Not very many African Grills in Omaha! This place caught my eye due to very convenient location and brightly lit and colored. The style is more of a chipotle type rather than a sit down restaurant. Everything is pre made at the counter, and you pick what you want. Their bowls are the easiest- pick a rice style, choice of meat, and a side. They do have a few specialties, like a salmon plate. Had different flavors of lemonade! I got the Mango pineapple, and it was delicious and thirst quenching. I loved that it was something different from any other menu in town. The menu is set up where you can choose your own rice bowl with many options to select from or you can order curated meals from their menu if you don't feel like making those decisions. There was not one thing that me and my partner ordered that we didn't love. Plus, each meal comes with a lot of food. I'm disappointed we haven't gone here sooner. read more

So so so tasty! This was my first trip to Okra and it definitely won't be my last. Several friends have raved about how good this place is, so I gave it a try today. I picked to build my own bowl and was blown away with how many combinations I could make with the options. The bowl I put together was so good! I picked the peanut butter sauce to go on top and got some spicy salsa to add a little kick to it. I decided that the pita chips looked too good to pass up, so I got those with some avocado dip. The young man at the front counter this evening needs some additional training to learn how to interact effecttively with customers. He was not friendly nor welcoming. A patron confronted him about his lack of customer service as he was a first timer who was excited to try some new food. I left a tip on the bill and hope it would be shared as a smiling young lady was cleaning the tables. A thank you for patronage was not expressed when handing me the receipt. If you're looking for a new kind of cuisine to find, you have your spot right here. It's set up to "build your own" like Chipotle but you can also order their specials like the peanut butter chicken - this is what I did. Although the sauce didn't taste like peanut butter it added nice savory flavor to the dish. The dish also had vegetables, rice and plantains. The plantains were super good. There are many sides to choose from. I tried their beef empanada which was packed with flavor. I will return again and next time I'll try building my own bowl. read more

Visiting Omaha on a long driving trip. Since we loved a couple African restaurants in New Orleans, we wanted to give this a try. Soooo glad we did. No, it's not a sit down and give a waiter your order restaurant. It's a go to the line, learn about the food, order off the menu on the wall and pay at the register at the end of the line restaurant. Mostly, though, it's a "damn, this stuff is great" restaurant. My wife loved the peanut butter chicken, and I adored the lamb bowl with red rice and spinach sauce. I just tried this restaurant today for Father's Day and I can say with full confidence that I will be going back. I may even make a section for it in my budgeting. It was that good. This place is so good! Clean and no fussy atmosphere means the focus is solely on the food. And the food is good! I ordered the peanut chicken entree which came with grilled veggies and fried plantains with rice. I dove in and didn't get a picture. So much flavor and all juicy and perfectly cooked with a lot of different textures. My husband got the grilled fish fillet which is just so juicy and spicy. The ginger lemonade and pineapple mango lemonade were perfect to go with our meals. Entrees start at $8.99 and they deliver on Door Dash and Grub Hub. I have had food from this restaurant three times. I like the nice options of flavors and colors. If you are a vegetable lover this place is for you. If you are a meat person this is for you too. Avoid this place. Nothing good can come from a cafeteria-style restaurant where food simmers in bleach-cleaned steel containers all day. Lamb was tough, chicken was tough, South African vegetables had a hint of bleach, jellof rice that's plain rice with red coloring, and over-cooked plantains. I could go on but you get the picture. The food is terrible. Do not go here. And if after all of this you decide you must go, avoid the double meat on anything. You're better off getting another bowl (if you enjoy punishment) for the same price as the additional meat (this blew my mind). We were not wise and got extra meat on one of the bowls. I had Ablo (one of the specialties) which was 2 sweet rice dumplings served with 3 grilled beef skewers seasoned in various herbs & spices. Our driver went back and let them know, but they refused to make another order because they said that they know they packed it . I even called twice and the phone went to voicemail. We travel through Omaha on the way to other places from Iowa and Okra African Grill is our go to for lunch or dinner if we stop. It's delicious and fairly customizable. The fried okra is, of course, excellent. Don't miss the plantain. Actually, I have loved everything I've ever ordered here except the beignets. We also like the bite of the ginger lemonade and the fruitiness of the hibiscus lemonade. Service is always excellent, sometimes a little slow when only one person is working but that's to be expected when we often come outside normal meal hours and there's a person or two ahead of us. As a fast casual place, it's always soooo much faster than a traditional restaurant. read more
