    the interior of a restaurant

You know you are in a rough part of town when you walk into a convenience store and there is a bulletproof glass-encased Western Union check cashing booth, a large array of malt liquor selections but only one kind of White Claw, and an employee and customer are having an open conversation about crystal meth and how it alters your appearance. But tucked away inside this dilapidated part of east Burlington is a true diamond in the rough: Old Fogies. OF is very cute, is run by a very cheerful and helpful staff, and serves up a fine lunch. I ordered a Reuben with potato salad and a sweet tea. The Reuben was beautiful, with a flat and crispy exterior and a warm and tasty interior. Either they have a sandwich maker appliance or the sandwich maker person is a sandwich grilling master. It was delicious. Note: they put dijon mustard on it instead of the traditional thousand island. The potato salad was very good. A bit mild (nothing Texas Pete couldn't fix), though, but it had a delightful texture. The potatoes (red skin) were perfect--not too hard and not too soft--and very tasty. The sweet tea was excellent--a perfect amount of both tea and sugar. Just a fine sweet tea. I asked for a sample of the chicken salad, and it was EXCELLENT. A chicken salad melt from OF would surely be award winning. Maybe next time... OF is a really neat place. And from my experience, it lives up to its name. I am 50 and was easily the youngest customer in the place. I think that the pace, atmosphere, items on their somewhat limited menu appeal to members of the Silent Generation, the Baby Boomers, and perhaps some of Generation X. I do NOT see this place having a huge appeal to hipsters or millennials, or, thankfully, to hipster millennials, the most obnoxiously pretentious humans ever described in the annals of anthropology. Worth noting: I actually found this place by typing "hot dogs" in the Yelp search. They don't have hot dogs. They have mostly sandwiches. And no fries. Fortunately I knew this ahead of time because I looked at the menu. This is one of those places that charmed me so much that I can't stop thinking about it. Definitely worth a visit...if you're old enough.

Like eating at my mom's house but in a very good way. Get the chicken salad, very southern and very good.

I had heard their chicken salad was really good, so I ordered a scoop of that too, it is really good and I strongly recommend it.

I looked online for photos of it ahead of time, couldn't find any, so once we were seated I got directions to it and checked it out. It is simple and adequate but just not what I was looking for so my friend and I decided to order from the menu instead. We started with sweet tea and unsweet tea. The unsweet was nice, freshly brewed and not bitter in the least. The sweet tea was too sweet for my friend to drink so we had the waitress come back with an unsweet and mixed it half and half. I sipped it prior to the mix and wow, way too much sugar. I ordered the Chicken Pita and fries. The sandwich was delicious but despite having asked for cucumber sauce (you get a choice of ranch or cucumber) there was no sauce on it. The chicken was delicious though and nicely seasoned, plenty of onions, and the pita was fresh. I'm not a big fan of crinkle fries but they were a solid 3, as good as crinkle fries can be in my opinion. My friend ordered chicken pie, fried okra, sweet potato, and cornbread. The chicken pie looked more like chicken ala king, not enticing, and no topping or crust. So odd. The flavor was not good, bland and just odd for something served as chicken pie and in the south. The okra seemed homemade and was good, and the sweet potato was fresh and tasty. The cornbread is sweet cornbread and was moist. I had quite a bit of tea so I visited the restroom before we left. Big mistake. The toilet paper was just a big roll balanced on the handicap rail, the paper towels for drying your hands was the same, and the floors and door going in and out were dirty...as in most likely not cleaned well in quite some time. Will I return? Not sure. There are limited dining places in Burlington that are not fast food so perhaps, but I certainly hope they pay better attention to cleaning going forward. When a public space looks like that restroom, it makes me wonder what the behind-the-scenes spaces look like.

I've been to a few First Watch locations in Ohio so when it came to Burlington I decided to go once…read morethe initial crowds died down since I didn't remember the food being that memorable. I went early one Saturday morning before the rush (crowds were appearing by the time we left at 9:30a) and were quickly seated in a booth by the window with lots of natural light. The restaurant was clean and well appointed with modern rustic decor and our waitress was super attentive and friendly. I did a bit of research before ordering to only order the most popular dishes in hope of making some memories this time around. I ordered the morning meditation juice which was a perfect mix of their fresh squeezed orange juice, lemon juice, beet juice, turmeric, ginger and agave nectar. Perfect way to start my morning in the sunlight. For my main breakfast entree I got the lemon ricotta pancakes which came with 2 HUGE pancakes the size of the plate. Even though the lemon curd appeared to be a dollop, it was enough for the whole dish since the lemon was very prominent to the point syrup was not needed. The berries were fresh and the pancakes were cooked to perfection (soft with lightly crispy edges). I also enjoyed a hot cup of table side coffee with my drink. I drink it black so I found the plain coffee to have a nice flavor and wasn't bitter at all. Now the million dollar bacon ehhhh.... I heard someone ask if they were thick, not at all. I found the honey to overpower the other seasonings so it was just basic bacon with honey in my opinion. Not worth the almost $7 price tag or the million in the name. If I am in the mood for a solidly good fresh breakfast in a nice atmosphere I'll be sure to stop by, but I wouldn't wait longer than 15 minutes for it.
