I have a terrible amount of childhood dental work that needs to be redone - definitely a painful and frightening endeavor! I'm always shaking with fear before I get to the office, but the staff remember and are very comforting! Denise is the hygienist who cleaned my teeth - can you believe that it was actually PLEASANT?! She was so kind, informative, and reassuring. As well, Dr. Amy and her staff, (Ashley, Maria, Gina, Laurie, and the main woman with cropped hair - she's the BEST and I forgot her name!) are the reason I am willing to face my fears and address my wisdom teeth. I just had my extraction completed last week and I couldn't be more grateful. My expectations were set, I received thorough information before, during, and after. I sometimes feel like I'm speaking with close family when I interact with the team - they always have MY best interest at heart and have always remembered how nervous and frightened I am. Ashley has helped me giggle through the anxiety and told me how proud she was after the procedure. I genuinely love this staff! I cannot say enough wonderful things about this office! I was absolutely terrified going to the dentist since it has been years since I've been. But Alexis and Dr. Styskal made it great! They explained everything to me in depth and made it less scary. I ended up needing a referral since I had an issue with a root canal I had done years ago. I initially chose Okun Dentistry because they had office hours on Saturday's to fit my work schedule. The entire staff in the office is efficient, cognizant of my time and friendly! One of the best dental experiences I have ever had in my life! It is a father daughter duo. My wife sees Bruce Okun, and I see Amy Okun. We are both always happy to go to get our teeth cleaned or whatever else we need because the office is so nice, and the employees are so competent. Their dental hygienist is absolutely the best one I have ever had. She actually convinced me to floss every day, and I do! She did it by carefully explaining the benefits, and helping me to realize that it will actually cut down the amount of time I have to spend getting teeth cleaned (i am usually in and out in under 45 minutes, thanks to their efficiency and my obsession with flossing). The office itself is very nice (recently remodeled). Apparently they have built in music and movies for you to watch while you are getting drilled, but I haven't been drilled here, so someone else will need to confirm. If I did need a good drilling, this is where I'd go to get it done. I love you Okun Dentistry! And I'll miss you now that my dental insurance has changed. read more

Overall, the people are friendly, and my dental hygienist was really very good. However, the reason for the low score is the COST they charge for a cleaning is absolutely ridiculous: $231! The cleaning is $112 and then they charged another $119 for the dentist to come in, look in my mouth for maybe 2 minutes, say I need a cap, and leave. In other dental clinics, the quick exam by the doc is included in the cleaning. The previous dentist I went to charged $89 for cleaning, exam and x-rays. What Okun charges is far more expensive than what my mother paid in Los Angeles! Then, what's even worse, they have this "deal" where you pay $39 a month for two cleanings a year, which is $468, MORE than paying for the two cleanings individually. Some "deal"! If you are rich, and want to spend nearly $500 a year for a couple of dental cleanings, this is your clinic. For me, I'm moving on. PS: average cost for a crown in the Valley is $1200. Besides having my wisdom teeth removed four years ago (even then I felt like I was at a used car dealership), I haven't seen a dentist in at least 14 years, maybe more. I have significant anxiety over dentists to the point I would rather have every finger broken with a hammer while watching than go see the dentist. I would brush and floss multiple times a day just to put off the inevitable dentist visit. I read positive reviews and decided it was time to stop being a sissy. We have been with Amy for almost 20 years. This year our children decided to move us to Oregon where our son lives because my husband was showing signs of early onset dementia. The first thing I heard when we arrived at our Assisted Living facility was "You have a movie star's smile." The compliment came from a young woman who was visiting her grandmother. You can't imagine what this meant to a person who rarely smiled in her youth because she was ashamed of her teeth. When I met Amy I was middle-aged and old fillings were falling out and new cavities were coming in. The first thing I learned about Amy is she does not believe in pain. It is not allowed in her office. The second thing I learned is she will not do any work she believes is unnecessary. If there's a questionable spot on the X-ray she'll say "We'll keep an eye on it." I'm moving out of state and I can't leave without reviewing Okun Dentistry, where I've received quality care for 15 years. Dr. Amy and the now-retired Dr. Bruce have always been wonderful and caring, and recently I saw Dr. Styskal, who is just as competent and kind as they are. Luckily I've only had a minor amount of work done--a crown replacement and one filling--over the years, but the care I've received has always been excellent. The hygienists have routinely been excellent as well. I've never minded going to the dentist, but even if you do you can't go wrong here. Dr Amy and the staff at Okun Dentistry are absolutely wonderful!! I got their information from Yelp and decided to call for an appointment. So far I've had a cleaning and cavities filled. Both appointments were actually great exeperiences, and yes I realize I'm writing about a dentist! First off, everyone is super friendly and always trying to make you comfortable. I was offered music or sitcoms during my cleaning, I unfortunately turned them down out of being speechless! The cleaning went well, they thoroughly explained to me how to brush and the problem areas that I needed to reach better. I ended up back a few weeks later for some cavity fillings, yet another surprisingly pleasant experience. I ended up needing a root canal in a molar I barely use due to having no tooth opposite it. Dr. Amy gave me options to either do the root canal, or pull the tooth. She made it clear she is not a fan of pulling teeth, but in my financial situation she would understand if I pulled it and support my decision. I needed a root canal on a tooth I use 100% so I took the option to pull it, and she most definitely followed through with her promise to support me. After mine went so well I took my 4 year old daughter for the first time! They spoke to her like she was grown, which I loved. Baby talk doesn't fly in my house! They asked her questions and also showed her how to brush. They really respected her as a patient even though she is only 4! During her cleaning, they had put on cartoons for her. They brought out a huge stack of movies to allow my daughter to pick one. The entire time she was being worked on, she made no noises, arguments, or even movements! I could tell she was uncomfortable, but between the cartoons and Dr Amy's caring and comforting hands and words, she was extremely relaxed. And of course she loved the goody bag at the end of the appointment! (Of course no candy goodies, it is the dentist!) On top of the amazing treatment, the receptionist is also a huge help! She talked to me about my pending insurance charges, the future charges, and what I should do so I don't get stuck with an out of pocket bill. She helped me add my benefits up to see what I could do within my allowance from my insurance. The last dentist I saw never did this and I ended up with a $700 bill for going over my benefits. I spent time on the phone at Okun and figured it out with her so that I do not end up surprised with a bill I can't afford to pay. Breaking it down, it's the dentist. It is never any fun. But Okun Dentistry gets 5 stars (would give more if I could). They are aware that it usually isn't pleasant and at every turn they are going out of their way to make you as comfortable as possible! This review is waaaaay overdue! I have been going to Okun Dentistry since the early 80's-- in fact, they are the only dental practice that my family has used since we moved to Arizona and I would not have changed that for anything. Dr. Bruce Okun has always been a wonderful dentist, and several years ago, his daughter, Amy, followed in his footsteps. Six months ago, I finally got up the nerve to replace a front crown that I had had since I was 16 years old! With my daughter's wedding approaching, I decided it was time to improve my smile by whitening my teeth and then getting a new crown to match. I was quite nervous about the whole process, but through it all, Dr. Amy and the entire staff were beyond amazing. They went out of their way to meet with me several times during the at-home whitening process, and on the day of the procedure, everyone showed me so much caring and compassion, and truly put me at ease. Dr. Amy is a perfectionist and even sent me to the custom color lab specialist twice to ensure an exact match. I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. I'm familiar with the OSHA/sterilization standards for dentist offices, and as a patient I've seen frequent violations here, from one hygienist in particular. Examples include her touching her latex gloves to the back of her head before putting them on (without realizing it, as she adjusted her mask), and handling (bare-handed) tools/attachments to be used in-mouth, after touching other non-sanitized surfaces. When I've politely pointed out the issues I've noticed (on multiple visits) and requested an extra hand-wash, fresh gloves, etc., I've received defensiveness and denials, with accounts of what had happened that, plain and simple, were not what I had personally witnessed with my own eyes just moments prior. Attempts to talk my concerns away instead of responsibly addressing them, just make me more concerned. In my view, my dentist office should be -more- aware and strict about health code violations than their patients, not less. read more

This place is amazing! Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, and they offer complementary coffee and water. Apart from that, the place looked very clean and neat. People working there are true professionals who seem very knowledgeable and experienced. They will take time to explain things to you, describe what your options are, and in general give you useful advice on how to keep your teeth healthy. This morning I had a cleaning appointment, and not only it went very smoothly, I also received a complementary toothbrush and floss at the end of the appointment. From the standalone stylized sign out front, to the well-appointed waiting area, Okun Dentistry is a class act. I met Bruce Okun IRL (in real life) and through our conversation, I found out he is a dentist. After he asked, I sheepishly admitted it had been about 4 years since a cleaning, and I always put it off trying to fit it into my schedule. He was very sweet but insistent. I really felt it was not just for his business, he was personally interested in having me in for a visit. I was excited! After some discussion over the phone, I found out he didn't take my insurance, but his daughter Amy did. On arriving, the receptionist was very friendly and while handling a few calls, acknowledged me and got me my forms between calls. Terri took me back to the area that I would get my work done. I was very impressed with all of the facilities. The complex the office is located in is older, maybe 1960s I would guess, but you wouldn't know it from the inside of Okun Dentistry. While taking X-rays, I asked Terri about the mouthpiece I was biting down on before each shot. She told me it was the film, and the x-rays were being taken digitally. Then she turned on a monitor and I was able to watch each x-ray come on screen. She told me this process reduced the radiation and it was so quick. She also took the chance to suggest better ways to remember flossing. Dr. Amy Okun came into the room after the x-rays were done and she was very friendly and polite. Briefly looking at my intake form I had filled out when I got there, she asked if I was local. We found out we had some overlap in our lives (she went to high school with my older siblings) and throughout the cleaning we chatted about things. It definitely took my mind of the sound and feeling of metal as it scrapped along my teeth. She teased that my teeth are boring and that I didn't need any work at all.
