This is an okay place to go, though reportedly the beer (of which I didn't have any) is a lot better here than the food - which leaves things to be desired. We went twice - once for the regular menu, and once to check out the special Oktoberfest menu. The cuisine is supposedly German-ish, though honestly with more emphasis on the -ish than I'd like. As an actual German, I of course did not expect to step back over the Atlantic for an evening, but there's some very basic problems that I wouldn't really want to see even on this side of the pond. I had the sausage sampler starter, which comes with a Bratwurst and a Weisswurst - and there we run into a bit of an issue. You see, Weisswurst is something VERY specific, and even with lenience on the side of the ingredients (though why you couldn't make a veal sausage in the US doesn't really track either) there just is one thing above all else that Weisswurst is: poached, and NOT GRILLED. If there was ever any one characteristic to distinguish this sausage from the myriad of its German kin, it would be that. To grill a Weisswurst makes it, well, kind of not a Weisswurst. It's like ordering a steak and getting it boiled - even if it's the same cut, it just isn't a steak. Alright, sin committed, now let's see what they can salvage. Answer: not much. Aside from the horrifically wrong preparation, the flavor is also not very good. They apparently read up on the dish and noted it's made with lemon, but having (quite evidently) never had the real thing they just got the spices all wrong. It's far too citrusy, and tastes nothing like the original. Parsley (the other traditionally predominant ingredient) does seem to be there, as do some of the other aromatics, but it simply doesn't work. Add to that the horrible dryness imparted by the inappropriate grilling, and you got one tough SOB (S standing for sausage, naturally). The Bratwurst, however, fares much better. It's not too far off what I know from home, and though it's a little shorter and thicker than what I'm used to, it tastes passable. Grilling here is of course entirely the right thing to do, and they very clearly know how to grill it well. Thumbs up for this one, and my advice, quite honestly, would be to just switch this to a double Bratwurst and forget about the Weisswurst if you can't do it right. Main course was Schnitzel, another perennial German classic. Why they put cheese on it, though, I cannot say. It would have been a decent piece of meat without it, yet somehow they felt the need to melt a slab of American on an otherwise passable Schnitzel. I wouldn't exclude the chance that there's some place in Germany where they do that, but it's nowhere I've ever been. Very weird. Aside from the cheese, though, it was alright. Now for my biggest gripe, though. When we came back another night to try the Oktoberfest menu, we got the Butchers Plate, which not only sounded like the sausage sampler starter they have on the regular - but was nearly identical to it. The same two sausages, but stocked up with a modestly-sized piece of grilled pork. The sausages were as before, same complaints, same praises. The pork was unacceptably dry, and only being pressed for time stopped me from sending it back. Grilling an open cut of pork is tricky stuff, and they failed on all levels. It was like sandpaper, and though the flavor was alright it was ruined completely by the crumbly texture and complete lack of succulence. What's more, the "hot potato salad" (which apparently means "warm potato salad", not spicy) was an absolute disaster. I love seeing southern-German-style potato salad in the US, i.e. not made with mayonnaise - but what they apparently didn't read in the recipe was that it's made with VINEGAR. This one was not. As a result, it tasted flat, soapy, and absolutely disgusting. It's hard to screw up a dish as simple as potato salad, but they did it. THE worst potato salad I have ever eaten in the US, and believe you me, I've had some very dire stuff. The second side was sauerkraut, and - fair's fair - that was absolutely perfect. These people clearly know how to cook in terms of technical skill, they simply need some SERIOUS advice with recipes. However, the real punchline came with the price. The sausage sampler is $12, for two sausages and some pretzel bites. These same, identical sausages, plus a small piece of pork, and with potato salad and sauerkraut (not exactly luxury items) instead of pretzel suddenly shoot up to $21. That's nearly DOUBLE the price! I rarely feel ripped off with the generous US portion sizes, but this made me have flashbacks to pizza at the Piazza del Campo. Luckily this dish is only available one week out of the year. If you are gripped by sausage fancy, get the sampler starter, and avoid this trap. As for the rest... The people are fantastic, they're attentive, courteous, and always in high spirits. The venue is great. Straight A for all that. C- for the grub, F for the potato salad. read more

Stopped in mid afternoon on Saturday for a couple of drinks and for take out. I went to the bar and was able to get a drink fairly quick since there was only one other at the bar. I ordered the Little Italy (hot italian sausage sandwich) for take out and the sandwich was very good and there was a good portion of sauteed peppers on it. read more

This place has been good to me. The food is tasty and the prices are reasonable. Also the ambiance is very nice. I would give this place a try especially if downtown State College is a zoo because a football game or other equally annoying event that makes downtown unbearable. read more

Great beer variety on tap and great sandwiches. A little far from town but worth the ride. Among faves on the menu are Baked brie, the broker sandwich and the central park. Love the NY theme. During the winter, I found it especially nice since they have a fire place you can sit by. Ambiance is great. Staff is average. I visited so many times I couldn't count and almost always had one of two servers and each time, they didn't recognize me. If I were in a bigger city I would give this place 3 stars but for State College it deserves 4 stars. Beer Selection: 3 Stars - good selection of staple beers but not much in the way of micro brews or lesser known beers. Ambiance: 4 Stars - I liked the naked celing and the fire place. It reminded me of a restaurant that I would find in the Bay Area. It had a cool pub feeling to it as well. However, it was a bit empty for a Saturday night. Food: 4 Stars: Good for State College. To be fair, I tend to hold restaurants in San Francisco to a higher standard. The wings had good flavor but I wish they were a bit more spicy. Their sausages seem to be their specialty. Stopped in for a beer with friends. Went to sit at the bar and after sitting down we were told the seats were reserved for the owner. We picked up and moved to a table near the bar and waited. AND waited. No one came to take our order on a Thursday at 4pm. They were not busy either. After 10 minutes we left. I came here for my birthday dinner because I wanted to change it up rather than going to my usual picks. We got the fried pickles and egg rolls for appetizers, they were very good. I got the buffalo chicken wrap, as did my friend. Our first bite we looked at each other and said "what is this" the sauce on the chicken, I swear, tasted just like applesauce!!! We asked if we got the write thing and the waitress told us that is their 'buffalo' sauce. She even admitted it is not hot but it is sweet. The wrap itself was good but the sauce on the chicken was a no for me. I don't know if I'll go back but I could always give it another go on a different menu item. Their food and service, as someone who has eaten a lot German and Austrian food, was entirely satisfactory, as they say over there. I can see how some of the stories could arise about lack of help and standing around, but as am American, you can just walk up to them and ask for help, and I have foudn that they will always give it to you, such as seating you, or fixing things. I had the Brooklyn Sandwich today (Roast Beef & Swiss). It was the best sandwich I had in forever. Great food. I gave a 4 star cause the waitress who was nice and professional, we had to ask her for things like drink refills, ketchup, check but it was lunch time so they get a little busy and understand. Portions are huge! Had come to state college for the annual blue and white game and decided to try this place out on a busy Friday night. The place had plenty of seating and we got right to our table after walking in! Very pleasant for all the hustle and bustle during that weekend. Had ordered the wiener schnitzel and the portion was huge. The meal included potatoes and red cabbage. It needed some additional seasoning, but overall the meal was pretty good. "Jagerschnizel", Which is breaded pork , Madeira wine mushroom sauce, served with spaetzle and tangy red cabbage. It was delicious. Make sure you check the menu, there are some dishes you can only get at 4pm and this is one of them. We got there at 1:30 and I saw the menu and was disappointed I could not get it. I wanted to try it more than anything else. I mentioned my error to the waitress and she said she will ask the kitchen if they have dinner prepped yet and if so, could they make it. Well they came through and made it! So nice of them to do this for us. My sister and I both got this dish and we loved it. The cabbage was sweet and tangy, and spaetzle cooked perfectly, the sauce was great with the spaetzle and pork chop. Chop was tender and very tasty. I will go back again and try the Curry Salmon. Anxious to go again soon. So yes I recommend you go. And get there at 4!!. Place is Clean, excellent service and busy atmosphere. Has a bar there also if you drink. Have fun! So we get their and my friends order their drinks then the waiter completely forgot about me. The service was ok he was either their or he wasn't and he screwed up my friend's drink, but he took care of us. We just had appetizers to eat and honestly the food wasn't bad, but not the greatest. We did a to-go order here, and it was ready in just 20 minutes! We got the Jäger Schnitzel, Bavarian Schnitzel, and Chicken-Artichoke salad. All were delicious and well prepared. What an interesting selection of food. Though most of the offerings don't quite fit what I enjoy, they do have some lighter and more "traditional" food for those of us who find ourselves sitting with friends or family at the table who are enthralled. Everyone loved their meal. Service was pretty good too, a bit slow but for the dinner rush it was not bad. As mentioned, I was dining during a dinner rush, and the noise level was nearly too much for us. Looking around, I noticed the restaurant is more-or-less a hard-surfaced cube of acoustic hell. There wasn't one soft item to absorb sound. We were yelling across to each other over dinner, thus creating even more noise to echo off each wall of that building. I ordered a Manhattan salad and added tuna. Total salad cost is $17. When I got it was the size of a side salad. It had a small amount of lettuce, 3 olives, 2 roasted red peppers, a small amount of potatoes with an awful sauce, and a small piece of tuna. For the price I was extremely disappointed. I ordered the Arugula salad with flat steak medium well and apple strudel for desert. Everything was absolute perfection! The waiter was attentive and the atmosphere was hospitable. I travel the east coast for my job and this is the first time I've written a review on any restaurant. I will not likely come back to this part of the state and am sad to not be able to enjoy this restaurant on a more frequent basis. Sat and waited for about ten minutes for a waiter/waitress to come take our drink order. After having three DIFFERENT servers walk past us and take all the newly seated patrons drink orders, we decided enough was enough. We left and I returned the menus. Needless to say, nobody batted an eye that we returned the menus and walked out the door so that must happen a lot. Moved here 3 years ago, from NY. Thrilled to find this gem. Wife and I have visited several times for some great sandwiches, authentic German fare and music. Service always very good, place very clean. I'm giving it 4, but it would have been easily 5 if not for the following disappointment. Arrived last Saturday, ordered my usual starter (potato pancakes w/house made applesauce and sour cream). These things are flipping delicious. Scratch that, were delicious. Now, I've had enough of these things to know if something has changed and sure nuff, they changed the recipe. They changed from using shredded potatoes to using mashed potatoes and when I asked why, they claimed "nothing has changed". Come on folks, I'm no Gordon Ramsey but you changed it so own up! Still a great place to eat, just annoyed they didn't tell me when I asked. I don't fault them for changing up the menu. Just be straight up with your customers. Will we be back ? Went in response to TV ad which talked about "NY style Deli Sandwiches". Got a Pastrami, Swiss and Russian on rye. The Pastrami was AWFUL...dry, off tasting, appeared to be almost chopped rather than sliced, if there was 3 oz of meat, I would be surprised. This is not NY style...neither the Pastrami nor sandwich. Fried Pickles were just OK...small portion, heavily battered. Someone there needs to actually GO to NYC to see what "New York Style" actually is....because this is not it! read more

I've only been here once and that's enough for me. My wings were ridiculously dry. I ordered them "hot" and they weren't hot at all. In fact, they were too sweet. The French onion soup had a robust meaty flavor that I really liked. Skimpy on the cheese, but at least the soup itself was tasty. The service was fine, although my mom ordered a Manhattan and the bartender completely left out the vermouth, which is kinda necessary in a cocktail with only three ingredients. I've now taken to calling this drink the "Olde New York Style Manhattan," which might sound tempting but in fact is quite disgusting. After sending it back, our waitress apologized and said that the bartender admitted to not knowing how to make the drink. So maybe stick with beer here. read more

If your a Deli, learn to make a proper Reuben. Anytime a Reuben has a higher bread to meat ratio, the restaurant deserves a 1 star. What's particularly funny is that their TV ad shows a Reuben that is nothing like what they serve. read more

My husband and I went for lunch today about 20 minutes after our order was taken I saw our waitress serve an order that looked like ours to another table then awhile later I saw her again with that order going back into the kitchen area. Two minutes later the same waitress came to our table with our order....I asked her if she had taken our order to other patrons and she said "yes it happened it was a mistake but we replaced the buns on the sandwich" My husband and I both said that wasn't okay and we wanted new food not the food that was given to the other patrons. The waitress said she agreed and wouldn't want that either her manager had told her to do it but she would inform him that we wanted new plates made. When she left the table I told my husband that I didn't feel comfortable eating food there if they were okay just replacing buns as a policy so we stopped the waitress and informed her to just give us our bill for our beverages. The waitress returned to our table with our bill and the Manager who admitted that yes they did just change buns on the hamburger and served the same plates of food to us. When I said it was disgusting he said yes it was. The waitress then offered to pay for our bill but the manager said no he would take care of the $2.50. Bad management experience but good food and good service from Melissa. Somehow reservations got mixed up. My daughter organized a family dinner after her wonderful graduation experience at PSU. The rezzie was for 430 (restaurant says 4). We were there at 430, had a great meal and experience with Melissa until management approached us at 550 saying "who made this reservation. This table was set up for a group at 6. So I don't want to rush you but we need the table at 6. So we are asking you to be finished by then. ". Meanwhile...we were not finished...close but still eating. And so shocked at how they handled this. At some point the female manager told us we had the reservation wrong (which we don't think we did) and that the table was needed. We were kind of shocked bc we had planned on staying to see the Kentucky derby and now we're being rushed out the door. So bizarre!! My mother (graduate's gma) then approached the management (Brandon and the female that previously approached us) saying we were planning on staying until the derby was over. Well...that started a huge amount of drama! Crazy! Now Brandon is involved and accusing grandma of being confrontational ...what a mess! Anyway...by 620 we were finished and on our way to the bar in the restaurant to watch the derby. Had they not even said anything...the next party would have had max 20 min wait for us to leave. WITHOUT all the drama and bad reviews etc. i did speak to Brandon expressing my frustration with the entire matter. He was a bit argumentative but in the end settled with an apology.
