Much like the Brickerville house, I often find myself driving by this place on my way to Shady Maple or the Green Dragon thinking "I ought to stop in there some day." Well I did. And I am glad. While returning from one of our excursions, my aunt, cousins and I were looking for a place to stop and refuel. Eureka! This was my chance, and we weren't too far away. So I navigated them blindly to the parking lot where they were somewhat surprised by my choice. Still, once we were inside and could smell the kitchen we couldn't wait to see the menu. First round was soups; French Onion, Snapping Turtle, and two others I can't seem to recall (shame on me for not having an account here at the time). What I do remember however, was the high volume of traffic on the table caused by spoons and sliding bowls from person to person saying "You have to try this!" With the exception of the turtle soup they were all delicious. And then out came my entree; Elk Steak. I never had elk, never before saw it on the menu, never really even though about it before, but boy was it good! What can I say? I liked the setting, I liked the service and I liked the food. Normally love this place but not today. Came in for a beer and something to eat. Took over five minutes sitting at the bar to even be acknowledged. Once given a menu and a beer it was at least that long again to get my order placed. I had the Shepherds Pie from the "Pub Fare" part of the menu. It was delicious but very small portion for the price. Then to make matters worse, my glass sat almost empty for another five to ten minutes while the bartenders continued to worry more about pre-closing or their regulars than the rest of us. I was going to have a second beer but when the bartender asked me with almost disdain in her voice, I changed my mind. Please improve the service standards or you will end up closing like so many other great places. read more

The food is not outstanding but as I told my date, they do not try to be what they are not. The food is good the service is also good. One of the things that we have been looking for has been a quiet restaurant. If one is a follower of my posts, it might be noted that we want good food, good service, and quiet. There seems to be a trend that loud is good. That might be true but not for my dollars. Tonight, hit the spot, a quiet, good meal with good service. We split two appetizers I had the vegetarian bowl, and she had the vegetarian wrap. Been here many times over the years when visiting Ephrata. We like "both sides" of the place and enjoy it. Went for dinner June 5th on our anniversary. Had a nice bottle of wine-the appetizer was on point (had the Burrata-it was the bomb) The problem was the prime rib. Cooked to order, but over half of mine was fat or gristle (inedible). My wife also ordered prime rib-hers had so much good meat she needed a box for the leftover-looked fabulous too. Attentive service-the young lady was on the ball and did well. Just that my cut of meat really sucked and was certainly not on par with my past meals thru the years. I hope they can do better next trip. read more

OK, so I went to this place last Saturday, following a recommendation made to my girlfriend by one of her co-workers. Looking at the building and the parking lot, it all seemed OK. Main entrance is in the back of the building, right off of the parking lot. As you go through the first door, you are faced with two doors: one for eating and one for drinking?!?! WTF?! It turns out that one door lets you get into the bar and the other into to the dining room. When you open either door, you still have access to both areas of the restaurant, so what is the purpose of the damn dual doors? After 2 seconds of confusion, the hostess appeared and guided us to a table. Not a regular table, but a slanted table, because the floor was not flat. There was a tilt to the floors from the center of the room towards the front of the house. While we were waiting, we looked around the room. A few Abraham Lincoln decorations, some faded and stained prints on the wall, a sideboard that smelled of mold, right next to the table, and a carpet that has seen better days. At least the table cloth was clean. There was a table filled with screaming people. Not children, they were all adults (50+) who never heard of "indoor voice". I wish the restaurant management had some common sense to calm them down and maintain decorum, after all, we were not in a dive bar or a night club. Well, at least, the room got quiet after they left. The waiter arrived and was just as nice as the hostess and provided a pitcher full of ice water (oh what a blessing on a 93 degree day). When the menus arrived, it took almost no time at all to determine that the choices were not attractive, and not even matching the high prices (hovering close to $30) listed next to their descriptions. All the entrees were run of the mill, ordinary and indistinguishable from what you may have at home, in the back of the fridge. Roasted tomato soup, arrived and while the base stock was sort of OK (Kind of like Campbell's canned tomato basil soup), they had thrown in some unidentified bits of meat that totally ruined the flavor. It just came accompanied by a spoon. No croutons, or anything else. Gave it a 3 on a scale of 0-10. I passed on the grilled Caesar salad. What kind of idiot grills lettuce? If I wanted to eat wilted greens, I can go fish them out of the dumpster and not pay almost 10 bucks for them. This one gets 0 out of 10. French Dip Sandwich was sort of OK. Not great, just OK with lousy bread, but the stale potato chips fished out of a bag that must have been open since last night, were the pits. The chips were terrible, not just overly salty and stale, but had also lost their crispiness. How hard is it to make chips in a restaurant? Slice the damn potato, season it, drop it in the fryer, take it out, let the oil drain for a minute, serve. This one gets a 3 out of 10, because I am generous. The Prime Rib Sandwich was inedible. The meat stunk and had a horrible taste. I quickly spit it out and sent the plate back to the kitchen. The fries, were OK. As a replacement for the disgusting sandwich, I got a Grilled Chicken sandwich, figuring that you can't screw up the boring chicken breast. Boy, was I wrong. I took a bite and gave up on it. All I ate were fries and ice-water. The two sandwiches get a score of zero out of ten. When the bill came, surprise, they did remove the nasty sandwich, but they charged me $3 extra for "fries". Well, the fries were part of the disgusting sandwich price, and one would expect them to be part of the replacement sandwich price and have the whole deal end up being an even swap; but, no! They really had to stick me for three more dollars for fries and water. So, after some 40+ bucks (after tip, because the waiter was nice), I had to go to the car hungry and eat a protein bar that was left in the backseat from the night before. I highly recommend that you avoid this smelly place, with bad food and high prices. read more

Food was worse than eating at McDonald's,meat had a smell to it and used the cheapest bread on both our meals. The substitute meal they gave us when we complained they charged us the higher meal price no extra discount was given. Other food choices were very mediocre. Food and drinks are acceptable for a bar-like atmosphere. Service is TERRIBLE! When sitting at the bar it is reasonable to expect that you would like a drink served to you within 10 minutes of sitting at the bar. Waited 8 minutes for bartender to acknowledge my presence and longer for a beer. Did finally get a drink and a menu. Waited a long time for actual food to arrive. Had to ask for utensils to eat with and fetch my own salt and pepper. Again food is edible and this would easily be a 3.5 star review but SERVICE SUCKS! If I wanted to get my own seasoning and hound someone for utensils I would eat at home. read more

This is only for the summer Tiki Bar that sits behind. Nice concept but a major flaw has hampered my experiences. AWFUL bartenders. Having been a bartender for 6 years, there are some do's and do nots. A major do not is lack of personality. I would rather talk to a light pole. Pretty girls are one thing but those pretty faces mean squat, if the effort is minimal. Last time, she made a Mudslide and skimped on the Baileys. It was weak. I called her on it and was shrugged off like she could cared less. There was no offer to make up for it. She spent the rest of the time on her phone and flirting with a guy as he hooked him up with free drinks. Tisk Tisk. That also falls on the establishment for not training properly. read more

The service is absolutely garbage--it ranges from apathetic to hostile, and you get the sense that the people bringing you the food and the drinks don't care in the least. Questions about the food bring disinterested "I don't know"s and rolled-eyes. The building itself is historic and impressive, but suffers from an identity crisis. The owner is going for some weird hillbilly ambience, which really detracts. The "tiki barn" behind the restaurant is tacky, dirty, and is like drinking in a redneck's parking lot with a palm tree nearby. Get carryout, and avoid the bad attitudes and crappy ambience. read more

Pretty average food. As usual, the Yelp reviews are more accurate than the Google reviews which are overrated for this place. If you plan on going tonight, you might want to know that they ran out of potatoes before 8pm. Which is probably a good thing since our mashed potatoes were crunchy. I was expecting something way better with all of the good reviews. We called at 7 to make reservations for 8 and the guy acted like it was a problem. When we got there at 730 we were the only ones there. Actually, we were the only ones there the whole time we were there. Starting out we got mozzarella sticks for an app... 4 small sticks for $6.00... NOT WORTH the money! I had the fried fish and fries... The fish was a little over fried but still good. My fiancé had the sea bass. It looked nice the way it was plated and he said it tasked ok. The atmosphere was great bc we were the only ones there. Very quiet. We spend $50.00 on dinner for 2... For the first time there we were pleased. The dining side was a little fancy so we felt out of place but the service was great, our waitress stayed on top of everything. We got the potato skins for the appetizer, they were 3 large halfs with a good amount of toppings. For my meal I got the Mac n cheese which was really good. The mixture of bread crumbs and bacon made it stand out from other Mac n cheese dishes. The dinner menu looked a little pricey but the lunch menu (all day) was very reasonably priced. First, I would suggest that you call ahead and make a reservation, especially on Friday or Saturday night, as this is only one of a few "nice" restaurants in the Ephrata area. You can look at their menus on line to get an idea of what's available. We the Crab Sauté to start. It was very good, a fair amount of jumbo lump crab meat, but there was a little to much sliced red pepper and there could have been more sauce. My wife had the Autumn Chicken, which was very tasty. I had always wanted to try ostrich, so I had the Rosemary Rubbed Grilled Ostrich and was pleasantly surprised with how good it was. My only issue was that I felt the portion was a bit small. The dessert menu was rather small (I.e. 4 items) and unimaginative. We would definitely go back again. read more

Three stars mainly for the service. The building itself is charming enough, the decor is all Abraham Lincoln which I understand. It was the food that actually surprised me and not in a good way. I started with French onion soup which was very good. For the main course I had the prime rib and added a crab cake. Prime rib was just ok nothing special but the crab cake was a huge disappointment, very watery texture and had a strange taste. Admittedly I not a expert when it comes to crab cakes but I have had some that were very good and this wasn't one of them. My wife said dont waste it so I gave it to her and needless to say she didn't make it pass the first bite. The bill with tip was an even hundred for three of us (my son had a burger) so not the best value. Service was excellent though and that's where the three stars come from. read more

How this place got 3.5 stars is beyond me. Been curious about this place for a while. We had the chicken Chesapeake and the halibut. First of all, the appitizer didn't come until after the entrees arrived. Strike one. We found all the food to be tasteless and the portions tiny (the halibut steak was 2x3" for $23). This place is famous for their burgers. Can't say I've had one to judge but maybe they should stick to burgers they have no business serving actual entrees. Took the family here for lunch and sat in the dining room. Very nice waiter who gave recommendations on his favorite menu foods. I had the roasted tomato soup and chicken cheese steak, my husband had a French onion soup and grilled Reuben, my son got the Mac and cheese and my daughter got the mini tacos. Everyone loved their meal and ate every bite. The environment was relaxing and has a nice historic feel. Can't wait to go back for a date night and to see their dinner menu. read more

We REALLY wanted this place to be good since it is less than a mile from home. It wasn't. Her baked tomato soup was not hot. My hot roast beef with gravy not only was not hot (picture semi-coagulation gravy) but it was supposed to be served on Texas toast. What is the key thing about Texas toast?? THAT IT IS TOASTED!! This came on soggy fat white bread not toasted at all. GROSS. The menu is limited and uninspired at best, then to have it poorly prepared to boot?!?! The food was delicious. We had the crab dip, Chesapeake chicken, stuffed salmon, and creme brulee. All four items were presented beautifully. This place is hit or miss. We used to enjoy going here, but our last visit really left us disappointed. My Chesapeake chicken sandwich was dry with minimal amount of crab dip on it. It was missing the cheese that I specifically requested on top. The potato chips are cheap and definitely out of a bag. My fiancé ordered a steak and it was inedible. It appeared to be old meat. He took one bite and couldn't eat it. He sent it back and the bartender easily agreed to take it off the bill.
