As I arrived at my 666th review here on Yelp, I began contemplating what I could possibly review that would be worthy of such an occasion. Having a dark sense of humor, I began contemplating both my past and present journeys through Indy's more haunted spots and locations with a history of evil and, in most cases, either found them not appropriate for Yelp or inappropriate review. While I briefly contemplated either a review of an Indiana Satanic church (Yes, we have them!) or a visit up to Hell, Michigan, I settled on a revisit to this location that turned the old Randolph County Infirmary/Asylum into one of Winchester, Indiana's few touristy spots. If you know me, then you know that while I do review most businesses for accessibility I'm also a pretty adaptable wheelchair user who regularly does long-distance events and who joined Yelp down in the incredibly not wheelchair friendly Catacombs. In other words, I tend to go where I want whenever possible even if it's not wheelchair friendly. The Asylum is not actually wheelchair friendly, though it's better than you might expect. If you have mobility issues, you might want to contact them in advance or ensure you have a companion with you for assistance. As a building built in 1899, it is exempt from ADA laws. In its early days, the nearly 50,000 square foot building housed six wards, several private rooms, a kitchen, laundry facilities, and separate dining rooms for men and women. It also had several other features on the adjacent property including a cemetery 230 yards northwest of the "home." Over the years, the facility served different populations including the poor, orphans, physically and cognitively disabled, single mothers, and the elderly. In 1994, the facility was bought from the county and turned into the Country Care Center. Around 2008-2009, Country Care Center closed and the facility was used for county storage until current owners came along in 2016 with the stated intention of using the facility as a paranormal attraction. I mean, seriously, do you know a single old asylum that isn't haunted? The treatment in these facilities was typically quite lacking - even in this type of setting, which certainly wasn't a Central State type place but still had its share of tragedy. The current owners have done a nice job of creating a functional setting for paranormal investigations, several videos from which are located on The Asylum website. The website features a wealth of information about the history of the facility along with current information about visits for investigations - this allows for overnight visits. While it's certainly not inexpensive, this is frequently done in groups and that certainly helps defray the costs. The Asylum, to my understanding, is still currently under a contract which means that actual production companies cannot be accommodated. The facility also does not have heat at this time, though they are working on this issue and that may change in the future. I should note that they do occasionally have special events that may include productions - look under the events tab of their website for more info. They even had a Christmas event this past holiday season. I really respect what they're doing here and the fact they've been respectful to the cemetery within the area. There's also said to be unmarked graves. While The Asylum is being utilized for paranormal, the team behind all of this truly is respectful of historical buildings and that makes it all a little more special to me. I've been through Winchester, Indiana a couple times on fundraising events and, indeed, all of Randolph County is pretty sparse in terms of tourist options. However, you have the Randolph Inn where you can stay and enjoy yourself in a small, friendly county and this pretty remarkable setting where you never quite know what you'll encounter!

Lewisburg Haunted Cave is always an amazing time! The atmosphere alone is spooky. The last 2…read moreyears they have done a special flashlight tour for younger kids to see the cave. There are no actors scaring them; but they get to experience the animatronics. They had workers lined up along the way to pass out candy and answer any questions about the cave. My daughter is still a little nervous about haunted houses, so this perfect for her. I have gone to the cave for years during their spooky time and it's always amazing. Go check it out if you have the ability!!

Lots of air puffs, ppl jumping at you, machines jumping at you. The machines tend to jump out a little close so that made it scarier. There was only one time it was pitch dark and one time you had to squeeze thru which was not good for my claustrophobia. Just when you think you're done, you're not! One more haunt at the end. There's a little drink stop with beebs and photo ops. They make you wait before starting to make sure there is ample space between groups. The Old Whitley County Jailhouse is a massive sight to behold. This elaborate structure was…read morecompleted in 1875 by architect J.C. Johnson. At the time, the building had a dual purpose to serve as the county jail and it housed the county sheriff. The reason for this setup was so the sheriff could keep an eye on his prisoners. The jailhouse was in operation for many decades. The latter part of its time, the jailhouse served as a county office up until the mid-80's when they moved their operations to modern facilities a block away. Today, the jailhouse lies dormant 11 months out of the year. Age and neglect has left this building in a deteriorated state. The current owner repurposed the jailhouse to operate once a year as a haunted house in October. You will find haunted house props strewn along the exterior but don't be fooled by the façade. Paranormal investigators have visited the space and they lay claim to believe ghostly activity lies within its confines. These investigators believe they are the ghosts of former inmates, most notably, the tortured soul of their notorious prisoner, Charles Butler. When we arrived, the building was closed for the season. From the outside, I was already getting a creepy vibe simply from taking these photos. I kid you not. I did feel a bit of the chills and I was at least 25 feet away from the entrance doors. Brave souls beware and prepare to be spooked!

The haunted hay ride was actually super fun and surprised us by having 2 dance number scenes. The weather was divine and it was so nice to roll through all of the fun scenes they have set up with the breeze going. Some of the scenes felt like we went through them too quickly to get to see everything, but others you could really see all of the detail they put into it. The slaughter barn was very quick to get through- even when haunted houses aren't scary I like when they are big and you get to walk around in the spooky rooms they have set up. The haunted hay ride was the best part of the night by far. One thing none of us liked was that one of the characters that wander around to entertain guests who waiting in line, buying concessions, etc kept very quickly circling around everyone while pulling a wagon that had a duck caged in it. It couldn't even sit or get comfortable because it was constantly bracing for turns and bumps. A fake duck glued to the cage or no duck at all would have sufficed. Not sure why live animals need to be toted around as props. We had purchased our tickets online during pre-sale, so it was a 2-for-1 deal. We definitely wouldn't come back if we had to pay full price, but I do think my brother with autism would like this, so we may bring him here next year.

While in line there were about 4 characters that would walk through scaring people which kept it interesting while waiting. The actors did really well throughout. After an hour wait we got in the in hayride which lasted about 15-20 min. They take you out far away so you don't see or hear anything. They have about 4 of these tractors so the line moves fast. They had some similar aspects from other hayrides and some unique scenes I had never seen before. People were flying around on ziplines which was really cool. Highly recommend. Didn't do the slaughter barn because it honestly didn't look that appealing. The line was way longer for the hayride and $2 more. I could tell the attraction was the hayride here. They charge $2 if you use card so I suggest paying in cash. They have areas with bonfires to enjoy. They have a consession stand with snacks and merch to purchase. Really nice huge farm. Great haunt!

Last night was the third time I attended Harvest Nights. This was the first time I arrived before it was dark so it was less spooky and a bit more wholesome in the daylight. We arrived at 7 and stayed until about 9 pm to experience everything lit up after dark. When you arrive, you're surrounded by stacks of pumpkins in every size, shape, color and type imaginable. Beautiful Fall arrangements are everywhere you look. The Fungi Forest was something new I haven't seen before. Very cool! I felt a bit like Alice in Wonderland encompassed by giant mushrooms towering above illuminated by strategically placed neon lights. One of the highlights of the event was the Cutwater Lounge--a 21+ space upstairs in the Lily House transformed into "Mischief Manor" only for Harvest Nights. The bartender told me this was the first year having this feature. We had a flight of the Cutwater alcoholic beverages that included a snack mix of tasty treats. The Mule and Espresso Martini were our favs with the margarita coming in 3rd. Cutwater's take on the Lemon Drop (which is a drink I typically enjoy) was strong yet tasted a bit watered down. The adult only experience wasn't very well marked (it's upstairs) and signage in general--starting at the parking lot entrance--needs improvement. I'm not sure we would have known about the adult area had it not been for the nice lady who sold us some yummy sweet potato fries with sage and bourbon maple dip. The Spider Stomp, Ghost Train and light show projected onto the Lily House all add to the overall experience. The seasonal food and drink options are great albeit a bit pricey. Passed on the $12 Bavarian pretzel but had to try Elysian Pumpkin Ale and wanted to try the cider but $14 was a little steep. It's not necessary to spend $20 for premium parking that they pressure you to purchase when you first pull into the lot. I recommend getting there early and wearing some of your best walking shoes. It's a cashless campus so good to keep that in mind. Love Newfields and can't wait for Winterlights in a couple months!

There were tons of decorated pumpkins throughout Newfields. There is a food/drink garden area in the middle with benches to take a break if you want. We ordered the Marsh & Mallow Spooky Campfire Cocoa (spiked hot cocoa) and we all liked it and was comforting on this chilly night. The Lily house had a long line but we enjoyed going in and seeing all the spooky details inside.
