce, Thai chilies, and shallots. I especially loved this because it's very familiar to me from Vietnamese cuisine as well. Vietnamese people love crunchy green mango with shrimp salt, fish sauce, or a spicy fish sauce mixture, so this immediately reminded me of flavors I grew up around and enjoy. For our entrées, we ordered the Thai basil beef and Panang curry beef. Both were flavorful and satisfying. I also loved the rice service! The rice comes out in a beautiful engraved silver bowl, and they'll spoon more onto your plate when you request it. It's a small detail, but it really adds to the elevated experience. Unfortunately, dessert was the only one disappointment. We ordered the Thai gnocchi for $16, and the gnocchi themselves were noticeably overcooked. The coconut sauce was actually very good, especially with the shredded coconut and sesame seeds, so the flavors were there, but the texture of the gnocchi really brought the dish down. At $16, I expected it to be executed better. Hopefully I hope ownership sees this because I would absolutely order it again if the texture were improved and chewy--the rest of the dessert had a lot of potential. We also had the pandan lemongrass drink, which was refreshing and especially nice on a hot day. One warning: this is probably NOT the restaurant for someone who can't handle spice! My partner and I both have a pretty high spice tolerance. For reference, I happily eat whole Thai chili peppers and Calabrian chilies, and I put red pepper flakes or Thai chilli / Srircha on almost everything. So when I say the food here can be spicy, take that seriously! Authentic Thai food can pack a lot more heat than the more Americanized Thai food many people are accustomed to, where the flavors can lean more toward sour with relatively mild heat. This also isn't an inexpensive meal. Everything came out to around $150, so I see Kaew Jai Jorm as more of an occasional indulgence rather than an everyday Thai spot. It would be perfect for a date night, Valentine's Day dinner, anniversary, or just when you want something a little more special. Despite the dessert miss, I definitely plan on returning. The atmosphere, beautiful presentation, bold flavors, and attention to detail make Jaojor Kor feel like much more of an experience than your typical neighborhood Thai restaurant. read more

I came here for a birthday without knowing much about the restaurant beforehand and left happy with the meal, even if nothing quite stood out as unforgettable. After seeing this on Beli's list of top thai restaurants in the city, I decided to make a visit! I made a reservation for the patio since there weren't anymore available for the dining room. Although the patio is covered and there are fans, I would not recommend dining there if it is hot outside and definitely not if it's raining. We ordered the chor muang (purple dumplings), gaeng pu (softshell crab curry), crying tiger steak, and royal pad thai to share amongst three people. We had some food left over and probably could've done without the pad thai since they offer refillable rice. Although the chor muang were very photogenic, we weren't impressed by the filling, which was sweet and savory with a peanut sauce. The gaeng pu however was delicious and I enjoyed my first softshell crab. The crying tiger steak was flavorful but i've had better crying tiger elsewhere as i found this one to be a bit chewy. This is what was worth the price khao pad kra pow nuea yang which was the steak dish. I initially wanted crying tiger but after seeing the price I went with that instead and let me tell you no regrets. Everything was very flavorful and there were no misses. I think the pomelo salad and the crab curry were standouts to me. The seafood sautee and the pad kea mao Talay were very similar so I wouldn't get the both of them again. I'd also personally pass on the duck breast as I enjoyed the seafood more but that's more of a personal preference. Also got sticky rice for dessert which was good but not standout. Had reservations for 5:30 Saturday. Arrived at 5:45 (called ahead to make sure our table was held) and were told we have to vacate our table before 7pm for the next reservation. Very dismissive staff. Maybe this was a bad day. Felt off right away. Not the kind of hospitality that we were hoping for... Were seated in the outside tent. Freezing despite some heat lamps. Not cozy or comfortable at all. Everyone was complaining how cold it was. I couldn't relax and be comfortable. Not a pleasant experience. Service was off that night. Waiters were super frazzled and everyone's water glasses remained empty and plates remained bare of rice, which was supposed to flow abundantly. Indoor seating is tiny. We were sat in a tent, with heat lamps that didn't make a dent in how uncomfortable we were. All the visitors around us kept their coats on and were also complaining of the cold. This was horribly reminiscent of Covid days, when you had to freeze outside and watch your food congeal into ice before your eyes. Not for winter months! My teeth couldn't stop chattering. This was brutal. Almost all the picnic style tables in the tent were communal style dining. We were sharing a table with strangers. Very awkward. Makes for a very uncomfortable experience, as you're eating with strangers who are mere inches away from you. Forget about any kind of conversation that won't be accompanied by awkward facial reactions from strangers. It took a while for our food to be delivered. Everything was delicious. The spices reminded me of my recent trip to Thailand--definitely the food in this restaurant is authentic & reminiscent of good quality local dishes. $30 hor mok pu was underwhelming. Tiny portion of crab meat beaten with egg and turned into a custard like substance. Was expecting more out of this. Too spicy--didn't feel any flavor here other than overpowering spice. $35 gaeng poo (soft shell crab in coconut curry) was delicious. Rich and creamy coconut curry. This was so spicy. We were crying and our sinuses cleared up. Make sure you're aware of the spice level or ask to make it milder. $35 tamarind duck breast melted on the tongue. Spectacular! Wish the portion was larger for such price. Two ducks breasts? Wishful thinking. Overall, I would give this another try in warm weather. The food was delicious. Came here with a large party recently and their food was delicious! I ordered the gaeng puu which was delicious with their rice which they scoop right onto your plate. The crab was soft, the curry sooooo flavorful. Their appetizer chicken skewers were flavorful, but a little oily. However, my friends ordered beef pad thai and beef noodles with broccoli and the beef was a bit dry and the pad thai a bit sweet. Overall, the service was excellent, they were able to take our reservation and seat us with short notice, and their signature dish was delicious. The eggplant was still raw which made it bitter and slightly crunchy. The tofu felt over fried and oily and salty which was not very enjoyable to eat. - thai gnocchi in coconut milk (7/10): steamed purple rice gnocchi in a sweet coconut broth with young coconut shreds. This was one of the more unique desserts. I was expecting it to be more aesthetically appealing after seeing the garnishes on the entrees. It was simple with coconut and rice as the predominant flavors. WOULD I GO BACK? As a vegetarian, likely not. The Gaeng Poo and Chor Muang are must-gets at this warm and intimate establishment. There are only 7 interior tables and the rest are in their backyard (which my partner and I didn't get to see). While it was still a little warm while we were seated indoors, there was at least some air coming from the air conditioner in the space. Since the place is small, service is quick, efficient, and hospitable. The highlights of the meal were the Chor Muang (Royal Flower Dumplings) and the Gaeng Poo (Soft-shell Crab Curry). The dumplings were beautifully presented and tasted nutty, sweet and savory. The texture was pleasantly chewy. The Gaeng Poo is delicious goodness featuring well seasoned crab and curry. The crunchy soft shell crab provided a fun contrasting crunch in an otherwise saucy dish. The curry itself was a nice balance of sweet, savory and fragrant coconut. We also got the fried banana blossoms to try which were pretty good, served with the standard sweet Thai chili sauce. I would suggest skipping the lemongrass chicken skewers and the Panang Neua. While both are good and have really well seasoned and tender meat, they veered on the sweeter side for me the lemongrass chicken is also served with the standard sweet Thai chili sauce so there's that. All you need to take from this is get a reservation if you can and that Kaew Jao Jorm has good food. And maybe don't go on a scorching hot day. read more

most recent visit: TLDR do not host your party here! food still superb but i was very disappointed to see that with stress testing, they couldn't provide the level of service needed for a large party. my friend had booked her birthday party here for the outdoor patio. the first problem was that the heat lamp ran out of gas. they reassured us they would refill it, but after 30-45 mins no one had come to the rescue. we stopped multiple servers multiple times to try to get it resolved. on that note, the second issue was that they didn't have enough rice to serve us all so we had to eat our meals staggered. our friends who had the first serving of rice were forced to eat ahead of the rest to avoid their food getting ice cold (remember the heat lamps?) finally, we had asked them to clear the table and bring out the birthday cake. i really felt for them because they were clearly understaffed but it was just a mess. we asked them 3x and no one came so we asked for the check immediately and took the cake somewhere else to be cut. my friend's magical day turned into a nightmare and she was pretty upset though she didn't make a fuss to the staff/management. the staff didn't do anything to apologize to the birthday girl either. unfortunately, i can't in good conscience recommend this restaurant. first visit: the pomelo salad was insane like maybe even better than my entree. i couldn't wrap my head around how it was that good. perfect balance of tartness from the pomelo, savoriness from the fish sauce, and freshness from the mint. Even though the ambiance and presentation of the dishes was beautiful, I wouldn't come here for the dishes I had. The lemongrass chicken was very mildly flavored compared to lemongrass dishes I've had in other Thai restaurants and like the shrimp dish, I could really only taste the breading. My friend and I came on a whim for a Sunday lunch and we are so glad we did. The interior of this place is beautiful with gorgeous tapestries and flowers. There is limited seating inside but there seemed to be outdoor seating as well. Very intimate setting. We had the chor muang which are these sweet and savory chicken and peanut dumplings with a great coconut flavor. These are gluten friendly as the wrapping is made with rice flour. For entrees, we had the panang neua (panang curry with tender beef) and the chu chee pla too (whole mackerel in red curry sauce). Both dishes were had a great depth of flavor but the panang neua really stood out to me. As you can see by the photos, the mackerel is whole so it has bones - if you're used to eating fish fillets, be mindful while eating. Service was wonderful, waters were constantly refilled and the rice was unlimited (I was asked if I wanted more and happily obliged). However, keep in mind that this restaurant is tiny (less than 30ish seats I think) so once they do become popular or on busier weekends, reservations are probably better. For a group of 3 we ordered the Yum Som O (Pomelo Salad), Phed Ma Kham (Duck Breast), Salted Eggs with Five-Spiced Pork, and Crab Omelette. This was a perfect amount of food for our group and every dish was phenomenal. The only dish I thought that was good but not necessarily special enough to re-order was the Crab Omelette. Solid dish but nothing stood out compared to the other dishes. Also unlike other Thai restaurants that charge $$ for a side of rice, this place offers free unlimited rice. Well decorated and cute little Thai spot! Had a reservation on a Friday evening and got seated pretty immediately, although there was also a backyard patio so maybe we didn't need the reservation. The indoors was quite small and crowded though. I was really excited for this place after reading some of the reviews but unfortunately maybe my expectations were too high. All of the food was very aesthetic and beautifully presented, but unfortunately didn't taste as mind blowing as I would have hoped. We ordered the Chor Muang, which had a nice savory / sweet taste on the filling, but I thought the dough was a little thick unfortunately. I also thought the royal pad thai was mostly just alright, the noodles were a little dry and sticky. The shrimp was not bad but I've also definitely had juicier shrimp before as well. I will say that I did quite enjoy the soft shell crab curry though. I really liked the spice flavor of the curry and the crab meat was pretty tender. Great place for Thai food. Came in on Saturday as a walk in and was seated immediately. Shared the flower dumplings, soft shell crab curry, and the thai curry with pork belly. All were wonderfully delicious and would definitely recommend them all. The dishes were all so well spiced. The soft shell crab curry was creamy and crunchy with the fried soft shell crab, while the thai curry with pork belly had a lighter, brothy feel while still being well balanced. The pork belly was also cooked very tender, and the dumplings had a nice blend of sweet and savory. The curries also come with unlimited rice, which is so nice considering usually you have to order rice at other restaurants. Service was great, rice was plentiful and dishes were served quickly.
