"The Baddest Gym in the West"!
    Stephanie W.

I have nothing but spectacular things to say about this gym. I love coming here! The first thing to note is it is different from a regular commercial gym: it is a barbell club, meaning the movements are designed around the barbell, and this is primarily a training place for powerlifters and Olympic weightlifters who compete. It is an old school gym for the serious strength athlete, which also includes strongmen, body builders, and crossfitters. This is a USPA certified training and competition center as well and has held USPA competitions in the past. I believe one of the owners is a USPA director for California, but I could be wrong. Everything you want to train is available here, from combo racks for squats and bench press (ER Equipment), deadlift platforms and jacks, full and half power racks, and a monolift. There are eight total places to squat, nine places to bench, and six places to deadlift. There is a ton of equipment for accessories: reverse hyperextension GHD (glute-hamstring developer) glute drive vertical leg press bi-later and regular 45-degree leg presses hack squat power squat belt squat iso-lateral row iso-lateral pulldown iso-lateral high row iso-lateral shoulder press bi-lateral wide chess press multi-flex seated barbell shoulder press incline press rack free weight chin/dip machine supported T-bar two large cable-crossover machines with pulldown and row stations They also have all the isolation machines like, a prone and seated leg curls, standing and seated calf raises leg extension, hip adductor and abductor, sissy squat machine, French curl (triceps extension), standing and seated preacher curls, pec fly/rear deltoid, etc. There is too much to mention. And let's not forget the specialty bars and equipment: Ivanko competition discs, competition collars (power, squat, and deadlift bars: Rogue and Texas), wagon wheels, SSB bars, transformer bars, large Swiss bar, Kadillac bar, trap hex bars, axle bars, Slater log, cambered bench bars, chains, belts, knee wraps, fat grips, knee wrap roller, bumper plates, iron plates, chalk, tripods for phones, bands, kettlebells, belt buckle assister, etc. Lots of strongman equipment too like a yoke, tires, sledgehammers, sandbags, Atlas stones, a Husafell stone, the aforementioned axle bars and Slater log, etc. I am not a strongman, so I am probably omitting lots of stuff. You are free to use the parking area in back of the gym for this (parking lot is just for members and there is almost no traffic), as well a large field next to the gym in case you need a larger area. Finally, there dumbbells to 180 lb. (most gyms go to just 80 or 100 lb.), and some cardio, like Assault rowers, stair climber, ellipticals, and stationary bikes. Everything you could need is here. I can't list everything pr this review would go on for pages! :-) But the best thing about this place is the people here, both the owners and customers. No egos, friendly, polite, approachable, and dedicated to their sport. There is lots of encouragement and positive energy. I've had many a good conversation with people. One of the owners even comes each morning and does the cleaning himself. They take pride in this facility, and you can trust everyone. No stress. Many of the athletes here have also gone on to win titles in body building and powerlifting in various organizations. There is even a service dog of one of the members who is super kind and loves to be petted, which the owner let you do. The pricing is excellent too, both for monthly memberships and guest passes. Long-time trusted members can get a code which allows to train after hours, well into the early morning if they want. There is a credit card machine or a Venmo code in the front to pay, even when no staff is here. I come here every time I am in the Bay Area and purchase weekly passes. It is a little way from San Francisco, but it is worth the drive to me. They also have amenities like strong wifi, a unisex locker room, a medical scale, a microwave, a large refrigerator, water, paid drinks with pre-workouts and the like, couch, industrial fans (the isolation room in the middle is air conditioned I believe!), and shirts for sale. The restrooms are always well-stocked and clean. They occasionally have guest speakers/coaches. A Saturday this past summer, Ed Coan gave an all-day powerlifting seminar. You might have heard of him! (If not, he is universally known as the greatest powerlifter of all time). I didn't get to attend, but I should have. The owner said he would be back again though. You should give this gym a try if you're in the area. It's a throwback to hard-core training and a hidden gem of the Bay Area.

So this place is a diamond in the rough. The thing that impresses me the most is how well everything works. It doesn't look like they would work but they run better than some of the newer equipment in some of those high end facilities. 2nd thing that impresses me about this place is how they have a vast amount of different equipment to work with. In normal gyms you are limited with the amount of weight you can lift or what your able to do. Here they have so much you definitely will be able to keep growing or shrinking depending on your goals. 3rd thing is the prices. For what you pay in your normal gym you can probably get two or three months here. (not bad right) Now although this location is near alot of homes in Vacaville it is a drive for me. Specially since they will have Peabody close for a year. But going here to train is so worth it. Tyler is awesome and although I dont get to train as often as I wish the couple of times a week we do train leave me sore for days lol... I am slowly seeing the fruit of the hard work. Although at first you might feel intimidated by all the strong serious looking people you slowly realize they are all very friendly and helpful. Most of the time right after you see them the next thing you will get is a smile and a hello. (helps alot) Oh and some of the girls that work out here are amazing and so motivational. You see what they can do and your like wow!!!! watch out this girl means business. Anyways If you are trying to work out and dont have a lot of money but are serious about getting fit and stuff this place will have what you need.

27lb hammer, sled to push and sled to pull. Killer cardio @ Old Skool!

Best hard core iron gym around. They'll teach you if you are willing to listen, there is a true community here if you want to get serious about powerlifting and/or bodybuilding. There's no better place around. Don't go looking for Crossfit cults or Pilates parties. It's just you and the Iron here.

When I first moved to Vacaville I tried literally every gym available before coming to Old Skool Iron. What a mistake that was. I walked in to this gym and immediately signed up. 1) They have all the equipment you could possibly need. 2) Everyone that works there or works out there is extremely friendly and helpful. 3) and it's also one of the cheapest in the area. I have been to SO many gyms through California and Arizona and I have never enjoyed a gym or the members more. I couldn't recommend this gym more. 11/10

I can't remember ever having this much fun getting in shape before. And so much of it is about the community here: teachers, members and truly ALL the staff. I have taken many of the classes , which are all included in the basic membership plan (except the reformer classes). Boot Camp, TRX and Work it Circuit are my top favorites for strength training and the yoga classes are among the best I've ever taken (vinyasa flow, slow flow and restorative). They have a variety of classes for different levels of fitness and goals. The mat Pilates classes are excellent too and if I need a rest from weights I will often take one of these classes. I also started personal training with Jenn Fuji about a year and a half ago. I was having issues with my shoulder that wasn't fully recovering from an injury. She helped me rehabilitate and rebuild my strength back in that shoulder and I am now free of pain and have nearly 100% of my mobility restored. She is incredibly knowledgeable and encourages me to push just beyond my comfort zone and I have gained so much strength, stamina and self confidence. And we have fun too!!! Another aspect that I really appreciate is that they are always adding new classes to spice things up- sometimes they're pop ups for a limited time and sometimes they stay in rotation. But I love that things never stay static and boring. There is truly something for everyone, so give it a try! If not now, when?

I have been a member of Lady Fitness in Vacaville for about a year and a half. I have never used…read morethe Suisun location, but I'm writing a review here just to warn potential members about the bad customer service I received. READ your contract, and ask lots of questions. They will enforce it whether it makes good business sense or not, in order to keep their bottom line. I signed on to Lady Fitness in Vacaville based on the fact that I wanted a small gym located close to my house where I could be a true club member and not just another face. After viewing the class offerings and the facilities, I decided to check into membership. It seemed like a small, personable gym. I was convinced by one of the managers to sign on for a three year contract. I was skeptical to do this, but the lady who signed me up said that I should make a long term commitment to my health. I figured she was right, and plus, signing on for three years gave me a better rate. After having my baby, the location of the gym was even more important to me. I started taking classes and signed up for personal training with their "Gravity" machines. I loved the workout and I really liked my trainer. I was making tons of progress, working out four nights a week, and finally started to see results. I had finally figured out a schedule that worked for my family. I was really excited that I was back into the groove. Right about that time, I got a letter in the mail stating that Lady Fitness in Vacaville was closing. The reasoning for this is that they were going to merge teh Suisun and Vacaville locations, as they were having a difficult year. The letter stated that all membership fees were to remain in effect through the end of the contract. This was as per a clause in the membership contract that states (paraphrased) "if this facility should shut down for whatever reason, you'll be transferred to another Lady Fitness Facility 10 miles away and the contract will stay the same." WELL, they enforced that to the T, since the Suisun location is 8.5 miles away from the Vacaville location. They even went as far as to include a Mapquest image at the bottom of the letter to "prove" it. This was a very big deal to me, as my house is located the opposite direction. With traffic, gas, and the location of my house considered, there is NO way I could do that. Being only HALFWAY through my contract, I either had the choice to pay the rest of the contract (over $500) and move on to another gym, or I could waste tons of gas and precious time driving to Suisun four days a week. When I called the manager, and explained my situation, she basically told me that my situation wasn't special or any different than anyone else's. She said they would offer me a "deal" to get out of my contract by paying half of the remaining balance. For me, this was $260. OUCH. It would have spoken well of the company and it's owners to allow members out of their contract without a fee, or for a more reasonable fee! Especially those who had signed up for a long-term contract. However, there were NO other negotiations. My husband even tried calling and was told basically "sorry." At the end of the day, we ended up paying $260 and went to Gold's, whose facilities are much larger, and whose management is far more personable and accommodating. Not only that, but I got a lower rate than what I was paying at Lady Fitness! Just DO NOT sign a long-term contract, and just know that it will be enforced whether it makes sense or not.

The class was very very very challenging but rewarding, it makes me want to keep coming back so I can get better because I barely know the poses names. Review #100! Thrive…read moreNutrition & FITClub offers FREE Cardio Drumming and Strength Training classes Monday through Saturday. As of summer 2022, 1-hour weekday classes have been 6 pm, and Saturday classes are 8 AM Strength Training and 9:30 AM Cardio Drumming. Strength training classes are on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It is suggested you bring your own mat and hand weights, but there are some provided in class. This was my first experience with cardio drumming. Caroline is our beautiful, fit instructor. It's super fun and clever way to get in your steps and cardio effortlessly. Class is clearly popular and addictive with a loyal following. My favorite routines are the ones with salsa and arm movements. Cardio drumming classes are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Cardio drumming involves using drumsticks to pound on an exercise ball on top of a laundry tub set to the music. You might stretch, squat, lunge, or dance in front your ball/tub set-up at times. You might lower yourself to pound on the laundry tub. You might be pounding the exercise ball to the left or right your own ball. Some people run around the ball as they drum. Here's a video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTnjelSLoBA If you want to pick the perfect spot to exercise for cardio drumming, arrive 30-45 minutes early. Beginners should start in the 2nd row or further back and be centered to have people in front, behind, left, and right of them to copy. The instructor and experienced cardio drummers stand in a line in the front of the classroom. Regular class attendees can often tell you are new and will greet you and help you get set up. There is no formal sign-in sheet, I don't think. Thrive is located in Sierra Meadows Plaza, where BarnBurner, Jing Jing, Kathrin's Biergarten, Wally's, and Sushi Kakogan are located. It isn't hard to find a parking space, but if you're bringing your own equipment, you might want to find a closer spot. Arrive at least 10-20 minutes early if you want to place an order for the shake service or mega tea. Shake service consists of 3 drinks: a pre-workout aloe shot, an energy & metabolism tea during workout, and a post-workout high protein, low calorie shake. Most shakes are 200-250 calories and 24 g protein! You can also place your order ahead of time: Call 916-259-1964 or text 916-835-2228. As of summer 2022, shake service costs $11.50. You can order a 2-drink service of the aloe shot and tea for $3.50. The energy and protein powders are Herbalife brand. Rhonda Hansen and Char Avila are co-owners with the Tsutakawas and skillfully handle the food and drink orders. Rhonda impressively memorizes your name over time as she takes your orders without any formal introduction! Aloe shots come in 3 flavors: Mango, Cranberry, and Mandarin. Mango is my favorite. The energy and metabolism teas come in these flavors: Original, Lemon, Peach, Raspberry, Pomegranate, Green, Chai, Cinnamon, and NRG. Raspberry is the customer favorite. Shakes comes in over 80 flavors!!! These are some customer favorites: #15 Butter Pecan #34 Coffee Toffee Crunch #39 Cinnamon Toast Crunch #19 Chocolicious #67 Chocolate Butter Pecan #23 Reese's Peanut Butter Cup I enjoyed #26 Cherry Garcia, my very first shake, and a sample of #50 Banana Split. Craig's favorite shakes include: #12 White Chocolate Caramel #39 Cinnamon Toast Crunch #48 Banana Nut Muffin #80 Lemon Pound Cake (+$1 for juice) #53 Raspberry Lemonade (+$1) There are seasonal and holiday flavors. Ask for the Secret Menu, or look for a specials menu. From Facebook, I gathered this information on special menu items: #80 Lemon Pound Cake #81 Candy Cane (winter) Pumpkin shake flavors are available in the fall, starting in September: #74 Pumpkin Cheesecake #77 Pumpkin Latte #85 Pumpkin Pie #86 Pumpkin Toffee Cheesecake #95 Pumpkin Toffee Popular Mega Tea flavors include Pink Lady, Watermelon Jolly Rancher, Summer Breeze, and Beauty and The Beast. Pink Lady and Summer Breeze are Caroline's favorite mega teas. On Sundays, you can order a Waffle Bowl Sundae, a breakfast shake made with 1/2 of a hot protein waffle. 31 grams of protein and 350 calories. Thrive also sells protein cookies in a variety of flavors. They also sell protein donuts on Tuesdays. Group photos or videos are taken every class. Most people are unmasked in this indoor class. Hand sanitizer, masks, and disinfectant spray and wipes are by the cash register. I'd recommend taking a fun trip to Guitar Center in Roseville to choose and purchase your own drumsticks from a huge selection. I got Size 5A drumsticks. 5B is thicker. Timbale sticks are similar to Cardiostix. However, Thrive has plenty of equipment if you don't buy want to buy your own. The free cardio drumming classes got me start exercising again after a torn calf muscle, so thank you very much to Caroline and Craig Tsutakawa for getting me into Thrive.
