This was our first time here and we will definitely drive the 35 min to come back! Staff was very friendly and our server Sherry was beyond nice. This use to be the place to go for breakfast. Now its just a shitty run down diner with overpriced food. The service was wonderful. The food is lower than subpar. I love to dine local but I would rather eat McDonald's and get more food, better tasting food, for a lot lower price. What was once a staple of our community has now become just a found memory of my past. Responding to the comments: 3 times in 2 years I've been disappointed. So I left an honest review i wore the mask. I ate the food. I left a 20% tip. I was disappointed that a place I once loved is now a crap hole diner. I had fine service. The things that bothered me was what you call food. The eggs were perfect but its hard to screw that up. Your gravy was horrible, and you sausage is not edible. Your hashbrowns are hash whites. Who would have thought that somewhere off the highway in Kansas one would find such an amazing Vegan Burger!?! We stopped here on a cross country drive and I was mainly just hoping for a green salad as my only vegetarian option but whoah there it was The Vegan Burger staring at me from the menu. The sweet waitress said it was made from beets. Well it was made so darn well that I kept dicing and picking it apart wondering how did the chef make it taste so damn deliciously?!? Can I have the recipe because it might be the best vegan burger I ever had. The place is clean, service is fast and friendly and everyone had a smile. Plus I think they make their food from scratch. Four of us had breakfast. Only one of us liked our breakfast. I really like corned beef hash and have quite often. It was absolutely the worst I've ever tasted. The service was good, the food horrible. We don't recommend this place at all. Two stars only for good friendly service. read more

Old 56 is an OK - mediocre at best - place to eat. One of the only sit down breakfast spots in Ottawa...and usually expensive for the portion size and quality. Familar with Denny's ir IHOP's menu prices? Old 56 is more expensive than that. Service is usually so-so. I go here when I'm craving pancakes and I'm too lazy to cook them myself. But, 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon and 2 6-7" pancakes will cost you $6.99-7.49 before tax, tip or beverage. And, ironically, the management called me out in front of a bunch of guests - stating that I could no longer order from the kid's menu (previously I had been allowed to do so because of a medical reason) - she very rudely stated that I could either order a regular menu item, order a side item or choose to go elsewhere. I ordered online. The desserts that are advertised are not actually available in the restaurant. Custard is no longer carried and they were out of apple pie. I had ordered both. I was not charged for those items, but I did order four meals and only received three. I did not realize until I was in Garnett, so it wasn't worth it for me to go all the way back. My family tells me that they enjoyed their meals. Mine was the missing meal so I cannot say. read more

Great food, great service! We stopped here on our way back home to Arizona. We had breakfast here and the eggs were cooked perfectly - sometimes when we order eggs, we get runny or overcooked eggs but these were cooked exactly as we asked - over medium. The staff made us feel welcome. To top it all off, my husband left his phone sitting on the table and when we realized it we were in Oklahoma City. We called and talked to Sherry and she Fedexed it back to us overnight! We will be stopping here every time we travel to Kansas City to visit family, if nothing else, just to say hello to Sherry and thank her again. read more

Well, I was hoping maybe the last two reviews were just from grumpy folks and besides, I'm pretty sure this is the only place in town that serves breakfast. The service was unbelievably slow. My friend ordered a BLT with no mayo, and the cooks put mayo on it anyway. I don't blame the waitress, but when she tried to correct it, the cook said they were too busy to correct it. I've never heard of this in my whole life. We were going to talk to the manager, but it turned out the manager was one of the cooks. My breakfast wasn't even that great. I guess we just had the misfortune getting caught up in this armpit of Kansas. We were going to stay in Lawrence, but all the motels were full. Good luck on your breakfast quest:/ read more

We just happen to stop to grab a bite to eat. Didnt research anywhere to go. Its a cute place, and we were hoping for good food. They have a great menu with all day breakfast and plenty of unique items. Food was good but would have been a lot better had it arrived hot. Service was definitely lacking today. Waited a long time for coffee, refills and our food. And not once after our food was delivered were we checked on or asked how it was. It wasn't packed either to cause delays. Prices are a little high for breakfast I feel, but not outrageous. If we are in the area, we might try this place again. But I'm not making a special trip for it. read more

If I could give negative 10 stars I would. they advertise their sweet potato fries as waffle fries and they left out my fiancé's mashed potato's and his chicken strips were burnt as well. When we tried to bring it back uneaten they would only refund us for the mash potatoes and they rudely laughed at me over the phone when I called. This is supposed to be a family restaurant but they obviously have no respect for the fact that we worked hard for our money and they took 30$ from us for a messed up order and refused to refund us our money even though we brought back all the food uneaten. I would desperately dumpster dive at McDonald's before I ever spend another dollar here. read more

I was very pleasantly surprised when invited to breakfast here on a Saturday morning before the Ottawa vs Avila football game. It was very close to my hotel and very convenient. It also was very busy I am not sure if this is due to general popularity or if it was because it was Ottawa University's homecoming weekend. Their menu was a very traditional diner comfort food menu with all the things one would expect from a traditional road side diner of yesteryear. I opted for the Country Fried Steak abc eggs with hash browns. I have a huge preference for my eggs over medium but almost no one understands what that means in today's world. In my experience most establishments err on the side of cooking the yolk too hard. So I generally order lightly scrambled eggs hoping that my eggs do not get overcooked. But several in our party ordered their eggs over medium and how I wish I had, this kitchen did them perfectly. My country fried steak was absolutely perfect and the gravy was a perfect taste, consistency, and amount to match the steak. The hash browns were shredded potatoes cooked on a grill. I would have preferred mine less crispy but still had an excellent taste. I cannot comment on their coffee as I am not a drip coffee drinker and no one who had breakfast with me drank coffee. This is a definite must return to breakfast place if I am ever in the area again. read more

Went for dinner. Service okay. Food, thats another story. My wife ordered the soup and salad (all you could eat) she ate most of her salad, left part because the lettuce was wilting and brown. Soup okay but not great. I ordered a taco salad, I know this is not that type of restaurant. The bread bowl was soft not crunchy. The meat I believe was a can of chile and not much lettuce. My food came about the time she finished. Need to work on bringing food out at same time. I recommend another restaurant. Sorry, owner. I'm sure you do some things right. read more

This is an update from Sunday, 08/11/2013. My wife wanted to go to breakfast, so we went by default to Old 56. She ordered the No. 1 breakfast which in her case is one scrambled egg, bacon, hash browns, and toast. I had a veggie omelet with hash browns and toast. Everything came out cold except the veggie omelet which was tepid. The hash browns were "hash whites" since they were barely fried brown. The toast was cold. Normally we would just send everything back, but we did not want to take the time. Now Sunday morning may be a busy time, and most of the wait staff may be young people, but even looking at the hash browns would indicate they had not been adequately cooked. I did not want to take the time upon leaving to make my point at the desk since there were many people around and it's a further incursion on my time, but at least I can now make a Yelp review. We ate what we could, left a lot, and will think twice or three times about eating breakfast out. read more
