This was our very first experience staying at a bed-and-breakfast, at The Old Big Bear BnB. Adriana and Jim's personalities shine throughout the property, with thoughtful touches with details both inside and out. The hot, homemade breakfast prepared by Adriana each morning far exceeded our expectations--so much more than the standard continental breakfast. Every dish was made with care and felt truly special. Both Adriana and Jim were exceptional hosts--warm, welcoming, and incredibly accommodating. They made us feel less like guests in their own home and more like part of their extended family. Their charm and genuine hospitality set this place apart. While a bit of light maintenance could be done in some areas, it's easily overshadowed by the outstanding service and the overall experience. We're so glad this was our first BnB stay--it set the bar high! read more

It felt like staying at a family member's home. We arrived on a Thursday afternoon. Part of the drive there from LA included some winding roads, so I recommend planning your arrival time to be before sunset so you can drive while there's still daylight. Jim was there to meet us and show us our room. We got The Cowboy Room on the second floor (no live cowboys included! ) which we selected so that we could have separate beds. The room was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. There were no other guests, so we had the whole floor to ourselves. It was super quiet and peaceful. I imagine it would be different if there was a house full guests. Jim gave us suggestions on things we could do and places to visit. He also gave us the code for the door, the wifi password, and warnings about bears. We opted to walk around the area and enjoyed a fantastic dinner at The Perch restaurant just a few minutes walk down the road. Coffee was available at 8 the next morning, Adriana made breakfast ready by 830am. We had eggs in hash brown cups, sausages, maple scones, toast with a variety of spreads, and fresh orange juice. Everything was delicious. Sorry I didn't take pictures, I was too busy eating! I was able to eat everything on the table. I had mentioned our list of food allergies upon reserving online and also emailed the list closer to the date. The communication was excellent. I would love to stay at Old Bear B n B again. This is a lovely place with amazing hosts! We were visiting friends locally and were delighted with the accommodations that were nearby. We had the garden room that had its own private bathroom and a private entrance to our room since were coming home late. The room was cozy and we could control the heat on our extra space heater, which was great. Place was really clean, loved the soft beds, and generally its a great place to stay. My fiancee recently lost her job. While preparing her a cardboard box to live in, I thought I'd surprise her with something nice. Losing your job can be really stressful. It's my duty as a loving future-husband-to-be to cheer that bright and beautiful face up! We found this cozy little BnB run by David, and his wonderful wife Maxine. From the start, they were good conversationalists! Open, friendly, lovers of history. I can tell they're the type of people who moved away from the city to live a full and fruitful life. It shows in every detail. The accommodations are clean, there are two great pups that just hang around, looking cute and whatnot. The rooms are wonderfully decorated. Comfortable, homey, never gaudy or overdone. Everything has a wonderful rustic flavor, and we slept very well. It is a testament to their warmth; everything is very genuine and cozy. Breakfast was amazing! It was a great, home cooked meal. We met a few others who were staying and got into a really interesting discussion about our travels and life experiences. We fell in love with Maxine's art work, and even bought one of her pieces! My only regret is that we didn't spend more time with them. The fiancee and I have a tendency to wander. We worried about our etiquette, and didn't know if we were doing the whole b&b thing "wrong". Even if we were, they were super cordial, and always had a smile on their face. If you're ever in this neck of the woods, don't hesitate to book! Now my sweet love will have such wonderful memories of us on this trip to put her to sleep in her brand new card board box under a bridge, by the river. She will even have Maxine's beautiful badger painting to lull her to sleep as the sounds of sirens, screaming vagrants, and destitute rabid opossums draw ever nearer. I love you sweety! I stayed here last minute for a night on my way up to SF from SD during the summer. There was a traffic incident and we were stopped on the 5 for a while. I was so tired and all of the hotels near the Frazier Park exit were booked. Luckily, I found this gem, though a bit away from the freeway. The couple that run the place were lovely. They knew I just wanted to sleep and get on the road early the next morning. They set me up with a cozy room and some light snacks. Now I need to go back for an actual vacay so I can enjoy the peaceful location, hikes and breakfast! read more

David and Maxine have created a lovely haven. I'm a stand up comic and I stayed here two nights for a comedy job nearby. They were gracious and generous hosts, the bed was comfy, the food delicious, and their home inviting and warm. I highly recommend visiting Old Bear! My partner and I went to the Old Bear for our first anniversary to watch the Lyrids meteor shower up on Mount Pinos in the Los Padres National Forest. We called the Monday before arriving and made a reservation. David was very nice on the phone, and provided a few different room/price options. We chose the Blue Bird room, which was the cheapest. He said we could bring our dog (if he was "amiable"), and that arriving late was fine. We arrived at about 10pm on Friday evening, and, embarrassingly, I walked right in to their front hall, not realizing that this IS actually the owners' house! I was mortified, but they were gracious and welcoming, and very excited to meet our dog. They offered the hot tub, their large collection of DVDs, and a portable DVD player for our room. None of the other guests had arrived yet, and we confirmed that it would be okay for us to come and go as we pleased - we were planning on heading up to Mt. Pinos right then to see some of the meteor shower. They said that was completely fine, and showed us around the place. Maxine told us about breakfast, and then we left for a few hours. Although we didn't see any meteors (the moon was too bright), the park was gorgeous at night! We weren't aware when we booked that we would have to share a bathroom with the other guests, but didn't turn out to be a big deal. (They have a room with a private bath, but it was booked.) We did have to wait a bit to use it in the morning, but otherwise, we joined the other guests downstairs and had a very pleasant breakfast finding out about both our hosts, and the other guests. Maxine served a breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, and juices. We checked out soon after to head home, but there was a greeting-card making craft lesson happening at around 11am! Overall, despite it being a little different than staying in a normal hotel, it was worth it! One night, plus breakfast, at a very affordable price. The room and bathroom was very clean, and our hosts were very gracious. We would stay there again in a heartbeat! read more

I am a native Southern Californian who never really had many snow experiences growing up. My group of friends rented out the entire B&B for New Years Eve 2012 and had our best NYE to date! We cooked a HUGE dinner there and chatted up a storm with the owner David. Unfortunately, we clogged his sink up, but he never made us feel bad about it. He fixed it right then and there and we finished the meal without another hiccup. Ended staying up with David for several hours joking with each other. He is a truly gifted storyteller who understands and appreciates the art of humor. Stayed in the Bluebird room. The room was cozy and the bed was heavenly. The view was great. It was warm all night! In Truth, our weekend stay at the Old Bear B&B was as good as it could get. Not only was I exuberant to be out of LA and in the beautiful mountains. I slept well in a comfortable room and a great bed. Max made us really filling delicious breakfasts and John Ferrari loved the coffee. On top of the location, I had an amazing voice-over session with David Stenstrom in his studio. I had so much fun... David and I had so much fun playing together and I learned lots and lots about VO. He made me laugh and we were both jazzed as we we worked on my VO technique. All in all, David's studio in the mountains is quite special. Safe places to walk among the beautiful trees. From the moment we got there David and Maxine were exceptionally warm and friendly to my entire family. There was a toy closet for the kids and they had snow sleds for us to borrow. They set us up in a great room and told us where to go to see the snow and sights. When a bad storm caught us in an unfortunate situation, they were completely understanding. They let us stay with our cat, which we just really appreciated, because it's not always easy to find accommodations that are comfortable with pets staying. The place itself was gorgeous. The Old Bear is like coming home to Mom's house. Quiet and peaceful, Maxine and David are wonderful people, creative artists, and spectacular hosts. She cooked us a scrumptious breakfast according to our dietary needs, served with a side of delightful conversation. Movies, Lincoln Logs, puppets, and games kept my little ones occupied all night while we cuddled by the fire. I very highly recommend the Orion room. It has a private entrance and full private bathroom. Plus it has one large comfortable bed and a double fold out couch. We will definitely be back next winter snow. read more

If you live in the city and want to experience complete tranquility and fresh air the old bear bed and breakfast is the perfect experience. When I arrived Sunday after I was pleasantly greeted by Dave and Maxine. Their home is very spacious with several rooms available and very cost effective. I have never been this relaxed before. Even though there is a community bathroom it was never an issue. The back porch was my favorite place to sit and relax with a hot tub in the back which I took advantage of that night. They are located right next to the pine mtn village center that has everything you will need for additional food and drink. Maxine had a great breakfast the next morning. Fresh coffee to sit out on the porch and enjoy the scenery. Close to hiking trails and right across from the golf course. I will definitely be back. Can't wait for the snow.. read more

I love the Old Bear Bed and Breakfast! The place is adorable-- all wood, an old fashioned fireplace, giant hot tub in the middle of the forest, and all of the comforts of home. David and Maxine, the innkeepers, are fabulous-- funny, warm, and worth the trip all on their own. Added bonus-- rooms are SO reasonably priced. My boyfriend and I stayed at the B&B over Memorial Day weekend, and because we loved the inn so much, we brought back three other couples for New Year's Eve. Needless to say, the place was even more fun-- and even cozier-- surrounded by snow. I highly recommend Old Bear to anyone looking for a destination that feels a world away (but is really only an hour and a half from Los Angeles), anyone that needs a retreat without cell phones, a romantic getaway, or a fun weekend with friends. read more

Big fan. Came out here when visiting some friends from LA, they took me up north. Didn't realize so close to LA you can get this kind of almost Sierra experience. Wildlife everywhere, beauty around. Owner was also an artist and did all these nifty wildlife collages. Guitars hanging from the wall for sing-a-longs, Breakfast was spot-on, it was just what you hope a B&B will be. We came up with our two dogs in order to avoid the 4th of July fireworks, and had the best weekend ever. Our hosts were great company, our dogs were most welcome, the room was lovely, and our breakfasts were over the top. Wonderful! I just returned from my trip and I'm ready to head back! This is the perfect place to get some R&R and enjoy the outdoors (snow in my case) without the crowds, and not have to go too far outside LA. The host is a wonderful person, who offered to come and get me if I got stuck without chains down the road. Besides offering a bountiful and yummy breakfast (Peet's coffee), and cheer in the morning, he knew the town well enough to allow for several outdoor adventures. The rooms are themed and come with everything my sister and I wanted, like a room heater, extra blankets and pillows, and a night-light...oh and a bathrobe to use after I sat in the hot tub with snow falling around me. It was magical. The drive out was also incredibly beautiful. The quaint town has enough places that you're not missing your fancy coffee or meal. Most of the people in town are cheery and suspiciously kind. Except for the woman in charge of the golf course that yelled at me over the microphone (perhaps that was because my dog, sister and I were running around like crazy, breaking the virgin snow ground). There was no cell service, which was fine by me, but there is free wifi. read more

I stayed here with a group of people for a wedding a couple weeks ago. We occupied all rooms that were available in the house. It was comfortable and accommodating. The breakfast that was made for us was very good and good quality. The place was clean as well, thank goodness. I would definitely recommend this place for people to stay. Sometimes you gotta get away. I had heard from an actor friend about this place, and sure enough, one of the owners was an actor! He was funny, welcoming guy, his wife was an artist. So, it wasn't some stiff B&B where you feel like you don't belong in someone's home. There was a hot tub, the town was cute to walk around in. I was there during the Shakespeare Festival. Apparently, there's a Wine festival at some point too. Food good. Reasonable. Closer to LA than Paso, and real undiscovered gem. Go here before some travel channel ruins it for everyone! read more

Went to the Pine Mountain Wine Festival this past weekend. It was suggested to me by a couple I met at a wine tasting event at a local wine room where I live. Just happened to find this B&B online that was right in the town where the wine festival was taking place (super small town, but quaint). My sister and 3 of our friends went with me and none of us had stayed in a B&B before. Old Bear is not your foo-foo, gold-plated, schmoozy hotel. This is where a real vacation happens. A perfect place to relax and get away from all the noise. I was a little apprehensive with all the "sharing" you have to do.But we luckily booked the room that has a private bath and the room that has a private 1/2 bath, so the accommodations were perfect for the 5 of us. We're already talking about booking the whole house one weekend and bringing up more friends! Watch out David & Maxine! We're taking over! Anyway, David and Maxine are two of the nicest people I've ever met. So easy to talk to, comfortable and fit our personalities perfectly. And they have 2 of the sweetest dogs. Pepper's a little more shy than Heidi, but both hard to resist if you're an animal lover. And breakfast!! Eggs, fresh baked muffins, fresh fruit, a baked artichoke dish that I don't even know what it's called but should be called Heaven Casserole, or something. We also made friends with a regular of the Old Bear. We plan on keeping touch with him so we can meet up in Pine Mountain again. And you can come and go as you please. Another couple staying there, who also attended the wine tasting event, were doing their own thing, coming and going, and David and Maxine were just as nice to them as they were with us. Takes about an hour and a half to get there from the Pasadena area (granted, we didn't hit traffic to and from) but well worth the drive. My awesome sister and friends, David, Maxine, Pepper, Heidi and meeting new friends couldn't have been a better weekend for us. (The wine helped too!) read more

My wife and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary in Pine Mountain Club at the Old Bear Bed and Breakfast. We have been very busy, in the middle of school and work, and needed a refreshing getaway. This was perfect. The hosts, Dave and Maxine, were born to run a bed and breakfast. They are friendly, accommodating, generous and fun to be around. They have five rooms to choose from, and we stayed in the Garden Room. It was cozy, warm and had it's own tv/dvd player, comfortable bed and homey feel to it. Our hosts informed of us several hiking trails, and we went on two of them. One to a small waterfall and the other to a view overlooking Pine Mountain Club. They were both fun, easy, and great hikes. They also recommended several restaurants to us, offered to let us borrow snow sleds if we wanted, provided us with popcorn, snacks, coffee, etc. and free reign of any movies they had. The house was clean, well maintained and only a 5 minute walk to the heart of pine mountain club (it's not very big so everything is pretty close) If you want a great getway trip to relax and recuperate, or just want a fun weekend away with your love, this is the place to go. Dave and Maxine were also very good at not meddling with our privacy. We had great conversations with them when we arrived and at breakfast in the morning, but they did not pester us. They know the perfect balance of interaction vs privacy. (Breakfast was delicious BTW!) You won't be disappointed. If you want a 5 star hotel with the hustle and bustle of the city, go to LA, but if you want a 5 star experience, surrounded by peacefulness and quiet, check it out! This B & B in the little mountain village of Pine Mountain Club is a rare and delightful find. David and Maxine are the best hosts ever, so accommodating, and always make their guests feel like they are home with family. We have been coming there for years and each time love the experience. We just spent a delightful holiday at the Old Bear B&B. Our hosts, Maxine & Dave, could not have been more gracious. The lodge-like inn is charmingly decorated, our cozy Garden Room a delight--with a stunning view of the pines. We took several beautiful hikes nearby and enjoyed encountering the "white necklace" squirrels, darting jackrabbits, blue jays and other birds we don't get to see in the city.
