May be the best steak I've ever eaten, and I've eaten many. I used to my business travel around passing through Columbus so I could eat here. I asked the locals where to get BBQ and they told me that but also said, I needed to check out Old Hickory. Boy did they steer me in the right direction. Being from NC I am not into steaks and now I get why-NC does not have a place (that I have found) that makes steaks this good. It's an old, dark dive that screams old school restaurants in the country. The very best steak I have ever had and dagumit it's 9 hours from my home. My husband had been coming here since he was a kid and this was the first opportunity to dine here since we live in California now, but are about to build in Starkville. She brought our drinks right away. I ordered a rib eye, my husband a TBone, and I have to say both were done to perfection. The seasoning used is exceptional and delicious! Our meal came with a baked potato and salad. The pricing is very reasonable, which is why their customers are regular and frequently return. Listen, if you like steak, eat here. If you want a whimsical deconstructed salmon croquette or whatever, go elsewhere. I had the filet. It comes in one size, 8oz. It was a high-quality cut of meat, it was seasoned thoughtfully so that the flavor was predominantly the flavor from the meat, and it was cooked exactly as I ordered (medium rare). My wife had the sirloin, because that 's the only kind of steak she likes, and we had to drive 40 miles to get one (since 44 Prime in Starkville stopped serving their su vied sirloin). It comes in one size, 16oz. She said it was delicious, but I think sirloin is icky so I have to take her word for it. It looked and smelled like a person who knew what they were doing had cut it, seasoned it, and prepared it. There are four items on the menu; we had half of them. The other half is T-bone steak and tenderloin steak. Each steak is served with a potato and salad and a not-mentioned-on-the-menu piece of Texas toast. Your potato options are butter and sour cream or butter only; your salad includes lettuce and a tomato wedge and one of five or six dressing choices. Did I mention appetizers? No? That because they don't need 'em. How 'bout a dessert? Better bring something from home or go by the yogurt place next to Sweet Peppers (#shoplocal). Don't eat cows? Enjoy watching your friends and neighbors living their best life -- no pigs, birds, fish, or New Age protein alternatives are available. Next, ambience and service. The parking lot was full on a non-game-day Saturday (locals know what I mean) at 5 p.m. We walked in and the person at the counter said "sit wherever." We didn't see an open table, and she explained there were more tables in the back. Following a serpentine labyrinth past a diner setup, sketchy-looking booths, another diner setup, past the server hallway, and the back room was a cinder-block-and-ceiling-tile space with additional tables. The tables were typical diner, covered with plastic red-and-white-checked tattered plastic tablecloths. The chairs were vinyl covered late '70s diner style. Dare I say, unpretentious? We sat at a four-top and quickly met our friendly and attentive server who gave us menus (we learned from listening to other diners that few need to see a menu, seeing as how there are only four choices, but it was our first time) and took our drink orders (free refills on water and tea, but sodas and beers are sold by the can). When she came back with the drinks Kim ordered the sirloin, and the server surprised us by saying "honey, don't order that." We explained that we drove 40 miles to get sirloin, but we were interested to know why she didn't recommend the sirloin. She explained that people in the region don't know sirloin like Texans know sirloin, and they are often taken aback by its distinct flavor and lack of tenderizing fat content. Kim was like "that's exactly the way I like it; make my medium well!" The server sent the order back, brought our salads, and kept our drinks refilled until she brought the steaks and cleared the salad plates. She confirmed we were pleased with the steaks, and once we were done she brought the ticket and told us to pay the cashier on the way out. It was about $75, we tipped another $25, and carried home 8 ounces of sirloin for sandwiches tomorrow. read more
