So I haven't been there in a really long time and it was after hours and it was open. I ordered a grilled cheese and fries and a burrito. I waited about 45 minutes to get my food. Everybody else was finished and when I went back there they still wasn't done andthey did just void out my receipt, but the food wasn't all that tasty so I don't think it's a place that I need to go back again. I got 4 beers and fries. Tipped 25% and waited over an hour and a half for my fries. Never got them and ended up leaving. I reminded them after 45 minutes and they said they were backed up. I never saw anyone else with food. I would recommend going to any other bar. read more

We came here for St. Patrick's day and it was the spot to be. They were participating in (at least) one of the bar crawls and they had a special menu for people participating as well as a St. Patrick's day menu for regular people like us. The prices were all reasonable, $2 Jell-O shots and $5 puts of Guinness as well as some other options. We learned at one of our other stops that Old Tavern had opened at 6am with drinks and breakfast burritos available. It was less crowded at that time too. They have a bar inside and outside and a good amount of seating. There's also a pool table and pinball machines here too. I recommend bringing cash, they take cards but charge you a standard charge and then give back change in cash. It was weird to me, but I understand credit card fees suck for businesses especially when people are getting low priced drinks. This wasn't our first time at this dive bar and it won't be our last. read more

Good 'ol OT. This place is definitely a dive and the crowd seems to vary. Some weekends it a younger crowd which means the Touchtunes is cranking out hip hop and others it's an older crowd so it's playing country and rock, ya just never know! They offer a pool table, which is hard to get and good luck playing on a busy night because you'll rarely get a shot in where someone isn't bumping into you. They have a few seating tables inside as well as outdoor seating with an outdoor bar. If the inside is packed, I recommend trying the outside bar as it's often times way less crowded. And that's assuming they have it open and manned. They also have a few arcade games which I feel have been neglected. I don't think I've ever seen anyone play them and honestly wouldn't be surprised if they didn't work. As previously mentioned, getting a drink from the inside bar can be tough. They have a huge "order here" sign at one end of the bar that no one seems to acknowledge as it's just a free for all. Lastly, the bathrooms. They only have one stall for the women and it's a tiny area so it gets crowded waiting in line that often times women have to wait outside the entry door. They do offer food too, well wings, just wings. It's from a separate company that uses their kitchen so not technically Old Taverns food, but worth the mention that they are good if you find yourself hungry. I do love that OT is located within walking distance to Zebra and Henry's so it's almost always in rotation when we visit one of the other bars. read more

It's a neighborhood place but you don't feel like an outsider, all the staff are pretty friendly no matter who you are. There were an awful lot of women in Daisy Duke shorts halfway up their butts and tattoos, some classy folks too. I love how racially mixed and harmonious it was. Everybody's family there. Giving the kitchen another chance, the sandwiches all seem to be pressed flat and dripping with grease, they need to retire their panini press and make straightforward fresh fluffy roll sandwiches. read more

This is for Papi Hibachi the Chef in the back. Went in today with a group and ordered the loaded cheese fries, bacon wrapped hot dog, and fried mozzarella sticks and poppers. Everything was hot, crispy, tasty, and a big portion. Papi himself came by to check on us, gave us free fresh churros as a thank you, and was super friendly! It's a little loud inside and if you have trouble sitting at a high top you may want to look for another restaurant. In the summer they have outdoor dining. I am 73 years old now. The last time I was here is when I was 29 years old and it looks nicer than I use to drink beer here back in 1979. Bill was the owner and he also owned another bar in Sacramento. He sold that bar and kept the Old Tavern. I don't believe at that time, they ever served food. Mostly beer and wine and was super inexpensive from what it costs for a beer or a glass of wine today. The bouncer is a weirdo. He tries to get at every girl that walks in. Even left the front door unattended and followed a girl to the bar line to shoot his shot, then went back to the front door. And this one time when I was having a conversation with one of my friends outside in the back, he yells out "I know you are cupcaking but the back is closing." It makes me sad how far this place has fallen. It used to be a fun, chill dive and more importantly a place I felt safe. Not so anymore. At first I was excited about the new video games in the back, which y'all know is one of my great loves. Then I started to notice over time that most of the things that made OT great were starting to slowly fade away. The remodel was kind of cool but most of the character this place had was washed away when that happened. Carly left, too. She was the best part of OT. It feels less like a silly dive full of quirky characters now due to a noticeable change in the average crowd. I don't know where this came from. I am just not comfortable with the people that hang out here anymore, which sucks because it's my neighborhood. Patrons are rude and cut in front of short, stout folks that just want a damn pint (me). People are grabby, ready to brawl, noisy bro types. The exception is the morning weekend crowd and people who were here on the morning of St. Patrick's Day year of our lord 2018. I'm trying to be fair, I really am, but I don't want to be at a place with an unwelcome vibe. Then, the straw that broke the camel's back happened. How's that for an overused phrase? I have limited patience for being ignored at the bar. It is known. The last time I was here it was slammed, I'll say that, but I was literally brought to tears because the bartenders were ignoring me time after time and taking cutters that shoved me out of the way instead, or in one instance someone that was clearly a regular. Eye contact was made with me more than once and I was completely ignored by the bartenders who clearly saw what was happening. It infuriated me and made me upset. A kind barback was the only apologetic face I saw. I finally did get a drink after a few rounds my tall, strapping bf was able to secure for me (we were here with friends so I felt I had to stay and be polite blah), so I would go so far as to say at least one male bartender that worked here within the last 5 months gave a crap. He and the female barback are why I don't dole out a 1 Star. Goodbye OT and your delicious wangs. I'll be at Zelda's if you need me, or at other establishments that treat me like a human being (Elixir, Hideaway, etc.). Try to care about women's safety a smidge more and don't ignore paying customers at the bar for patrons you know that shove their way in front. Low class. read more

Great local bar for a Bloody Mary. Caddy makes the best bloody Mary's and drinks are fairly priced. The bartenders are great and the crowd are usually regulars of the bar. It's a nice place to grab a drink to start the night or before brunch since they are open fairly early. read more

It's a classic place in Sacramento that many people go to from all walks of life. There are many regulars and many rotating faces as well. During the week it's mostly dead but can pop off randomly. It's one of the diviest dive bars there is, they don't have simple syrup or any sugar for drinks. Or at least they say they don't. The new kitchen they have the spectacular, hibachi papi is great at what he does with rotating menu and something new every week, hell everyday! Weekends it can get super busy, and you can end up waiting in line for a drink for more than half an hour. It can get pretty crazy in the parking lot, with many party goers frolicking outside. All in all great vibe, from people and staff, cheap drinks, pool table and fun nights. read more

But I went for the first time since covid and its nothing like how it was, the crowd was angry and filled with a bunch of kids who didn't look like they're even old enough to be in there and the staff was super rude espacially the really tall bouncer they had at the door who was selling what i can only assume to be cocaine at the door while me and my friends were trying to get back in. I really like this dive bar, always have.. Especially after the remodel. It's much more open and modern now, While still maintaining a lot of the awesome historical points of the building. They have maintained their inexpensive prices but added a modern and younger flair, and having a very mixed crowd here is also a Plus. They have an arcade room, full bar, pool table and they have expanded the backyard area to have more tables and chairs and a cabana all the way in the back. The overcharging, piss smelling bar. Was visiting a friend in Sacramento this past weekend. Found this place on yelp, decent reviews. Walked in around 9pm on a Friday night. The place looked nice but as soon as you walk in the smell of piss just hits your face so hard. The crowd was shady and we wanted to leave almost immediately but we decided that we were there already, might as well get a drink before we leave. This is where things really get interesting. Ordered about 4 shots and 4 mixed drinks , present the bartender with my card to pay for the drinks and this is exactly what the bartender said to me - " We only charge for drinks in denominations of 20$ , so the drinks are going to be 40$ but I am going to charge you 60$ on your card and give you 20$ cashback so you can tip me the money. " WHAT THE WHAT!! I have been to many many bars and have never heard anyone come up with a bright idea that this guy came up with. When I asked him if I was supposed to give him all of the 20$ cashback as a tip.. his response was "You dont have to tip me all of it".. Well thank you Mr. Bartender for being so generous. Has a very wide variety of people who attend here, which made it rather enjoyable for me as a people watcher. Its not a 5 star resort or lounge. This is a bar. And it does a good job of it. Not overpriced. Also had 24 beers on tap. Always a plus. And they also do a good job with mixed drinks. I do give honest ratings and while I give it a 3 in cleanliness, again...this is a bar. SITREP There was a Yelp-UYE hosted event earlier back in March. Hadn't been here in almost 5 years. I kinda remember why now. Pretty non-descript DIVE. Nothing spectacular stands out. It is an interesting, divy bar with a history that goes back 15 years for me. I have to admit that I was never a really big fan of this place, but there was some delicious rockabilly gals I loved to hang out with that liked this joint back in the early 2000's. But circles of friends change, and I no longer live in the downtown grid. So there has to be something extra special about a place that will drag me off the beaten path. A special group of friends. A radical DJ-dance event. A UYE. And there you have it. THE LOWDOWN If this was in my hood, I definitely would stop by now and then: after all, there is something to be said about low-cost, local and convenient. This is home away from home. My favorite bar - maybe even my favorite place to be - outside of my own home. The bartenders are quick, skilled, creative, and cool. If Brandon is working, ask him to make you a "fucking delicious". You won't regret it. The bouncers don't take bullshit, but if you have a good attitude and aren't causing trouble, they're fun to chat with out front. The juke box rocks, literally. Plenty of seating, great porch. Could use a little repair here and there, but they've come a long way just since I've become a bar fly a few years ago. The ladies restroom is WAY better than it used to be. Their kitchen is super cheap, almost always open, and delicious. I usually get the grilled cheese with garlic fries, but everything else I've had is good too. They BBQ here a lot on Sundays, and make holiday themed meals from time to time, like corned beef, cabbage, and vegetables for Saint Patrick's Day. If you're all dolled up and looking for a night out on the town, dancing and ambiance and all that, this is not your place. This is a dive. We look "scary", we listen to the Misfits and Slayer really loud, and we don't kiss your ass.
