Came in for lunch wanting Egusi and Fufu. It was the current special and signs provided that the lamb version was approximately $27. I chose the chicken with spinach sauce and fufu. Parking is easy and it's a fast service/cafeteria set-up where you order at the counter, they make your food, and you pay at the end; if you're looking for quick, this is definitely easy. The chicken and the sauce are full of taste with a light spice. The fufu is like a thick mashed potato and paired well with the sauce. I had a couple of my coworkers try it when I took it back to the office and we all agreed it was great. The only drawback is the pricing is the same for lunch and dinner. It's more common for me to spend over $20 on dinner but not for lunch. I'll definitely go back but due to the price, it'll be more of a special treat. read more

I went here just after 5pm on a Wednesday with my son. He got the kid's bowl with jellof rice, chicken, garlic potatoes, and peanut butter sauce. I got the #5 ablo which came with 2 sweet rice dumplings, steak kabobs, tomato sauce, and tomato salad. My steak might have been a little on the tough side; but not enough to detract a star. I tried the lemongrass hibiscus lemonade. We split the beignets for desert. Everything was excellent. The food was ready very quickly. My 10 year old had never had any of this cuisine. The red rice and chicken. Omg it's so flavorful and so much food. This could easily be two meals. There is no way I will be eating this all in one sitting. So while the price may seem a tad high for Omaha at $13, I think it's a super good deal considering I will be eating this twice The gentleman working was incredibly kind, and after telling him it was my first time and he went over the menu with me and gave me his recommendations. I found Okra African Grill looking on Yelp! My husband wanted to go to Chipotle, but we opted to try a different place in Omaha, so we tried this place. Coincidentally, it had a Chipotle-like concept of choosing your protein, starch, and extras, but I would choose it over Chipotle. Our family likes seafood, so did the "Build a Bowl" and chose shrimp and fish. There was a generous amount of shrimp, and the shrimp were not teeny! I wrestled with getting the Fufu (mashed yam) or rice, and ended up getting the red rice. I'm still curious and would want to try the Fufu next time. Someone chose to get black-eyed peas in place of rice, and was very happy with that. I would recommend getting the tomato salad, which is like a pico, as a side. It's a crunchy and refreshing addition to the bowl. It's personal preference, but we liked the fried plantains. We also liked the spinach (Gboma/Eguisi Desi) sauce best with the shrimp. Imo you have to put some thought into your protein and sauce combinations. Peanut butter sauce seems like it would go great with chicken. It was a pleasure to meet the owner of the establishment. The steak was more like a roast. I do under stand the price of things are going up. The price you pay and you only get to pick one meat and choose up to four toppings. The toppings were very limited. The service was ok the person that help me didn't smile when I was trying to joke with him. The place was very quiet not very many people inside at the time I was in. My friend and I went on a lunch date at Okra! One of our friends shared with us her experience and she said it was delicious, so we decided to try it out. Okra is located on Pacific St, in the shopping plaza next to Massage Envy and Starbucks. As we walked in we saw that they had their menu on the wall. There's an array of food to choose from. I like that you can choose what to put in your bowl like sauce or extra veggies. I decided to try the Jaffa rice bowl. It had chicken, vegetables, tomato sauce, and fried plantains. The mix was just amazing. A great blend of sweet and savory! I also liked that the container that the food came in is reusable and microwavable. I love this so much. Nothing is over-priced, and there are giant portion sizes if you want them, too. I've grabbed food to go at least a dozen times from Okra now -- going back to their previous location even. No matter the dish, you will find it has so much flavor, such fresh ingredients, and as long as you don't over-eat (which can be very difficult) it's super healthy. It sure doesn't taste like health food, though! If they had a location a little closer to Elkhorn, I'd get food here every week. I most often get the chicken with the peanut butter sauce, red rice, beans, grilled veggies, tomatoes, roasted sweet potato, and fried plantains. Delicious! If you're not familiar with this cuisine or restaurant, think Qdoba with different flavors and spices. You walk up, choose your rice, your beans, your protein, etc., and end up with a flavorful and amazing finished product. They also offer standard menu items, one of which is the immediately addictive peanut butter chicken. My wife's eyes rolled back when she first tasted it, and at the end of the meal she said "this is the best new food I've tried in years!" There are also dumplings, vegan options, and other varieties. Everything tastes fresh and perfectly prepared. The hot sauces deserve mention: the hot is very hot and the medium is pretty hot too. Quick, efficient service, fair prices, and very tasty food. My wife has to eat gluten free and the friendly young lady helping us let us know most everything there is gluten free. I enjoyed the peanut butter chicken and my wife made her own bowl. I also tried the mini beef empanada and we shared some plantain chips and avocado dip. All in all everything was extremely flavorful and well enjoyed by us. One of my favorite parts is their tomato-based house sauce - it tied all of the flavors together well! It's cool because they have unique ingredients like plantains, but the way they serve it is familiar (similar to "make your own bowl" places like Chipotle). I will say - the ingredients have a slight spiciness to them, but it's not too overwhelming in my opinion! Lastly, the beignets were so good (and not too pricey). This was my first visit to Okra African Grill. I was curious about the specialty dishes and decided on the beef kabob dish called the Ablo Special. Service was good with selecting additional sides of potatoes and beignets for dessert. The kabob meat was tough in texture and lowered my rating even though the flavor was very good. I had to chew and chew in order to break the meat down to swallow it. The Grilled Fish Fillet Special took an extra 15 minutes to cook and was worth the wait, coming out fresh and flaky. The plantains are sweet and moist to the taste buds. The beignets were soft and at room temperature, not the warm and crisp style I was hoping for. Overall, an average experience at this eatery. Perhaps, I didn't get the tender cuts on the kabobs. If I do return, I would definitely go with the grilled chicken with rice and beans. read more
