This was disappointing. I loved my server- she was positive and tried to maintain a positive attitude despite our one hour plus wait once we ordered. I got chicken parmesan and smashed potatoes . The side was not hot, but warm. My chicken was warm, but delicious. My husband got the special- a strip steak with mushroom sauce. He had the potatoes and sautéed okra as sides. The potatoes were good, but the steak was badly trimmed and cool. It was completely unflavored. My daughter had the petit filet and potatoes and grits. The filet had a large seam of fat running through it and the only flavor was the over seared burnt taste. The youngest enjoyed the salmon. We liked the creme brûlée. Overall, I will not be going back. Too long of a wait and too loud. Conversation was difficult. read more

I was pleased to see a "good" restaurant open at this location in Jasper. Too many fried bar food options and not enough "good" places to eat. The menu is varied and I enjoyed my sirloin salad. The strawberry cheesecake is awesome. The only bad comment I have is that they're not open Mondays and Tuesdays. What a gem to find in Jasper. Nice view outside (dog friendly-waiter even brought ours a bowl of water). Old historic brick ambiance on the inside. Right on Main St. Good food, decent prices. Quite a variety to choose. Calamari appetizer is a nice choice as it was very fresh and delicious. Ask for a local craft beer tasting board of 3 or 4 choices. (It was mentioned online but we did not see it on the menu. Will be back as there are so many things we have yet to try , especially some of their unique delicious looking specialty drinks. We had dinner with the grand kids, and I must say that the food was really not very good. My wife ordered spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer. It came out with a burnt black cheese topping. There were pita chips to dip with. The dip itself was pasty and lumpy. I ordered the southern Ruben. This was no way even close to a Ruben I am used to eating. Usually, a Ruben has sauerkraut but his had none. I was expecting something other than a barbeque with cheese. OK it said what it contained and that's fine but was not to my taste and still way to spicy for me. My wife had onion soup with a salad. The soup was thick and lumpy, not soup texture at all. The salad she had was a plain garden salad and that was fine. The kids had a hamburger and a cod gyro. The were happy with their selections. The kids drank a soda I had root beer. My wife had water. The final bill was over $120.00. Wait staff was OK and the ambience was nice as we sat on the porch. Next time, if we go back, we will definitely choose other menu options. read more

I wanted to love this restaurant based on appearances. The decor is great and menu looked good. BUT, remember what your grandmother would tell you: "Looks are deceiving"! The food and service are simply below par. At best, the food quality is Cracker Barrell-ish and the service has much to be desired. No bread or pickles or enticements come out with drinks - and water was brought 10 minutes after drinks.... Drinks were very yummy and had we not received those prior to finding out nothing we wanted for appetizers or main meal was available, we would have moved on. Ended up with mediocre salad, meatloaf and potatoes. We would have been better to look at the froze food aisle at Kroger. I want this restaurant to improve and make it in this fun little town but they will have to improve food quality and service. Everybody knows everybody in a small town so BE NICE and try harder. read more

My family of 5 went to the Old Mulehouse for the 1st time yesterday to celebrate my birthday. It was our first trip there and we just loved the inside of the restaurant. Exposed brick, back view of the mountains, super clean, wonderful breeze from the large fans in the ceiling. Everything was going great until we got our food. I ordered the fried chicken and once the server set my plate down my family looked at each other like "are you serious?" I got 2 pieces of chicken and I got a small chicken wing and a drumstick MUCH smaller than what you get in the grocery. They were mini. My father in law was like are you serious, those tiny tiny pieces of chicken for $16?? We said something to the waitress about asking for a thigh at least. She went and asked, came back & said it would be a $2 up charge. We were all like WOW. I could never in good faith serve something that small to a customer, I just couldn't do it (yes folks, it was that tiny). My mother and mother in law ordered the fish and the 2 pieces were pretty small as well. The portions overall are so small for what you pay for. We were really disappointed too because we just loved the vibe of the restaurant. It wasn't our servers fault I know, so we tipped her well, but we won't be back. read more

My family recently traveled to Big Canoe for my mom's 80th and we're lucky enough to find the Old Mulehouse as a reception for her birthday party. Lindsey Brandes ,the event coordinator, and her team were phenomenal! The service was five star and the food was delicious! The Mulehouse party room is the perfect place for a group to gather with it's rustic brick walls, gorgeous mountain views and games/books couch for the kids/adults to lounge. The room is an L shape which allows for a cocktail room and a dining room opposite, or just more dining tables, depending on what your needs are. Lindsey and her team had an amazing attention to detail. They thoughtfully had all my decorations set up beautifully and even had a special, beautiful velvet chair for the birthday girl! Lindsey had thought of everything from cake and present tables to hanging the birthday banner in the perfect place for pictures. The team took care of all of the details like cutting and serving the cake. My family couldn't stop talking about how the Old Mulehouse was the absolutely perfect place to celebrate! read more

We had an incredible experience at the Old Mulehouse. The food was perfectly cooked and delicious. My husband had the filet and I had the Grilled Chicken Gyro. For dessert we shared the pumpkin spice cheesecake. Our server Jake was fabulous. Friendly, knowledgeable about menu items, personable, efficient, and just a great guy! If your looking for excessive garlic and onions on everything, then you will like. But frankly other than dessert Garlic and onion were the only flavor options. I am really glad the Mulehouse is open for business again. They have used the time off to perfect a new fried chicken recipe called Pickens Chicken. I was able to try one of the first batches today and it was excellent. I highly recommend it. The service is friendly and helpful. We had a fantastic experience at the Old Mulehouse. Our server, Megan, was sweet, efficient, and knowledgeable, and all the food was excellent! We especially loved the Scotch egg (OMG) and pretzel appetizers. Seriously, those alone were worth the trip. My husband enjoyed the burger and I had the steak salad. The steak was excellent, and I really loved the salad although it had a little too much dressing for my taste. Maybe get the dressing on the side. We had the creme brûlée for dessert- I didn't quite know from the menu description what to expect but it was absolutely delicious! We've had creme brûlée all over the country and this one was one of the best. I tried both of the ciders on tap and my husband loved the Kentucky mule cocktail so much he had to recreate it at home tonight. Overall a wonderful meal, great people, and a very cool location. We had high expectations for this place. Maybe it was an off night, but for our first experience... I can't say we will return as it was pretty bad. Positive: The restaurant has a great atmosphere and we love the deck. Negative: We should have turned around and walked out when the server told The hostess the management said not to seat anyone for at least 30 minutes because the kitchen was overwhelmed. The restaurant was not even a quarter full. Once we were finally seated the server quickly brought out our appetizer, but that was the only thing that was quick. Drink took 30 minutes to get (no exaggeration) and it took an hour and a half to get our food. Keep in mind the restaurant wasn't that busy. The food was ok at best. Husband got the "filet" it was the saddest looking filet I have ever seen. All fatty and had a rancid taste. Terrible. He sent it back. Fish was ok. Gyro was pretty good. Burger was dry and bun was stale. Grecian potatoes were aight nothing special and needed salt. Oh and They were out of ginger beer and they are known for their mules. So, no Moscow mules at the old Mulehouse on a Friday night. ( why not have the manager run up to the local store and buy some? not A difficult ingredient to find). All in all... terrible service... super slow. Finally tried this place and it did not go well. Good service from the bartender but seemed like they must have sent out for the food. Very long wait for a couple of simple dishes. Caesar salad with chicken. Hard to mess up but they managed it, processed (or something) chicken at room temp with salad greens also at room temp.
