Was here many years ago. Wasn't as good as I remembered. I had the combination plate and wife had the chile relleno plate. Her plate was pretty good. Combo plate has a soft taco, relleno and enchiladas. All made with ground beef. I'm not a fan of ground beef. Server said absolutely no substitutions on beef. I'd of rather had shredded beef. Service was good. Store was clean and well kept. Probably will not return. read more

Good ambiance and good food, slow service but worth a trip to try it out. DO NOT order the chilie con queso appetizer! It is a spoon of green chilie in a yellow cheap cheese. They use the wrong kind of cheese which doesn't melt, it globs on your chip, and your chip breaks because of the weight and is way too stringy. The other dishes were good. read more

some of the best Southwest Mexican food available anywhere! this may be the only non-Native-ownedrestaurant on the Mescallero reservation. I love it that we can get along. If that weren't enough, the food is absolutely the best representative of southwestern Mexican food anywhere. The Chile's Rellenos had a nice crunch to them as the peppers were quite meaty. I was a little disappointed in their sauces this time. I hope that next time I can have a little spicier red & green enchilada sauces. Exceeding my Expecations !!! On my last trip to New Mexico, I went to the Mescalero Apache Reservation to visit old friends while on my way to Albequerque. After catching up and taking a drive up the mountains, we were starving. My local Food Crew suggested we head down to Old Restaurant, a local hot spot serving Mexican and New Mexican themed foods. Since I was just in Mississippi and Texas, dining on seafood and steaks, Mexican food was just what I needed. Old Road Restaurant has gone through some changes over the years, but seems to have hit its niche, and has been serving great Mexican fare for quite some time. The interior is very rusty and country style with wood trims and country themes throughout. There is an open downstairs area (maybe a banquet area or extra seating) clean and shiny with antiques and memories of a bygone era. Check it out on your next visit. Now to the food...The menu has many great classic choices like Tacos Enchiladas, Chili Rennello's, and many other items. Our brought out fresh homemade nachos with their in-house made Pico, mild and hot salsa, we also ordered some queso for those perfectly made chips. Our server was very friendly and gracious and patiently took our orders. My choice that afternoon was classic tacos with Beef, Chicken, Pork, all very well made and served with delicious homemade rice, beans, fresh sour cream, and shredded Mexican Cheddar. Wow, this meal hit the spot and surprisingly was not that heavy. All of us enjoyed our meals as we talked and got a chance to catch up. The food was very affordable and the Old Road Restaurant is great for solo eaters, couple groups and special occasions. If you are ever passing through the Mescalero area, you must stop in try this place, its one of the best places around to eat. read more

Out of the way, but worth the pleasant drive. The food was perfectly prepared. I had the Chile Relleno plate. My two chile's were incredibly tasty with perfect cheese, melted perfectly. Peppers cooked with just enough crunch to make them so good. I rarely eat the accompanying rice with my Mexican food. But after tasting this rice I ate it all! Delicious! Wife had Combination Plate. it was way more than she could eat. So I helped her finish. Her Relleno was as good as mine. The red sauce on her enchiladas was delicious - spicy enough, yet not overpowering. Her taco was cooked perfectly as a soft corn taco should be. The green salsa was pretty hot/spicey but had delicious garlic n onion with the peppers to add full flavor. I put it on just about everything. Our server was fantastic. She had a sweet smile and a pleasant demeanor and brought us our food as quickly as she could. She also cleaned up a mess for us. A glass was accidentally turned over. After the meal we spoke with the owner what a nice man! He is the son of the original owner. So this place is a family business that has been run well for many years. Please give it a try if you haven't already but don't tell everybody about it because it is not jampacked crowded as it could be. Just joking! We got to keep these good folks in business. read more

I guess I was hoping for something more. My wife ordered starched cheese enchiladas - no onions. They brought out stacked beef enchiladas - full of onions - TWICE! I finally gave her my rolled cheese enchilada (I had ordered the Combination Plate). We also ordered their guacamole, which was great, and the chili con quest, which was a glob of semi-melted cheese in the bottom of a bowl greasy green chili sauce... Not good! read more

ELA in Mescalero was closed so we found Old Road Restaurant on yelp and headed over. It was excellent. Good chips and salsa; yummy refried beans; my rellenos were delicious and so was the pecan pie!! If you are looking for quality Mexican food this is the place. If you want ambiance and a five star Michelin experience then look elsewhere. I had the old road combo plate and everything was absolutely outstanding. My wife had the Chile rellanos and loved hers as well. The chips appear to be home made and are delicious and the salsa (green) was so tasty we asked for a second one. Our waitress was very pleasant as well. The menu is fairly small but all the traditional fare is represented. Honestly I have no idea what more one could want. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area again. So yummy. read more

The chile here is good, this is a deciding factor of any New Mexican restaurant for me. This is worth the drive to its location off the beaten path. This restaurant has a steady stream of customers and at times gets packed (this is always a good sign). It has a beautiful view of the apple orchard. Really not sure why people like this restaurant. We went on a Sunday around 3. It was half full. They had 2 waiters and an older man working but the man basically just sat with guests and chatted. The two girls ran their butts off which meant no refills and slow service. Do not order their queso. It was soooo gross. It's filled with oil and though real cheese sounds good. It's not smooth but grainy and funky. Needs smoother Mexican melting cheeses. Just worst I've had. We had fajitas that were meh. I asked for them a bit charred and the onions and peppers were still fairly raw. Meat chewy. This is the second attempt here and neither made me want to go back. We own here and spend 2 - 3 months a year or so here and have been privy to dining in most restaurants. This just isn't what the hype represents. Oh, and what place gives you ONE tortilla for a whole order of fajitas? Then look at you as if you have three heads for asking for a second one? read more

This is the best Mexican food I've ever had. And cheap. Most entrees were in the $6.50-$10. Three of us absolutely stuffed ourselves with Mexican delights for like, $20. Excellent portion sizes. Incredibly tasty red sauce, rice, enchiladas, frijoles, even the free chips and tomatillo salsa is amazing. Everything is absolutely made from scratch... well, except for the soda ;). And yes, you can experience the difference in the finished product. Don't come here for its looks. There isn't even a SIGN on the front of the restaurant. I would definitely recommend stopping here if your in the area and looking for some good food. Chips and green salsa were brought out, the green salsa was great not too hot and not mild at all. I had a quesadilla to start with it was good start. The combo plate I ordered was way more food than I thought it would be a good thing. The staff was very friendly and helpful with my questions about ordering. My lunch was less than 20 dollars a great deal for great food. The place is the first 2 story building right off the road I passed it following my phone direction. On a side note cell service in the area was limited 3g I have Verizon. We love this place and have eaten there several times. The food tastes authentic and delicious. The staff are friendly and fast. We love to sit out on the little garden room extension. I love the enchiladas and having now gotten use to NM stacked enchiladas instead of Texas rolled enchiladas, I order them frequently. I love green chile sauce on them with an egg. Anytime we are in the Ruidoso area, we consider going over to Old Road Restaurant. It is not fancy, but it is GOOD and a fun place to stop over and eat. read more

AVOID. Came all the way from Austin, TX to visit this place with my mom who lives in Ruidoso. Don't try their quest. It's nothing more than their salsa with a tablespoon of cheese thrown in there. And I mean a tablespoon of cheese. It was so greasy that I think I'm over my cholesterol level after taking a dip of that. Everything I had was greasy and not healthy at all. After a year and a half of COVID lock down, my husband and I were given a recommendation from a local business owner outside Ruidoso, for his favorite Mexican/New Mexican local restaurant. He didn't hesitate and sent us to Old Road Restaurant. OMG!! This was the best coming out meal we could have had! Chili con queso, guacamole, home made chips, enchiladas, refried beans. All made to perfection, spiced with both green and red sauce. All very fresh and homemade. What sent me over the top was the spopapilla!
