We stopped in for lunch while in town for MSU student orientation. This is a local well known establishment and there were many locals inside. The parking can be interesting and the signage is very confusing because it says permit parking...we weren't sure if that was for patrons or not. When you enter the establishment, you are overwhelmed with signage asking you to make sure and close the door and various other signs. With that being said, we did not see the sign that said they were out of all drinks with the exception of tea. It would have been nice to be told that when we ordered a soft drink You order as soon as you walk in and then they bring the food to the table. This is a little overwhelming as you can not see the menu until your turn to place the order and with the line forming behind you, that can be stressful. The food is decent, but nothing spectacular. My son had the pulled pork sandwich with Mac n cheese and enjoyed it. My husband had the 2 piece catfish platter and while he enjoyed it, it wasn't the best he has ever had. He said he would probably try something else if we come back. I had the pulled pork grilled cheese with onion rings and I really enjoyed my meal. There was a good amount of pulled pork with some yummy pimento cheese and it was toasted perfectly. The onion rings had a nice light batter, but were served perfectly crisp. I would definitely order my meal again if we come back and the portion was so large that my husband and I thought we could definitely split it. I like the variety, they have blackened catfish and fried. They have items for kids and sweet potatoe and waffle fries. I asked if the catfish was gluten free, because at of places with use corn flour. They couldn't give me an answer so I went with the blackened fish. I was very excited to visit the Little Dooey, with such an esteemed reputation. The front counter staff were super friendly and helpful and the restaurant was clean and inviting. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. My sandwich arrived barely warm. The cheese was not fully melted. Overlooking that, it was a tasty combination. This review is a mixed bag due to the "tradition" of the location and history. First, if you are in Starkville then I think you have to go here. It is a landmark for lack of a better word. It is busy and a line is usually out the door. We really enjoyed talking to people in line who had been here many times. There is a large overflow parking lot that is monitored by security to ensure people are going to The Little Dooey. You order at the front and then find a seat (can be a task at times). They have Bbq, catfish, burgers, crawfish, etc. I saw lots of crawfish going out. I had the surf and turf with pulled pork and catfish filet. I had a side of cheese grits and onion rings. If I were only rating food it would honestly be around a 3. The pork was ok, the onion rings were overcooked and the cheese grits were tasty but lukewarm and too thick. However, the catfish was absolutely delicious! It was fresh and cooked just right. It had the perfect flakiness and taste. We actually met the owner and had some good conversation with him. There is some outside seating which looked large. However, there was a private party so I couldn't get a good perspective of what the outside area entails. Overall, I recommend The Little Dooey because I believe the experience is worth the trip and the menu has a wide variety of items that anyone could enjoy. read more

After Googling, "souveniors to buy in MS groceries," Little Dooey mild BBQ sauce popped up. With that said, I knew I had to visit the restaurant to see how their BBQ sauce is before I bring home some for myself. The restaurant definitely has the southern charm. Although it looks small on the exterior, I was surprised to find three different room compartment. Being in Starkville, the restaurant was decorated with MS State University. Being the tourist that I am, I ordered the "Mississippi Beef Brisket Plate (comes with 2 sides; and yes, because it has the name MS in it). To decide on the sides, I asked which ones were local favorites. My cashier mentioned, onion rings, baked beans, cole slaw, and turnip greens. I opted for the onion rings and cole slaw. This is the first and only time I've tried MS beef brisket, so I am not sure if all MS beef brisket has the same taste and texture. The texture of the brisket is definitely different than what I'm used (having beef brisket in CA and TX). The MS beef brisket (at least here anyway) was sliced a lot thinner, not as moist, and has a "stringy" texture. Don't get me wrong... the brisket was GOOD. It just wasn't what I thought it would be. Was a surprise and definitely had flavor. The sides also did not disappoint. Anything fried from the south is an A++ in my book! The onion rings were huge and super crispy. Cole slaw was refreshing and paired well with all the fried/greasy food items. The plate also came with garlic toast. I wish they had side orders of that because I would've ordered more. Finally, the BBQ sauces (mild BBQ and hot BBQ sauce). Although they weren't anything extraordinary, it complemented well with the brisket. Parking is a little bit of a hassle but because of how delicious it is, it's understandable. The moment we walked in, we were greeted so politely by a gentleman that was multitasking on the phone while packing a To-Go order. IF YOU WANT GOOD BBQ, TWO BROTHERS IS YOUR BEST BET. Being new to the area, I decided to have dinner and stay for drinks when they opened the bar on a weekend night. First, the dinner was incredibly subpar. I was expecting some great southern BBQ, but was super unimpressed by the quality. Second, the service when you walk up to the counter to order was absolutely horrendous. I ordered with a smile on my face and even left extra for a tip, but was treated like a complete inconvenience. The person working the register refused to look at my group got super frustrated when I ordered a beer and she had to check my ID. Ignoring that, my friends and I decided to stay put and headed outside to the bar once the restaurant closed. The DJ and bartenders were the best part of my experience. The atmosphere was fun and they had a lot of outside space to hang out. After a few drinks we got an Uber to another bar, so I left my car in their huge parking lot. While I thought I was doing the responsible thing, I did not realize they have a contract with the worst towing company in town. The next morning I go to pick up my car right as the restaurant opened, but it had already been towed. I tried calling every police station in town because they legally have to report a towing, but they could not tell me where it was taken. After numerous calls to the restaurant, I was finally able to speak to a manager about the situation. He informed me that he specifically called the towing company on me even after I explained that I had been a paying customer and did not want to move my car in fear of drinking and driving. Essentially, I was told that I should have risked it and moved the car. The towing company they partner with charges college kids $300 (sometimes more because their prices are never consistent) and the owner lets them! This is an ongoing problem I have noticed while living here with money-hungry business owners in Starkville. I acknowledge the frustration with random cars parking in their lot, but to tow the car of a paying (and good tipping) customer who was doing the responsible thing is inexcusable. I have not gone back to the restaurant since, and will continue to tell people my age to avoid that place! read more
