I've been here several times but typically forget about it since it's tucked away in an out-of-town strip mall. Plenty of parking due to its location. The interior is large and spacious. It has a fun bar atmoshpere if you're going to watch sports or grabbing a few after work. I've always enjoyed the food here but I tend to gravitate towards their german menu. I'm not positive but I've heard they were the previous owners of the legendary "Schnitzel's tavern" in Bellefonte (which burnt to the ground with the Bush house)? Their menu has a variety of items with sandwiches, entrees, etc. but the german section is truly delicious. My favorite, pictured, is the badischer schnitzel. My wife tried the "broadway" sandwich. It's a great stop if you're looking to try something different. You can sometimes avoid the crowds of town, during busy weekends by venturing here. read more

Olde New York has great seating and a nice vibe to it. The service is nice and timely. A few of us went to lunch there and it was pretty good. I personally had the fish and chips that I enjoyed enough. The tilapia they used was good however, it was a tad too crispy (whether too thin of cut or fried a smidge too long). The fries weren't hot by the time I got them. I must include coffee cake dessert (shown) was very good! My friend said his little Italy (sausage) lacked a little flavor. My other friend did highly enjoy his burger. Overall, I'd come back because they have a variety of options and pricing isn't too bad. read more

Well it's come to my attention that they got a new kitchen manager. This idiot needs fired. He single handily ruined this place. We came for the boneless wings only to find out he didn't like them so he decided to change them to fried breaded balls. The sauce even changed to something chunky. On to the dinner Fries were mushy sandwich was half the size it should have been. This was always a good go to. Not sure we'll be coming back. read more

This place is amazing! I would rate it 6 stars if i could! The bar is huge and very well decorated, it honestly reminded me of a classic old school bar similar to the ones I've frequented in manhattan. They also have a large restaurant area separate from the bar area which is extremely family friendly. The food was also outstanding. We needed a place for lunch in State College where parking was not an issue. It was a pretty low bar. Olde New York passed the test. I didn't realize that the menu was severely German or I would have found another restaurant. However, things turned out better than I expected. There were non-German options, like the fish tacos I chose. My mate's Ruben was also pretty good. The service was good and prices reasonable. The dining room was severely worn from years of happy hour beer drinking by the college crowd. I'd do it again. read more

My wife and I were looking for something to eat locally. I got on Yelp and looked for different restaurants in the area and stumbled upon this place. If you're in the mood for some great German food, fresh home cooking and a great atmosphere then I highly recommend trying this place. Everything had soo much flavor. The ONLY bad thing is that I couldn't eat anymore lol. We got the pierogies with butter and onion for an appetizer. I got the weisswurst and finished it off with a peanut butter pie. The decor is nice, kind of an attempt at a throwback bar/bistro would find in the city. Our server was also attentive and quite apologetic about our meal. Not his fault, he wasn't in the kitchen. The German veal schnitzel entree felt like it was nuked, but still had oodles of fryer oil in the breading as if it went into oil not yet up to temperature. We went after a PSU basketball game and it was so easy to get there from the BJC. The interior was spacious and clean and on a cold day, their menu offerings were just perfect. We had some warm drinks and all ordered some German food. It was all so spot on, our entire party of 5 loved it all and the service was so great. Tried it base on hotel recommendation...The food is great with even better service. The staff is courteous and friendly and the prices are very reasonable. They have very good daily lunch specials (around $10) and a very good selection of adult beverages. The brats, burgers and sandwiches are all favorites. If you're visiting State College or Penn State and don't want to deal with the traffic and congestion of downtown, head up Rt. 26 to Olde New York (just minutes away) and you won't have to worry about parking or crowds. This time were dining light because we're heading to the Escape Room next door. I really enjoyed the Weisswurst dinner which was pretty close to authentic. The sausage itself was spot on. When dipping it in the mustard, it brought back some fond memories of Germany. It came with a side of potato pancakes and red cabbage, which where both slightly underwhelming. The pancakes was more like a 7-inch tater tots, but the spices were right. The cabbage was a bit, meh. Overall, this meal was strides beyond my last dinner at this restaurant. A very good place to go. We were fortunate that there was a table open in the bar area which is seat yourself. The wait for the dining room wasn't terrible but we didn't want to wait 30 minutes. I was a waiter for many years and it was expected you got to your table within 60 seconds to great your customer. Our server took about 5 minutes. Not the worst over waited. After he took our order drinks came out very quickly. I was impressed how fast the food came out considering how busy they were. The food was very good as well. Stopped here on our way through State College because I remembered eating there years ago when I was a PSU student. Not much has changed, but some may appreciate the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" type place. Sandwiches are pretty good (I got the Cuban). I always have to order extra condiments for sandwiches, but not the case today. They used the perfect amount of mustard and the pickles were good. The ham was ground up in with the pork roast which was decent--little dry. Could have used WAY more fries. As you see from the picture not many were given. Bartender was our waiter and he apparently couldn't hide just how much he didn't want to be at work that day. Granted, it was a Sunday, but remember it's your job. Not outwardly rude, but for example he couldn't be bothered to take his eyes off the TVs while taking our order. Overall good experience but there are WAY better places close by. Really good selection of German beers both in the restaurant and their bottle shop, and German food including house made wurst, Spätzle and red cabbage. Decided to come back and what a disappointment. Our waitress never checked. I've had my share of bier cheese and by far worst I've ever had. I got charged $2.50 for a side of cream cheese with a beer mix it was awful. I couldn't even eat it. If you order Bavarian Schnitzel with cheese spatzle, expect a soggy schnitzel with a slice of canned ham and velveeta like cheese slice drizzled with a tomato based barbecue sauce and regular spatzle with no hint of any sort of cheese, not even a speck of parm. I don't even want to tell you how much I ate at this place last night because it's appalling, but at least it gave me a good scope of the menu to report to you all. The food is pretty good although you know Herwig's is a bit better and perhaps more "authentic" when considering the fact that it's only 1 replica removed of its 'original' whereas Olde New York gives a whole new meaning to po-mo kitsch (I mean we're talking a replica of a bellefonte joint replicating early 20th century german-NYC immigrant influence replicating Germany...). This kind of explains why you have weiner schnitzel, wurst, nachos and suzy wong eggrolls on the same menu. On the appetizer list I recommend the Sausage Sampler (with the in-house Brat being the obvious winner); the potato pancakes were OK if deep-fried mashed potatoes are something that interests you. I DO NOT recommend the Curry Wurst which is a sliced wurst covered in ketchup with a side of fries sprinkled with curry powder. This is much different than the promised "sweet-spicy curry sauce" and I was not fooled. I mean ketchup on sausage? Really? I'm all mustard. You can't really go wrong with the entrees; we split the Badischer Schnitzel which is pounded, breaded & fried veal cutlet with a mushroom-sour cream sauce that isn't as heavy as it sounds. The best part was actually the thick egg noodles underneath which tasted homemade although they probably were not. Garlic-balsamic dressing for my side salad had little flavor but lots of oil! The Reisling I ordered had no body and tasted a bit like feet. They also didn't have any of the beers listed on the actual menu, which we found kind of irritating after also learning they didn't have the soft pretzels (which, by the way, taste like fried pretzel donuts and are amazing.) Most of what they had in terms of beer you can find at places as generic as Chili's with the exception of Spatan and an Oktoberfest or two. Our server ruled and put up kindly with my 20 minutes worth of indecision. She had brains and although busy didn't run around like a deer in headlights (not that I don't understand that feeling, though). Generally, my favorite part of this place is the painting above the "fireplace" of the bears & bulls goring each other in front of the NY Stock Exchange. There's certainly no better way to pull gristle out of my Weiss Wurst while staring at a headless cow that had just been mutilated by a black bear. But all this being said, I still really enjoy this place if only because I"m obsessed with sausage. However -- and while I know this is like comparing latkas with french fries - I have to say that it's not nearly as good or home-grown as the locally-raised pork made at both Elk Creek Cafe & Herwigs, I'm sorry to say. read more

Olde New York is the reincarnation of Bellefonte's late Schnitzel's Tavern. Like any reincarnation, a lot has changed; instead of a focus on German cooking, the focus is on the melting pot of New York and therefore a wide variety of Americanized ethnic cuisine, tilting towards European but not solely so. I'll get this out of the way now: It's not Schnitzel's, and if you're hoping for the wide array of German dishes they had you won't find them here. Olde New York's menu is actually focused on sandwiches and burgers, giving this place a bar and grill feel. They do have entree plates as well, which are correspondingly more expensive; as I generally do not eat sandwiches out, those are what I have had. They still make in-house sausages, except now kielbasa, French garlic sausage, and Italian sausage join the bratwurst. Their in-house sausages are made with a coarse grind of meat -- not good or bad, a fact that just is. Their sausage and cheese plate is tasty but filling. They have a variety of appetizers for American and other tastes. Their food is workable for the price, and their bar has a reasonably decent selection of beer, biased towards the German side of things. It's hard to complain about anyplace with Spaten Optimator on tap! The one place where I've had minor issues has been the service. I find I've emptied my water glass and waitstaff are nowhere in sight. Also, twice now appetizers have disappeared from my order. They weren't on the bill, but all the same ... where'd they go? Overall? Not a bad place to go. Not one of my personal favorites -- but not bad, either. If you're looking for a sit-down restaurant at that end of town and don't want chain food, it's a good option. Vegetarian Note: There are a few items to choose from, but I would not describe Olde New York as directly welcoming of vegetarians from the menu. I'm not certain they have anything vegan. read more

This is an okay place to go, though reportedly the beer (of which I didn't have any) is a lot better here than the food - which leaves things to be desired. We went twice - once for the regular menu, and once to check out the special Oktoberfest menu. The cuisine is supposedly German-ish, though honestly with more emphasis on the -ish than I'd like. As an actual German, I of course did not expect to step back over the Atlantic for an evening, but there's some very basic problems that I wouldn't really want to see even on this side of the pond. I had the sausage sampler starter, which comes with a Bratwurst and a Weisswurst - and there we run into a bit of an issue. You see, Weisswurst is something VERY specific, and even with lenience on the side of the ingredients (though why you couldn't make a veal sausage in the US doesn't really track either) there just is one thing above all else that Weisswurst is: poached, and NOT GRILLED. If there was ever any one characteristic to distinguish this sausage from the myriad of its German kin, it would be that. To grill a Weisswurst makes it, well, kind of not a Weisswurst. It's like ordering a steak and getting it boiled - even if it's the same cut, it just isn't a steak. Alright, sin committed, now let's see what they can salvage. Answer: not much. Aside from the horrifically wrong preparation, the flavor is also not very good. They apparently read up on the dish and noted it's made with lemon, but having (quite evidently) never had the real thing they just got the spices all wrong. It's far too citrusy, and tastes nothing like the original. Parsley (the other traditionally predominant ingredient) does seem to be there, as do some of the other aromatics, but it simply doesn't work. Add to that the horrible dryness imparted by the inappropriate grilling, and you got one tough SOB (S standing for sausage, naturally). The Bratwurst, however, fares much better. It's not too far off what I know from home, and though it's a little shorter and thicker than what I'm used to, it tastes passable. Grilling here is of course entirely the right thing to do, and they very clearly know how to grill it well. Thumbs up for this one, and my advice, quite honestly, would be to just switch this to a double Bratwurst and forget about the Weisswurst if you can't do it right. Main course was Schnitzel, another perennial German classic. Why they put cheese on it, though, I cannot say. It would have been a decent piece of meat without it, yet somehow they felt the need to melt a slab of American on an otherwise passable Schnitzel. I wouldn't exclude the chance that there's some place in Germany where they do that, but it's nowhere I've ever been. Very weird. Aside from the cheese, though, it was alright. Now for my biggest gripe, though. When we came back another night to try the Oktoberfest menu, we got the Butchers Plate, which not only sounded like the sausage sampler starter they have on the regular - but was nearly identical to it. The same two sausages, but stocked up with a modestly-sized piece of grilled pork. The sausages were as before, same complaints, same praises. The pork was unacceptably dry, and only being pressed for time stopped me from sending it back. Grilling an open cut of pork is tricky stuff, and they failed on all levels. It was like sandpaper, and though the flavor was alright it was ruined completely by the crumbly texture and complete lack of succulence. What's more, the "hot potato salad" (which apparently means "warm potato salad", not spicy) was an absolute disaster. I love seeing southern-German-style potato salad in the US, i.e. not made with mayonnaise - but what they apparently didn't read in the recipe was that it's made with VINEGAR. This one was not. As a result, it tasted flat, soapy, and absolutely disgusting. It's hard to screw up a dish as simple as potato salad, but they did it. THE worst potato salad I have ever eaten in the US, and believe you me, I've had some very dire stuff. The second side was sauerkraut, and - fair's fair - that was absolutely perfect. These people clearly know how to cook in terms of technical skill, they simply need some SERIOUS advice with recipes. However, the real punchline came with the price. The sausage sampler is $12, for two sausages and some pretzel bites. These same, identical sausages, plus a small piece of pork, and with potato salad and sauerkraut (not exactly luxury items) instead of pretzel suddenly shoot up to $21. That's nearly DOUBLE the price! I rarely feel ripped off with the generous US portion sizes, but this made me have flashbacks to pizza at the Piazza del Campo. Luckily this dish is only available one week out of the year. If you are gripped by sausage fancy, get the sampler starter, and avoid this trap. As for the rest... The people are fantastic, they're attentive, courteous, and always in high spirits. The venue is great. Straight A for all that. C- for the grub, F for the potato salad. read more
