While I have coming here since the late 90's I haven't been back since I moved to California almost 9 years ago. So I had to take advantage to take some of my beloved bread and pretzels back home with me while it town. The owners always have been good friends and I glad I got to see them before leaving town. I have been trying to come here since I moved to Phoenix and the hours are a bit wonky, but finally I made it in this weekend and so glad I stopped by. I really like good German bread, German fitness bread and some other random German/Austrian food items. The store is quite big and I came in here around 2pm, about one hour before they closed and pretty much all of the fresh baked bread was gone, that's a good sign. I do like a really good rye bread, and they had a few small round loaves of coarse rye left, so I asked for one. The owner was also nice to slice it. There are also larger coarse rye loaves but since I hadn't been here before, I opted for the small one, in case I didn't like it. But, I will tell you, the coarse rye is excellent, I will be getting the bigger loaf next time I am here. I also found Manner wafers here and they carry lots of Haribo candies here (I'm not really a fan) too. They also have plenty of fresh baked items but all of their pretzels were gone, bummer, I'll be back next time for these. They also have streussel of all kinds, palm cookies, and other German treats. I don't have that much a sweet tooth so passed on all the pastries in their case. They also had two tables of 25% off items. They have imported fitness bread starting at $10, but I can find this over at Nature's Grocers for half the price. They also have random German T shirts, kitchen plates, etc. for sale. And, they have gnomes here for sale! I love gnomes and wanted to buy all of them haha! Gnomes are my favorite! Owner was really nice and even gave me a card as I told her sometimes I can't make it in early enough and she said to call her and she will put items aside for me. Really nice mom and pop shop of German goods and I truly hope they survive as they were complaining to other customers about the tariffs. I've passed the place numerous times. Finally made a stop. I had been craving a good pretzel. They delivered the goods. And have several types and shapes. I also grabbed an amazing cherry pastry. Don't bother going with the bakery closing on 4/30/2026. Very little in stock and not quite the excellent quality we've been used to for years. Wonderful baked goods, warm & friendly staff that remembered and specially acknowledged my German mother's every visit (Irmgard Copeland). She ate only their Farmer's breads and pretzels, and enjoyed their special treats during holidays such as Christmas. She said anything else was just "mushy" and emphasized that their baked goods were so good due to the imported European flour from Germany that they used. Our family celebrations always included items from "The "German Bakery." I'm so sorry to hear that they are closing. It was a very important part of my mother's life and legacy. Dark Rye - YES PLEASE. I can eat a whole loaf in 2 days I dont do carbs so when I do this is where i stock up on my worth it carbs. Besides the bread, anything with cheese in it is delish! Sure, you like fruit suff, apples, cherries, yes they have sweets with that too. Im just a sweet cheese girl! If you have your kiddo with you getting them one of the fun marzipans is a must!. The pretzel sticks are great i have to buy enough to have at home because usually 2 disappear during the car ride. So consider that when making your purchase. FYI they are great with soups and stews instead of bread or a roll. The gals are fantasticastic!! The only negative thing is the pricing, higher prices b/c its a small local business so their costs are higher. With that said I still spend the higher $$ to support this place. LOVE IT!!! read more

Bakery with banking hours! Utter nonsense if I ever saw one. Hours are 9:30 to 5:30 closed Sunday and Monday. I came on Saturday afternoon and there was zero bread and no pastries at all. What this really means is that if you want some German freshly baked bread and you are a working 8-5, you might have one chance per week on Saturday morning and that's it. I asked owner when will they have more baked goods in the afternoon and she said if she knew answer to that question she would be better off playing lottery. Terrible attitude. So since they do not have baked goods, they do have lots of German specialty stuff. Soups in a bag, jams jelly chocolate and cookies. Pretty much everything you can find online but marked up. So if you want to shop for specialty items that you are not aware exist this just might be the place....and forget about the baked goods! read more

Long line is a good sign. Once I entered inside, the whole place smells like freshly made breads. Yes, they just made those breads and pastries. I planned to get my go-to cheese danish. Fortunately the person behind me told me that they have the best pretzel croissant. So I ordered both and they are so delicious. Cheese danish here is not the same like other places. What a great German bakery. We had a danish for breakfast that was enormous, two of us shared one. We picked up an apple strudel for dessert later and it was flaky and delicious. We enjoyed the fresh pretzels too. They have a wide variety of German groceries, including spaetzle noodles, which I'm too lazy to make from scratch. I don't live close to Old Heidelberg so I'd forgotten what a little gem it is. On my recent visit I picked up some pretzel horns that were fantastic! The bakery also has bread and pastries that look amazing. My favorite thing to do is peruse the small market of imported goods. My family goes crazy over Haribo candy which they have a vast collection of. The market also has a lot of chocolate, licorice, and grocery items such as späetzle, sausages, etc. My most coveted purchase was a jar of delectable sour cherry jam. It just doesn't taste like anything you can buy here in the states. I need to head back to Old Heidelberg this month, as I heard they might be getting special Christmas items in. My son in law brought me some pumpernickel bread to me and loved it. There are only a few places that make pumpernickel bread like in Germany. It was like a rye bread and they sliced it thin. My dad used to make it from an old Prussian family recipe and it wasn't the same. I didn't want it sliced, but maybe he didn't know.
