Appetizers (tuna, escargot) were delicious. Rappanhanock River Oysters were very mild with little salinity. Would have preferred a 2nd selection. Cowboy ribeye and regular ribeye steaks cooked medium rare were tasty but not tender and certainly not prime. I would expect prime steaks at the price for a renowned steak and seafood restaurant. Steaks were a disappointment and the primary reason for a 3 star rating. We will seek another place for steaks. Stuffed lobster was very good. I recommend Bookbinders as a special occasion, date night, or for any occasion when you want to impress someone . You'll get great service and food and the white tablecloth, finer dining experience. Just don't expect to walk out without paying the price for the experience. We were warmed by our Uber driver that the prices were not as easily swallowed as the delicious food would be. We had the escargot, a bottle of Pinot, clam chowder, the 12 ounce filet, 8 ounce filet with crab cake, and a side of mashed potatoes. The steaks were dynamite, the crab cake was delicious, mashed potatoes were perfect, chowder was good but a very small portion. One caveat to the food quality was the escargot. It was lacking flavor and was unfortunately the most lack luster I've had. Maybe it was just an off night...I can't recommend it based on my experience. If reserving a table, ask for a booth or any table that is not positioned in the middle of the room. The experience for us, despite the food being yummy, was less than great as we were seated at a 4 top in the center of the room. For a restaurant that advertises to be fine dining, the vibe was compromised and ambiance lacking for us due to being seated in the center of the room and the lights being so bright. So as we dined with a bill of $400, we were seated in the middle of the room with uncomfortably positioned table and very bright lighting that made us anxious rather than relaxed. That aspect was disappointing. The food and service were good and the wine was too. We are happy we tried them out and would go back when in Richmond again. I came here for thanksgiving and was glad I got to experience Bookbinders. I had the Rockfish and the filet, and the tenderness of the filet was on par with those 4 figure steakhouses and the rockfish was top shelf quality in terms of freshness and seasoned to perfection. Portion sizes are generous so get your appetite ready. I also appreciated the owner of the restaurant cared I had great experience and took my photo in front of the Christmas tree and even gave me a commemorative coin after asking me why I was in Virginia eating by myself on a holiday. What a huge waste of money!! This place is the furthest place away from a good seafood place or even restaurant! The service is mediocre and the food is average. Service-wise, we had employees try take our food not even half-eaten/finished! Had to wave and practically shout to get more drinks. Had to ask for plates and utensils. Food-wise, a microcosm of the whole thing, is they serve a below average Italian dressing as a mignonette for their oysters! It was disgusting and totally inappropriate! Everything else was average. Finally got a chance to explore this restaurant as I am a big foodie. We had a salad, crabcake, chocolate cake and my friends got scallops and salmon. I would say that the presentation is minimal however this is under the assumption that you add your own potatoes and green beans to your plate. As far as the flavors of the crabcake surely it was all crab of the sauce was quiet watered down and dilute in my opinion. The crab was good but probably three stars. It was missing the key flavor of old bay seasoning. The cake was dense and dry and not really palatable. I could see the hype to this place but I've definitely had better quality better tasting food for the price and therefore I'm giving this place three stars. read more

Recently had dinner at bookbinders about a week ago, and I have to tell you I was extremely disappointed. We have been coming to this restaurant for a number of years now obviously we came back because we always enjoyed. It had a good time good food and good atmosphere.. obviously with restaurants, things change and can happen this last visit left me very very disappointed. I ordered a ribeye steak for my entrée and as I always do, I ordered it cooked medium. The steak came out and as I cut into it, which was very difficult I found it tough, not even cooked close to being the proper way to the point where my knife would barely go through the cartilage, which didn't seem like it had been cooked at all and for ribeye. The steak was extremely tough. I am not and have never been a complainer when it comes to eating out, I always try to be considerate to the weight staff manager and whoever I deal with when I go to a restaurant so I after being extremely dissatisfied with the first steak, I politely asked my waitress to take a look at it and see what they can do to get me a better one to which she took it back and said we will try to get it right. The manager as well then came over and said the same now mind you my wife and son had pretty much gotten through their meal already. After returning with another steak. I took a look at it and again started attempting to cut it this time the steak didn't even seem like it was a ribeye And was also extremely tough and not cooked properly. I don't know if they had a chef in training or something, but whoever it was needed to be trained some more on cooking a steak properly still being extremely dissatisfied. I was going to send it back again, but my wife grabbed my arm because we were already there a while and said just wait. don't say anything and Maybe contact them after we left to which I did. I've called the restaurant a few times to speak to the manager to which I have not gotten a call back this really really disappoints me as that was a $60-$70 steak. I do not mind paying the price of an entrée at any restaurant as long as what I get is what I paid for in this case this was an extreme disappointment terrible and the worst steak I have ever had. I don't know if it's the grade of state that they are buying, but they need to rethink who they buy from but also they need to address a customer's concerns all total we spent over $300 that night and that was without a tip our waitress Jackie was very nice. Went with the family for Christmas dinner - they had a set menu, so I cannot speak to their 'regular' menu, only to what we experienced with the set menu. I have dietary 'issues' so checked out the set menu before I went and found it looks like they can accommodate nearly everyone's needs.... even with that set menu. Everything was SO good. Everyone was happy with what they ordered, although I can't remember what they got. I got: Shrimp cocktail appetizer - their cocktail sauce was VERY good, likely the best I've had Filet Mignon cooked medium rare - tender and tasty, this thing was cooked PERFECTLY Sorbet dessert - which was fine (I mean it's raspberry ice), I can't eat eggs or wheat so I was pretty limited as to selection, the waiter suggested the sorbet which hit the spot at the end of the meal I would TOTALLY go again and hope to visit them when I'm next in town. read more

My in laws made reservations for 4 easily and we came for a birthday dinner. They seated us right away and had special printed birthday menus. Parking was so easy just outside their doors. They seated us right away and the service was excellent. We got delicious wine to start and two appetizers. The Escargot was amazing and the Stuffed Mushrooms caps were delicious. A note on ordering, it's A La Cart. So you pick your main item/protein and then sauces or sides you might want. The sides are huge and shareable with the table as they are served on their own plates. I got the filet mignon cooked medium rare and it was delicious! I also got a side of béarnaise sauce. My husband got the sword fish and my father in law got the crab cake. We got the side of creamed spinach, the lobster Mac and cheese and Johnnie's potato's. Everything was delicious but the cream spinach was the best I've ever had. For those of you who follow my reviews closely (hi, Mom!), you probably find it odd that I'm reviewing a steakhouse. You know that when I go out to eat, I'm dealing with a combination of self-imposed and allergy-related dietary restrictions. But you also might notice what I call cultural meat exception (CME), in which this celiac/vegetarian-recently-turned-pescatarian throws the meat-related rules out the window, usually while traveling overseas. But overseas travel has been at a standstill for more than a year, so I recently decided to extend CME to domestic travel as I explore closer to home. It turns out 15 months of binge watching the Food Network can give you some pretty strange cravings. For me this manifested as a strong desire for the classic, some might say outdated, steakhouse experience. To be sure, the formal vibe (hello white tablecloths!) and the traditional fare at Bookbinders is not considered haute cuisine by all the hip youths, but it was exactly what I was looking for. And for a rare occasion like domestic meat exception, I was intent on pulling out all the stops with the 18 ounce ancho-rubbed ribeye, mashed potatoes, and of course (yes, you know it!) a wedge salad. I've found that many steakhouses rely on their name and reputation to get people in the door, then fail miserably when it comes to execution. But not Bookbinders; everything was perfect for the entire meal. Service was highly attentive, with constant drink/water refills and several of the customary manager check-ins. But of course the star of the show was the absolutely perfect ribeye. It was cooked to a juicy medium rare and packed with flavor from the chile rub and chimichurri. The crust combined beautifully with the tender fatty marbling for a great texture. I believe it to be one of the best steaks I've ever had, if not the best. The mashed potatoes made for a spot-on rich and garlicky accompaniment. The iconic wedge salad was textbook. Although we attempted unsuccessfully to change to an indoor table given the toasty June weather, we ended up loving the courtyard setting, especially after the sun went down and the lighting came up. Ordering gluten-free was a breeze with a clearly marked menu and lots of options, including a delicious gluten free chocolate dessert! All in all it was a perfect night and the exact meal I was craving. Whether it is a year, two, or ten before I eat meat again, I'd gladly choose Bookbinders again and again for all my guilty dietary exceptions! read more

What a great spot! As a traveler, I'm always pressed to find the best restaurants in the cities I travel to. Covid has made that even more challenging. When dining alone, I'm far more comfortable sitting at the bar than getting a table for one. While seating at the bar was limited, it was offered! Bookbinders did not disappoint. The bartender was attentive, polite, and conversational; and the service was excellent. I don't believe I used the same piece of cutlery twice. 5/5. Onto the food/bev. The bourbon selection was good. It wasn't over the top, but there were plenty of flavor profiles to pair with your food. I started with an Elijah Craig Small batch. Very generous pour! Glad I used Uber! I paired that with the prosciutto wrapped mozzarella. My intention was to just have a piece or two, but I found myself eating the entire serving - and quite frankly I had to talk myself out of eating the garnish. Very very good. The heirloom tomatoes were fresh and sweet, and the balsamic glaze was just perfect.... so much so, that it will return for the main course. For my entree, I had the petite filet finished with blue cheese (fromage), drizzled with more of that balsamic glaze (if you haven't before, please try it. Unbelievable). I also had the loaded baked potato. The steak was cooked to literal perfection. I'm certain that it was at LEAST 8 oz. but was certainly closer to 10 than 8. It was a great size petit cut. The broiled blue cheese and balsamic topping was simply the perfect conduit for a choice cut of meat. The glaze was so thick that the bartender offered to bring me a knife to scoop it out. The baked potato was a little on the cool side, but was delicious all the same. To be fair, I also came at opening time, and that's always a better side for the 7:30-8:00 crowd. The wine selection (bottle) was extensive. There were some excellent choices. Because I was alone, unfortunately I needed to find a decent wine-by-the-glass. I chose to pair my steak with the Routestock 29 Cabernet Sauvignon, and I have to say, you'd be very hard pressed to find a better pairing. I was very impressed! (I'll also be hunting a bottle of this for the house!) Somehow, against my better judgement, and because I was so pleased, I allowed myself to hear the dessert menu. Cheesecake, dark chocolate pate, chocolate cake, and creme brûlée... I opted for the latter because somehow it seemed lighter than the others... foolish. Gigantic portion. The custard was very creamy and smooth, and the brûlée was torched perfectly. This was another one where I promised I'd only eat half, and... well... another broken promise. I'm on my way to the hotel gym now to pay for my sins, and reflect on just how excellent of an experience this was. Dining here was a true pleasure, and I look forward to an encore performance. Old Original Bookbinders has a storied history in Philadelphia, and was my favorite restaurant in its heyday which ended in 2009. When looking up places to dine for my trip to Richmond I was ecstatic to discover that there was a Bookbinders still open in Richmond. It was my first stop after checking in to my hotel room. I walk in and saddle up to the bar with excitement to order my favorites. I notice the lobster tank is there along with the same elegant ambiance. The bartender was awesome, as expected. I order a moscow mule, which was perfectly mixed and I couldn't resist getting a second one when I was done with the first. Every meal at Bookbinders starts off with a tasty bread. It arrived warm with soft butter. I started my order off with the calamari. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned, with a dipping sauce that complimented it perfectly. My meal was off to a fantastic start! For my entrée I ordered the fried shrimp. The shrimp are the same large juicy delectable shrimp I remember them to be. The best shrimp I've had anywhere in the country. I dipped them into the cocktail sauce and devoured them quickly. The fries were nice and crispy and a perfect compliment. For dessert I ordered the NY cheesecake. The crust was slightly overcooked, but that didn't stop me from finishing that sweet ending to my meal with a smile on my face. No trip to Richmond would be complete without a meal at Old Original Bookbinders. It hasn't fallen off one bit over the years. They are still serving the choicest seafood cooked to perfection. Little overdue, my friend and I dined in on Thursday. We were in between a couple of different steakhouses but decided to go to Bookbinder's based off the aesthetic photos, and it did not disappoint. It's such a beautiful restaurant and has a lot of history behind it. Our server, Israel, was amazing. We had impeccable service from him, he was attentive, answered questions, gave us some insight about the restaurant and really took care of us, we felt like VIP's. This was a really really good experience! I don't know how I've never been before. I always knew it was a restaurant like the Boathouse but a little more upscale. Well, my boyfriend told me to pick a restaurant for a work dinner and Bookbinders had an opening, so why not? This was my opportunity! The restaurant is spacious and has an old steakhouse vibe with carpeted floors in one area and white tablecloths. It's cozy. Also the music is nice in the background they played Adele and Norah Jones. There are tons of couples around, seems like a popular anniversary or birthday spot. The service was great! They refilled my water frequently and were attentive to the tables' needs. About four people ran our meals out. The bread was soooo good and hot! For appetizers we ordered escargots, silver dollar mushrooms, and oyster Rockefeller. In my opinion, the oysters were the best option. I wasn't a huge a fan of the escargot. I did order a Caesar salad and it was top notch, very garlicky but I'm a garlic girl. For dinner I ordered the salmon stuffed with crab cake and bernaise sauce with a side of baked potato. My boyfriend got the filet Oscar style and creamed corn. He said the cream corn was his favorite. The other two guests had the petite filet. You have to order your side separately, so you'll probably have a lot of leftovers. For dessert I ordered the berry bread pudding which was OK, could've been a little softer and more flavorful I thought. My bf had the creme brûlée that he said was OK as well. The bill for four came out to $530, if it hadn't been a work dinner where the company paid we would've been a little more shocked. We both agree that if you're going to eat here, you have to realize you're going to drop some dough. In my opinion it's worth it. It's not really a place you go for a casual meal. Popped in last night for the first time in years and can't really find any fault with Bookbinder's, so it retains its 5 stars. We sat at the bar since we didn't have a reservation and they were slammed with what looked like a corporate Christmas party. All of the food came out in a timely manner. I got the shrimp bisque and rockfish; he got the fried shrimp. We shared creamed spinach and an entree-sized crab cake. Everything was well-portioned (enormous, took a lot of food home) and tasty. I generally prefer a "dry" rockfish, but this one had a sauce over it. While nothing blew me away, I have no complaints at all on flavor. Price point is a bit high, but probably on par with most fine steakhouses. Beautiful decor with a beautiful Christmas tree. Excellent service. The owner came and chatted and thanked us for coming. Hopes were extremely high upon entering this restaurant I'd heard so much about. Really couldn't ask for more as it related to the professionalism of our server and the quality of our food. His service was friendly but not overdone. Food from soup to entree to dessert was all on point. I will say I was disappointed by the not quite ready for business feeling at the front of house upon entry. A team of hosts were present but collectively they seemed confused and disorganized, lacking training, and short on manners. One of my main reason for celebrating my Birthday at Bookbinders was the special touch of receiving a personalized menu let me start here. Both my entrée and soup arrived at the same time I tasted the soup and knew it was not to my liking at little salty then I looked at my entrée and tasted it and thought what is this....When my waiter stop by I inquired about the entrée, he informed me that it was the vegan dish Zucchini Linguine. I politely informed him that this was not what I ordered, he apologize indicating he would place the order with the kitchen but return to say that the restaurant was out of linguine used to make this dish as the other dish was a substitution. He then ask if I wanted something else it would be on the house, I looked over the menu once again and ordered the pan-seared chicken breast. The cherry wine gravy/sauce with capers and artichoke was tasty but the chicken was tough. The best thing about my visit was my drink lavender-lemon drop mocktail delicious, I had two. Before I left I inquired about the personalized menus to my waiter he informed me that this was the first day back since the water crisis the city faced for a week and the restaurant was not fully back ok, thanks. On my way out at the hostess desk was another customer with her personalized menu,. I then inquired how I could get one. Not from the area, chose this restaurant because we were looking for a place to get together and enjoy a fancy meal. We ended up feeling like some things were a bit overpriced because of the restaurant's notoriety... but there was much to enjoy and be thankful for. Our server was polite and helpful, always looking out for us with great recommendations. -Hot fresh crusty bread for the table, delicious! -Seared tuna appetizer was packed with flavor and complementary textures. Loved the wasabi cream. -Half a dozen oysters... served with lemon, cocktail sauce, and some sort of citrus dressing option... but no horseradish or crackers :( Not worth asking for, they were very tasty, just surprisingly non traditional for us. -Steaks cooked perfectly and tasted even better; around the table were ribeyes and fillets, some accompanied by lobster or crab. -Tiniest asparagus ever, not to be a size queen, but...? -Lobster mac & cheese was to die for. Best ever. -Fried potatoes were very well cooked, but lacked flavor, served with plain ketchup. The shape was fun though! Probably very kid friendly! -Blackout Pudding Cake, made in house, was not as expected. There's nothing pudding about it. It's dense, more like a poundcake, and I've seen blacker chocolate cake, lol. They should revise this dessert option, give the people what they want - a knockout slice of moist, decadent chocolate cake. We never finished even half of it the next day, it's quite boring. A very dear friend was vising us for the first time in Richmond, and we specifically sought out a fine dining establishment for dinner. We read the reviews, and had high expectations for our dinner at Bookbinders. Unfortunately, our experience wasn't to be. We will start with the positives. First and foremost, our waitress Melody was fabulous. Professional, engaged, helpful, and clearly knew how to serve customers. The atmospher was quite nice, chaming, and reflective of Richmand of old. The other positives were they made an excellent mojito and the New England chowder was quite good. Now, onto the disappointments: -We wanted to order the two best bottles of French white wine as was listed on the wine menu. However, we were told they were out of stock for both due to supply issues from two different wineries. -My friend ordered the escargot appetizer, which we were told was a specialty. It arrived boiling hot, and she had to wait 10 minutes for it to cool off. The dish was tasteless, had no garlic and it was topped by mushrooms that were overcooked and detracted from the dish. This was not how to make escargot. -We returned the escargot. We then ordered the crab cake as a replacement. The cake was runny, having no binder, and it was bland and tasteless. On to the entree's -My friend ordered the scallops over a bed of rissoto. The four scallops were of generous portion and beautifully seared. However, they were completely oversalted, so much so that this ruined the dish. The owner was made aware of the issues we had had with our meal. He eventually made his way to our table. He couldn't have been less interested in what we had to say about the problems with the aforementioned dishes and spent maybe two minutes with us at the most. As he turned away to chat with the next table, he made a sound under his breahte that was a clear sign of his lack of interest. Again, I want to stress - our server Melody couldn't have been more engaged and helpful to us. She went to her manager, and had the final bill significantly reduced. My husband and I celebrated our sixth anniversary at Bookbinders and the staff went all out! We enjoyed every moment from our champagne toast to our customized menu and the food was absolutely delicious. The ambiance was very swanky! I enjoyed reading the US presidential history on the walls while waiting for our food and every thing was so good. Also, I have celiac's disease but there were numerous options for gluten-free persons such as myself. Highly recommended and I cannot wait to go back. But then later asked me if I wanted a snacky this word indicated a jesters of disrespect towards are age. Soon after we were forced to take crab cakes after denning them. This was very disappointing because I did not want the food. Later we were served with scallops which were amazing and very good service with the presentation of them. I was disappointed with the mushrooms apitizer they were very hard to grasp and were mediocre at best. And soon after are drinks took as long as a solar eclipse to show up. They never showed up so need to reorder after 8 minutes. The drinks later showed up after 18 minutes. In my opinion this is pathetic. After a slump of poor service I was later had a interaction with a kind man who gave us a head ups before dinner started. We were later seated but shortly interrupted by are waiter in the middle of are conversation this showed us disrespect. We were later served bread which was hard as a rock but the butter was a soft as a newborns skin. Later we realized a odd substance on the ceiling this made us feel very uncomfortable. Also the candles on the table were fake implying we can't handle real candles because of are age. They waiters forced us to pick a tenpitite for our steak this was very fusterating because I wanted personalization to my meal. Everyone was served sales but me this was very annoying because I was being treated differently. After are waiter was disrespectful he redeemed himself by providing us with free cherries. A kind fella by the name of Austin gave us many free things and was a overall blast. He was a very kind man and got us very exited by singing. We finally got are food after an hour and thirty minutes. Then they told us that 2 of the meals were not ready. Then it comes out and they can finally start eating and it blue and under cooked. It was like they sprayed the top brown and served it it was the most wet steak I ever seen. After and hour and fifty minutes there came out brown and burnt. At the end we were served chocolate cake. This cake was ok but had a lot of frosting. In conclusion this restaurant was not a hot and mediocre at best it disappointed us heavily and was not up to the expectations. Quickly becoming my favorite restaurant in Richmond! We had an anniversary dinner here and the staff could not have been nicer. Even the menu had "Happy Anniversary" printed at the top. Our server, Patrice, was extremely helpful and made great suggestions. She even gave us some complimentary glass of champagne to toast the event. Johnnie, the restaurant owner, also came by to congratulate us, and he took some pics of us on the patio. The evening couldn't have been better. I dined here for the first time tonight and had a great experience. The food was delicious and our server was amazing. I'm giving 2 stars because in less than an hour after finishing dinner, I'm dizzy, sweating, doubled over with stomach cramps and dinner quickly coming out the rear end. I made a reservation to have my husband's birthday dinner here. Easy enough to do online. We are in walking distance from Bookbinders so we were excited to try out this steakhouse in our neighborhood and celebrate my husband's special day. We arrived on a very rainy night and were promptly seated. You need to wear your mask when walking around the restaurant, going to the bathroom, etc, and waitstaff were all masked and there was plenty of social distancing between tables. On the menu, it said Happy Birthday on it but that was the extent of any recognition of my husband's birthday for the rest of the night. I asked our waiter if he could snap a quick photo of us together before our appetizer came out and he told me, can I wait a while because he wanted to go bus a table first. Ok..I kind of wanted to do it before I messed up my lipstick by eating, but I guess I'll refresh later when I'm ready. We ordered oysters on the half shell to start and I got my Hendrick's dirty martini which was made well. My husband had an Old Fashionedmade with Maker's Mark, which he said was fine. For my entree, I got the scallops with artichoke risotto and it was pretty delicious. Overall, we were really happy with the food, although the side of creamed corn we ordered wasn't traditional creamed corn. It was very cheesy and not very creamy. Next, was dessert and waiter convinced us to get their dark chocolate pate. He brought it out but I had to ask him if he could put a candle in it for us. I guess, I expected like what they do at every other restaurant of this caliber would do, which is to go a step beyond and actually acknowledge his birthday without me having to ask them when they knew about it beforehand. Often times, desert is comped but I didn't expect that, I'll gladly pay for desert but I expected them to bring it out with the lit candle. I had to ask after he brought out the cake, which by the way, didn't have texture of pate, but more like a ganache. It was ok, nothing specatular. But my husband did enjoy his port. So, the experience was meh, food was good, but I expected more in the service department, especially for the price point. We spent over $300 on dinner and drinks here. Very nice restaurant with professional and friendly staff. Our waiter Chris was very attentive and made sure we were taken care of. The fresh bread was really good. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. We both ordered the Oscar add on however we only received one, no big deal. We were a little disappointed with how small the asparagus were and the lack of hollandaise sauce. The lump crab meat was delicious and plenty of that. We also ordered the redskin mashed potatoes which were so good and the lobster mac n cheese which was yummy however we would've liked to see big pieces of lobster at that price. Lastly, we were a little disappointed with the dessert selection. We chose the NY chocolate blackout pudding cake which honestly was very bland, dry and just didn't taste fresh. It would've been nice to see a fresh baked lava cake or some type of fresh baked pie. We look forward to visiting Old Original Bookbinders again in the near future to sample some other delicious menu items. read more
