Nestled across the street from red lobster is a little known Asian buffet. It's never seemingly crowded during the day mostly because I think they do takeout. They have senior prices. Hubs and I like to go during the day and we have our choice of what we want to eat. Although standard fair for a buffet, occasionally they do have oysters and other seafood dishes. But you know me, I'm allergic to shellfish and seafood and of course gluten. Other than for one surprising day when we found out that tapioca pudding apparently is not gluten-free I have had no issues. Old China Buffet isn't the kind of place you pass by and think, "Oh yeah, I want to eat there." From the outside and honestly inside too it looks like time stopped in the 80s, but that actually adds a certain charm. The food, on the other hand, was delicious. Their salt-and-pepper chicken was a bomb, the ribs were amazing, the black pepper beef was super good, and the lo mein was excellent too. The chicken skewers and variety of vegetables were also really tasty. There are tons of different food options. It's family-owned, and the best part? This is better than it looks from the outside of the building. It is family owned with a friendly staff who works hard and keeps it clean. There are 7 buffets and one is where you can select ingredients for grilling. Several types of sushi and some great combos of veggies also meats. I am pleasantly surprised. The sign says under new management so we stopped in--the salt and pepper shrimp--cold, the rice--cold and stale, the shrimp/crab mix was lukewarm. The crab salad that should be cold was warm. The chicken wings were cold and dried out. They said they would make some new ones--2 minutes. 20 minutes later, we were still waiting. Very bad experience! When I told manager that no one told us the new hit chicken wings were sitting on the buffet (though we didn't see anyone bring food out), he said "don't tip them!" Great management! Hibachi grill. I can't tell if it's the sauce or noodles that had a sour/rotten odor but it was so bad that I saw several hibachi plates that were set to the side. The salt and pepper shrimp used to be their staple. Two trips in a row the salt and pepper shrimp was flavorless. Sad to see the quality of the restaurant go downhill but I don't think I can go back. I read the reviews before going to eat there and was a little skeptical at first. However, I realize that some people are just hateful people and will post lies just because they are "haters" and they want a discount on their meal. Unfortunately, I know people who post "stuff" just to get a free or discounted meal. I went with a friend who is quite "selective" when it comes to eating foods prepared by others. Well, he was pleased with the food, the staff, and the overall experience. I enjoyed myself so much that I took two of my cousins out to eat there on my second visit. I could have chosen anywhere in Battle Creek to eat. They enjoyed it also. My Chinese partner actually spoke to the cashier in their native Mandarin. I had no difficulty communicating in English with their workers. This restaurant will be part of my regular restaurant rotation. Searched Chinese takeout my area. Old China super buffet was listed. Went to their website and placed an order. After ordering I noticed one of my items was charged wrong. I ordera small soup the was listed @ $3.00, yet the amount charged was $6.95. When I got to the restaurant I asked why the charge was wrong. They said it was a Door-Dash charge. I already left a Google Review, but felt it was absolutely necessary to leave one here as well, to ensure more people see this! TLDR: Roach found in food. Owner still charged us half price. Stopped by at dinner time with my husband around 7:00 PM. Originally wanted to go to the Japanese restaurant just down the road next door, but they were closed (even though they said open on Google maps). Came in, both of us ate one plate. I finished just before him, and left to grab a second plate of food. While I was loading up my plate, my husband grabbed my arm and brought me back to the table to show me his plate. In the sauce (I believe either General Tsao or Honey chicken sauce) was what was CLEARLY a cockroach (body shape, antennas, 6 legs with little spindles off of it). My husband immediately brought this to the owner's attention, who inspected it and then initially claimed it was just a part of a vegetable. After my husband refuted this, the owner then conceded that it was an insect, but not a roach... The owner's explanation was that sometimes the vegetables from Meijer still have some insects on them but not to worry about it and he would only charge us for one person instead of two. My husband and I decided to just pay for the one plate (as he was given a daily meal stipend by the company he was training with while we were up here in Battle Creek). If we did not have that stipend, we would have fought even the one plate charge. In the end, we just drove down the street and got Arby's instead. I was craving Chinese food (I'm 7 months pregnant...) but was far more happy to eat any food that did not contain insects in it. I have been to the Old China Restaurant two times now, and it has been a good experience. It is located on Capital Avenue just North of I-94 right across from Red Lobster in Battle Creek. This Chinese place is both a buffet and a Mongolian BBQ. The food is fresh and hot. The Mongolian BBQ is pretty good with a nice selection of meat and veggies that can be grilled. If you want tofu, you will need to ask the cook since they do not keep it in the BBQ area. Overall, Old China Restaurant is a good value with very tasty food. I would recommend this place if you want casual and quick Chinese food. read more

We have a rule about small-town Chinese food... It goes something like, "No." But this place is my Grandma's favorite, so we tried it. Actually, as far as these things go, it was pretty tasty. Lots of grease, little to no actually vegetarian options, but the sauces were interesting. There's also a grill where they'll stir fry your selections, so there's a few options there, too. I cannot tell how much MSG is used in the sauces, but it seemed that is was light. It was more Cantonese style, with most dishes mildly spiced. People are confusing "Old China Buffet" with "Old China Restaurant". Old China Buffet is world class mega-buffet with hundreds of items to choose from and its all great. They also have a sushi bar, and a stir fry bar where you pick you meats and veggies and they grill it up in front of you. Also a huge salad bar. Old China Restaurant went out of business. They had only three buffet bars and a salad bar. And they waited until all the items were gone before replenishing. read more

This place is pretty good. Some of the food is good. Other dishes are bad. There is a good selection, and they now have the hibachi as part of the buffet. They also have sushie. Their crab Rangoon's are my favorite! It's good for kids. And on a Friday at 2pm is is perfectly quiet without being the only ones in here. The deserts are not good. For a buffet with Mongolian BBQ, this place offers a wide selection at a pretty decent price. The space is clean, and the variety of food should work for just about anyone. I found out about this place recently when my wife took me there for lunch. The all you can eat buffet makes it a good place for lunch, or when you are really hungry. I went back just recently and thought I'd take note of a few of my favorite dishes to supplement my review. Their bourbon chicken is very good and probably the best I've had at a traditional Chinese buffet. In general, their fried items are very good and lack that weird taste you sometimes get. This includes the sweet and sour chicken, the crab rangoons, the frog legs, and others. Even their sesame and general tso's dishes are good. I sometimes find that the quality drops greatly from takeout to buffet but these are solid. Old China also has a beef and carrot (almost "pot roast") looking dish that is a surprise superstar. The beef is incredibly tender, lean, and flavorful. When I first eyed it, I expect something tough, fatty, or dry but it was none of those things. Sure, there's duds like any other place but the overall quality of the food is very well-executed for a buffet. read more

We ended up here after visiting Binder Park Animal Zoo. Whenever I have a choice with theme parks or museums? I prefer to dine outside the park. Disney is the exception, since just getting out of Disneyworld is the equivalent of a marathon. We ate breakfast, visited Binder (awesome park, highly recommend) and then avoided the overpriced restaraunts in Binder by reminding the kids that a Chinese buffet lurked only a few minutes away.... ...we were not disappointed. :) $8.99 per adult, half that for kids. This includes sushi and hibachi grill cooked to order. Pick out the raw materials you want, and specify a sauce and bingo - your fave dish.There is a wait, so if you have kids, feed and get them settled first, then go get your hibachi set up, pick out a place of stuff from the buffet and put that on your table, then pick up your hibachi - this gives you time to pick YOUR dish out of a line up. Buffet has all of the stir-fry favorites and a few I rarely see, plus some US favorites (mac and cheese, salads, even mozzarella sticks) and the even have excellent baked salmon, shrimp and crab. Service is not attentive, but plates get picked up, refills as necessary (just ask) and the place was clean. Even the bathrooms. I saw ONE fly on one of the fruit trays. ONE. Since this was early July and the place was crazy busy? Seems fair. Did I mention it was cheap too? I highly recommend, and will return if/when we visit Binder Park again. read more

Not a comfortable or good dining experience. Way different than during the day. So when we pay our bill we get charged full price and I asked why when they had no food. I was told we should of asked if there something we wanted made. Didnt realize that we need to ask for fresh food at a buffet. Lesson learned not to go around 9pm or later. read more

Average food, but excellent selection - there are rows and rows of foods to choose from, so you're bound to find something you like; from the usual Chinese selections (quite the variety!) to a salad bar, and for the picky eaters - even mac & cheese and mozzarella cheese sticks! Mostly I go for the Chinese chicken dishes, since I wonder about the quality of other meats at places like this. For the price, it's worth it to come here. It seems the buffet foods are fairly fresh and replenished often enough, since nothing looked dried out like it had been sitting out for hours. I ordered take out from here and was not impressed. My chicken was obviously old and had been sitting out for a while because it was tough and overall inedible. My rice was dry and had peas in it, which was odd to me. There's not much variance in taste across different types of dishes. My sesame "chicken" (if you can even call it chicken) tasted oddly similar to my boyfriend's general tso dish.
