I went there for the first time last Friday. It was around 8:00 pm. The crowd had a good vibe, lots of friendly happy people outside listening to live music. The outside area looks amazing with the lights & wood beams. We were too late to get a table but managed to get drinks relatively fast from the three bars. The Goose Island Rep was a blast, I think his name was Matt but I could be wrong. He was challenging anyone to win him at Connect Four & it was fun to watch & play as well. And whether we won or loss we got a Goose Island souvenir. It added some spice to the atmosphere. I only drank Goose Island & Blue Moon beers so can't say anything about their food or mixers. Stumbled upon this place during a market trip and the reviews were plentiful and good. The place is open and clean. The decor looked fresh and inviting for a business lunch or a family get together. The menu is expansive and several options to fill fil your needs. They have specials each day of the week. Today we came on 1/2 price burgers with purchase of a drink. I ordered the 1/2 dinner salad and 1/2 bowl of chili. It was the first day of the seasonal chili and the flavor was good- a little bit of sweet but very meaty. My coworker ordered a side of sweet potato fries and they were covert good! Great seasoning here too. Everyone was satisfied with their meals. We are walking away satisfied. The waiter, Gavin, was very friendly and anticipated all of our needs before asking. If we weren't passing through, I could see this become on of our favorite spots. And they do a virtual waitlist. Only second time here. Wait staff are pleasant and it's generally a comfortable place. I know we're in a inflationary environment now, but their prices are outrageous compared to other similar restaurant/bars. I ordered something called Pasta Defacto. Was supposed to be pasta with salmon, mushrooms, spinach and fetta cheese. Sounded great. What I got was a giant bowl of macaroni look-a-like (the pasta was almost overflowing from the sides) with, maybe, a third of a cup of cubed salmon and a few pieces of mushroom and spinach buried in underneath. Had to search for the salmon. What a disappointment. For $25.00 I'd expect more than basically a bowl of pasta. Won't be going back. Oh, and their steak is only $45.00! read more

First time coming and we will be back! The Republic burger was delicious along with the sweet potato waffle fries. What really one is over was the friendly staff and how much our children loved it here. After the kids meal they get milk and a cookie, so cute. TL;DR: Overpriced, average, flavor-lacking. I'm honestly pretty disappointed by this place. From the outside, it looks like a really great place, nice outdoor patio, decent size building! The inside is pretty interesting too, New York themed! I had really high hopes for this place knocking it out of the park. I love live music, but I wouldn't choose this as my Friday/Saturday-night go-to venue. The one thing that bothers me the most is that I asked for a side of the mac & cheese with my NY Strip (yeah yeah, I know, that's not a side for a steak). The waitress told me that it would be a *SLIGHT* upcharge, which I anticipated and was fine with. When I hear *slight* upcharge, I'm thinking $3-MAYBE-$4 dollars, as I find that to be pretty standard. NOPE! $8 bucks for a side of cheese and noodles. Highway robbery. The steak, which is from Ream's in Elburn, was something else to be desired. I am beyond confused why restaurants refuse to season their beef. Even with salt & pepper! The demi & garlic butter at least added some flavor, but the steak itself lacked flavor. Ream's even makes their own seasoning (and it's delicious!). They most definitely price-gouge you on the price of the steak too. Their menu says "Market", but I would think that's typically reserved for actual steakhouses, not for a sit down burger/sandwich joint. The service wasn't spectacular or amazing, but it wasn't horrendous or terrible at all. It's honestly just nothing to write home about. It doesn't "wow" you. It doesn't leave you wanting more. It's not a place I'd say "let's go to" when we're looking for food on a Friday or Saturday night, or even recommend to someone who's looking for a new place to check out. Came in on a Friday night, which was apparently Movie Night. They were playing Ghostbusters. So that was a pleasant surprise! Neither of us had been there & found so many great options on the menu that we were overwhelmed! We ordered Saganaki as an appetizer. It was wonderful! Even though ours didn't light up very well. Our entrees were absolutely incredible. If I didn't want to try other things so badly, we'd get them again. My boyfriend ordered the Chicken Little fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was perfectly breaded, not too much but just enough crisp. My Elote Shrimp tacos were absolutely delicious. Just tried this place for the first time with my wife and son. The service was actually great but the food is nothing to brag about. My son's beer battered chicken fingers were soooo soft and like mush from the batter. The waiter suggested the burger which was the better choice that my wife got. I got the cheesy beef and must say it was a complete disappointment. No flavor and the bread was almost like it was steamed. Way to soft for a beef sandwich. The decor and vibe is very cool but the food is not. I would go for a few beers and a app but nothing more. read more

had dinner at the old republic last night (busy saturday night)! the outside was absolutely amazing! so lively with the band playing, and just an overall fun environment ! we sat inside and had a quick dinner! my dad got the fried wallbanger fish, and said it was great! i got the california chicken sandwich, and it was alright! nothing too special! my sister got the chicken fresca wrap, and it was much better than my sandwich (highly recommend this wrap if you go). we also got cheese curds to start which were fantastic (small appetizer portions though, i must say). our server was great and attentive though! read more

I've been coming to Old Republic at least once every two months for the past year or so, and I can definitely say I enjoy myself a lot when I go! I think the food is decent, and it is a great place to eat outside as well as watch the game/grab drinks with friends. Most often I get the wings or the burger, and I havent been disappointed! I think some of the menu items trend pricier than other places, but the quality of what you get at OR is definitely a step or two above any chain. It's classic bar food really, with a few spin offs depending on the season/what's available. I'd recommend getting some nachos for the table and then grabbing some sandwiches to really get a full experience! I think the best thing they have going for them is their outdoor seating area. It's spacious and heated when it's cold out. We've loved the live entertainment they've had from time to time as well. All in all, Old Republic is a regular haunt of mine that I'm sure I'll continue to frequent! read more

Not good for groups! Not anymore. OR was great last March and twice after that for our meetup group. Now that Illinois is open again and more people venturing out, OR did a 180 degree turn on their willingness to host our group. It was very negative. In the past I was personally introduced to Mom (who owns and runs this place) by one of our meetup group members. I also met the male owner (assuming husband) at our last event. I'm both venting and reaching out to management personally about the group's last visit here. Came here with my group 08/28/21 and treated very rudely by management because we arrived 3 hours early to save 3 tables. Management (Nick) admonished myself and another man who shared his feelings about that with me. My group member was pretty pissed off and Nick obviously came across very aggresively to this senior citizen man to provoke such a reaction. I was not there to see it, but this group member is a very calm quiet group member. We are adults over 45 and will bring our business elsewhere going forward. I spent over $50 on just myself last Saturday. I've brought lots of business to this place between my 2 groups, well over 100 different people since Spring. I'm not bringing anyone here again. My social meetup group has 982 members and my hiking group has 1,442 members. Not all active but word gets around as it does on social media. I got paranoid that we would get yelled at again for hogging seats whenever someone got up to talk to someone or use the bathroom. I did not want an empty seat to appear at our table even for a few minutes less we get admonished again. In the end all 3 tables up front had every seat filled. I also brought you about 20 others at another table on the other side celebrating a birthday. They took chairs 1 by 1 from other tables to form an ever growing circle around the table. Watch out for pricing here. Was there last night. Was charged $9.00 for one drink and the next one ordered when I a CC was used it was $7,50. Same vodka same exact drink. Same thing happened outside when I ordered beer. Was charged different price when I ordered same bottled beer. I was charged one time $5 and in addition, asked for $3 back and she gave me $2. When I met up with my friend she told me the same exact thing happened to her twice as well. Two stars given for the music venue/patio outside. Ladies.. 3 stalls for the women's bathroom. So bummed about this place because the atmosphere and food both look great. Was here Saturday night and went to the bar to have drinks while we waited for our table. The guy bartender was very busy and seemed to be on the opposite side. The female bartender was so rude, I was actually shocked. First we were ignored for a long time. We let it slide because it looked like she might have had friends or something sitting at the bar because she was hugging people, but then she kept ignoring us. I was able to finally get her attention and out of the 4 drinks we ordered, she got one right. The best part was instead of pouring my beer she went onto her friends again and closed them out. I was really looking for a certain taste and just didn't find it here. Our cheese curds were okay, nothing special, basic curds. We ordered a side of fries just to see if we even wanted to order them with our food and they just didn't do it for me. My husband ate them and we went to eat somewhere else instead. I was so very disappointed for the 2nd time I've ordered takeout from this restaurant, I would think for 28 dollars I could at least have a full slice of tomato and fresh onions on a burger not some wilted lettuce a end slice of tomato and yesterdays sliced onion and to add insult to injury last week baked potatoes that are being revised as potato skins because you added cheese and scallions. Well I have mixed emotions about this bar. I was welcomed on arrival the 1st bar wait staff was great and friendly. Except...she was leaving and just as my food was served she asked me to cash out. I don't like that at all, who wants to o handle money while eating and there is a lasting impression that you need to hurry and leave. I felt uncomfortable after that. The new waitress all but ignored me, my sense was because I already paid. I had to stalk them to get another drink and no conversation at all. It was mid day so not busy no excuse for them to ignore me. I ordered the burger because the 1st bar wait staff said it was there speciality. Cheese curds, cheesy beef egg rolls, smoked turkey club was the best. We tried this place for the first time last night. I made the above list so we remember what we had. Truly the house smoked turkey on the club was worth the trip alone. The egg rolls were excellent and cheese curds also. We saw some burgers and the walleye and would like to try those next time. Stopped in here after looking up restaurants in the area with patio seating. Old Republic did not disappoint. The atmosphere was totally unmatched but what REALLY made our experience here was our server, Jenni "with an i". With it being our first time, she made us excited to be there and made some phenomenal food and drink recommendations that and even gave us some ideas on what to come back and try next time. O R is a bit disappointing lately. It was great when it first opened. The outdoor venue is a great add and I'm sure helped them through covid. But the food? Quality is lacking. My wife and I were in last week. I ordered an entree that included Au Gratin Potatoes as a side. The plate was delivered with overcooked, cold potatoes. The Au Gratin slices were so hard and fused together with overcooked cheese, I could have used the pile like a frisbee. To add the fries are often cold and I have to ask for fresh ones. We love the burgers and fish tacos and always enjoy them with a tall draft. Make sure the sides are as fresh as the entrees. read more
