A group of 5 of us came to Mattone Ristorante for lunch today to celebrate a coworker's birthday. It was my first time at Mattone, but I remember visiting this location years ago when it was Espanol with my family for different occasions. Mattone Ristorante is located in East Sacramento, across from Corti Brothers and Chipotle. The inside was modern, clean and upscale looking although I did miss the more homey authentic feel of Espanol. I ordered the Caesar Salad and Lasagna - I ate every last bite of both dishes. The 12 layer lasagna was delicate and light while the Caesar Salad was refreshing and not overly dressed. My coworker got the beet salad and she said it was the best salad she ever had. The bread basket was so good too - seasoned house made breadsticks and foccacia bread slices with whipped butter - chef's kiss! Service was great and our water glasses were never empty! While we passed on dessert, I was very intrigued by the Cappuccino Cheesecake - I will definitely be back for that! I'll be back during dinner time to try more dishes - maybe for a date night with my husband! read more

The atmosphere leans a little dressier, but we've gone both dressed up for date nights and casually. The menu evolves, which keeps us coming back, but the staples are consistently fantastic. Came here for our 15 year anniversary :) Customer service: Felt welcomed, seated quickly ( we did have a res ). Intimate but spacious, everyone greeted us politely. Waiter Sara (I think that was where name) she was very nice and felt no rush from her at all. Very attentive as well. Will def come back because of the nice service. Food: It was soo good. Not atonement but did have likable options. I had the ravioli of the day ( mine was stuffed with crab and shrimp with a white sauce 10/10 recommend. My husband got the 12 layer ravioli which was also very good 10/10. For appetizers we got the bread basket $5, beef tips $24, and fried calamari $18 all of it was good. There is an article with a write up in the entry way of the restaurant that says delizioso. I would describe it as absolutely fantastic and one of the best meals I've had in months. If I could rate it over 5 stars I would. Excellent service with top notch food equals a great dining experience. For the longest time we've driven past here and kept saying we needed to try it. We made a reservation and went on a Friday night. The place was busy but we were seated fairly quickly. The vibe inside is definitely date night or friends get together. They have a decent variety of options on the menu, we got the bread basket which was super tasty. Because it was a Friday night service was a bit slow and it was super loud, so keep that in mind. Here's what we got: Pork belly appetizer 7/10 I prefer mine crispy Lasagna 10/10. I typically don't like lasagna but this was some of the best I've ever had. Shrimp bruschetta 7.5/10 it was worth it and only $12 Mushroom pasta (mafaldine) 5/10. I ordered this and it my least favorite by far. Had a weird bitter taste. Ragu 9/10 this was delicious and had pork shoulder meat I believe. All of the pasta was home made! With the service and fine dining atmosphere, Ragu, and lasagna, this place deserves a 5 star rating even though I didn't care for my mushroom pasta entree. Came here to celebrate my sister's birthday. The parking situation is a little tricky but was able to find a spot not too far away. It's a cozy little Italian spot and you can tell it's authentic. The food..... was authentic and tasted like the best Italian food I've had in Sacramento. We tried the pork belly prosciutto because I was curious and never had it before. I was amazed how tasty and how each flavor complemented each other. I ordered the pappardelle, let me say "the best" and the pasta was cooked perfectly, very rich in flavor, creamy, and so delicious. You'll just have to try it! We also tried the lasagna, packed with so much flavors and never had lasagna tasted that good. The restaurant had plenty of seating, I was there for dinner so it was low dimmed romantic lighting. Great choice of wines an available for dinner, we ordered two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc. We were craving Italian food and came across this place. We started with the Capesante con Piselli, which came with pan-seared scallops, acorn squash purée, crispy parsnip, and salmoriglio sauce. It was incredibly delicious; the scallops were cooked perfectly, juicy, and full of flavor. For the entrée, we ordered the Lasagne al Ragù di Carne, made with 12 layers of spinach pasta, meat tomato ragù, béchamel, and Parmesan cheese. It's my first time seeing green lasagne, which was really interesting. Their ragu sauce was spot on, rich and well-balanced. We also tried the Gnocchi of the Day, which was a bit letdown for me. The gnocchi had a firm, almost hard center. I was expecting it to be soft, pillowy, tender, and have an almost melt-in-your-mouth. The sauce was a bit watery, and overall, the flavor profile felt bland. For the desserts, I had the tiramisu, made with mascarpone, ladyfingers, espresso, and cocoa powder. It tasted good, but I personally prefer a stronger and bolder espresso flavor. The service was great and very attentive throughout our meal. read more

Found our new favorite Italian spot in Sacramento! Food was top-notch with scrumptious house-made pasta. The lasagna was 12 layers of pure perfection that melts in your mouth. Usually not a lasagna fan as it feels too heavy, but this one was just right. The steak bites appetizer was perfectly cooked and had great natural flavor balanced with sauces. The salads were... salads. The service was friendly and attentive. The only thing slightly missing was that the ambiance didn't match the quality of the food and service, with artificial flowers on the tables, mildly uncomfortable booths and just a boxed-in feeling. I've decided this restaurant no matter how many folks are with you, time of day etc. they take longer to serve. Could be because everything is made in house including pasta which I appreciate but just know when coming you are in for a minimum 2 hour serve whether at lunch or dinner. I can see why the Lasagne is popular, it was DELICIOUS, probably one of the best Lasagne I have tried & it tasted real authentic, hard to find at Italian restaurants these days. The Steak was also amazing as well too my bf enjoyed it very much, said it was better than a lot of Steakhouses in Sac. We were so full at this point but still decided try the desserts! I was a big fan of both the texture of the scallop as well as the flavor of the butternut squash sauce. Came here with my wife after visiting the fab 40s Christmas lights. The hostess was really nice, but it took us a while to get seated because she got a phone call the same time and the person on the other end seemed difficult. I got the scallops and lasagna. Both very solid dishes. I'm not really a lasagna connoisseur, but it was rich and hearty. Came here for a girls night old, and Mattone did not disappoint! It's a very interesting layout, a step to the right is their restaurant and a step to their left takes you to the bar. We were on the restaurant side, dim lights and very cozy. They have amazing pasta selections and their drinks are to die for. We had their calamari which was super crispy and flavorful, beef carpaccio, which is extremely delicious. Their soup is the day was the tomato bisque and I could've probably had 10 bowls! For the main course I ordered the Pappardelle con Gamberi, so much shrimp loaded on top of freshly made pasta that was so delectable. My friend had the gnocchi which was also so so good!!! I could rave about the food forever it was so great! The service was amazing! She was so accommodating and even put a candle on the dessert for our girlfriend's birthday. The carpaccio was a little weird because they put some kind of mayonnaise-like dressing on it, instead of just letting the meat stand on its own with maybe a little EVOO and lemon. The Caesar salad was tiny, overpriced, and unremarkable (had to ask and pay for anchovies, and they didn't have the white ones). We arrived to what looked like an underwater venue, once inside it a classic Italian restaurant, dimly lit with soft music. A great place enjoy a memorable dinner, The interior has a warm, neighborhood ambiance. The lighting is soft and inviting. Staff was attentive and friendly. We started with the bread basket and calamari. The basket had light, crispy breadsticks, which were a hit at our table. For drinks, I had a bottled Peroni beer. For our entrées, we picked the lasagna and the cod dinners. Both dishes were excellent. The Lasagne al Ragù di Carne had perfectly baked spinach pasta, meat tomato ragù, béchamel & parmesan cheese. This was our first visit to Mattonne, and it will not be our last. We came for the lasagna and are now eager to work our way through the rest of the menu. The cocktails (Manhattan and huckleberry lemon drop) were great. The Crostini with Proscuitto, Mozzarella and port-poached pear was delicious. The Lasagna was excellent - it definitely reminded me of Biba's, where a lot of the staff previously worked. The Caesar salad was OK. The Garganelli with Mushrooms and Black Truffles was devine. The Zuccotto Fiorentina dessert was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Don't let the plain exterior fool you. The inside is elegant and relaxed. My family brought me here for a birthday dinner this evening. 6 of us in our party and the hostess was very welcoming. We ordered calamari, and the bread baskets. Calamari was lightly breaded, tender and delicious. The bread baskets consisted of freshly baked focaccia and house made breadsticks that had a wonderful seasoning. We came on a Tuesday for a birthday dinner! We've been here once before and recommended it to a family member to try since they were craving Italian for their birthday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, they have a fixed dine - in 3 course meal for $39. You get the choice between a soup or salad, an entree, and a dessert. I got the veal cutlets with mash potatoes and spinach. The veal was super tender and the sauce on it was delicious. It paired well with the velvety mash potatoes and fresh spinach. Friday night date night... We all enjoy being wined and dined, and what better way to do that than at Mattone Ristorante! With reservations made, we arrived at tad bit early, and waited for our table. We were given the choice of sitting in the main dining room, or in what they referred to as their backroom, which is the area used for private parties. I'm so glad that we opted for the back room. It definitely was away from the loud main room, and created the perfect setting for a lovely dinner, and wonderful conversation. We started our meal with aranchi. I've had better. It was good, but not fabulous. The sauce was very spicy and bitter. The lasagna was definitely the hit of the meal, and I would highly recommend ordering it if this is your first time. 10 layers of perfectly cooked spinach lasagna noodles with each layer filled with meat sauce, béchamel, and so much goodness. Each bite was better than the last. When it was served, they added fresh Parm grated at the table on top that melted into the tasty lasagna. We concluded our meal with the house specialty dessert. The zuccoto. Its layers of hazelnuts, cake, tasty filling, robbed in a layer of chocolate, with this lovely sauce at the bottom. The dessert is very filling, very rich, and absolutely shareable. Service was a bit spotty, but staff was friendly, as were the other diners. It's definitely a date worthy restaurant, and there's lovely music playing in the background. The perfectly placed table linens are a nice touch, the flatware could use some updating. They have their own adjoining parking lot with complementary parking.
