I wanted to catch up with a good friend of mine over some potent drinks (some of the best conversations happen over strong beverages), so I suggested The Flame Club (commonly known as "The Flame"). A majority of my early to mid-twenties was spent hanging out at The Flame on Saturday nights meeting new people (probably embarrassing myself) and throwing back an infinite amount of drinks. Back then (2008-2011), I had built a relationship with the bartender at the time (who has since left) and was living the bachelor life. Fortunately, things changed for the best in my life and The Flame became somewhat of a distant memory. Fast Forward to 2018, I was a bit weary that The Flame would not be what it used to be, boy was I wrong! With the exception of the new bartender (Brian), The Flame is the exact same as it was ten years ago (the place even smells the same)! When we walked in we were greeted by the bartender, Brian. Even though it was somewhat busy, he made it a priority to take our orders ASAP. I ordered a Raspberry Lemonade concoction (Deep Eddy's Lemonade Vodka, 2 Parts Raspberry lemonade, and club soda) and my friend ordered a Jameson and Coke. I knew it was trouble when I saw the liquor to "everything else" ratio! However, since The Flame is "cash-only", we both were on a $20 "budget" that would prevent us from getting so toasted that we would need the paramedics to cart us out. In between more stiff drinks we enjoyed socializing with the wide-array of patrons enjoying themselves in similar fashions. From past and current experiences, The Flame has always attracted a diverse group of individuals. You get a little bit of the millennial Midtown hipsters mixed in with folks who have probably been coming to The Flame since I was driving a used Toyota Tercel back in high school. Remarkably, I have never witnessed any verbal or physical disputes in my experiences at The Flame. As predicted my friend and I were fortunate to have a designated driver/friend pick us up (we left our car's in The Flame's parking lot). The next day we returned to retrieve our vehicles, which were both unharmed (thankfully)! My friend loved The Flame and I fell back in love with The Flame. Don't be intimidated by the shabby appearance of the building, this place is a sleeper! No it doesn't have a built-in five star restaurant, nor do they serve drinks in a fancy glass with an umbrella attached. However, if you're able to look past aesthetics and accept it for being a Dive Bar, you're in for a treat! Great dive bar, they have a TV and music I think. Its fairly dark, which can be a good thing. The shots are at least doubles.. the atmosphere is a bit cramped.. Quiet and an older crowd. Mellow and low key but we rarely go because its cash only, which is a real bummer. Get with the times already. Lol. It's on the outskirts of midtown (like most of the dive bars in the downtown area).. I think a shot of Jamieson whiskey was $6, but it was massive.. If you hit the cigar club or Jensai sushi across the way, its a great place to pop in for a cocktail. They do have an atm, but bring cash to avoid atm fees. And don't bring a large group.. Where to start, if you like hood bars this is five star for you! The drinks are strong and the shots are truly doubles. If your ok with a lil ratchet turn up then this my friends is a hidden gem. This is the place you pop in for a pre-drink or a nightcap. Flame is a workhouse of a bar; cheap, strong, and get the job done. I like to stop in between errands for a cheap beer, and recently had breakfast. Dive bar pozole! It was legit. A breakfast burrito is also offered Sat and Sun. That pozole though wasn't full of fatty meat, had a good broth, and came with the fixings of cabbage, radish, onions, and lemon. This Mexican approves. No windows? No problem. Honestly a cool place to hang out. Plenty of parking, the bar is pretty small however. The back door is a cool area to smoke, close to the bathroom and close to the bar, i wish they put a small fence so i can bring my drink out there. Drinks are cheap and usually small crowds so it doesn't take long to get drinks, the bartenders are friendly. Now the reason why it's getting 3 stars, the past couple of times i have come here there seems to be somewhat homeless people who hang out in or around the bar. I used to live down the street from this place as a kid. I always thought it looked super sketch and never a place I wanted to ever step foot into. I went in on a whim with some coworkers and I have to say - It ain't half bad! I imagine the night crowd probably is kinda sketch though... I have been in on an afternoon for the lunch special. We got lit at the Flame Club. Lots of Dive Bar regulars showed up for this classic Sacramento dive bar with the neon sign. Even a few Yelpers made an appearance. There are no windows. So before you enter The Flame Club you never know what you're gonna get. Could be two regulars slumped over the bar or twenty patrons enjoying the jukebox, shufflboard, or PLAYBOY pinball. I ordered a Stella and then switched to Coors. It's the Banquet beer. Seemed more appropriate to drink Coors at The Flame Club. Later on in the evening the Tamale Guy showed up in the parking lot. When people say, "no frills," they are totally not kidding. Upon walking in, I wasn't certain whether I was opening the back door, side door, or front door. I didn't have a problem with the sketchiness, the lack of windows, or the decor... no, no, I can definitely appreciate a dive bar. What I can't stand is a mean, bitter bartender, I don't care how much alcohol you pour into my glass. Plus, the shuffleboard wasn't well salted and it was warped. If you don't own a place to live, then sure, come here for some cheap drinks. So many epic nights here and so many exceptional keeps have graced the bar. It's obviously lit af, because well duh, it's the Flame Club. I was just checking to see if this spot is still open since I've been outta Sac for a bit, and found myself perusing multiple reviews bitching about draught beer selections and bartenders being unfriendly to obviously uptight, squares. I gather this is a consequence of the gentrification I hear going on all over midtown. Bummer, but glad this spot is still weeding out the idiots I wouldn't want to encounter when enjoying a strong whiskey ginger and bullshitting with the homies. Flame Club always kept it real during my time in Sac and I now see they continue to. Just a simple laid-back bar to get the night started. The very few times I've been in there it was not so crowded I had a fight for a chair at the bar. The patrons are usually very easy-going and easy to start up conversations. Now in my first visit... I mentioned to the bar tender to take notice at my size. "I'm kinda a big guy, better make mine a double or even triple". The bartender and the other patrons laughed. It was evident have never been there before. The bartender suggested that I start off with a regular and then if I'm unsatisfied to ask for shot. The regular house whiskey and Coke was superstrong. Definitely not for the low tolerance community. This definitely was a big boys drink. My cousin, my wife, and I walked out of there feeling great ready to tackle the night. Nevermind the creeps and jerks who hang out here... the place is amazing. The room is small, it's a complete dump, but it's one of the greatest bars in town. The bartender (Jane) knows your drinks, she makes them stiff, and they're dirt cheap. Plus, there's free shuffleboard! Also, the regulars know about the "secret" menu. Tacos, $1 each, but you have to ask for them. If you plan on spending a night on the town, be sure to stop at the Flame Club first to get wasted for little to nothing, and you might be surprised who you run in to. read more

This is the perfect place for people are very heavy drinkers that want cheaply priced super stiff drinks 24/7. You'll see people in there gulping strong drinks from the very early am to 2am every day. In a city full of bars that remind me of why I left Sacramento to begin with it is refreshing to find one that is essentially what you might find if a few well behaved hipsters wandered into the Tenderloin for an evening of drinking in SF. The lighting is a little too bright but in a horror film asylum scene sort of way, there are rickety old tables and chairs circa 1970, a juke box full of random tunes, a tender who knows how to pour a cheap strong drink and serve it up with a joke, old drunks who want to forget, young drunks who want to sit with the old drunks, a few regulars who will give you a territorial stare and a few who won't shut up. The restrooms are frightening, thought he bartender will actually take care of them if you point out they are not functional - yes, the same bartender who makes your drinks. Ahhhhhhh Flame Club. By far the best dive bar in downtown Sacramento. A dive bar for true dive afficianados. The kind of place where you can meet the oldest prostitute in Northern California, who claims that all her problems stem from people being jealous of the fact that she is from Hollywood. The kind of place where lost souls go to mingle and old men go to die. A killer juke box and a shuffleboard, stiff, cheap drinks and a laid back attitude complete the scene. Now, there are hipsters in Sacto that will tell you the Flame was better 7 years ago and in many ways they are right. Back then we called it Fight Club and the only thing keeping it from being a saloon were the swinging doors. Back then there was a certain underground feeling then that is gone now. The bar was frequented by equal parts rockabilly, underage kid, homeless crackhead, hipster and drunk. It was the kind of place you could stumble into at 3:00 pm on a Tuesday and find a drunken assembly member with his mistress sitting next to 3 retired bridge laborers telling war stories sitting next to a spoiled rich hipster reading Bukowski. Plus, the drinks were $2 then opposed to $2.50 now. But even with some conformity, it still can't be beat anywhere in town. read more

DIVE BAR FUN: On a whim, we stopped here one night because we had driven by a million times and were curious. We walked in and there are no windows (think Zelda's with no pizza) and it's like a different world, from the drunken older gentleman trying to pick up a girl 20 years his junior, to the lady that clearly smokes more than I breathe, and other nice folks just having a good time. Everyone there was friendly. Once when we were in there and some guy at the bar asked my bf, "hey! did you just touch my girl's ass?!" His "girl" (and my bf) looked shocked until the guy started laughing, saying, "nah, man just messing with you," adding, "she does have a nice ass though doesn't she!" Whew . . . thought there was going to be a bar fight! CASH ONLY: It's a cash only spot, but don't worry, they have an ATM and you don't need much because the drinks are cheap. STRONG: What I love the most are the strong drinks. It only takes 2 drinks there and it's over for me, yes, I will need a ride home, thank you. Nothing pretentious here - and avoid asking for a fancy or complicated drink (I did that the first time I went and the bartender looked at me like I had 10 heads). SHUFFLEBOARD: Don't miss out on the shuffleboard. It's great fun with a buzz and even though I suck, I still enjoy it (except when the drunk guy kept taking the pucks off the board - dude, keep your hands off my pucks!). It was us two girls having a girls nite out and I haven't been out in {...}. So we ended up here because I came here with another friend to watch; I believe it was the Super Bowl. Not really sure. I know I don't know where to go in Sacramento...And I'm not really interested in going to a club scene anyways. So as we entered, its quickly realized. Yea, this is the neighborhood bar/hangout, without a doubt. It's small, in other words known as a (hold in the wall spot). I know some of y'all know that term.. Lol The people are extremely friendly, and that's a good thing! The place is small and dark, with small shadows of lighten in the back ground of the bar area. It has ruffly 7 round tables and a jukebox for music. The jukebox is pretty neat. It was definitely 2016! I've never seen one like it before, usually you see those old school ones in these kind of establishment. Either way you still have to pay to listen to the music. Unfortunately they really don't have a lot to choose from, so don't none of the regulars put any money in it. They wait for the new comers to do it. They have maybe a 60 inch flat screen on the wall that most of the guys come to watch sports on. I didn't go to the ladies room, but my friend told me they had only the one stall restroom. That's a recipe for disaster... I'm just saying. The drinks were strong to say the lease and they are cheap. I thought it was interesting they had someone at the door where we enterer. Don't think I've ever seen that at a neighborhood bar before. There's a lot of in and out traffic, people are going outside to smoke. Some people come for maybe 1 drink and leave. Just a lot of movement. The people are a mixer of people, all ethnicities. It was relaxing for me as I watched my girlfriend/my friend have a wonderful time. The parking lot is a average and its right here behind the bar. The bar is in the downtown area, 16th street. I believe.. What happened to you Flame Club? I visited you a handful of years ago with he Dive bar connoisseurs group. At that time it was an awesome dive bar, just go grab a drink and mess around with the bartender. Fast forward to a week ago......got there around 8 or so, bartender from Boston, totally funny. The taco's are good, but I like more traditional tacos. Drinks still poured strong, but then, the clock struck 9:30.....All of a sudden the jukebox switches from mellow to ghetto, along with about 15 thugs that stumble in. Most of the patrons from earlier leave in 30 seconds and I feel like I have been transported to South Sac and not in Mid town anymore. We bounced soon after that. When I remembered...wasn't someone stabbed here once? Tip, come here early for getting your buzz on, carouse with the witty bartender, and scarf a taco or two, leave before you make a cameo on COPS. read more

Flame Club is that windowless concrete box in the decent sized parking lot on 16th near the interstate. It looks sketch as hell and with no windows, there is no way to peek inside to see if it's less intimidating on the inside. But I was there to meet up with some friends and eat some tacos for their Taco Tuesday deal ($1 tacos? Sold!), so I pushed on through. 6 or so wood tables are between the (full length) bar and some shuffle board. On the walls are the jukebox and (weirdly) 4(!) flat screen tvs. The bathroom is large and clean. It's bright inside and not too loud. I thought it was a good place to chill with friends. The tacos? They were pretty excellent. You order at the open door by the back door/bathroom. They have two types - meat or bean. I got both and actually preferred the bean ones. The drinks? All the basics and very strong. The bartender was totally willing to follow me on my idea to have a beer with a shot or so of whiskey (I read about it in an in-flight magazine. Swear!). My impression of the Flame Club? I like it. Despite looking as awful as a whiskey beer sounds, they both are eminently satisfying. I'll be back. read more

Flame used to be more street punk than ghetto, but times have changed, and only a handful of weatherbeaten tattooed regulars bear witness. Even the jukebox is all new-fangled. Question of the evening: does a 500 square foot dive bar really need three TVs, including one gigantic boob tube propped up in the middle of the room on a makeshift wooden pedestal? Discuss amongst yourselves. Like any bar with an electronic jukebox, your experience is only going to be as good (or as bad) as what happens to be playing during your stay. If you're lucky you'll get a lull in the music and take full advantage of it. For the record - we were the assholes who played the Cramps, Merle Haggard, and the Ramones. As the last song ended, a HUGE woman with an ass that was trying to crawl out of her pants was stuffing dollar bills into the machine, trying frantically to get back into the "in da club" vibe. Ugh. Drinks are still stiff, and large, although if you order a martini here the bartender (or one of his minions) may punch you in the face. Stick with straight shots, beer, or vodka + rocks. My other favorite night spot. Actually, I've dubbed this my favorite bar of all time. No credit cards... ATM machine, but I suggest bring a 20 and you'll be set. List time: 1. Cheapest AND strongest drinks ANYWHERE. Not either/or, but both. Two greyhounds will get you obliterated, and they are only 2.25. Wow. 2. Friendly staff. They recognize you once you've been more than twice in a month. The doorman will shake your hand and say what's up, and then ask for your friend's ID. Always made me feel like a big man. And the all of the people that work there are nice, non-pretentious, and they run a good show. They don't take any bullshit and will throw your drunkass out if need be. 3. Shuffle board. Always free. The table is a little warped but goddamn if isn't the most drunk fun you've had. 4. Bike accommodation. I never biked here, but there were always bikes inside (hipster alert!). I thought it was cool they got to bring them inside. 5. Digital Jukebox. All sorts of great stuff... bar classics, some more obscure rock, lots of non-mainstream rap, and oldies. Wasted a lot of money in this jukebox. And your selection will be up in under 20 minutes. 6. Seating. I always had a place to sit here. Lots of people cruise through for just one or two drinks before heading somewhere else, so you can usually get a spot pretty quick. 7. Taco tuesdays. I came once when I was a meat-eater (ahhh, blissful days of ignorance) and their tacos ROCKED. 1 buck on tuesdays. nuff said. 8. The people. The best bar characters you will ever meet. Small building, single room, low lighting, with a kitchen offering a small range of bar edibles. ENTERTAINMENT: 3 Notes: 3 TV's and a digital jukebox. I appreciated the Winter Olympics being played on the televisions. +2 for large shuffleboard table, -1 for it being in a corner so dim I don't think I could see well enough to play it. Put a wall sconce or a nightlight over that mofo! DRINKS: 3 Notes: Cheap drinks. Not a huge selection of hard liquors but they have the basics you need. Plus when you order a PBR, you get a chance to win a free one. (Hipsters, pay attention!) CROWD: 2/3 Notes: I've had several people tell me to pass this dive because the crowd is sketch. Sure there were a few questionables skulking around the entrance, but it wasn't bad and I didn't feel at risk. +1 for Old Dive Bar Guy with the froggy perma-whiskey voice, -1 for loud drunk chicks caterwauling off-key to R&B playing on the jukebox (come on now, who orders pink mixed drinks in martini glasses in a freaking dive?? What can I say? I love Flame club. It's a brick box, no windows. It's a definite dive bar. Don't be scared, just go in with $10-$15 (cash only, but there is an ATM) and leave drunk. It's not so much a romantic date night type place. It is a get messed up type place though. Drinks are now at the whopping price of $2.75! One Flame club drink is like 2-3 drinks anywhere else. Their mixed drinks come only with a splash of the mixer, so for those who like watch their calories and order vodka sodas (like me!) - don't do that here. Flame is one of my favorites. Definitely in my top 5 places to go for cocktails. Actually, #1 place to get drunk, like it or not. This is why flame is so awesome: * $2.25 cocktails. Believe me I would give this place 0 stars if I could. A few years ago I went here with a couple friends for a quick drink and chat before getting up early for work. When we went to pay the bartender took only my cash to pay for all the drinks. I told him that we would be paying separately. He said " no you are going to buy the first round, then they will buy the next". I let him know we just wanted the one drink. Dude proceeded to tell me I looked like I would be a pain in the a$$ as soon as I walked in and told me to get out. I think I'll dedicate my 100th review to a sketch little place called Flame Club. My friend lives right around the corner, and keeps telling me about this place. "It looks really sketchy and there are no windows, but the drinks are really strong and really cheap. So we get like 3 drinks here, then we hop on over across the street to La Garnacha and get a burrito there. OH AND THEY HAVE SHUFFLEBOARD." Sounds like a plan. So I get there, and it looks REALLY, REALLY sketch. There are actually 0 windows, and looks shady as hell. I go in, and find that the bartender is a really entertaining guy. I order a rum and coke, and it's $3. Super strong! Tasted like at least half of the drink was alcohol.. for $3. Good start. Off to shuffleboard. I lose a practice game against my friend, then DESTROY him on my first real game. Got some cheers from the random couple sitting next to the shuffleboard for getting the puck to land exactly on the edge without having it fall off for MAXIMUM POINTS! 21-9. Hustled, son! We had another drink before leaving, then headed off to other bars. At the end of the night, we came back again to Flame Club, and ordered one more. It didn't really hit me until about an hour later, in the midst of eating my burrito from La Garancha. Then BAM, KO, good night. Was a lot of fun! I do feel bad for that guy that was sitting there by himself at a table, drinking a beer and looking depressed. Other than that, fun place! read more

I am a conisseur of dive bars...and this one meets all the requirements. Not only is it stumbling distance from my house, but it is dark, almost cave-like. Love. With a bartender who is appropriately cynical, snide and bitter what other entertainment do you need besides the juke box (with a good selection as diverse as the bar-fly regulars)? Really...if you want a drink in a dark cozy place for cheap, with entertainment of the unexpected and random variety...there is no better dive! read more

Good bye old friend, I will miss you. You have been a great liver. You got me through college, but I do not think you will last long now that I know I live near Flame Club The drinks were cheap and oh so very strong, stumbling distance from my place, accessible for friends in midtown, and the bartender was AWESOME The fact they have cheap delicious tacos may help soak up the alcohol, but I also could see myself marathon drinking here. Other yelpers are right, its a windowless dive bar that could define seedy from the outside. But inside they have vintage lunch boxes and friendly patrons Come here. Come here soon.
