I've been going to Dr.Tabhaz for years and he excellent; however, as others have mentioned in their reviews, I'll be going elsewhere because of his terribly rude and sour receptionist. Recently, I called to make an appointment to have a veneer glued back on and for a routine cleaning. The first thing she did was ask me if I had been in before. When I said yes, for years, she immediately asked if had insurance; She simply could have looked at my records and asked me if anything has changed since my last appointment. She then proceeded to try to schedule a complete exam with x-rays before doing anything else. I told her the priority was obviously my missing veneer since there's a gaping hole in the front of my mouth. She said that it couldn't be done without an exam first as they had no idea what it would entail. I told her that it's a simple procedure and I've had it done many times before. She insisted that I had to pay for an exam first. Anyway, the way she hassled me was uncalled for and a bit confusing considering my straightforward request. To be clear, Sam is a great dentist, but life's too short to deal with nasty people. read more

I have been with Dr. Tahbaz since I was little and I just got my first cavity (that i can remember) at 24. He fixed it up right away and it was painless! It was a big cavity and I almost needed a root canal if he didn't fix it soon. Most dentists would have just waited till the root canal but he was able to stop it before it got to that point! read more

I needed bonding for a chipped tooth. They did not discuss anticipated costs ahead of time, and when I showed up, they wanted to charge an unreasonable amount. I decided to wait on treatment, but the receptionist said I could not reschedule if I was not seen then and there. For that, I left a poor revenue. The receptionist later called to apologize, and the doctor called personally to apologize as well, which I appreciated. read more

We actually moved to California 4 years ago - and we plan our trips to Chicago around our dental visits now- and still go see him as our dentist after all these years, and after moving far away. After moving to Chicago and needing a dentist, I turned to Yelp! to do my research. Since I had no dental insurance, I called several of the highest Yelp-ranked places and asked what their out-of-pocket price was for a new patient exam/cleaning/x-ray. My quotes were as follows: Smile Spa: $430 Water Tower Dental Care: $309 Lee Dental Care $130 (plus extra for x-rays) Old Town Dental Care: $95 As you can imagine, the decision pretty much made itself. I called Old Town back and scheduled my appointment. The day of, I had to wait 20 minutes past my appointment time in the waiting room, but after that, everything was butter (or perhaps fluoride paste, given the circumstances?). As others have mentioned, Sam's demeanor was friendly and professional. After shooting the x-rays, he got to work cleaning my teeth, something my old dentist back home in small town Minnesota had always delegated to an assistant. As he worked, we had a nice foreign-policy oriented chat (he being Iranian-born and I having spent time living abroad in China). Though my flossing habits were obviously lax, he saved the bulk of his criticism for the Chinese Communist regime and left me with a polite urging to take better care of my teeth (and the requisite complimentary bag of dental goodies). When I mentioned that my permanent retainer was coming unglued, Sam went ahead and re-cemented it on the spot, free of charge. He then explained my x-ray results to me (everything was fine), set me up with my next appointment, and I was on my way. Overall, I was very satisfied with the experience, and will definitely be back again. 2012 UPDATE: I just got back from having my permanent retainer (installed some years ago by my orthodontist) repaired for free by Sam. This was the absolute best dental experience I've ever had. I called in three hours before and they fit me in for an emergency appointment as a new patient. This office has one dentist and they only see one person at a time, they do it right. They don't have unnecessary fancy shiny equipment and they really care about their attentiveness. The dentist makes you feel at ease and goes out of his way to explain every last detail to you and doesn't rush you out. I never thought I would be writing a positive review to go out of my way for a DENTAL office. This place is top notch, I have no complaints. I've been going to Dr. Tahbaz for several years now. I've always been terrified of the dentist but now it feels like going to a friends twice a year. I know Angie will call me to remind me to come in, and when inevitability my schedule has changed in the last six months she'll happily put me on a waitlist so I can still get in on time. I know fun music from the 60s will be playing and Dr. Tahbaz will ask about work and check in before we get started. I like that he is there throughout the entire visit, he doesn't just pop in after an assistant cleans my teeth. I just trust that he knows how my teeth are doing because he spends more time looking at them than my previous dentists. I've been endlessly disappointed by the dentists I've encountered in Chicago. They have been: 1. Extremely expensive 2. Suspiciously out of practice 3. Overly willing to find more problems than necessary 4. Downright rude to their assistants 5. Etc. The thing about dentists is that you can go to one who will tell you that you have zero cavities, while another will tell you that you have 10. How does one determine who is lying, and who is being honest? Furthermore, how does one determine who actually KNOWS what they are doing? And who's willing to just say that your teeth are in great shape because they don't have the knowledge or contemporary equipment to know otherwise? Before I met Dr. Tabhaz I was highly concerned for dentistry in general. I felt like my teeth were never going to be truly happy. However, I now feel great about my dentist visits. Not only does Dr.Tabhaz have a great demeanor, but he KNOWS what he's doing, and he proves it to you. He shows you the problem and explains how he's going to fix it. Regardless of the situation, he makes you feel at ease and comfortable during your visits. As an added bonus, his prices are extremely reasonable. The only hangup I had was having to wait 20 minutes for almost every appointment I've had. But no one's perfect, right? read more

I called to make a new patient appointment. I left a message. Never heard back. Called again a couple days later. Angie answered. Put me on hold for long periods at least 3 or 4 times. Asked me what day I could come in, rather than telling me what appointments were actually available. Told me that none of the days I recommended (which were weeks in advance) were available and that she'd call me back. She lectured me that if she did call me back with an appointment, that I would in fact be able to return her call within minutes to confirm. Considering I didn't even have an appointment, I was taken aback by this attitude. She hung up the phone. I remember being confused, like, do I even have a chance at getting an appointment? After waiting a week for her to call back, I called her back again. It took her two days to return that call. When I did finally talk to her again, she was condescending and rude. Not only did she have to re-take all my insurance information (which, she had already done last time) but she talked down to me when I was confused about what my brand new plan covers. I finally scheduled the first available appointment.... in two months. I understand being popular and everything, but can't you just stop taking new patients if you're going to make them wait two months? I ended up scheduling an appointment with a different dentist. I'm seeing him next week. And his receptionist was actually nice to me. read more

Dr. Tahbaz is great! He is very professional and friendly. I'm typically very nervous when I go to the dentist, but his friendly manner was able to put me at ease - I think this is the least stress-free I've ever been at the dentist. I will admit that it's been a few years since I've been to the dentist and he didn't even try to make me feel guilty about it. His office isn't terribly modern (in the words of the previous reviewer), but it is clean. He also has a number for off times in case of an emergency. Hopefully it will never be used, but it's nice to know that it's available! His prices also seem very reasonable which is great because I don't have dental insurance and currently unemployed, I don't have very much to pay. The cost was definitely within my budget. read more

Not really impressed by Old Town Dental at all. The conversation between me and the doctor did throw me off. This was right before the teachers strike and though I work in education, I do not like talking politics with people I really don't know. It was awkward and not really a great way to get to know your new clients. Then he talked mess about my last dentist the rest of the time. Again, not really impressed. I did want to trust his medical opinion, but I just had this feeling in my gut telling me not to. I wanted a second opinion. I called my old dentist as soon as I left and scheduled a meeting with my Chicago dentist soon after. Angie was helpful at the start when trying to make an appointment, but has yet to call me about a follow up appointment. I even called to ask about this three weeks later and she said she would. Nope. After talking to my future hubby about my experience, we both felt they were screening me. Their treatment of me led me to this thought. Sometimes I get that and then doctors see how much money Ive put into my mouth already in the last three years...then they know how much Im invested. But not here. How sad if this is true. I went back to my former Chicago dentist, despite the cost. I just wanted someone I could trust. Two stars because the doctors comments on my possible dental plan got me thinking about other alternatives I did not know were open to me...even though I was told they were good short term solutions only. I switched from Halsted Street Dental to Old Town Dental and have not regretted it for a minute. Dr. Tahbaz is great...he does all of his own cleanings (instead of hiring hygienists) which is so rare these days. He also did a great job replacing my silver fillings that had apparently started decaying with new white seals that look 100x better. He did this instead of the crown that was recommended at Halsted Street Dental, which was obviously a sham. Angie, the receptionist, is also great! Although I do recommend getting some sort of computerized system for their appointments because the paper and pen appointment book that she currently uses is kind of old school. read more

Like many people, I don't have dental insurance. The procedure recommendations and price quotes I got from several other dentists had me in high anxiety -- and I couldn't afford these things, so I just went without care. Then I randomly stumbled upon Old Town Dental, and it turns out there are MUCH SIMPLER and less intensive ways to correct my issues. Rather than crowns, I just needed some fillings. Dr Tahbaz does excellent work. He has a great personality and makes the experience comfortable. He is efficient and no-nonsense, and clearly explains everything he is doing. I picked Old Town Dental Care for my annual cleaning in 2008 because they accepted my insurance and had good reviews on Yelp. Up until then, I had not been to a dentist in Chicago. I was still in college and would visit my dentist back home instead. I have been satisfied with Old Town Dental Care and have gone back for my yearly appointments the last two years as well. Dr. Tahbaz is professional and kind. I haven't had a dental emergency yet, so I can only attest to his prowess at regular cleanings -- he makes my smile shine! You do need to book your cleanings quite far in advance if you want an after-work slot, so keep that in mind. I have no idea how it is getting in on short notice for an emergency, since (knock on wood) I have avoided those so far. read more

Ahhhhhhh! So what do you do when you have an emergency (involving pain+metal), your orthodontist is closed on a Friday, and you have an HMO dental plan?!?! Umm... PANIC! Or....better yet, just call Dr. Tahbaz's dental practice! I called over 15 different orthodontists that were open around 4:15pm yesterday. No one would treat me citing "I wasn't their patient" or they simply weren't open. I called Old Town Dental, spoke to the lovely receptionist Angie, made an appointment, paid a nominal fee out of pocket, and soon, there was no more pain and no more metal stabbing me in the cheek! It feels weird to really like your dentist, but I liked him so much I feel it necessary to rave about him to all of my friends and write a Yelp review (which I don't do often). I had not been to the dentist in probably a year and a half as I was searching for someone in the city. I really hate the dentist so I did a lot of research and came across Dr. Tahbaz. Everyone seems to rave about him so I thought I would give him a shot. I will say I tried to make an appointment a while ago, left a VM with his assistant Angie and did not hear back. I decided I needed to be a little more aggressive so I called a few more time and was able to get a hold of her and schedule an appt. I went in for a cleaning and his receptionist, Angie, was really nice. Dr. Tahbaz first took my X-rays, then cleaned my teeth himself (which is different from any dentist that I've been at, normally it is hygienist). He discovered that I need quite a bit of work done, which I wasn't surprised by but I was a little skeptical because I've been trained to think dentist are continually trying to screw your over. Angie was so helpful and quoted everything out for me and walked me through potential costs at my next appointment. I made another appt. for my fillings and boy was he right. He walked my through each step and showed me the originally hidden cavities after they were exposed. They were huge. He did a great job numbing me up. Not only that, but I can just tell (the next day) that he did an excellent job with the fillings. Truly a talented dentist. read more

Overall satisfying and thorough experience. I went to a "corporate" dental office and they were extremely rude and told me that i needed over $1,000 worth of work done. so, naturally, i went to get a second opinion and i am beyond grateful that i did. I found Dr. Tahbaz through a referral from work. my colleague raved about how he travels from the suburbs just to get his teeth cleaned by Dr. tahbaz. so i figured i'd try him out. His office is in the heart of Old Town, so locating his office was easy. I walked in and the receptionist, Angie, was extremely helpful and accurate with my insurance. which was a relief because dealing with insurance and payments is always such a headache. When i told Dr. Tahbaz about my previous experience and quote i received he said that i did not need any of that done. HE SAVED ME FROM UNNECESSARY DENTAL WORK. not only did i get my teeth cleaned and fixed, but i found my new dentist. I cannot be more satisfied with dr. tahbaz and his office. read more

I selected Old Town Dental as my new dentist because they are in-network for my insurance and within walking distance of my home. I have used their services three times in a 4-month period and I have since selected a new dentist due to my dissatisfaction with Old Town Dental. As an in-network dentist, Old Town Dental has entered a contract with the insurance provider to report any service codes that they wish to charge and to collect specific allowed amounts for any given procedure. For my first visit, Old Town Dental did not report a service code to my insurance. However, I have a receipt where they charged $19 for a service which my insurance provider considers to be included with another service that was reported. And for both the 2nd and 3rd visits, Old Town Dental overcharged by a substantial amount. When I confronted Old Town Dental regarding the overcharge, they had a story ready that might make sense if you did not know that they are limited to specific allowed amounts by contract. I have escalated the billing issue to the Grievance Department of my insurance provider who has agreed with my claim. They have been attempting to work with Old Town Dental; however, there are seemingly endless delays from Old Town Dental of a sort that I would describe as "smoke and mirrors." Nearly four months have now passed since Old Town Dental was formally notified of the overcharge and I have not yet received the full refund. Due to the response from Old Town Dental, I believe that my situation is not unique so I recommend that anyone who has used Old Town Dental as an in-network provider to examine their claim statements for probable overcharging. Update 9/15/2017: I received a near immediate response from Old Town Dental upon my posting of this public review. They settled up my account. Hopefully this develops into a learning opportunity. read more

BEWARE! I called this place because a small piece of my tooth broke. The receptionist Renee didn`t even ask for the reason I want to be seen by the dentist but she only asked about my insurance information. After few minutes she called me and she said that they are in network with my insurance and she immediately proceeded to schedule my appointment. I thought it was weird that in the midst of pandemic crisis when dental offices are closed or taking only emergencies they were able to give me same day appointment and I thought it was even more weird that she even didn`t ask about the reason I`m going but I went there for my appointment. At the time of arrival I noticed that Renee was not wearing a mask or gloves. She handed me some paperwork and a pen that she`s been using and there was no hand sanitizer for patients who walk in. She explained what the paperwork is and one of the sheets was agreement to have six or seven procedures performed during this visit. Wait a minute! I have never been asked to sign agreement to certain procedures without having exam with the dentist first. Three of the listed procedures were exam, bitewings and cleaning and the other procedures I couldn`t understand but I think some fillings were listed. If I am a first time patient how could they possibly know that I need fillings that they required from me to sign agreement for? I told Renee that I don`t need bitewings and cleaning because I got them few months ago and it is not the time for next cleaning yet. She almost started yelling at me that I didn`t tell her over the phone what is my visit for. Well, she didn`t ask me and I belive it is her responsibility to ask the patient when she is scheduling the appointment. She said that in this case I have to pay out of my pocket for the visit and for the tooth fix because the insurance is not going to cover it. How come? If the insurance will cover the exam if I was there for cleaning why not covering it for tooth fix too? I asked her to call the insurance and to check with them if they will cover it. She pretended that she is calling them but from what I was hearing she was not talking to anyone at all and didn`t ask anyone about coverage of the procedures I needed. When she was done with the supposed call she told me that I have only two options - to take the treatment plan she offered me or to come back another time to fix the tooth because the doctor doesn`t have time now. I was more than shocked and asked how does she know that the doctor won`t be able to fix it today. He even didn`t see it yet and the broken tooth was not that bad at all. She said that when she scheduled this appointment she gave time only for the listed procedures (that I don need at all) and for that reason the doctor won`t be able to fix the tooth because I either have to take the whole plan or leave!!! I don`t know what kind of insurance frauds they do to take money from the insurance but I think that those people have to be investigated and shut down because their business practices are not only unethical but illegal too! Dr. Sam Tahbaz and Angie are the greatest. Friendly, professional, organized. Clean, comfortable and stylish office. As painless as dental work gets. I haven't had any major work done over the years, just some cavities filled. But, they fillings have held up great, and the work was painless. The doc does all the cleanings himself. He also has an amazing memory and can seem to pick up the conversation where you left off 6 moths ago. Angie always calls a day or two before your appointment with a friendly reminder, since you probably booked it 6 months ago. You always get some top quality full-size samples of toothpaste, brushes and floss. I remember once years ago they lost my appointment (this is not typical, as I mentioned they are very organized), but they squeezed me in no problem and even paid for a cab ride for me so I wouldn't be late getting back to work. I have been going to Dr. Tahbaz for over 15 years. He is the best Dentist I have ever been to. One of the things I like about him is that he does all the work himself. He even takes the x-rays and cleans your teeth. You only deal with him, no Dental Hygienist. He takes his time and does the work right the first time. My teeth look better now then they ever have thanks to Dr.T. His receptionist Angie is so nice to deal with. The staff at Old Town Dental are the best. Dr. Unterbrunner is very professional, caring, seems genuinely concerned about the care of your mouth, and a good conversationalist; which for me always helps because I don't like the dentist (sorry Doc). Very friendly and caring staff, and an awesome office; you would never think that much space exists going up the small staircase. And I love that I can watch TV while getting work done. I think this takes the mind off of what is really going on. The office manager is extemely understanding to financial woes, and they work with you. I had to have some oral surgery done, I forget the surgeons name, but he was pretty nice and professional as well. I was scared out of my mind as I have only had my wisdom teeth removed (and was put to sleep for) but I had to have two teeth extracted and I thought it was the worst thing that has ever happened to me but I think my reservations about this part of my treatment is all in my head. Dr. Tahbaz is AMAZING! I was in so much pain before i saw him. I am self pay and his prices were fair. That's hard to find. I always feel scammed and he didn't make me feel that way. I have a HUGE fear of the dentist and Dr. Tahbaz talked me through everything. I felt very comfortable, especially during this pandemic. Everything was very clean.
